So... stock?

The rom doesn't really matter, its the kernel that makes a speed difference. Browse thru the kernels in android development section

I read about pure speed x rom ( psx ) but i wanted to know if there's a better rom

All things come at a cost, so desiring both insane speed and insane battery life might not be possible... But, if you're looking for a lot of speed and decent battery life, here's what I've done:
1. Download and nstall the most recent 'codefireXperiment nightlies', which you can find here: http://downloads.codefi.re/synergy/codefireXperiment-Mako/nightlies/mr2. (Y'know the whole shebang, GAPPS are to be downloaded/installed as well)
2. Download and install the latest Faux123 kernel for JSS. Look at his first post for battery saving settings that you can use with Trickster Mod.
3. Download and install an app called Greenify from the Play Store + download and install either FauxClock or Trickster Mod from the Play Store.
4. Profit

as suggested above : update your kernel indeed.
Did you upgrade to JRW66Y first ?
Be carefull to choose the right kernel version : JWR, not JSS ones.

I'd suggest you to use Paranoid Android's latest build with AK kernel and Nova launcher.
Set CPU governor to interactive and GPU to ondemand. You will have very decent battery life and great preformance.

[Q] Advice for a ROM

Hi guys...
I have a N7 16Gb from october and I think thare's not a real reason to change the rom on this device...except the tablet ui and the general fun to make it!
Well...
I'm not here to ask you guide etc. but an advice.
What custom rom do you advice? many talk about Paranoidandroid but I try it on an old Galaxy Scl and it was pretty horrible and unstable...but on nexus seems the rom most supportend and with much more feature...
Or I'm attracted by the Dirk AOKP that seem pretty good....
Beside this....it's difficult also the kernel decision...
Franco Kernel? or M3 or Trinity? I'm not interested in overclock...
thanks to all in advance
no one?
No one is answering because there are a ton of these threads asked all the time. There is no best Rom or Kernel. Try searching and see what features you like or what sounds interesting and then just install it and see for yourself.
I personally like the Omega 3 kernel, OC is optional and it has just about every scheduler/governor you could possibly want. Performance and battery life are pretty much on par with the other top kernels. I haven't tried any ROMS mainly because the 2 I flashed ended up boolt-looping. So I am using the stock with some pretty major tweaks. I am a DEV on other sites and once I jump through the hoops to be able to post in developer forums I will be posting my own ROM. OC is for people who don't know how to optimize. *cough*

Modaco custom ROM (currently version Jr13) is light, mostly stock, extra features that help me are- prerooted, enhanced power menu, tweaked youtube app for video preload, enhanced quick settings panel, comes with gapps etc.
Modaco cyanogenmod custom ROM (currently version r4) consumes more processing power, based on CM 10.1 so has all its features, prerooted, more enhanced power menu(with screenshot and extended desktop options), tweaked youtube, enhanced quick settings(devoid of vol control), comes with gapps, comes with cyanogenmod file manager etc.
MCR Jr13 and MCMCR r3 are interchangeable with dirty flash so I get to retain all my apps.
M-kernel (currently a33 version) gives me ample undervolting option (lp, cpu, gpu, ram), and I can set minimum brightness with rootdim, so I can extend my battery life.

Don't know why people make thread to ask others what's best rom, kernel... Answers will be different from users and depends what they prefers, so it'll be difficult to make a choice because every answers won't be the same. What I did when i wanted to choose was reading threads and try by myself to see what I liked. Sorry if my answer will not help you to choose but it's the best i can advise you. Hoping you find what best suits you.
Phone: GT-I9100P
Kernel: Dorimanx
ROM: 4.2.1 Vanilla RootBox
Tablet: Nexus 7
Kernel: M-Kernel
ROM: 4.2.1 AOKP PUB
MOD: JusTunBean
Xenon
Im usin Xenon HD its a 4.2 rom (aokp base) and it's very customizable for your likes. You should give it a try.:cyclops:
If you are doing any ROM other than stock, I suggest AOKP for sure. It has a ton of mods for your ui and allows a lot of customizing. Make sure you get 4.1.2 milestone version and get your gapps as well or you won't have necessary files. Hope this helps look in the aokp official thread for download

thanks to all...
all advices are really usefull to understand the mod world...
I was intent to install an AOKP rom, but I don't really understand the difference...
I would like to try the the paranoid but i think is AOSP...
for AOKP I don't know what rom to try...I see the Dirty AOKP but I'm not sure....
There's also one called smooth ROM check it out, you should search YouTube to see if you like it. personally I'm back to the to the 4.1.2 stock rom because on aokp it wasn't allowing me to install some APK's from the play store that i really wanted. it said they werent compatible with my device when I knew they were compatible with n7.. I wish there was a way around that but nobody on here would tell me if there was or not when i posted a thread asking... anyways hope you find what you are looking for and I do suggest checking YouTube first for custom Roms for nexus 7 before flashing over hella different ones it would take less time, peace and good luck!

[Q] Custom Kernel and updates

Heya, everybody.
I'd like to know if you guys could recommend a good kernel for undervolting and overclocking the Nexus 7. (I'm only looking into very mild overclocking, I don't want worse battery life)
But here's the main thing: I'm wondering about how you'd best go about updating your tablet after flashing a custom kernel. Will I be able to take OTA updates? Am I forced to flash new ROMs every update?
I'd just like the most simple way of updating my OS while being able to overclock and undervolt my Nexus 7. (OTA updates would be the most simple, right? If possible ofc)
I've got a Nexus 7 32GB. Android 4.2.1, IC 3568A-ME370T, Model ME370T, Build JOP40D
there aren't many kernels so quick search through android/original sections 1st pages you can find information about everything you need. i would suggest m-kernel or omega most stable (on my device) and with features you seek, although OC is kinda pointless IMHO if you are not going to benchmark it and given how scores/real world perfomance show well...it's pointless
i think you can't easily just update rom and keep kernel, but it's not much work, download newer version of the rom flash it, flash kernel, boot and resume... 5mins tops.

Well, even if I'm only getting a 5% increase in performance or battery life I still consider it worth it. It's a rather simple upgrade that will last for years (I plan on taking good care of my device )

Wait, so you can update Kernel and ROM separately?
Am I correct in assuming that most ROMs (including stock) come with a Kernel that will replace whatever Kernel I have?
I am using trinity kernel alpha 4 version along with cm 10.1 ROM. Can over clock to 1.7 GHz with this kernel. Downloaded trinity tool box also. You can under clock, over clock and set voltages along with some kernel tweaks. Has worked flawlessly so far. I also downloaded and installed cyan delta app. It will flash the delta file of each nightly you want and also flash kernel all in one shot. (Cyan Delta will only work with CyanogenMod ROMs.)

I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889571
I'll probably use Franco if possible, cuz amazing battery life. I noticed that my Nexus 7 only lasts like 5hours when gaming with it(stock clocks). That's not good enough for me! :S
If it doesn't work I'll probably go for Omega or M-Kernel. (or AOKP stock kernel)
I'll probably go for Paranoid Android 3.0 with the Franco kernel. I've read that they're compatible.
Updating to newer versions might be a bit of a pain, but the cool functions are probably worth it :3
You don't need to update every time a new version of a ROM or Kernel comes out, you know. If it's setup and working perfectly, the best thing to do would be to enjoy your tablet.
OTA updates do a lot of validation checks before they begin; in fact, they perform a checksum on every file targeted for a patch update.
It is quite common (not always, but common) for the kernel or ramdisk to be modified during an OTA update - so this means a high likelihood that an OTA update will not succeed on a device with a custom kernel.
There are lots of ways to do what you want, though; two basic strategies would be:
- From a backup, restore only the (stock) boot partition. Apply the OTA, and then restore a backup of your OC kernel/boot partition.
- Using Titanium Backup (or Carbon), back up your apps & data. Restore a pure stock backup, and take the OTA update on that. Make a Nandroid Backup of this. Flash the replacement kernel & a root kit. Boot and restore your apps. (This method is more labor intensive).
Note the frequent mention of full (nandroid) backups in the above. Backups are a good thing to have; make them early and often.
Anyway, there you go - two methods for the price of zero.
I prefer PA3.0 & Motley Kernel

I use PA3.0 with Motley Kernel and it works like a champ. There are stretches where I get 2-3 days of battery life (but I am paranoid and have everything disabled when I don't use it, and brightness down to ~15%). The link you provided though is a good resource.

Well don't expect major improvement in battery life while gaming, maybe if you down clock CPU for less demanding games, if you run demanding 3d games like Horn you will drain battery fast. Kernels change from version to version, performance and battery wise, so try different versions from same Dev. When it comes to games the way tegra 3 is designed you will not see much of benefit if any from oc cpu. Just look at the latest m36 kernel, your n7 will basically become dual core device with immeasurable performance loss. All I want to say don't expect wonders. If you are after battery life I would suggest you to look into other less bloated ROMs, like code fire, dirtybox, rasbean jelly. Paranoid is great in some aspects but I found less popular roms are easier on the battery, but not by a large margin.

I would have to agree. You do not have to update your rom with every nightly or your kernel with every version. If your tab is working fine, use it for what you got it for. Sorta like Murphy's law. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Read the changelogs)

Yea, I won't be reflashing things unless there's new features that I really want.

Motley is apparently one of the "worst" kernels when it comes to optimization and battery life. The best thing about it is probably the features, but I don't really need any of them, so I probably won't be using that one

Yea, that seems to be the case from what I've read. But flashing the stock kernel would make it work fine, right?

This method is actually not that "labor intensive". As long as you've got Ti Backup Pro it's very easy to do this, you just gotta wait a while things backup/restore.

Yea, I realize now that battery life when gaming probably won't change much.
Battery life is very important to me, but if it comes at the expense of features then the difference has to be noticeable.
How has your experience been? (compare the ROMs you've used)

[Q] ParanoidAndroid + Franco Kernel

Just wondering how the battery life and performance is with this set-up. If you feel a different kernel gets better battery life or performance with ParanoidAndroid, please let me know. Any comments and suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
PA + Franco is excellent.
PA + Trinity is also excellent.
Both are great kernels that deliver great performance and long battery life.

I've tried all the kernels. I'm on the latest PA as well. Motley's was the best for me I regularly get over 4 hours on screen and 12-20 hours total time. I'm a pretty heavy user, I use like at least 1gb a week. The key is to always have your screen brightness at an optimum level and make sure there's no stupid syncing stuff like facebook. I only sync gmail, contacts, and calendar for 3 gmail accounts. I have "faster" binned CPU if that helps at all. I use trickstermod with a -75mV UV. Diff phones react to kernels diff. Try all of them to see which is the best for you. Most of the other kernels gave me similar battery life to stock which was about 3ish hours on screen and 12 or so hours total time and some didn't respond to UV well. Good luck with your journey :good:

hey sorry guys for bothering but im a noob at roms. i just installed PA but cant figure out how to install franco kernel as well. its an .img file but clockwork mod wont let me use that file. thanks
...Personally after just switching to franco kernel with PA from the stock mako kernel I've had a pretty shi**y experience. Today my phone lasted only 10 hours with 50 mins screen time... wtf?? I'll definitely be moving on thankyou. I have a fast binned CPU and I do run alot of auto syncing apps.. however on the mako kernel all things equal i could easily get 2-3hours screen time and 18-20 hours of battery on time

it depends... always depends
You can try either of these, and then you can check, on your mobile, which is better :
ak's kernel
Hells Doctor with Tardis
Hells Core
In my point of view(and for my mobile setup), the better is Ak, but all of them are great kernels though !
Can't seem to get a download link for 4.4.2 kernel. The one on the official post isn't working. Any luck?
There is no such thing as a best kernel Just head over to the dev sections, try a few and then decide for yourself, as everyone has their own needs/likes/...
