microSD 32Gb class 6 and Galaxy S

I am thinking about purchasing a 32Gb microSD for use with my galaxy S.
My concern is that, is this too large? Are there any bad side effect like it being too slow to display picture/start up scann/run applications?

Which brand? That's probably more important for the speed than class (a class 2 Sandisk is often as fast or faster than a class 6 from a lesser brand).
The capacity of the card shouldn't affect the speed during most situations. However the phone does scan for media each time it is turned on or after disconnecting from USB connection (Kies or mass storage), the amount of time this takes depends on:
-the amount of media stored on the card and
-(probably) the read speed of the card.
Note that class rating is minimum write speed - so it's not a great indicator of real-life performance.
Also note that some too-cheap-to-be-true cards are actually smaller capacity cards that report larger capacities to fool the customer.
BTW where are you getting the card from (I want one as well ).

I am looking at Sandisk as well and most likely get it from their online store. I am trying to find more information whether it is worth the trouble.

I don't think Sandisk sell class 6 cards (yet). Buying from their online store's also more expensive than online retailers (I can get one in Australia for AUD155, which is ~USD137, cf their RRP of USD200).

the only LEGIT 32GB Sandisk available right now in the market is only Class 2
if you read anything else, it is FAKE, specially from eBay
wait until the other microSD manufactures start pushing out 32GB on class 4 or class 6 before buying.
i'm using 2x 16GB Class 6 until the 32GB class 6 becomes available.

I'm using Class 2 32GB card in mine, its fine.
Its slower when you're transferring to the card from your PC, but for most people thats only particularly problematic the first time (loading music collection), after that you'll not really notice a difference in the phone (the read speeds are basically the same, and the phone can neither read nor write to the card faster than a Class 2 card can cope with). You can see it in the benchmarks taken post-mimocans fix - Class 2 cards are no slower than any other Class within the phone.
Grab one now and be happy.

my local stores already carry the real Sandisk 32GB class 2
too slow for my taste, i like to run Apps from the SD card, also use it as a SWAP partidion to prevent the LAG problem people complains about, it's a very easy fix

it depends what you are trying to do
if it's just to listen to mp3, then Class 2 is fine
if you want to run games, software, watch movies, use it for SWAP drive to have no lag, then minimum a Class 6

Class ratings don't really seem to have too much of an effect on real world performance: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1468705. Just discount the last result from the SGS (it's most likely mistaken for the internal SD).

i rather trust my experience coming from PalmOS + WinMb where real life situations using a class 4 or slower cards, made a huge word of difference when launching applications from SD and watching movies from SD
funny enough the numbers reported on that topic shows SGS i9000 to have the fastest speed even using the same card that got lower speed on the other phones.
which seems to point out it's directly proportional to the CPU speed, and the multitasking software running in the back end.
however as you see on those test itself, there are speed differences between class 2, class 4 and class 6
the same class # can not be compared to another class # of a different size,
if you imagine a hard drive, the bigger the hard drive the more layers/disk area it has to read, the same is true even for static SD cards.
however as pointed on those test Transcend usually has the fastest SD cards in the market, that's why i always buy that brand for performance, using a 16GB Transcend myself, waiting for the 32 GB class 6+ to come out

if you want speed get the performance SD cards
Kingston and Sandisk are mostly standard speed, they don't release much performance level SD cards anymore, but they do have lots of those on USB sticks.

I tried my Brothers Sandisk Class 2 32GB and it worked perfectly.
Granted it's not as fast as my Sandisk Mobile Ultra Class 4 but that card flies anyway.
Certainly for recording your large movie files taken with the camera it's no different in speed than using the built in SDCard on the phone.

I have no problems watching 720P video on my phone. I have no problems launching applications either.

of course there is no problem, the issue here is getting the top performance, any SD card will work just fine.
it's just a matter of how fast/slow are you able to torelate

The only time you will notice any difference in speed is when transferring data to and from the card.
However, when you have double the space of other cards to consider speed should not be a deciding factor.
I'm already looking to get the Sandisk Class 2 32GB card. It will store all of my work files normally kept on my Laptop.
My Sandisk Class 4 Mobile Ultra 16GB will be my spare ~ should the larger card fail...

I have the 32GB sandisk card and works perfect. I have a 720p mkv file and my music on there. Playback was superb for the video with no noticeable lag. Mind you the card isn't anywhere near full yet. From my limited knowledge of sd cards, they put data on the fastest part first so the fuller it gets the slower the card is likely to get..
My plan is to put movies and songs on the 32GB file and reserve the internal 13GB for capturing video and taking pictures on the phone.

yes its plenty for this handset. many many many people already have theses cards in the droid and the evo and all have had much success with it.

I use a class 10, to reduce the current draw. If I were to run it a maximum speed it would be limited by the heat it would generate. So in affect it would be limited by the current it consumes. Not talking about leaks, but overall. Slower sd's are also limited the same way but consume their limit at slower speeds. Since the faster cards are limited (maxed) at higher speeds they consume less at slower speeds, because they are rated at uamps/read/write.

Engadget posted about a class 4 just the other day, due to my post count I can't link. But kingston does have one, even though it's much more expensive. If you're running out of room I would suggest only keeping vital media files with you, and using subsonic to stream anything else.

Got my 16gb on eBay for around 28! It is probably class 2 but I don't care lol

I bought one of THESE class 6, 16gb microSD cards, and it seems to be pretty good. No problems so far.

I'm using a class 2 to run apps off of and its plenty fast (also cause im to cheap to buy anything better lol)

tkirton recommends at least a class 4 for Dark Tremor. My G1 would crash on anything less than a class 6 when running apps2sd but that phone is a bit inferior to this one. Not sure if Google has a recommendation for Froyo a2sd.

I got kingston 32Gb micro sd card for less then 40 on ebay from us seller it is class 4. It reads at 9mbs and it write speed is at 4 mbs.

32GB MicroSD Wait!!!

I recently picked up a 32gig MSD for my Evo as I kept running out of room on the 16gig card. I went from a 16GB Class 6 to the latest Class1 or 2 that SanDisk has. My phone takes around 3 minutes to boot now at best. Looking at gallery or anything like that is SLOwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. If you are thinking about and have lots of pics/videos and use App2SD like I do, you will only be disappointed in the end results with the Sandisk card. Just sharing so others can save and wait for a real card.

Interesting...I have a 32gb sandisk class 2 card that is 3/4 full and I have very little if any delay...I only have 8.19gb space left.

I have 11 gigs left at current and the only change I did was this card and I can say that performance of the gallery and boot time has severly suffered from what my old card gave me.

the lower the class number on the card, the slower the transfer rate. So your 16gb class 6 may have less room, but its way faster than a 32gb class 2. Dont know if this helps or not.

+1. I switched from the Class 2 8GB card that came with it to a Class 10 16GB card and the differences are staggering. I never benchmarked my class 2, but I get around 17.8 Mbps read/write on this one. On my 8GB card it would take about nine minutes to transfer a movie from my phone, now it takes under a minute.

that isnt always true that cards are just slower. The class system is a min spec system meaning they have to atleast hit this to make it they can be well over it depending on the chip used

Most people benchmarking the San disk 32gb cards are finding them to perform closer to class 4 then the indicated class 2. Check out the thread in the accessory section. Perhapse your card is defective.

Sandisk. The Yugo/Walmart of the mem card world. None of the pro photographers that shoot digital that I've met will even touch them.

[Q] SD Card Class Question

Ok.... So I have a 32gb Class 4 SD Card. When I went from the stock 16 class 6 card I noticed a speed difference... And well.. It has finally got to me... I am looking at going class 10 but I am wondering if anyone has done an upgrade like this and has any input.
I understand the class number is directly related to the speed in mbps but I guess what I am really curious about is will the epic write/read the card at faster speeds (than 6 [which is stock]) reducing my lag spikes in applications, pictures (taking and viewing), and in gallery 3d(While creating thumbnails [I have noticed this has slowed down the MOST])
For anyone who is interested I am looking at getting this SD card (Please note that I have nothing to do with this seller on amazon and am purely asking for opinions)...

I don't know if our hardware will push the speeds of a class 10, that's not saying you cant use it, just saying you likely won't get those speeds out of it. Most of the time you can't get that much out of one even if the hardware will support it. I'd be willing to be 60% of cards out there are over classed or numbers are inflated from actual production chips.

"Stock card" was a Class 6? My launch day Epic came with a Class 2...

My 3 month old Epic also came with a Class 2. LOL - popping it out with the phone running caused my Phone to reboot (Bonsai).

Yes. Our hardware can. I have done tests transferring files from my computer to the USB card via my phone and it is extremely fast. Camra speed has also dramatically increased if you are taking HD photos. Camcorder speed also increased. But I was going from a stock class 2 16gb that came with the phone to a class 10... So coming from a Class 6, I dunno how much of an increase that would be.

SD Card benchmarks

Hi guys,
I'm curious about the speed of the bundled microSDHC card. I just benchmarked it with SD Tools and consistently get around 6-8MB/s writes and around 17MB/s reads, and the label says Class 2 so it's performing way faster than rated (more like a Class 6). I'm running jt's CM7 Alpha 3 if that makes any difference.
I'd appreciate it if people would post benchmarks of their bundled cards or any other SD cards that they've bought for comparison. Thanks!
Edit: 8MB/s writes also reported by Antutu System Benchmark, so it might not be a fluke. Also, when transferring files via USB I'm getting 7.5MB/s too. This is crazy! I'm actually looking at getting a cheap 32GB Class 4 card tomorrow but it seems like it'll probably be slower... Although class rating is just a minimum write speed, I doubt most cards have such fast write speeds, especially when they're marked Class 2.

Though I have a 32 class 4, the card that came with the phone consistently transferred just as fast, if not faster, than it. I was always impressed by it.

I too ended up buying my own class 4, but not because the SD card that came with the phone was slow, as you guys know, it is quite fast. My problem was I was burning through them. I burned through three in about three months and they got sick of giving me new ones...lol. Class 4 now for about 2 months, and not a problem, and honestly about the same speed, so it seems.
