okay after doing some hard thinking about my next upgrade and realizing i don't have a ton of money to spend on a real hero phone right now. id love to see one of the devs on here create the first fully functional android rom for our touch vogues. i know i seem to be the one on here who has no luck with most of the builds so far but something keeps bringing me back to android.
so heres the deal, i will offer $50 or more via paypal to the first dev who can make this happen. id like to see others join in and lets make this bounty worthwhile. it would be a ton cheaper for me to just buy another vogue even brand new rather than spend $300 on a hero or other android phone. i may even be willing to donate my old vogue for testing. im also hoping others may join in on this. i see some of the devs have stopped development or will by moving to real android phones. i think the vogue is a solid phone and a rom like this would really keep interest going and the community going strong. hell maybe even xda will give us our own dedicated android section for the vogue if we can do this. also since we have godzon who is very talented at skinning, maybe he can start creating themes we can use on the rom? just a thought but really the possibilities are endless IMO.
so my questions are:
who is up for the challenge?
can this be done legally without google getting upset?

can we root our phones after we create a rom so we can have full potential as a real android phone user?

well donut. tattoo still has trouble with force closes on start. some incompatibilities with our ril because of proprietary code. so donut would be a great option once audio gets fully functional. i'm not about to brick my only phone......

well whatever build you guys think would be best. i just thought this would be a great idea for us vogue users. why buy a android phone when we can have fully functional rom on our vogues? then we could work on rooting, themeing and all that good stuff.
what do you think zen, would you be interested in this? would you need a spare vogue to try this out on? i might be willing to donate mine or hopefully someone else will too. im sure i can pick up a spare vogue for cheap.
I like this idea espcially since us Sprint SERO guys don't have a viable Android option to use as of yet.
I'ld paypal $50 for a version that completely ditches WM off the phone and works well. It doesn't matter which version, once someone pioneers the trial others will follow.

Already said this in another thread, but I've got a spare Vogue (blacklisted ESN, I think) and, while I'd like to retain possession of it, I will blindly flash whatever a dev puts out for testing.

Before we go over to make a flashable rom we should look to get all hardware working for 100%. At the moment i think the risk to brick your phone is enormous. We should ask some of the spl people if they could help
I suppose it all depends, do you guys still want to have winmo? If not than it's not too terribly far away. Right now I can make my vogue start to boot the linux kernel, it totally wrecks the winmo everytime though. And there are some challenges to overcome..
Dual boot would be too cool, if ever possible....
were up to $470 right now to the first dev to make this possible.
and to mission....were talking about a fully flashable rom like winmo. i don't really see why this cannot be done with some hard work and teamwork. as i said my offer stands until i can get the hero which may be up to a month away yet.

not really what were talking about here man. right now technically that's what we already have. android/vogue is nothing more than a program, we want a fully working operating system that can be flashed like real android users can. once again i cannot see why we can't make this happen. ive seen a ton of talented devs on here. i wish i could do even half of what they accomplish.

If one was to flash completely to android would one be able to flash back to winmo later or would that option be wiped away with the pure android flash.
Also we need a bootloader like grub for our phones so that we could install multiple os's and choose which one too boot at startup, although that might be easier to do starting from an android phone.
i think that if you want dual boot and all that junk, stick with a computer.
i would like an flashable android ROM to get rid of winMo for good.
i would donate also if it gets done.

I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.

if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.

I wasn't planning on buying the HD2 soley in hopes of porting Android, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from folks that I'm not getting myself into a device that isn't worth the effort. I love modding my phones, but would rather not be stuck beating a dead horse in a few months. The feedback is greatly appreciated, and makes me feel much better about my decision.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.
Well, I have been an iphone user for the last few years and finally made the switch. I customize everything, so I'm use to using Cydia and Winterboard. I have no idea if there is anything comparable.
So, my question is... As a beginner on this platform, where do I even start looking besides here to find out what I can do with rooting my phone, creating themes, or custom apps and tweaks.
Like I said, I'm very new too this, and have no idea where to look. I've tried searching, but some of the terms i'm not familiar with yet. The nice thing that I can see right now, is the reason's I jailbroke my iphone, the S3 does already, or I have figured out an easy alternative.
Any help in the right direction would be great! So far, I'm really glad I got rid of the iphone

XDA is probably the best source, but there are certainly plenty of other xda-like sites out there. RootzWiki is probably the biggest, but it seems like a handful of new ones pop up every day.
On top of that, I'd say try the obvious... google it! If you google something like "what can i do with my rooted android phone" you'll find a lot of good suggestions (articles by tech sites, as well as forum threads from people who have asked the same questions as you). Keep in mind though, Android advances pretty fast, and all phones are a little different so not everything you find may be relevant anymore. Example: You may find something that says screenshots are a good reason to root... but that's a standard feature now in ICS, and Samsung phones could do it all along. So just keep that in mind... some things you may find may be out of date.
Hey welcome to android. I too made the switch over a year ago and that's when I became a member here. I spent the better part of that sifting through all this site has to offer. I started with the captivate when the rooms for it were at their prime and I have upgraded to the s3. I don't know all there is to know about this stuff but I have not wrecked my phones yet. So with all that said I would recommend getting yourself familiar by reading the stickies. They some very nice tutorials. Also if your not sure about something qna section is good. Once you get the hang of all this you will see exactly why android is true open source. Jailbreaking for me got boring but rooting and flashing roms is always interesting. This site also has very friendly developers that love doing this stuff so that's also a huge help. Last but not least don't be afraid to ask. It may mean the difference between an awesome phone and nice looking paper weight from Korea

The great thing about Android is because you can do anything on it right out of the box compared to you having to jailbreak an iphone. Id suggest just going through different apps and what not in the app store and see what catches your eye
Honestly, I would recommend that you spend some serious time getting to know android and understanding all of the capabilities of your phone before you even consider rooting it (not to mention flashing a new ROM.
I am a long time Android user that has rooted and flashed many ROM's over the years, but the S3 is so good out of the box (imho) that I personally have no need or desire to even root it at this point. That may change in the future, but that's where I stand right now.
I guess my advice would be ... don't be in a huge hurry to start making massive changes to the device until you understand what you have. No need to risk killing that shiny new toy (yet).

Welcome. I think maybe figure out what you'd like to do that you haven't figured out yet and search on xda or even Google. Its possible you may not need to root to achieve it. I root only to restore app plus its data from one android phone to the next. Without root it only restores app so for example with games it won't restore where I left of in the other device.

As the title suggests, I have just turned into an Andriod user...i.e.: this is my first ever andriod device. If it was not for Nexus 4's cutting-edge hardware+software combined with its PRICING (the major part), I wouldnt have bought an andriod phone.
Just want to know who else is on the same boat. There are a lot of questions running in my mind.. rooting.. kernel.. ROMs.. what not! May be by the passage of time I will learn all this and enjoy the journey of Andriod-world.

Tip is since you're new. Don't use the toolkit, spend the time and learn about it to manually unlock the bootloader if you decide on flashing anything (custom rom, kernel, root). It's very simple to do and will help you in the long run. Check the forum sticky threads and there are tutorials on how to approach this.

the previous one, galaxy nexus, was my first one. i couldn't see myself using gingerbread before, it was too ugly. when they got matias duarte and it started to look like something i made the jump and never looked back. i'd say use your nexus for a while. you can always root it easily, that wont be a problem, but why not enjoying stock android while its new and fresh for you. i mean, im all for rooting it but honestly, the time when a new android comes out and we don't have sources yet but we can't wait so we jump to I/O leaks or factory images, that is always the nicest.
although, yeah, i forgot about nex4's washed out colors........... maybe it makes sense to root it right away for that purpose since its gonna look ten times better when its calibrated.

As zephiK said, try doing it all manually. Don't just find the automation scripts and use them. I started with the HTC Dream/G1, haven't looked back since. I must say android has changed a lot since the early days, but one thing has stayed the same, the knowledge I gained from having to do it manually from the get go, can roughly be applied to any android device. It largely helps you gain a better understanding of how the device works and what methods can be used to manipulate the software to do what you need, and want.
Oh yeah! How could I forget. Unlock your bootloader manually DAY ONE, even if you don't decide to root.
Why? When you unlock your bootloader, it will wipe your phone's internals and data. So you might as well do it right away so if u do decide to tinker with your phone, you can always back up everything and make your transition very easy to do.

I too am a first time Android User and a proud owner of the Nexus 4.
It was quite a transition from Symbian to Android. Well, not really.
Now to figure out why I rooted my device last night.
My first android was the one and only T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream). Loved it to death. But I lost it while on trip to California in 2009. I was pissed about it for almost a year :crying:
Currently have the HTC Vision (G2). Wanting to get my hands on a N4 badly. I almost want to pull the trigger and buy an overpriced one on Amazon or eBay. I'm checking the Play Store everyday for it. Let's see if I can hold out.
BTW, just got a N7 yesterday. Rooted it the moment I got it.
Android can do so much even on stock devices... I'd suggest trying it all out for a month or so before flashing kernels, etc. Just because there is so much to customize and try (and break... a bit) even without rooting.
Well nexus4 is my first Android phone i bought myself, i have used before android. But owned only Nokia. After 2 weeks I am very happy and i think i won't regret chosing this over L920

Root Process
I am new to android and need to know the step by step process of root. Like unlocking boot loader is the first step, second step ?? and so on.. Please give the step by step flow from scratch.
Nexus 4 is also my first Android device, got it last 16th of December. The best Christmas gift I had for myself after awhile. Since then, I'm lovin it!

I think it's really worth looking at all the different Nexus 4 subforums and reading the main threads, pretty much everything is covered. And if you don't understand something, if you post in the correct thread people will help you out with what you need.
Nexus 4 is my first android, coming after 4+ years of iPhone. I am blown away so far! And this forum is an amazing resource too :good:

I do not plan to root the device as honestly I dont know the ABC of rooting ATM. So I will read read and read when i get time and if stuck somewhere, i will ask someone to help and then move on.

I think it's really worth looking at all the different Nexus 4 subforums and reading the main threads, pretty much everything is covered. And if you don't understand something, if you post in the correct thread people will help you out with what you need.
Nexus 4 is my first android, coming after 4+ years of iPhone. I am blown away so far! And this forum is an amazing resource too :good:

im also a little surprised about how many nexus 4 owners are new to android. i mean all of us android veterans know that its the best android phone right now, most people just coming in to android opt for easier to come by androids like the one x or the gs3, mainly because they dont know what to look for. for those just getting into android, you made the right choice!
my advice to you from hundreds of times flashing, wiping, restoring, and resetting my phones on various roms: go crazy now. try all of the different customizations, launchers, browsers, and all that. remember what you like and what seems to slow the phone down, drain the battery, or save battery and speed it up. once you have figured all this out, wipe it and start fresh, maybe try a custom rom and kernel if you want. put back the stuff you like. after you get bored, do it again! at this point, ive pretty much realized the best thing for me is to just keep my phone as vanilla as possible, no 3rd party launchers, keyboards, dialers, etc, but ive tried them all! its just easier to set up that way, and ends up with a fast and seamless experience. everybodies different though, and thats the wonder of android
hi i have seen this done quite a few times on xda i have been a member for along time now some times this works out great and its gives a bit of push to the development
its been quite quiet on the dev front for roms and kernels i know its only been a couple of weeks but the normal s6 seems to be on its way a lot more. i really wanted to get a custom kernel so i asked @mythos234 from simple kernel whos kernel i used on my note 4 to try make on for us for the edge link to the thread for the edge > http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/orig-development/tw-simplkernel-t3091094 and he has been doing an amazing job to implement some stuff in to the kernel i am not a dev but an android fan and i know there is only really so much you can do with out having the device in front of you as worrying that a wrong over clock or a wrong under vault could cause some one to loose the use of there phone so i am taking this on my own back to see if any one would be willing to pledge any thing to help get a handset and so we can get a great kernel for a great device for the dev this has nothing to do with @mythos234 its all down to me i am not asking for money now i am just asking if any one would be interested and if we hit the mark we need to get the device then i will start the ball rolling to sort a device out please no flaming its just an idea which i thought i would give it a go

First of all, huge thanks for launching this support campaign, really appreciate the support that you like my work :angel:
I know that the S6 Edge isn't a cheap device to begin with, so I probably should say something here first.. No matter the result, I will still keep supporting and developing for the phone. Having one to play with would ease the work a lot though, I'm not going to hide that. Currently everytime I add a little detail I need to contact my testers, wait until they have time and then either be happy and launch or try to solve problems which I can't properly see for myself. This isn't a huge problem with changes like performance boosts, but when coming to the serious stuff like Overclocking or Undervoltig, I just won't risk anyone elses phone for that, because a simple typo whith a voltage can burn your phone. I would be a fool if I started to promise to bring any of this to the S6 Edge, in software development you have to watch out when making promises, they tend to fire backwards But should I have an S6 or Edge, I would definately start working on those things, since bringing them from the Exy 5433 shouldn't be impossible at all. What else would change? For one, you'd get fixes and updates faster and more reliably. There are some things which I'm going to notice when I spend days scrutinizing stuff that no tester will find, simply because many issues are very subtle.
Probably my testers would be the happiest though, since I wouldn't annoy them all day with not working things
