Hey there. I'm new to these forums. This is the reason why I actually made this account hahah
Basically. I've just brought a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505, really nice phone, loving it.The phone is on the Telecom NZ (XT) network and currently runs Android 4.2.2. What I want to do is load up the latest version of the Cyanogenmod that is most stable for both my cellular carrier and my phone. I'm quite new to playing around with the software on Android devices. But I do find it very interesting. So be generous with me hahah I pretty much want a ROM that will still be able to run all of the cool features that the S4 offers but without the stupid bloatware. I'm sussed when it comes to rooting, that's easily enough done. But when it comes to finding a ROM that won't brick my device or recieve service, and in general loading the ROM onto my phone, I'm a bit lost. If any of you could help that would be amazing.
My phone info:
Model Number: GT-I9505

Welcome to XDA
Firstly before flashing any ROM backup your EFS and keep it safe, it might get you out of trouble if things go wrong
To back up EFS open a terminal emulator (can download from play store) on device and type the following:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p10 of=/mnt/sdcard/efs.img.ext4
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13 of=/mnt/sdcard/m9kefs1.bin
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14 of=/mnt/sdcard/m9kefs2.bin
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/m9kefs3.bin
If you want the stock S4 features but no bloat then try one of the many light ROMs available for the i9505 from the 'i9505 Android development section'.
If you want a pure AOSP style ROM then look in the ' i9505 Original Android development' section.
I'm personally running the CM10.2 nightlies and they are awesome!
Have fun, happy flashing!
Remember dont update firmware MH8 if you dont want upgrade new bootloader.
Until now cant downgrade bootloader.
The problem I have is finding a rom that will work with my phone. If you guys could provide me with links that would be amazing. Does Cyanogenmod use the features the S4 offers such as the continuous keyboard, the LED, the hover capabilities etc?
On a side note. When I go to update the phone through the phone settings or comes up with a message saying I can't update because I have modified the phone. The only thing I have done is root it. But I have since unrooted it and reset the phone. So I don't know what the problem is. Thanks for being so understanding and helping me out

ANY ROM on the i9505 forum will work with your phone mate.
When you rooted your phone the binary counter was increased, to go back to a fully stock state to receive OTA updates you need to use Triangle Away app.
CyanogenMod uses LED but the hover gesture is Samsung proprietary so that's not included.
I think there's apps though that use the hover sensor.
The search button here on XDA is your friend mate. The answer to every question you've asked is on this site.

I must be terribly impatient or not understanding what I'm doing, probably both actually but I cannot for the life of me find a working method for loading a custom rom on my phone. Could someone PLEASE point me to a resource that will work for my phone? Info provided below:

I have supersu as well. Every guide I've found for different rooms has been busy. I've only tried safestrap methods because I know I can switch back to the stock rom slot and have a working phone again. Im weary of methods that wipe out the stock rom as I really don't want to end up with an unbootable brick.
Ive tried cyanogenmod, and a TouchWiz room who name I can't think of at them moment. Both roms simply booted to a black/blank screen.
I really like the simplicity of cyanogenmod and it is my preference but I'm open to others. Can anyone please advise me on my options please, I've about reached my words end here. Why must these companies make it so hard to make the devices we pay hundreds of dollars look/act/be the way WE want them to be as the now owning consumer?!?
Thank you for your time, help, and guidance, I have nothing but respect for all the developers in this community, wish I understood the system better so I could be of more help as well.

Do we need NC 2 and how would we install it?

I'm in a similar sitch. I have rooted my phone after the NC4 assault using towelroot. Note to those who plan to use it: there are some hijacks out there. Don't go to towelroot.net for example. I have downloaded a couple of safestrap apk files and have been reading up on how to install safestrap. Once installed, then what? I think I need to install the NC 2 kernel but how? What's a kernel anyway? How is flashing a kernel different from flashing a rom? How is an android kernel different from a linux kernel? I can't see a way to run linux commands anyway...
Hi guys! There's a ton of guides on the forums that answer your questions. If you need help you are best of posting the exact steps you took up to that point and at what point you are stuck. Wikipedia also has a ton of information on the basic computer science stuff (what's a kernel? etc...)
Good luck

The root methods you have listed are intended for older versions. The only functioning NC1 root method is towelroot. Please check the all things NC1 thread prior to posting. All info can be found there. The person above has given the link to towelroot. If you go to the galaxy s5 forums, you can get a tutorial on it, but it's pretty straightforward. Enjoy your rooted device.
Remember that the phone has a locked boot loader. So, the stock kernel and recovery cannot be replaced. The only working recovery is safestrap. There is also restrictions on the Roms that can be flashed.

My phone likes to reboot when ever the hell it feels like it and it drives me crazy!!! I would like to know what the best ROM is for this phone. I had my phone rooted and then it was having problems so i factory reset it and flashed the factory Package (I got off the Samsung file site listed on this forum). Then after that my phone did a OTA update to 4.4.4 and it has been crappy ever since. So if anyone could please point me in the direction of a really good ROM and directions on how to install it on this phone i would greatly appricate it. I see a lot of people talking about bootloader locked and TWPL something like that and I have no idea what that is so this is why I ask for directions I have rooted multiple phones and tablets and have used ODIN a few times so I can follow directions just can't figure it out on my own.
Thanks
I am running the google play edition. Since the boot loader is locked on at&t i337, the only recovery you can use is safestrap. There is a thread showing you how to root and flash all Roms compatible with safestrap. Until the boot loader is unlocked, the only Roms available are touch wiz based Roms and the one that I am running, which is linked below.

Yeah, I second this. I've been running the GPE rom for a few weeks now and it's not bad. Although there a a few hiccups, overall it's a daily driver. Plus, I cant stand TW anymore.

TouchWiz is horrendous. No other way to describe it. I have found that with installing Nova Launcher Prime on my S4 that I can tolerate it. That being said, I've been running GPE 4.4.4 for some time now, and while there are a few hiccups (random vibrations for no apparent reason being the most annoying), it is definitely a VERY well polished ROM. I am currently downloading a couple of the de-bloated stock images, just to give them a run.
If you're looking for a good, solid daily driver however, you can't go wrong with the GPE ROMs

Best of lists are frowned on here as it is rather offensive to the many different developers here at XDA. The moderator will likely delete this thread. I hope he does. "Best of" is a matter of personal preference. Some like a custom rom, some want a de-bloated stock rom. Here is a great guide with all the roms that have been tested and confirmed to work on our device. You can't go wrong with any one of them , I should Know I've flashed them But try them yourself & see which fits your needs and preferences best. Good luck.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
There is no BEST ROM...all ROMs are the best for those people using them because that is what works for their phone, their usage, their setup, their location, their preference. You really need to read through the development threads and try some things to find what is BEST for you.
Thanks
Thank you all I am going to try the GPE ROM and tesat drive it for awhile...... I was having a problem with connecting my phone to my computer and found i had to dial *#0808# and change the setting to MTP two days trying to install drivers and trying to install and connect through kies it was hell wish i would of knew this sooner.:cyclops:
Found the right thread to ask the question about safestrap so i deleted my question here and you can delete this post please.
Hi, I recently bought a second-hand Samsung Galaxy S4 (Screen is cracked the bottom + back camera also cracked.. it was only $10).
I want know what the best way to root this phone is. The most common tutorials I have seen are for GT-I9505 but the one I have is GT-I9506, not sure if it makes a massive difference but better safe than sorry. I am looking to root this phone and flash stock android on it, then get Xposed Framework. I'd appreciate any suggestions! Really dislike TouchWiz.

You could try this.
But you don't actually have to root it. You can flash a custom recovery and then flash a custom rom which is already rooted.
You only have to root it if you have to backup apps.
I've been doing a lot of research on installing a custom recovery on my S5 and then a custom ROM. So far every guide I've read said that since AT&T has a locked/encrypted boot loader and that installing a custom recovery should be impossible; however, I seem to have an unlocked phone (unlocked padlock on boot screen). I'm guessing this phones a unicorn, but don't want to brick it by accident either. Is there a way I could check if this is possible without risking bricking the device? I'm sorry if this question is dumb. I've owned 4 HTC phones in the past and as you all know HTC makes installing custom software incredibly easy. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!
Also I'm a new user so I can't attach images. Here are the URLs though. Sorry for breaking the rules, but it's not spam. I just need some advice

Thanks Rakuu. So what exactly does the padlock mean? I have Lollipop and it's rooted. Coming from HTC phones, I thought it meant I could go ahead and flash something custom.
If you're using your phone as it came to you out of the box, it's not rooted and if it's running 5.0/5.1 lollipop, then, thanks to AT&T's encryption methods, rooting will be near on impossible.....

I'm running 5.0 and have root. I'm just trying to figure out if I can install a custom ROM, lets say Cyanogenmod. Everything I read says I can't, but apparently that's due to AT&T's locked boot loader and it appears mine is unlocked. I guess, I'm just trying to figure out what the hurdle is.

Its not unlocked, ignore the padlock its just cause you're rooted. You can only install touchwiz based roms, check the att s5 section, there's 3 or 4 different ones you can try.

Hi, let's see if you can respond from here, I could Flash an equal phone by following your guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/guide-merry-christmas-heres- t3516196
I already managed to be ROOT with SuperUser, the problem is that I now need Custom Recovery for this terminal, I do not know if the TWRP For S5 klte (Flash to Odin) or the Philz Touch 6.26.6 Klte fgor S5 SM-G900A. The issue is that your guide (in that thread) installs everything by FlashFire, as I do now to install in this new ROM (ROM Firmware SM-G900A_OF3_Stock_Rooted_By noship) the Custom Recovery? I think I need it to install the Patch to enable Tethering native WiFi on AT & T on Samsung Galaxy S5 T-Mobile.
This phone does not have WiFi enabled.
