How bad is LG about Android updates? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've never owned an LG Android phone, considering the G2. Wondering how bad they are about delayed Android updates?

They deliver updates like couple times a month for a current flagship. Then after a year or so they forget about it. Then move onto the next flagship.

Thanks! And I see that development is pretty active for the Sprint LG Optimus G, so that gives me hope there will be good community support through a 2-year ownership cycle.

Luckily your not going to be dealing with something like the g2x. That phone lost support from nvidia which made it impossible to upgrade the os. This snapdragon soc will get good support for 2 years at least

Hopefully CM will start making builds and LG's updates will be irrelevant.

The G2X is what has stopped me from going back to LG. Took one year to go from 2.2 to 2.3 and it was a ****ty update that made the phone worse. Worst part was out of the box the phone would reboot or crash for no reason so I desperately needed the update. That was years ago so maybe they learned but in general I don't trust LG with software at all. Real shame

Poor you own Old/2011 LG Phone
But now LG software is good, they learn from mistake
from ubergizmo
"The other thing that should not be underestimated is LG’s progress in software and product planning. 18 months ago, few people would have believed that LG would be where it is now. This has gone under the radar, but when I was in Korea, I found out that LG had invested enormously in software engineering since, and it shows: just like with the G Pro, the LG G2 user interface is nearly always fast and fluid. This is arguably the most important difference if you want to compare it with the Galaxy S4. "

I was burned by HTC with the Rezound, so that's why I'm skeptical about getting the HTC One over the G2.

Guess what G2X didnot recieve an update, but international O2X got 3 major updates.
1. Froyo
2. Gingerbread
3. Ice Cream Sandwich.
Though we run 4.3 on it very smoothly..

Funny thing was my LG G2X was one of my favorite phones.
It had a screen light bleed issue, I remember I had to do 3 exchanges to find one that had only a decent amount of screen bleed.
It was also my first phone to crack 5000+ in Quadrant once overclocked. I was in awe lol.
Never had any issues with the software..

My biggest concern so far with this phone is the fact that it is made by LG. I am currently using a G2x, which I've had for around a year and a half now. It has honestly been one of the worst Android phones that I've owned. I haven't been following dev support on other LG devices, so I'm curious if there will be a decent dev scene or not. From my understanding, the reason LG stopped updating the G2x was because Nvidia wouldn't provide the necessary support.
I'm debating if I should get the G2 or just go ahead and get the HTC One or the S4.

The g2x was my first Android and I loved it. To the average consumer it was fine, but the lack of support was discouraging. I bought the G2 because honestly I'm tired of flashing roms and if there is zero support I think I'll still love the phone. The ui is very customizable. I dig it. I'm debating on even rooting. This phone has totally impressed me.

I also love the LG os. it's 1000x better looking than touchwiz and performs better. If I could never get a custom Rom I would live. I only want a circle battery and removal of the att text in my status bar.

Learn from my mistakes....stick with Nexus phones!

Ok, so I bought a Nexus S around January of this year. Full price from Best Buy. Thought it was fantastic. It was my first "Nexus" phone. But a few months later, I got bored and heard about the Dual Core HTC Sensation. So I sold my Nexus S and bought the Sensation.
I loved this phone at first, but the novelty wore off. But the entire time I had it, the Nexus S was in the back of my mind. Sure the Sense 3.0 looks good, but for a dual core phone it didn't feel better. The Nexus S is faster. I know that Sense uses a lot of memory, and the Sensation was my first Sense phone, but it ruined Sense for me. I dislike Sense because of the Sensation and will probably never pick up another phone running Sense.
So, this weekend I sold the Sensation to a user on this site and bought another Nexus S. I feel that at this point, if it isn't a Nexus phone, then I don't want it. Dual core or not!
LOL thanks, i guess that summarizes what i've been hesitant about
I was also thinking about picking up the Sensation, or the G2x, but no matter how i looked at it, it didn't have as much development going on as the Nexus S
also the lack of SAMOLED is a big no no for me.
the only phone i've set my eyes on at the moment is the Samsung Hercules due out on the 09/26th
Yes, I missed the hell out of the Super AMOLED screen. It was one of those "don't know what you've got till its gone" type of things.
I would stay away from the Sensation and stay waaay the hell away from the G2X phones
The Super AMOLED spoiled me so I hope that Samsung gets the next Nexus phone too.

I think partly because it "just works".
The EVO boards everybody was trying to get AOSP/Cyanogenmod working and bugfree (bluetooth stack issues) and add Wimax support.
G2x also trying to get AOSP working, in a stable fashion. And they're trying to port the LG camera to AOSP. Also bluetooth issues there.
Here everything already just works.

This has been covered ad nauseum, but basically the other phone development forums are swamped with activity, most of which revolves around trying to get their phones to be like the Nexus is out of the box.
Maybe someone can start posting ROMs with features like "SENSE-less, no Touch Wiz, MotoBlur removed, ZERO BLOAT!!!!!?!" and then we can be like the other forums.
I second that, OP. Had the NS4G but then bought an SGSII and jumped on AT&T. SGSII was an AWESOME phone hardware-wise, and really liked that I was only paying $10/mo data for unlimited hspa+. But software wasn't as good as stock GB, and I missed the form factor of the NS. So I sold the SGSII and now looking for an AT&T NS, probably a white one since they went down in prices recently...then consider the Nexus 3 when it comes out
I have to agree with most on this board. if you want the newest updates always and if you want all the apps to work with your phone right off the back, stick with nexus. skype and netflix worked with the nexus right off the back, it took a couple of months before most of the other phones caught up. nexus prime is definitely my next phone, and hopefully it drops soon

Does it make sense to buy a Galaxy Nexus now?

Okay, I know it isn't the smartest thing to do but I'm confused. I was planning on buying the next Nexus until Google decided to throw it away by letting LG manufacture it, and no way in hell am I going to buy a LG phone. Still hoping that the multiple OEM news that was around a month or so ago is true. But, just in case it isn't, should I buy a Galaxy Nexus? Will it hold good for another year and a half? In terms of gaming how will it do? State your reasons to buy it and to let it go. Help my brothers, in my hour of need!

I understand LG doesn't have the greatest rep in terms of software/firmware, but I just don't understand the bashing about the LG Nexus. LG won't be even touching the firmware....and honestly, the hardware looks pretty damn amazing to me!! It may not be the absolute most bleeding edge technology inside, but it's perfect for what I use my Nexus for. I don't need a quad core yet at this point.
I'm due for an upgrade next Oct 5, and if I can find a rep who's easy to manipulate I'm gonna try and get an early upgrade to an LG Nexus in the spring after the price drops a little. I'm not a fanboy of any one manufacturer.

Gaming isnt the only feature I want, but yeah its important. And I want a tablet :/
Everything we have heard about the optimus g line so far says it has good build quality.
As others have stated if you want gaming get a 7. The gnex GPU is not the greatest. Scratch that, it sucks. Same as this phone but higher clocked and has to push a 720p display.
People just love to hate lg. Its going to be fun when that phone finally comes out. By far the best nexus phone to come out but all the nooo omg its made by lg so I'll pass.

Of course there will be reports of backlight bleeding. Just like there is for every other LCD based device out there. Including TV, monitors, phones, tablets and so on.
To imply some of the devices will have a backlight bleed because its a lg device and they always have issues is silly.

It is like saying a F1 car will beat a Hyundai, performance wise. But since it is LG building the F1 car, it will be build from macaroni. I really hope Google know what they are doing by letting LG do this.
People just to love to hate LG for some reason. The reviews seem to point to the Optimus G having good built quality and doesn't creek like Samsung phones. Give me a break, try dropping an S3 and see how you like Samsung built quality. If the rumor is true about the S4 quadcore its the current fastest cpu in the market. Guess who make most of the IPS panel for phones, including the HTC One X, and a percentage of the iPhone 5 and MacbookPro retina display?
I still think the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone though and has benefit of removable battery. I likely won't get the LG Nexus, but if and when the price dropped to the current Galaxy Nexus price it will become more compelling.

Oh I'll be getting the GNex once the LG Nexus. Is released, just because I'm almost certain that it's going to be cheaper by then. I also bought my Nexus S when GNex came out and I still got my money's worth in terms of updates. Bottom line is, as long as it's a Nexus phone, you can't go wrong. I don't think Google will let an OEM release a crappy Nexus phone. That would be the same as Steve Jobs releasing an iPhone with a crappy app (like Apple Maps).

Actually, I wouldn't buy a Sony Nexus, my friend used to have a Xperia Arc S till last month, when he'd bought it it was all nice and flashy, but in almost 2 months, the colour of the buttons and rim wore off even though he had a cover on it all the time, and he dropped the phine from a height of around 4 feet, and the plastic cracked.
After reading the LG Optimus G I'm considering buying the LG Nexus. Just waiting for the phone to launch and a few reviews and well, a little finance But if Samsung or HTC were to make their own Nexus phones, I'd gladly buy ine of those.

Blind loyalty is dangerous. HTC rushed the launch of the One X and had tons of problems with it. The DNA/Butterfly seems to be faring better. An all-metal mobile device with multiple radios/antennas is a risky move. Every manufacturer that tried it before (including Apple) has had wireless issues. Based on that, victory rallies and celebration for both HTC and the One should be held off until after it’s been in people's hands for a few months. HTC’s never had any issues with hyping their devices but sometimes that hype has been ahead of the actual device/functionality. So the One could be a turning point for them (I hope it is) or its forum could light up with issues like the One X's did. It's way too early to call.
As for the SGS4. Samsung has a multi-billion dollar chip business and spends billions on R&D specifically for that division. To launch the SGS4 which should sell upward of 50MM units with a competitors SoC is asinine and that SoC would be used for a year's worth of production. Same thing applies to moving to LCD with their huge investment in AMOLED. For them to launch a "me too" device that mirrors the One and XZ would be marketing suicide and they know that. Most of the rumors everyone's picking up originated with Samfirmware which is hardly a reliable source based on their track record. If I was betting, I'd go with the SGS4 having a Samsung SoC and SAMOLED display in addition to other new features not on competitive phones. We'll see in three weeks.
yea i think we need to remind those defect figures were only in the first three months or so after a couple of month build quality picked up immensly
but BarryH is right, early adopters oftern burn
that being said, i think HTC experimented with the DNA/Butterfly well enough to prepare for this launch
this leaves the metal casing, i don't think anything can go awfully wrong just dont hug it and expect signal
There is one big difference to the One X launch
the One X was HTC's first polycarbonate unibody, in metal they are experts, and the One X was really rushed even shipped with freaky unfinished software, the HTC One seems to have been cooking for quiet a while and they are already pretty experienced with those chipsets
So many freaking amazing things about these phones. The decision is becoming waay tough.

Who's "upgrading" to HTC One?

Just want to know if there's worth to do the change or to wait for the next nexus.
I am not going to buy a SGS4, I don't like it, the xperia z is to squared, lg optimus ? Is lg and the HTC seems to be perfect.
Thanks.

I am more seriously considering the rumoured Nexus 4 32GB LTE, if that phone is a flop I may pick up an HTC One later this year.
I had it and liked it a lot. The only reason I went back to my N4 was because I'm scared of how well it will get updated. Overall though I may pick it up again. Its beautiful, fast and everything about it works. I miss some of its kool features already.

Personally, after being sucked into the Nexus line (pun not initially intended, but halfway through typing, fully intended), I won't be leaving for a long time. The Nexus 4 is just such a great phone, and no manufacturer getting in the way of tweaking it. Plus, it's probably half the price of the One. If you're signing a contract, then you have to weigh the pros and cons of that.
Anyway, no, I'm not getting the One. The decision to upgrade can only be made by you. Good luck.
I actually 'downgraded' (ordered the HTC One, waited for a month for it to ship and when I saw they will not have any more stock for a long time, I cancelled the order and bought the N4). I do not regret it at all, seeing how fast it is.

What makes you think a HTC One is an upgrade from a Nexus4?
Will you still think ANY of the above phones are an upgrade when the Nexus4 is sporting Android 5 and they are all still on Android 4.1???

What makes you think android 5 is coming out anytime soon? If anything rumor has it that 4.3 is next in line. Though I will admit manu factors won't be updating to that anytime soon.

The upgrading is quoted which means that I don't necessarily think it's an upgrade. But it is an upgrade in hardware cause it comes with bigger screen ,faster processor and else.
In the software I really don't care cause devs will always keep up with Google as the CM project.
Just wanted to know cause I love the idea of dual speakers.

I've definitely considered it at times, but it's doubtful. It's an absolutely gorgeous phone, and Sense 5 does seem improved.
I really hope HTC gets the next Nexus, their hardware is out of the park but their software is junk.

Once you go Nexus you can't go back!!!
You have been warned!!!
unless the nexus 5 blows me away, I'll probably wait for the 6. I got bills to pay so I can't upgrade every 6 months to whatever "it" phone is on the market like some of u guys. Even though the N4 has a very good camera, I'd like to see Google step up their game and make the next iteration have one of the best cameras on the market.. Also have a 32GB option and I'm good.

Yeah... I want too, I really hope a 32/64gb versions. The memory is necessary and better camera. I hope Google go back to HTC not to Motorola, but I am loving the one design.

Although the one is a very nice device, i will never buy another non nexus device again.
The hardware is great, typical HTC, but as long as they are stuck on stupid when it comes to skinning the UI I won't be buying another non-nexus device (unless I go back to apple.)
The One is great, but 600 Euro??? Like an apple phone...
So I'll use my Nexus in the next months.

[Q] Should i trust in LG G2?

Hey Guys, i am a RAZR MAXX owner here and really tempted with LG G2 because of the price here and its technology (mainly the GRAM) and its battery life. However i am put off by the software side though, as it is a bit too cartoonish for me and i really hate those overblown statusbar buttons and some LG history of late ROM update. So.. should i forget about that and take the plunge? I actually am a Sony fan, but their UI is too elegant for me that i will waste my money on my paid icon themes besides the power consumption of the Sony's (esp the screen) is rather high for now so i thought that maybe the LG G2 is the bang of the buck for me.
So to sum it off, here are my concerns:
+ Battery Life
+ Top class chipset
- LG UI (but that's the main point, so i can replace it with my Nova and Icon pack without feeling hesitant rather than with the Sony's UI )
- almost non existent future update from LG (please CMIIW)
Any input will be appreciated
I came from sony,i used x10,xs,xz and xz1 and i am happy that i left sony and i did not regret.
This is my first lg phone and i love it,i don't know how the updates will be but sony is not that fast.
Xperia Z took 6 months to get 4.2.2 from 4.1.2

Yeah Motorola is know for their fast updates.... NOT
Sent from my LG-D801 using xda app-developers app
I took the plunge, coming from an HTC Thunderbolt. LG has already started better than many other manufacturers by releasing a phone with top specs, a current version of the OS (barely behind what is on the Nexus line, not several versions behind like some other new phones when released), and posted the source less than a month after the release. This phone is also easily rootable, the dev's are hard at work on their different projects such as modifications to stock, CM in alpha, etc. Few manufacturers have a great track record when it comes to timely updates or support after the first year, but LG is in the game already with a good start and the dev community should be able to keep this phone updated well past the time when this phone is "older" in the tech world.
I'd say check out the phone, read the reviews, see the support we have already, and base your decision off of that. This is a phone that should easily last me for 2 years or more until I decide to get another one.
G2 is the superior phone & fulfills all your needs. Change the launcher if you don't like the stock one and you're good to go!
Not sure if you are a rooter or not and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I'm kind of worried about development for the G2. So if you do like tinkering, just keep the slow start in mind. I love and appreciate the work the devs put into these devices. I do donate, btw. Just wasn't expecting the slow start with available roms. I thought this device's forum was going to explode

As I noticed that you're Indonesian I suggest you to look for a promotion or discount price for g2. I just bought my G2 three days ago at LG G2 Promotion, Central Park, Jakarta.
One of the best deal I've made. Got IDR 1 million cashback (from the original price IDR 6.8mil) and a bluetooth device. As for the phone itself, coming from Nexus 4, I find G2 noticeably faster and smoother out of the box than my N4. I am proud owner of N4 but compared to G2 (stock vs stock), it's way a different world. Only with custom rom and kernel (PA rom and hellscore kernel) my N4 get near the smoothness of G2. Maybe the only thing I miss is that the development here is not as much as Nexus generation devices.

To OP: you don't have to worry about dev for LG. Just sit, relax and this phone will get the ROMs it deserves. If you think LG is bad, think again (I'm looking at YOU, Motorola).
There are so many launchers and icon packs that will replace Lg ui. G2 will also receive 4.4 updates so that will ties your up for a while.
Devs for g2 are doing great works. Root, recoveries, are avaliable. If you are not in to flashing rom you can stop with rooting your phone, and be happy with the things you can do.
Personally I came from nexus device. I flash roms every other weeks to try to get best battery life and smoothness for my phone. With G2 hardwares and battery, I am enjoying stock, forget about flashing and just uses the phone.

First, this is NOT an attack on you personally so please dont take it that way. But what the hell phones did you guys come from that make the dev and forum for this phone slow?! This forum is about to eclipse the size of my last phone that is 2 years old! And that LG phone didn't have anything for several months. This phone already has bootloader bypass and root and a few roms going with more on the way. Maybe it's not as fast as Samsung devices that have millions upon millions of sales in a couple of days, but compared to many phones this is quite quick. Chill, it's coming. My last phone was slow for dev due to small sale base and only one carrier, but we still had official CM and MANY others. There will most certainly be no shortage of development here.

Hah! Yes they are really slow, even when considering their position as Google company.. But again, the battery on the maxx is still phenomenal to this day. Thats why i am eyeing the G2 as a suitable replacement
