Android 4.3 Bugs - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having problems with stock and unrooted rom.
1. Volume keys don't work at all and have to reboot to fix.
2. Nexus 4 would freeze and would have to reboot.
3. I don't know if its software or hardware, but nexus 4 would be unresponsive to turn screen back on and would have to hold the power button to reboot
Anybody with these issues?

Good morning, haven't used the phone. But hopefully it doesn't come to that. I used to be a crazy ROM flasher, and never got to enjoy the phone as it is. Its been months since I have flashed my phone lol I feel like I'm on rehab lol the reason why I don't want to factory reset or flash a ROM, it's because it takes about an 1 hr for me to set it up the way I like it lol thanks man! Hopefully they release a minor update to fix these bugs at least

I haven't faced any issues with the stock 4.3 even when i was not rooted(few days ago).Actually i find stock 4.3 better than 4.2.

I have face the symptom 3. Removed couple of newly installed files and no issues from last 14 hrs.

Now the reboots are getting worse; during a phone call it rebooted, screen off and doing nothing, and using chrome. I hate to do this but I'm going to factory reset. And by the way, what files did you delete?

Deleted word web & some regional specific app. Resetting phone should be fine without any issue.
I have formatted yesterday, its great no issues & battery life seems great.

I've experienced Symptom 3 a few times. Tried a few kernels and same result. So far I've stuck with Franco kernel and I overvolted by +25mV -- seems to have improved things a fair bit.
May end up doing a factory reset and re-loading the 4.3 image to see if that clears up any outstanding issues.

I think I've figured out the solution. Chrome Beta 30 is the one that is causing reboots stated in the link. I would get random reboots and would blame it on my power button. Happens for no apparent reason, during a phone call and while listening to music.

Hi all,
I bought my phone one week ago, and during this week it froze on me once on stock 4.3, not even rooted.
Over the weekend I flashed CM official nightly and I got a 10 second "freeze"... I waited it out without doing anything, after 10 seconds it "unfroze". Anyways, I've been reading that update 4.3 isn't all that great... I hope they're able to pinpoint what's causing these random freezes soon!

It looks Google isn't going to release android 4.3.1. Since rumors are stating that they are releasing Android 4.4 on October 14. Its only a rumor though. I wish they would fix this bug at least.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I'm getting the rocker volume issue and a couple of game won't play sound effects. Should of just left alone with 4.2.2
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I would get the same issue. I would be watching a YouTube video and the volume keys won't respond at all. I would have to reboot to get them working again.

Has anybody experienced this: Please insert storage on to the Nexus 4? When viewing the gallery. It won't let you view your pictures at all.

Seems like ur phone has multiple issues.
Just hard reset to get rid of these issues.

Can someone explain why this huge drop in the battery graph?
Last evening phone was charged to 100%, before sleeping phone was at 64%. But when i woke up phone was in deep deep sleep mode, couldn't unlock the phone. After long press of power button phone got restarted & battery level was at 14%.
I am using stock rom 4.3 & not rooted.

Thats a deadlock, it's a known problem with 4.3 JSS roms like CM 10.2. If you flash a JWR based rom it doesn't have these issues, or a hybrid JWR/JSS rom like PA.

I keep getting these annoying errors, both on camera and on media folder.

Random Reboot in 2.3.3, not in a call.

I have a non-rooted stock NS on 2.3.3 and the phone was just sitting on my desk doing nothing when I felt it vibrate. I picked it up to check for a text or email, but the phone was instead rebooting.
Has this happened to anyone else on this build? I have had the phone reboot while in call before, but never just sitting there in standby.
This happens to me in 2.3.2. I will have the phone just sitting there and it will randomly just be rebooting. Its not frequently enough to bother me yet but it happens on and off.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
same here on 2.3.2.... thats why I wanted 2.3.3. Ill wait patiently for the nightlies to include it.
happened to me many many times on 2.3.2, but not 2.3.3. knock on wood
Happened to me...2 times already...never on 2.3.2...im rooted though

This happened to me like 2x a day with 2.3.2.
Hasnt happened once yet with 2.3.3.
I never got reboots in-call, though I did get them a couple times when I overloaded the phone's RAM.
Mine just rebooted in 2.3.3. I'm also getting "Can't connect to camera" anytime I use the Amazon barcode app which worked perfectly in 2.3.2.
Haven't tried the new update yet

I never had the in call rebooting, just overloading reboots on my nexus s. I have yet to have one since the update, but it has only been a little over 24 hours. Then again this has been happening to me since updating my nexus one be it stock, rooted, or CM6 FRF91 and FRG83D or any form of gingerbread I've used on it. The only thing I can say it it started in froyo for me.

on the new update havent had any issues.
I had the random reboot in 2.3. 2 and thought the update had fixed it.
Unfortunately it did not - i noticed the phone rebooting yesterday.
The camera has crashed twice so far, requiring a battery pull.
I am stock, non-rooted.
I also get random failed downloads and failed market updates.
Starting to get frustrating.

With all the problems you stated, it is obvious that ur rom is corrupt. I suggest you to back up all your settings, wipe everything and then reinstall a rom .
He's not rooted dude. Btw I get a reboot on every call. On cm nightly, no matter what I try/flash

Nope.
It happens to 2 Nexus S, both stock, not even rooted. One barely has additional apps, too.
I think a lot of people don't notice the reboot, because it is silent, so if you are not looking at your phone exactly at the particular time it reboots, you wouldn't know it.
The inability to dial at times is much more annoying, IMO: you punch in a number, the phone tries to dial, then hangs up. At the same time, there are 3-4 signal bars. When it happens, it normally takes several tries to get it to work.
The crashing camera also doesn't happen every time, but it is definitely a new bug in 2.3.3.
Just had my first random reboot on 2.3.3 while phone was sat on my keyboard while at my PC.
Rooted detoxed Rom stock
My 2.3.3 phone went into the weird "Dim Screen Reboot Screen" reboot at some point during the night last night. I was late for work because the alarm clock didn't go off (I know, I know...don't depend on a cell phone alarm clock)
I'm about done with this phone. And Android. Anyone wanna buy my NS? Dead serious.

I am still hopeful, but I am losing some patience with Android.
The platform seems to be all about selling the newest hardware, but the user experience is definitely below that of the iPhone. I keep hoping that the next Android OS upgrade will close the gap, but....
The iPhone 5 will have 4" screen, with Apple's better screen aspect ratio. If it only did Flash....
Anyway, the Nexus S is really the best user experience Android has to offer, and it's overall fine. Except when it acts like WM6.

what kernel? And if you're going to ***** about problems with 2.3.3 you should run fully stock to make sure some customization is causing the issue.
Never once had a random reboot related to a call. Why do people tend to only pay attention to half of a bugfix and never specify whether their "problem" is related to it and then post it the completely wrong section about the problem without searching for the older threads relating to their issue?
I encountered this problem too, just 3 hours ago; the first after upgrading to 2.3.3 since Thursday.
Stock (but deodexed) 2.3.3, rooted, dalvik,cache-wiped.
EDIT: And oh, it's not a reboot bug -- it was a shutdown bug for me. Wasn't on a call, phone was just on stand by in my pocket, while my wife and I watched Voyage de la Vie. After the show, phone was dead, power button not working. I had to remove the batteries to jack it up again.
I guess I would be wiping my phone again, oh man that sucks.
But in the end, I still love my Nexus S.

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying the performance is worse than when I was on a 2.3.2 CM7 with the SAME PHONE. Not sure what comparing GPU's has to do with this.
Anyway, just had a reboot while trying to do the pattern unlock to wake my phone. It booted with a little "Safe Mode" thing at the bottom left, never seen that before. Then shortly after that it promptly rebooted itself again and it's back to normal CM7, but all my widgets mysteriously vanished from my home screen... great.

True, that was just my impression switching phones. I suppose it was a stability/compatability play as I hope they wouldn't unknowingly release a build with an unknown gross performance deficiency in the display driver.

My phone is doing the exact same thing.
On 2.3.2, CM7 nightly 2.3.3, and stock 2.3.3.
Wiped or not. Rooted or not. Same damn reboot/shutoff.
It just reboot/shutoff with screen off, and hangs dead there sometimes with LED lights on. Have to remove battery to boot. Sometimes takes a dozen time battery removal to get it pass bootloader.
I am fed up. Now I am using wiped non-root 2.3.3 with a broken CMR, and still reboots!
I am going to flash the stock Recovery back and lock the bootloader before sending back to Samsung for replacement.
But seriously, what would you recommend as my next phone. I am thinking about Tbolt or Atrix.

You do realize the "reboot" bug has nothing to do with just rebooting right? It has to do with rebooting while DURING a call. Also You're running CM7, so any random reboots is an issue with CM7 itself. It's still buggy as heck.
And ummm actually for me. Build 11/12 has been strong, not a single reboot. Used to have random soft-reboots, soft-reboot loops, and can't unwake the phone. All needing battery pulls. Haven't had a single random reboot with CM7 build 12.

Great its frozen

Running fine for a day, then suddenly when i looked at the screen it was at the "Asus" screen (with the logo and spinny thing below) - i touched the screen and it froze.
And now its frozen.
And I had just charged it...grrr - do i really have to wait 12 hours or however much it takes before the battery is depleted.
I wonder if there is a way to reset it.

Happened to several guys.
Did you try to press and hold power for ten or more seconds? It should power off and you should be able to power it on again.
this is happened to me 3 times so far.
Hold the power button to power off and reboot.
For mine after it boots it'll run ok for a minute or so, then run horribly slow until the launcher crashes. after the launcher starts back up it'd be ok.
Did you hard reset before the OTA? Where you stock, stock rooted, cwm flashed? Just trying to get more info.

We are having way too many threads for the same issue...
Mine still experiences the problem after a factory reset.
As everyone mentioned, holding down the power button fix it temporarily.
Someone else reported that you can avoid the random reboot problem by disabling deep sleep using no sleep widget, although it's a crude walkaround.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Just an idea but what if you use something like SetCPU and up the lower frequency. Had this issue on a kanged ICS rom for my phone. It wasn't the deep sleep that was the problem but the lowest frequency was too low to re-initialize the apps that were cached once you woke it up.
I did a full complete wipe and updated from .13 to ICS and am not going to jinx myself by saying what I am implying. If you know what I mean.
Interesting, and I do agree that there are too many threads, since I am trying to get some idea of how common this is. I think I was the original poster on this, but in any case in my particular situation I tried holding the power button down, resetting it through the reset hole, and holding the power button in while pressing the volume button down (this did give me the option of reformatting which I tried) but in every case it simply flashed the eedpad screen. The battery finally appears to have died and I'm trying to recharge it now, but so far it is now completely dead. All of this happened after it went into deep sleep. This tablet is 100% original, never been rooted or tampered with in any way so, unless this is a coincidence or a combo of ICS and one of the apps I have in it, I expect this to become a very common occurence. Anyway, I'll let it charge for a bit and see what happens. I already have an RMA (the service person didn't seem too surprised and didn't really try much trouble shooting - when I asked if he had heard of this before he kind of said I wasn't the first) so I'm sending it back to Asus on Monday so that when I get it back I can sell it, but I'm just wondering what percentage of people are having this problem. Heck, if it's even just 5% Asus is going to have a major expense on its hand.
I had the dreaded Asus logo freeze twice now, since the ics update. Both times when I wasn't using the tablet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Mine has frozen 2x already since the ics update. I performed a factory reset before and after the update.
Screen just goes black/blank and would have to hold the power button for 10secs.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Hey thanks, I thought I had pressed power down for long enough - but apparently not.
I was on normal HC and just accepted the update when it prompted me for it.
But if a lot of people are seeing this i guess Asus made a little blunder in this version.
I just came in after leaving my Transformer asleep for about three to four hours, and found the asus logo flashing on for a few seconds and then off, repeating over and over. Had to do a reset with power and vol down to get it to reboot. Seems OK for now except it really drained the battery.
I guess there will be a few ICS bugs to work out.

I thought it's the mic too... Does your voice record still work after you "reset" your TF?...
Edit: Saw the dreaded Asus loading screen again when I came back from dinner... 3rd time today... It's getting on my nerves a bit now. Such a pity that the TF is perfect besides this issue... I don't care if it reboots every hour or so, as long as it doesn't hang and depletes the battery.
Just to clarify, and so others don't break their microphone,THERE IS NO RESET HOLE! if your device is frozen, hold the power button to reset.
Are we certain its the deep sleep causing this?
Didn't happen to me this morning. I stopped using it around midnight and woke up fine the next day.

How do you it didn't happen? It doesn't get stuck at the ASUS logo for me, it simply reboots. Try leaving something open, like a browser window, turn off the screen and come back sometime later. If it's back to the homescreen and there are no recent apps, then it rebooted.
I don't know if it is the deep sleep that is causing it. All i know is that the bug is only triggered while sleeping. Every logcat i get stops at an AlarmManager event, before the reboot.

Touchscreen dead on wake, reboot fixes

Anyone got an issue where after some time (can be one week plus), you pick up your tab and the touchscreen is completely unresponsive on the lockscreen, can't even press powermenu? Reboot fixes. I had it on JSS1J and persists into JSS1Q. Hard to isolate as it may not happen for say a week of uptime, seems to be no pattern or consistent trigger
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I been getting the same thing. Charging over night the tablet wakes but touch is unresponsive. I'm on Clean rom and Elementalx kernel. Yesterday morning after 8 hours on battery and unused it woke and touch was fine. This morning after 6 hours on charger, over night, it woke and touch is fine. Need more testing.
Note: yesterday afternoon I update Elementalx kernal to 1.3
Yeah elemental or stock it happens

A week or more? I can't get my nexus 7 to last more than a few hours without rebooting itself.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I see this from time to time on mine. What sucks the most is when the damn alarm is going off and I can't do anything but hold the power down to reboot. Wife loves this "feature" in the early AM.
I have an unlocked bootloader but I'm running stock kernel (3.4.0-g6537a16) and stock JSS15Q. I do see random reboots as well, seems to be related to the screen going to sleep by itself but I can't reliably reproduce it.
Happens to me as well. Annoying.
I had this on stock locked so its nothing to do with bootloader or custom kernel/ROM.
Curious if a CM based ROM will affect this i.e. not stock JSS1Q based.
Is everybody facing this touchscreen issue? I am planning to get the new nexus 7 2nd Gen from canada. Is it something you can discover in the first week itself because the person who is bringing it will get the tab a week before her return.
If you're lucky it'll show up in that time period.
Others have gone 10 days.
Have them put off buying until the last second....
Same thing happening to me. The screen becomes unresponsive. Happens in the morning when the alarm is going off and have to reboot. I just updated to ElementalX 1.4 and hoping it'll fix it. I'm hoping Google comes out with an update soon because my screen sensitivity sucks sometimes. It's not registering my taps.
It doesn't lol it's either hardware or something in 4.3base

My one, after 10 days, dead, the touch screen has no response at all
sent back to repair for over 1 week, still no news on when can return..
really bad feeling with this Nexus 7 (2013),
only Nexus 4/7/10 has no problem and still working well till now.
I faced this as well. But it solves itself.

I experienced the same issue here. However, I am not able to reboot as I am still running on stock and don't have the debug option enabled. Pushing the power bottun for some time only brings up a menu where i may chosse to shut down. As the touchscreen is not working, I cannot do anything. Unfortunately, my battery is almost completely charged. Any ideas how to reboot?
Coincidence: The touchscren went unresponsive after the alarm clock went off. Maybe there is a connection?
Here's hoping JSS15R fixes this (fat chance hah)

Hold down the power button until it reboots.
I had this issue exactly once since I got mine, and it's been fine since. I suspect it's a hardware or driver issue.

Is everybody facing this touchscreen issue? I am planning to get the new nexus 7 2nd Gen from canada. Is it something you can discover in the first week itself because the person who is bringing it will get the tab a week before her return.

I was looking to upgrade my OG N7 tablet to the current, but it sounds like the 2013 version has some frustrating bugs huh?...

Using stock rooted and never had these issues.
Do you guys think there may be an app causing this?

Random Reboots anyone?

Twice during navigation on 2 different days. Once inside my pocket. Once playing music.

Are you running stock software? Do you have the Amazon app installed?

100% stock. Bootloader never unlocked. No Amazon app. Not even using screen protector or a case.

In the past 2 days I have had 3 random reboots all by itself. I just hope this doesn't happen when I'm asleep because the alarm clock would not go off due to needed pattern password to fully reboot. My 6P is all stock with bootloader unlocked and not rooted yet and yes I have the Yahoo mail app installed, is this the reason for the reboots?
edit: I'm on M6.0 MDB08K
Are running the latest version of Android? Which build are you on? Amazon app was causing random reboots and shut downs on my Nexus 6, that is why I asked.

I have the same issue. Random reboots mostly whilst using Firefox, sometimes when FF is in the background.

My 6P is on M6.0 MDB08K. I was thinking of updating this weekend straight to MDB08M or do I need to update to MDB08L first?
You should be able to upgrade to M just fine...try that and see if that gets rid of the issues...I hope it does

My friend is having the same problem while using Bluetooth playing music in his car.
I get a reboot when using Firefox.
If you are on the latest update and still getting random boots it won't stop... I've had 4 6ps and one of them continued to random reboot 100% stock phone
Mine is getting worse 3 times already today when using Firefox. It happened a few times last week but I can't remember what app I was in now. I'm going to delete Firefox now and see if it replicates in Chrome. This is getting real annoying as my nexus 5 did this towards the end all the time. Power button failed
Since I've had my N6P its randomly reboot 3-4 times. Fully stock and its usually when I'm on Chrome or not doing anything still on MDA89D there isn't an update available yet.
Update
After I posted earlier today my phone locked up and rebooted.... Why is this happening.
I've had it reboot twice in 3 days. It happens randomly, once while browsing Chrome and the second while on Relay for Reddit.
I sold my Nexus 6 for this problem and now I'd like to buy a 6p but now I don't know if It's still a good idea

Send RMA
I emailed Huawei about the random reboots, I got fed up today and I did a factory reset. And guess what.... When my aps were installing again, it freaking froze and rebooted again....
I noticed the same issue in the past two days. One was during streaming music in the car, the phone suddenly went into indefinite rebooting mode, would reboot into system no problem and soon reboot again.
Second was two hours ago, didn't notice until after the reboot, all the notification were gone, had to check the uptime to determine it just rebooted.
