[Q] S4 yellow tinge or tint - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello xda members,
I am very sorry if i posted in wrong section but i have a mega panic attack
i bought a new galaxy s4 and within a day i noticed that white colors are kinda yellowish
on acknowledging it i called samsung and they told me to go the service centre
when i visited the service centre the person there was like it's not any fault and this happens when the manufacturing of the display is different due to version or time
he made me compare it with a reddish white phone and a blueish white phone
the bluewish white phone was much superior and the quality was perfect, the reddish one was pathetic
in all he told me there was no defect in the phone and it was perfect but i find it really hard to believe as the quality of my display is so poor and pathetic ,attached an image of me comparing the display of s4 with my monitor screen(20 inch LG LED monitor i guess)
so i want to ask is this normal because i m having a really hard time on the thought of living with this display
so m planning to go to the head office of samsung tomorrow and see if they find this issue or not
had such wonderful time with s2,miss those days with s2
i thought upgrading will be worth it after living with s2 but it has made my life miserable

My display has a little bit yellowish white too when I compare it to my LED Screen. But it doesn't bother me, cause I know it's the way amoled displays work. They never had perfect white when compared to IPS or LED.
Edit: I think your S4 has more yellowish tint than mine does. But it may be cause the camera plays with the saturation or so. Dunno.

Thanks for your reply i read in some threads that this is what you pay for clearer blacks,
but in my s2 i get whites almost same as in LED monitor, My s4 is more yellower than the LCD on my old laptop
I am having hard time accepting this yellowish white
and will give it a try at the samsung centre again tomorrow and update the result

It is not normal... too yellowish as I see on your picture.. mine is fine.. demand a replacement...

samsung hit me hard this time
they kept the device for 2 days telling me that it was a software issue , they didn't even do anything with the device just kept for 2 days so that m out of the 7 day period for replacement
they are telling me that i am the only one reporting this issue so they can't do anything if i had 5-10 people with the same issue then only they will do something
In all just wasted all my money on the s4 and feelling like throwing it in dustbin

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 in the Philippines

Hi Guys,
I hope this thread can serve as a venue for the owners of a 7.7 in the Philippines.
I just got mine yesterday from Fortress, Hong Kong. 16GB WiFi only device, but thats exactly what I was looking for since having another device with unlimited internet would be redundant. No issues so far, although I still need to get used to TW and HC. I love the screen and, so far, the battery life is wonderful with being on for 9 hours and 30 min and 2 hours screen-on time and WiFi always on netting me with 74% more battery to use up. Amazing for Android, if you ask me!
Thats cool bro. Large LCD with amoled plus...
Sent from my Galaxy SII using Tapatalk
Waiting for this to arrive on the Philippines market that comes from Samsung, warranty matters a lot.
I hope the screens they used on the Tab 7.7 dont have the common SAMOLED issues.
just got mine a while ago still charging it to full before using it
@earlz
there are sellers in tipidcp with samsung warranty already be sure to check for the ntc logo at the back got mine for 30.5k with 1 year samsung warranty
mall prices are outrageous going as high as 37.5k XD

Im located in Cebu City, so buying from them is not an option since I cannot see the examine the screen first hand.. Samsung has been giving us shoddy quality control lately and I had my Galaxy S2 refunded after 7 replacements due to the yellow tint and other screen issues, my Galaxy Note is also in refund process. I understand that my standards where set high with the first SAMOLED device (S8500 and Galaxy S1) that never had issues so I expect nothing less than flawless for a 30K+ device.
EDIT:
The prices you see in malls are they official samsung retailers or import units ?
I was told that the purchase includes international warranty. Even Asus was adapting this policy. In any case, I have not noticed any light bleeding, yellow tint or dead pixels, but ill continue to observe.
Usage so far: 16 hours, 5 hour screen on, WiFi on the entire time with full sync and I'm at 30% . I'm charging now, but it has exceeded my expectations when it comes to battery life.
Just for the sake of comparison, I got the tab under 24k.

Samsung Philippines does not honor international warranty, I verified that with the supervisor from the an authorized service center just yesterday unless she didnt get the memo yet. But if they do honor it its great.

As long as you send them your defective device they will honor the warranty but if you send it through an Asus store they wont accept it.

Well SAMOLED has no backlight bleeding but it has spots/blotches when displaying a black image visible in dark rooms.
Im concerned if there are any visible horizontal or vertical lines when rendering greys, this seems to be common with the Galaxy Nexus and Note, rare on the S2, none on the Galaxy S1.
Can you try these images for me on your tap? and where did you get it for 24k?
The last 2 pictures I attached his how the jedi image looks like on my galaxy note.. visible lines and greenish greys.. the last picture is a snapshop of my greys.. I've the jedi image and the grey images on a Galaxy S2, no lines what so ever even if I squint my eyes and look for it.
I tried the images and the greys remain grey. They do look like etchings on a circuit board, but i assume that the image is supposed to be like that. The jedi i!age is light green but not as flauresent as the one you attaced from your note. I also tried blck in a dark room and i dont see yellow anywhere. Ill keep checking just to make sure it stays that way. Thanks for the tips!
About the price; i bought the device from HK, Fortess at central to be exact, but its available everywhere at the same price. There are no deviation from srp from any major retailor be it fortress or broadway. There are grey unit stores, however, i suggest you stay away from them. Actual price is 4088 HK and it translates 23k and change.

For the dark room test you need to display a black image, have you eyes adjust from the darkness to about 5mins then see if you get a uniform faint glow on the blacks or if there any darker or whiter spots.
The grey image is just a solid color there should be no lines or etchings, it should be the same on what you see on a computer monitor.. just a solid block of grey. This is an important factor for me.
I initially thought you purchased the Tab here in the Philippines, I thought its already in the market. The jedi image is supposed to be grey if you look at it on a Galaxy S1, Galaxy S2, Iphone4, Nokia 5800 and probably all of the other display devices.. That image is my ultimate test for screen quality but its not a deal breaker, as long as there are no visible lines and screen brightness is even then its all good.
Thanks for taking the time to perform the tests for me, at least I have an idea what to expect.. I'll just have to wait when the unit arrives here in the Philippines but for now based on your grey test the screen already fails for me
One more thing, aside from the memory capacity variants is there a wifi only version for this ?
The greys are gray, but I must say there are slight degrees of grey.
The unit I have is WiFi only.
You mean that the shade of grey is not uniform on the enitre screen?
The etchings I was describing is due to slight changes in grey. Very subtle, but I can see it. Then again, I once thought a grey shirt was green.
Oh, and I tried the image on my dhd and I don't see the shade difference. Must be the 7.7 then.
Thanks for the feedback at least I know what to expect.
CMK has it on stock, 29K for the 16GB 3G model.
That's not bad! Go get them, people!
I'll wait for the local dealer to have it on stocks, if CMK has then the local samsung store should have it with in the same week, Also im a bit disappointed that the grey rendering is not perfect, the Galaxy S2 did it perfectly on some units.. I'll just have to be ultra picky with my purchase
Ive attached a sceenshot of the gray image for you to check out. I hope it will help you make a decision.

A screenshot wont help its basically resending me the file, If you can take a steady shot photo in a dark room, that should give me a glimps of what you see.

GS3: Viewing Angles and bluish tint

Hi everyone. After GS1, GS2 I've bought GS3.
Really disappointed for the viewing angles (on whites/grays), the worst I've aver found in amoled/ips lcd recently.
As I tilt the screen 15-20 degrees (normal use movement exspecially when you write/use it with one hand) during mail, web, whatsapp all the whites begin to show a sort of polarized/light blue reflection that seems to be caused by Gorilla Glass/amoled interaction. Very very annoying and tiring for my eyes, and of course not beautiful to see on a 600€ 4,8" display.
On Italian forums I have to say 90% of users experienced this, but maybe in my GS3 this effect is more prominent, difficult to say, I cannot compare by now.
I'd like to have feedbacks from you, don't know if return it and buy a new one.
Cheers.
Im swapping mine in store for the same reason.

Hi.
Is the new one replaced better?
I never understood why viewing angles were a problem. You're using your phone wrong if you need to view it at a 20 degree plus angle.

Never had viewing angle issues with past phones. Never.
With this GS3 simply cannot move it, or I have a blu reflection.
Just want to know if it's just mine.
It's the same with all amoleds ...but I don't think it affects the usage that much and it's only noticeable on plain white backgrounds ...
Haven't been to swap it yet. Im going tomorrow i'll let you know. Been having call issues were it sounds like I've gone under water about 1 min into some calls.
My mate works in a phone shop and said he swapped 3 sgs 3 for call issues today alone

I have exactly the same thing on the lower part of the screen. The grey's temperature is "colder" than the rest of the screen. If you test the screen with "*#0*#" with the three diff colours is fine, the "issue" is only with white and grey background.

I see but the thing is i had sgs1, two sgs 2 ( white and black), two galaxy nexus (white and black), all of them had a blue tint when viewed at an angle .... Though I also know many have said that they don't have tint but I never got any galaxy without tint just my luck I suppose... Htc one x slcd2 doesnt have that issue but battery life is too poor on it that's why got sgs3...sgs3 is superb in every way..

This sound quality issue sounds very much like a problem described in other threads.
Perhaps you have already seen this, but if not, be aware that the problem has been solved by the majority of people simply by switching OFF the "noise reduction" feature under "Call Settings" (it's set ON be default)
Thanks for the reply but I had seen the other threads and switched off noise cancellation but still suffered from the "underwater" problem
Thanks
Nik

Sorry for the delay
Sorry for the delay in replying to this thread. I have just got back from the Carphone Warehouse where I checked four different Pebble Blue S3's...guess what.....They all had a Purple tint to them.
When They where first booted up they looked "OK" but when I turned the brightness all the way up and open a white webpage like google you could see a purple hue/tint to the screen but it looked fine when you look at it straight on,
I only have another 4 day before I can exchange mine for a new phone, seriously considering getting a HOX instead at this point. Or failing that sitting in a Samsung Service centre until I find one that doesn't have this awful tint.
I'll keep posting on this thread if I manage to find ones without the tint but I've got a feeling that the CPW UK has got a bad batch in at the moment.
My screen seems okay in regards to tint overall but the top 20% of the screen or so is bluer othan the rest and it gets gradually worse as you get to the top edge. At first it didn't bother me so much but now it's starting to get annoying =(

UPDATE(14-07) GsmArena publishes the Galaxy Note's screen issues. Check it out!

Hi,
I wont say I'm new to XDA as I've been following XDA since the Windows Mobile 6.5 days. I was even a member of xda then but unfortunately forgot my account details when I switched to using a Nokia N900 for a year or so. I moved on to the Galaxy SII last year and have been following XDA again since then. I finally sold my SGS II and bought the Galaxy Note last week. And this device has finally brought the need to join again. I never tried playing videos initially, but in a few days I played some videos which were randomly scattered in my sd card and I discovered that every video looks sick on my phone. There were black and purplish pixellation on almost all the dark scenes (even HD videos and FullHD videos, even the ones taken by the phone's camera) and upon googling it, I came to know in detail about this issue. I went through every thread in this forum related to this issue and even found supercurio's abandoned thread. Exchanging phones here in India is a painful experience. Samsung gives a 4day exchange policy which is a headache and after reading through the threads, I realised that there is no point fighting for a replacement or changing the screen as I may end up getting another issue while this issue would still persist to some degree. Since this black clipping problem is going on since release without any solution as of now, I posted the issue to GSMArena along with links to the threads here stating the issue. I never expected them to publish it but check out GsmArena today.

Its not that I expect anything from Samsung, but atleast they have to givevan explanation now as this is in the media. I just bought the note a week ago and everything is perfect. No spots, no tints, no hues, nothing. Everything looks flawless untill I apply a dark wallpaper or play any video. And thats when you realise how disgusting it looks. Even HD videos. Everybody knows that the Note isnt cheap and here in India, nothing is easy. It takes a month or more to recieve a product after warranty. The service team is so bothered about fixing your device as it comes back scratched and scuffed and with other new issues. Replacement period here is 4days and going through that itself is a pain. I still remember waiting for my GSII replacement for almost 9hrs trying to explain to the blind engineers about the Yellow tint which was obvious on the left side of the display. Showed them all the threads online regarding this widespread issue, as it was a 'one of a kind' issue for them. After finally waiting for hours, they finally gave me a DOA with 'screen fade' as the issue. And when my next GSII exhibited the same issues and I went back for replacement the same day, they refused to replace it telling they can only process a DOA for a customer once. They called the Head office here and the retarded 'engineer' said that he couldnt see any tints while he clearly accepted that there is a slight yellow tint on the left side at my face. Finally after talking to Samsung Head office here and after a lot of arguements and hours of waiting, they finally gave me a second DOA. And guess what, the third one was just marginanally better or so I felt but the tint was staring at you on the face. But I gave up and decided to live with it due to the experience I went through. Luckily a kernel update later seemed to fix or hide the issue. Hence, I dont prefer going for warranty or fighting for replacement (which is almost impossible now as its been a week or more) over an issue which may still persist or another new random issue. So for the money I paid, atleast I deserve an explanation from Samsung before I decide what to do. Thats what made me report this to Gsmarena. I wonder why people here just decided to live with it when the issue was stabbing you at the face without a solution and its been almost a year.
I got my gnote 3 days ago I'm on Cm9 and don't have that but my screen sometimes goes from perfect to intermitent yellowish back to perfect again.. Don't know if this its a known issue or a Cm9 kernel issue

I have been living with it, but only due to the reasons you habe given, I am on my third Note, all have had the black crush, I called samsung only to be told that they do not know of yhe proble (thats a lie) and that I need to send my third brand new device in fir repair, I told em to stick it. I am just so fed up with hitting my head against a brick wall that I have pretty much given up on this ever being fixed.
Thank you for letting GSM arena know. I don't think anyone should have to live with a defective product especially if it costs an arm and a tooth. Outside of the US, people pay full price for these things and that's why companies like Samsung need to take it seriously. I don't care if the number of defective units is small, the fact that it exists means that Samsung has f****d up and needs to come out with a fix. AND if they can't rectify it via software, then recall the damn things. Owners of defective units or even just sympathizers should be posting like crazy over at GSMARENA and other news channels if we really want Samsung to take action.

I agree with you that chances are few that a fix may come out, but we deserve an explanation for the kind of money we paid and a solution whatever be it. As far as I've seen, most phones here in India are affected. Atleast every phone I've seen and judging by the comments in the original threads, a lot more. Hence, this isnt an isolated case at all. And when every phone in the vicinity experiences it, it becomes very difficult to get a warranty here in India as Samsung immediately blasts out that it is a feature rather than a defect.
Using applications such as a screen filter or Screen Adjuster is pointless as it reduces the contrast and makes the blacks grayer to hide the issue. And for the resulting contrast, it would have been better going for an LCD panel rather than calling it an AMOLED. My GS2 never had any problems playing dark scenes and blacks were pitch black. But the note's screen isnt even true black in the dark. But then most AMOLEDs still look dark gray in darkness but atleast every other AMOLED based device I've seen has played back videos and images well and blacks were jet black in real life situations and I've never noticed black crush or clipping on any other phone. On my Note, the black and purplish pixellation is visible in a well lit room. So its really unpleasant to watch any video or look at any dark image. But the whites and other colours are perfect and browsing is a treat. Thats what makes me feel this isnt a screen or hardware defect
Could everyone who feel their Notes are affected by the black crush/clipping, please leave comments on the gsmarena article. Samsung should know the severity of the issue from the number of comments on that article. Only then will they respond to the situation. In the meanwhile, I'm mailing other reputed tech blogs to bring this issue to light. Lets wait and hope for the best.

I tend to agree with you. I cant remember having problems with stills, just video. I'll not go through the whole rigmarole of the various tests, but suffice to say that I feel confident that I managed to isolate this to software.

I've posted on the comments @gsmarena and dropped in my penny worth about the eMMc issues. My thanks to you for making this effort and getting it a wider attention. Please let us know of the other blog/web sites when you get their attention.
Cheers
Its been almost 24hrs since the article came up on gsmarena and we havent heard from Samsung yet.
..and I'm afraid we we'll not hear them.
As far as I know Sammy is well aware about this issue, there is a post that also cover this issue (from Supercurio) but now it has been closed.
Unfortunately Sammy prefer to release new device and not to investigate in faulty one....sad rules of businness.
Bye

Persistent, focused pressure.
But yes, the big corp does work that way, until public pressure hurts the corporate image.
Persistent, focused pressure.
Because there is a very simple fix to it...

Screen issues on dark greys/blacks

I'm on my 5th replacement S4, all because of screen issues!
This is my current (5th) handset and I notice horrible green tint and stripes on the screen when on low brightness in a dark room.
Before you say it, "but this isn't normal conditions" this is my normal conditions when I use my phone at home. My room is dim.
And my S, S2 and S3 all didnt do this.
Anyone else notice this sort of problem??
Yes my first s4 had the stripes in low light.
My second replacement didn't have the stripes but has the pink tint on the lower half of the screen.
Not sure whether i should risk exchanging this one and get another s4 with a different screen issue.
I saw ur screen shot.. do u mean by green tint in left sides from corners?
If yes then its faulty.. and ignore the answer which is written below
If u mean why black is horible in settings menu like settings, file manger..
Then I have truth answer of that shot..
We all know samsung have smearing thing like we move text on settings its looks bad ghosting caused by true black pixel(turned off in black fully)..so for that, samsung did change they make a black intensity to 0 to 1% in settings menus..
So, for fixing smearing issue they did that..
If u have doubt with black.. then open a pure black image or download screen test from play store..
See the black should fine..
Dont trust on black on settings..
Its normal normal normal normal..
Edit. And I seen u are in custom rom..
Well the notification bar it's pure black and see the menu side..(file manager)
I hope it helps

In my opinion, with the S4 you just end up replacing one issue with another!
Trust me I've had 5 replacements and not one has had a perfect screen
I've given up on my quest for perfection now, which I don't think is to much to ask for one of the most expensive phones on the market!
Samsung have let themselves down on this one.

That's a shame. I would exchange the phone for a HTC one but I don't want to give up the 5 inch screen, user replaceable battery, and micro SD card.
Hoping Samsung comes out with a firmware fix for the pink tint like they did with the s2.

This issue isn't software related.
It's a very poorly made AMOLED display. Samsung only have $$$ in mind.
It is a shame, and believe me, if the HTC One had an SD card slot I would totally own one right now!
I don't disagree with you, but if they can provide a software workaround i'll take it.
If they can do some type of filter to the bottom or top of the screen to offset the pink tint that would fix the issue most likely.
I'm thinking that's what Samsung did to fix the yellow tint on the left side of the screen for the galaxy s2.
I don't see why Samsung can't do that for the s4.

U r feeling over shame..lol..
There is still no competitor of samsung..
Samsung amoled have pure black.. truly pixels off in black. Amoled have high saturated coloure.
Htc and sonys display are sufffering moslty from dead pixel but in s4 is no dead pixels..
I love amoled screen..even I have slightly tint..which not noticable..
If samsung have $$$ in mind then its not enough and not true..
Samsung have $$$ because their product have high sales becauase its best and people like it..
I know that u r sad because u got bad piece after replacement too..
My suggestion is sell it and buy s4 from original shop...
Trust me u will get perfect device...
I was non samsung fan until I buy from local shops..that results in so many faults..
After buying from original center, now I have original handset...

I got all 5 phones from reputable shops here in NZ.
The first 2 were from 2Degrees and the last 3 from Vodafone.
We don't have a Samsung store here so I've gone to the best places that are available to me.
I feel this new Full HD AMOLED panel was rushed to market and didn't have the proper quality control or testing done. Simple.
Yes I'm a bit annoyed over it, but not sad.
There are much worse things going on the world right now than my phone having a green screen.
I was just wanting to know if it really is worth me chasing the perfect screen or if everyone else is experiencing issues like this.
I got my s4 here in nz too. The firmware was out of date and I had horrible blacks in videos too. I flashed to the German firmware and it's night and day better with proper blacks etc. My only complaint now is the yellow green tint on the screen, really annoys me watching movies. It disappears if you tilt the screen slightly but when viewed straight on everything has a faint yellow tint.
I agree with what was said above - my view is it's just a poor screen.

half of the screen has pink shading :(

As always, every samsung device I have owned except note 2 has screen issues. Im starting to hate this amoled tech. I had 3 s4's and everyone of them has this pink shade in some part of the screen. Now this note 3 has the same issue actually its worse. I think I need to get rid of this and buy a phone with lcd screen.
Anyone noticing the same issue or am I getting realy bad luck?

get your phone exchange or refunded asap!
it sound more like a defect than a feature.
LCD also has issues.
Mine had a cream tint over 2/3 of the screen, which was not to obvious until browsing certain forums, where you'd scroll a message up and it would noticeably change color.
I took mine back to the store for exchange, and despite showing them what looked obvious to my eyes, they just couldn't apparently see it... Luckily, they where kind enough to order a new one and exchange it anyway, so will see how the new one does on Tuesday.
Some people are blind to such things, my One X had the yellow spots, so sent that in, and the replacement was much better, to they point I could easily live with it.. My two nexus 7s are fine, and every other Samsung device in their store looked good enough that I'd be happy, so I feel justified in getting an exchange...
I sold mine and bought another, lost about 50$ . Newer one has yellow hue or tint in right bottom cornor in whites and grays. I deserve this I guess, I didnt learn my lesson.
