[Q] Contact stock app crashes / freezes on "Updating contact list" - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 with Android 4.2.2 for the last 3 weeks and it worked without any problems. Since 3 days however the contact stock app crashes / doesnt open at all with black screen or freezes with the message "Updating contact list...". I didn't change any settings or installed any new apps during that time. The error also seems to crash the call stock app, where call log, favorites, contacts etc. are also not displayed. In most cases when the error appears I cannot even open the call app and initiate a phone call. Incoming calls just show the number but do not get matched to any contacts.
The error appears randomly and then lasts for 2-3 hours, after which the app works again normally. Rebooting, clearing cache or clearing dalvic cache has no effect.
All my contacts are synched with Google, Samsung account, Twitter, Facebook & Linkedin. I have tried deactivating each & all of the syncs but this had no effect. I also tried displaying only contacts with numbers or only contacts from a certain account in settings but this also had no effect on the error.
Any other suggestions on what could be tried to fix this? Thank you very much in advance!

I might have traced down the reason for this and it could be related to the "sync people details" option for the Google account sync. I have now deactivated the sync and have to monitor if the error still occurs. Has anyone else experienced similar problems due to this setting?

Same problem here, occurred at about the same date early sep 2013 with the same phone.... Galaxy S4, T Mobile, Android 4.2.2. The android.process.acore goes ape**** and block all apps that use the contact list: I can no longer text, phone or email, for a couple of hours. After that, everything goes back to normal for half a day like nothing ever happened. Then all hell break lose again. I called T-Mobile, Samsung and Google.
T-Mobile has the same fix for any conceivable problem: reinstall the entire system OR change the phone. How subtle!
Samsung won't deal with any client problem whatsoever.
Google was the best - hands down. They spent time with me trying to figure the problem out. Ultimately, they recommended rooting the phone - which is not great because I use wifi calling, which requires a bit of tmobile code. Frankly, I would love to get rid of TMobile's bloatware, but they have a way to control their clients with wifi calling.
Still working on getting this pb resolved.

I installed an app called "Contact Remover", deleted all contacts and then re-synched them and at the same time deactivated the sync for the "Sync People Details" option. Since then the error only appeared one more time (no idea why ..) but it seems as if that mostly fixed the issue.

Possible solution

It looks like disabling all unnecessary sync relieves the performance to a normal level.
In particular, disabling "Sync Contacts" (under Accounts/Skype) from Skype made a big improvement performance for my SG4.

The contacts Facebook association bug

.. is really starting to p*ss me off. I'm going to get really sick really quickly of having to re-associate all my contacts with their Facebook profiles every time the Hero decides to spontaneously delete them.
Has anyone found a workaround?
Edit: Hmmm... seems if you close all the background HTC processes like com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and com.htc.album:remote with TasKiller, it'll re-update everything when the processes start back up again.
It's still stupid!
And if you decided not to update your contact picture when you linked them, it will overwrite your specific photo anyway ! that's also very anoying if you don't want the facebook photos !
That's funny I was just logging in to report this problem. It happened to me for the first time today. It really pissed me off that for no reason all my facebook associations got deleted from contacts, rebooting the phone and killing the process didn't bring them back either. I don't even have the process com.htc.album:remote running in task killer. They need to get an improved rom out and fast, i've had this phone less than a week and i'm really starting to miss my iphone.
This happened to me today, but it was because for some reason I had been logged out of FB. Otherwise, I have not experienced this 'deletion' issue...
Strange.
Does anyone know why the phone would just log you off of facebook? Is there any good way to avoid this? I hope logging on to facebook on a computer doesn't kick you off.
I'm glad I saw this thread and that I am not the only one!
It is getting very annoying but I expect it will be fixed eventually, I just hope it doesn't take too long!
This happened to me the first time yesterday. And 2 other people in this thread had it happen yesterday. Maybe it's something at facebooks end. There could be some sort of timeout and were all getting logged out at the same time.
it is very odd.
Sat here at work, there's four of us with hero's now.
one of us gets it, the other three don't.
the two G2 devices don't, and only one of the Orange Hero's gets it.
very strange.
Okay I think that I can guess what is happening here. I have the same problem with my Facebook contacts losing their picture status and albums about every 24 hours (on stock G2). I know that when I leave my browser up overnight on my Facebook page, Facebook will log me out. I presume that it is doing the same thing with this phone and suspect that HTC did not spend long enough testing the ‘people’ application to observe this. I further guess that when the phone is logged out by Facebook it does not try to sign in again, deleting the information previously retrieved when a refresh is unsuccessful. I am not a developer and don’t have any way to back all this up but if I am correct then HTC would need to implement a workaround for this behaviour in order to fix it. Probably the easiest way to do this would be to have the application:
1. Automatically sign in again (signing out if necessary) every 12 hours or so.
2. Retain previously cached data, e.g. pictures, unless explicitly deleted even when Facebook refresh is unavailable.
This doesn’t fix the problem of the now-permanently unlinked Facebook contact (as per Don Vincenzo on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4276194#post4276194) but it would be an improvement.
I hard reset earlier which had previously fixed it, but now it only shows that I have one Facebook contact to choose from and no one else can be linked from.
It shows it as if I have only one Facebook friend.
Very strange.
Yep had the same issues.
Ultimately I found the best cure is just to wait for the two hours before it automatically updates everything.
I've only gone through my contact list once and linked all the profiles, however I have appeared to have "lost" the link many times...
So basically don't do anything, just wait.. lol they will return
Never had this issue yet but all my facebook - contact information is also sync'd with the exchange server
I was afraid that after my master reset I would have to reassociate all of my contacts but it seems that the association is stored on google contacts too, so they just all came back again
Its been 2 days now and my associations have not come back, man that's gonna suck if it resets them every couple of days. The facebook integration was one of the main selling points for me for the phone. I sync my contacts with outlook so I don't have any under my gmail name. Is it better to import all my contacts in to gmail so it retains my facebook links? If so is there a way I can sync the contacts that are already on my phone to my gmail account from my phone?
I may or may not have found a solution, or a way of preventing it. I'm using TasKiller to close all my running processes every few hours to preserve battery life etc. I noticed that when I put some of the system processes in the ignore list, (com.htc.socialnetwork.provider for example) the Facebook problem happened again. If I don't have any processes in the ignore list, and make sure to kill them once or twice a day, my contacts stay associated with Facebook.
Last time my contacts associations disappeared, I killed all running processes, took everything out the ignore list and went into the People app, and scrolled along to the facebook updates page. I hit menu, then 'update now'. This restored everything back to the way it was.
The disassociation just happened for me again - all my contacts suddenly needed reconnecting.
This is a different problem to the one I was discussing in the other thread 'It's a wee bit buggy...', where previously available contact data (profile pic, birthday, albums etc) can now not be retrieved by the Hero once a contact is linked. This functionality has not returned since it first occurred for me, and means that, irrespective of the associations holding, only about 75% of those contacts on the device that should be able to sync actually successfully sync. From what I can tell, this could possibly be an issue with Facebook privacy settings, though why it only happened a week after having the device I'm not sure.
With regard to the associations holding after a hard reset, the People app on the device stores the Facebook association data in the 'Notes' field of the contact, which is then synced to Google Contacts. If you wipe and then re-download your contacts from Google, this info comes back with it, and the People app then sees those contacts as linked. Given this, it seems even stranger that the links get broken in the first place, as it suggests that for some reason that the data in that field is not persistent...
Have the association loss occasionally but I find if you ignore it then the association comes back after a little while.
In relation to some (but not all) friends losing associations it is due to the friend changing their Facebook application settings. My girlfriend's photo disappeared a week ago, so I got her to change her fb settings and it came back. Not sure why it happened a week ago cause she changed the setting longer ago than that, but guess it is Facebook, not HTC.
Has anyone reported this to HTC? Its happening far too frequently on my gf's (pink) Hero.
So maybe it's not the same but it's definitely related:
I've now gotten to the point where I can not view my own contact details when I'm logged into facebook. That is, if I am signed in, and I try to view my contact card, I get a crash in process "android.process.acore" (this also happens when trying to update my status). If I edit my details and make sure I'm signed out of facebook, everything is fine except that all details of all linked profiles disappear...
Can anybody else confirm this?
BTW, I noticed that if you sign out using your contact card, and then sign in again (miraculously this does work!) the People app will retry to link friends to your facebook friends, so you can "force" a resync this way...
I keep getting this issue too. What i do is go to contacts, then on to the 'updates' tab, my contact card still shows my pic and me as logged in. I then press menu and update now. This resyncs all my contacts straight away. Annoying i know but at least it recognises them again after a bit.

Gmail sync is busted

My Gmail sync is busted. I am not getting incoming emails nor sending outgoing mails. When i scroll down my old emails, at the point where it starts to load more older ones, I instead get a message "No connection" and "retry" button. Retry is unsuccessful.
When i go into the data and synchronization setting and manually try to sync the gmail, I get a 1-frame-flash on the bottom which flashes me a message saying "Sync is not currently experiencing problems. Please try again later".
I then add a secondary gmail account and it syncs perfectly!! But my primary one doesn't work! I can't remove my primary account and re-add it unless I do a factory reset...which I don't want to do.
I've tried a reboot and it didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?
I've got the same problem today. It seems that it's a server problem.
Server problem, even though a secondary account synced fine?
If I'm not the only one...then that makes me feel better.
I have this issue with WM
I use Google sync with WM device (My N1 should arrive tomorrow) and have had a similar (if not exact) problem. When I receive a mail from a specific sender ([email protected]) 90% of the cases it breaks the sync. I also sync that same account via IMAP on a secondary account in my WM device - just in case.. syncing every 30 minutes.. (that sync works fine) so I can use the IMAP account to delete the problematic mail.. and then, once deleted (or archived if I use the web interface) the problem is gone.
Try to find if there was a mail message you got that caused the problem. it is probably either the last synced mail or the one just after that...
Update:
The sync fixed itself this morning. It started syncing nonstop for a good hour (I'm on ATT Edge too) and I wasn't sure what it was doing, but the end result is I can now get my emails and notifications again.
On a separate note, I also noticed that now in my Gmail app, I can access every email dating back to 9/11/09. That's hundreds of emails. And If I scroll all the way to the bottom, there's no more loading earlier conversations, so 9/11/09 is the farthest back I can access my email without searching.
Does anyone know that there is such a limit to looking into past emails? Also, Anyone know why it doesn't just expose a 15-20 emails at a time like previously? Is it because once the email is exposed, it's cached somewhere and I don't need to load it anymore? If so, I'd love to know where I can delete this cache.
Some other members have experienced a similar issue with no sync. They fixed the broken sync by doing this(and this is how you can clear that cache as well)
Setting->Apps->Manage Apps-> gmail/gmail storage->clear data and cache(if you can, on my G1 I can just clear data, no cache shows)
You will probably just want to clear the gmail storage one, but doing both probably wouldn't be that big of a deal.

On older versions of Android, we could clear the cache on all Google apps... but this isn't available through the Manage Applications screen in 2.1. Not sure why Google took out this feature.. Previously if Gmail stopped synching, we would clear the cache and it would start working again. Hopefully this doesn't become an unfixable issue with 2.1.

They took it out? That sucks! Can you do the clear data at least? And I could swear I read someone with a Nexus One had this issue, and cleared the data or cache for gmail and fixed it... maybe it was in the G1 forum, starting to get confused following both at the same time.

Aha I found it! I may be an Android noob but I can still be useful.
Within Manage Apps, click hit Menu > Filter > All. This will expose all the native apps as well and you can clear your cache till the cows come home. I just found this a minute ago and cleared out my cache for my Gmail, default browser, and Youtube. That felt sooooo good, since I'm such a storage nazi.

[Q] Issue with the Gmail App

For some reason my Gmail App has stopped working properly about 1hr ago. Every time I open the app the conversations start loading then get to the bottom of the screen the force close message below pops up:
"The process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. dumpstate_app_201008062027_com_google_process_gapps.log has been saved. Use *#9900# to copy out log."
No success after rebooting the phone several times. Can anyone please shed some light? I really have no clue to what happened ... now I have to use the email client .
Thanks in advance for your help, really appreciate it.
I just checked to see if it was a problem with the app itself and mine is loading all conversations fine. Did you delete or replace anything prior to?
No I didn't do anything to the phone, not even install or uninstall any apps. This is so strange.
Maybe try removing the account and doing it again... It shouldn't mess anything else up. I'll try it out on my phone now to confirm.
[Update] Wouldn't let me do it because it's the primary. A factory reset is the only way to completely remove it. You can try clicking on sync gmail to stop it and then click on it again to force a refresh. Idk if that'll fix your particular problem though
Try going to settings, applications, manage applications, menu button, filter, all. Select gmail, clear data and clear cache. Then do the same with gmail storage, then try to resync.

I did a factory setting, unfortunately it did not fix the issue.
It doesn't work...
Ok, after 4hrs of insanity trying to figure out what suddently went wrong with my vibrant. I came to a conclusion that it's not my phone because when I added my wife's GMAIL account, the force close did not come up and all the conversations were loaded without any issues.
Apparently, the server where my GMAIL account is located seems to have some problems since I keep getting sync errors with contacts and calendar as well.
Have you tried logging into your account from an actual computer? Perhaps there is a problem with your account. I know I had weird sync errors when my account got compromised by a spammer last month, and google locked my account until I changed the password.

The weirdest thing is when I used my PC I didn't encounter any issues... That's why I thought the problem came from the phone @ the beginning.
Since this morning everything seems got back to normal. All the conversations loaded no problem.

I'm getting this now, too. My first two screens of gmail are shown but if I scroll down to where it says "Loading conversations" the after a few seconds the error pops up. I wonder if there is a "bad"email in our inbox that the gmail app doesn't know how to handle - something along three lines of unexpected characters in the email header/subject/etc or some partis badly formatted or too long like the header or something in it. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will try archiving my old messages on gmail and see if that makes the error go away. If it does then it a pretty good bet that one of the emails is causing three problem (the app still shouldn't crash but it would at least help explain what is happening).

Well I was able to avoid the error by archiving or deleting old emails in the inbox. I noticed when you have a large volume in one single label it causes the crash while loading conversations. I do not think it comes from a "bad" email, it's just a glitch in the app itself that folks @ Google need to work on.
Another thing that I noticed is when I logged-in my email using Nexus One, the force close did not occur but there was a failed connection-try again message.
Same problem here, noticed it today... good to know im not alone heh, but like the OP said im pretty sure it is a glitch in the app, so we'll maybe have to wait for a fix.
Confirmed, only by trying to scroll down really fast (and I'm on wifi). This was not an issue on my g1, of course I was using custom rom's. It'll certainly be addressed.
I have not encountered this problem with the Gmail app yet but I have had the exact same issue come up with the Messaging app twice so far.
But the problem has not stopped me from using the Messaging app and I was able to go right back into it each time it happened. It happened once about 30 minutes ago, and another time over a week ago.
I think it may have to do with the 200 text limit that I have turned off. Since Inbox is at 173 right now with Outbox 89, last deleted a few days ago and also with 33 conversations.
It does get a little laggy too but I have noticed it lag with only a few conversations with maybe an overall total of 30 text messages. I never had it lag this much on the G1 and I would have over 1000+ text messages and with cyanogenmod.
I am having the same issue.
I am getting the same thing too.
Mine started late last week after I updated the Facebook app. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling (highly doubt it was related, but due to coincidence I had to try it) and it was doing the same thing.
I did a factory wipe - same thing. I ran fix permissions and rebooted - same thing.
I am not sure it is related to having too many items in one label as I have just shy of 300 items in my inbox, and I have had about the same (give or take 2-3) for months (I use many, many labels to manage things), but I am going to try to organize, move, delete, archive, etc. some of my messages and see what happens.
Google knows of the issue.

Thanks for the link. I haven't had time to search today while I've been at work.
FYI, it looks like this may have been fixed. Mine has stopped doing it this morning. Checking the issue link that laris posted, nothing confirmed from Google that it is fixed yet though. Couple of people reporting that theirs is fixed too.

[Q] Loss of Push Notifications in 4.2.2

Hi. I’m having a problem with my Nexus 7 fetching notifications, and I’m hoping someone might be able to solve the issue... without having to do a reinstall. I may have inadvertently caused the issue myself, but have no idea how and don’t know how to fix it.
To give you some background, I was using my N7 rooted with stock ROM all through 4.2.1, and life was fine. My problems arose when 4.2.2 was released OTA. For some odd reason, the update would download, the tablet would tell me so, but when I would try to install it, the bootloader would lock up in an error. Rebooting and going into settings to force a search for the update would return an “up to date” message even though I was still on 4.2.1. 2-3 days later, the icon would return to tell me that the update was downloaded, but attempting to install would only result in an error.
I finally decided to unroot and relock the device to install the update. Directly after, I rerooted it. Of course, one of the main reasons I keep root is to use a backup service, and I ran Titanium to reload my apps and settings. A while after, I noticed that my phone would ring to notify me of incoming texts, Facebook updates, emails and such, but my tab, which I often looked forward to mildly annoying me with an echoing chime, would not. Once I log in to an app, it will then suddenly deliver me whatever notifications have been awaiting, but that kind of defeats the purpose. I’ve also noticed that the WiFi icon, which was normally blue 95% of the time is not consistently gray. It NEVER turns blue any more. I’m not quite sure what that means, but I’m almost certain it is somehow related.
In doing some research to fix the problem, I discovered an app that adjusts how often it pings for notifications. I was hoping that, somewhere in the midst of the update and my reinstalling old data, I’d deleted or overwritten this “Heartbeat”, and that the app would fix it, but it sadly has not.
Anyone have any idea what I’ve done and how to solve this problem?

Might be a problem with your account configured on the Nexus. I had a similar problem when I was playing around with framework-res.apk One time I didn't put the right signature and so my account was only 'half' stable, I.e. the account was there, but no syncing. I found out when starting the play store, there I was asked for my account ...
After inserting and reconfiguring mail / calendar / ... everything works fine now.

I tried deleting the data from the Google Play Store and Google Play Services apps. Had done the same with Google Voice earlier. Nothing changed. What do I need to do to "put the right signature"?

I stopped receiving email notifications!

Sometime within the last week, I noticed that I stopped receiving email notifications on my phone. I can still retrieve email manually (both through Inbox and the Gmail app), but unless I open the app it won't refresh. I've tried messing with the notification settings - none of which were turned off or disabled - and I've even removed and re-added my Google accounts. No effect!
I'm not sure what else I should be trying, or why this would even be occurring. I haven't noticed any other apps giving me the same issues; for instance, Facebook and my Twitter client (Fenix) both continue to push notifications just fine. Any advice on what I could try next? Thanks in advance!
Have you wiped data of Google play services by any chance? That will cause this every time without fail.
It should sort itself out eventually, I found a good article describing what happens when Google play services data is wiped and it causes mayhem with syncing your Google account.

I know I have before, but I don't think it was recently. That's really good to know now! I'm contemplating just doing a full wipe because all these tiny problems are starting to get at me. Removing your Google account plays havoc with apps now.
I used to have this same issue when I used Inbox on my last device and never really came across any fix while searching for answers. Never had it happen with Gmail, so that's odd you're having that same issue. Only thing I can recommend is trying another email app. I use BlueMail now and have no issues with not getting notifications.
With app issues, specially with Google Apps, I recommend rebooting to Safe Mode and testing the app.
1. Hold Power Button until Power Off shows.
2. Hold Power Off until "Reboot to Safe Mode" appears.
3. Click "Reboot to Safe Mode".
4. See if the issue persists.
Check the sync
Also, check if you jave restricted the background data at the data usage
I checked everything you guys recommended, nothing seemed to help. In a rage I factory reset the phone, and everything is peachy now. Instant emails galore. No idea what that implicates as the cause.
