When the Nexus 7 is plugged in there is a persistent notification that indicates "CONNECT AS / Media Device (MTP)". In this state adb devices will not show the Nexus. Not exactly obvious why, but I you select the second option "Camera (PTP)" the device is available for debugging. This choice is persistent, and I'm guessing that with a band new device it will connect as MTP until told otherwise

Basically, This is my problem. I need to change my Nexus usb configuration from MTP to PTP so that it'll show up on adb devices, but unfortunately I'm softbricked; I cannot get my Nexus to do anything because I can't get it pass the googlescreen.
So my question is; is there anyway to change it from MTP to PTP without having the option to enable it via the tablet?
Bump, can I configure usb through the nexus toolkit? Please help.
What do you mean?
EDIT: Saw the OP now. If you can get into bootloader mode, try flashing a factory image. If that's not the answer you were looking for, please specify your requirements and why you need them.
I don't know what you mean, and I don't understand why you recommended flashing a factory image but I'll try to elaborate.
At the moment, my Tablet doesn't allow for USB Debugging.
It is Soft Bricked, so I can't get into system to enable USB Debugging, as I have accidentally deleted my OS.
I cannot disable MTP either because I cannot access my tablet setting.
WHAT I NEED:
An alternative to accessing these such settings.
To activate usb debug you have to go in "developer options".
To repair "softbrick" you have to flash factory image in "adb sideload" or adb in linux or windows pc.
Yeah since you dleted the OS itself, your only optioons are to either flash a ROM from recovery or flash the factory image.

Not necessarily correct, since it depends on having a working custom recovery that can start an ADB instance. Fastboot flashing is much more reliable.
You DO NOT need USB debugging in recovery or fastboot modes.
USB debugging ONLY applies to a booted OS.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Stop trying to use ADB, use FASTBOOT. There is a sticky at the top of the forum How to flash a factory image using fastboot/return to stock. It has all the information you need to return to a working device. ADB is only useful if you have a working OS, which currently you do not.

ok, trying to follow the instructions to sideload the OTA update to kitkat here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-nexus-tablet-kitkat
However, I am running into a problem with the recovery mode. it isn't seen by my PC. So adb cannot find my device to let me sideload the OTA.
adb sees my tablet when it is running normally, though. I was able to reboot into recovery using adb. It just lost the connection as soon as I was rebooted in recovery.
Does anyone know how to make windows see my tablet while it is in recovery mode?
Thanks,

You need to pull up the recovery menu by clicking the power button and then clicking the volume up button and then letting go of both of them. then click the button that says something along the lines of sideloading an update via adb and then you're set to send the adb command. Be wary, however, I seemed to somehow brick my N10 earlier by doing this. I finally got it up and running (by what I'm calling luck) but it wasn't a fun hour.

I can get to recovery, no problem there. I can select the option to sideload via adb. the problem is in Windows. Once my tablet is in recovery, the tablet is no longer seen by Windows, so the adb sideload command fails because it doesn't see the tablet is connected anymore,

I've heard that unplugging the device from the PC until you're in recovery mode might help. I would also suggest, if that doesn't work, to install the ADB drivers again once you're in recovery mode.
Go to device manager and you will probably see "Nexus 10" listed with no drivers installed.
Right click it an select properties, then Driver. Click Update Driver.
Select the browse option, then let me pick option, then click "Have Disk" and point it to the folder sdk\extras\google\usb_driver from the Android SDK you installed.
Then select the Android ADB driver.

When it is running, and usb debugging is enabled, it shows up under Android Phone as Android Composite ADB Interface.
I turn USB debugging off, and it shows up under Portable Devices as Nexus 10
I boot into the bootloader and it shows under Android Phone as Android Bootloader Interface.
but It doesn't show at all when I am in recovery
How are you connecting your N10 to your Windows machine? Are you using good USB cable? Are you using USB2 or USB3 port? Is the port attached to mobo directly, or is it on the case?
Some claim there can be issues with poor USB cables, using USB3 instead of USB2, or using port not directly on the mobo, so if you're doing any of those, I'd suggest trying a switch.
Also, I'm confused, has USB debugging on or off when you go into Recovery?

I am connecting with a USB cable. I don't know if it is "good' or not, but it works with the tablet in all other modes. I was able to use adb to transfer files, reboot, etc. I was able to use fastboot to flash Chainfire's autoroot, and to flash the factory images.
I was using a USB2 port directly on my laptop, but I just tried the USB3 port and it didn't change anything.
Plugging it into my USB hub, and my hub did not detect that it was plugged in either while it was in recovery mode. It was detected when I rebooted back into the system.
USB debugging is on when I enter recovery. I used "adb reboot recovery" to reboot my tablet into the recovery mode

howdy y'all,
so im trying to help out my buddy. he currently has no os installed as well, but can boot to bootloader and twrp recovery 2.5. no idea how he has that but I figure I could just mount some zip files and be on my way. Currently whenever we try to do anything in twrp(ie wipe/mount) it is just hung up on unable to mount /radio even when all I have checked is system. I can't use adb or fastboot as far as I'm aware of; I've tried to use the unified android toolkit from skipsoft but its no dice since I was never able to turn on debug mode to begin with? So yeah any help would be much appreciated
oh and I know its not my cable or usb ports since the tablet can still charge.
Also this is the 2012 N7
Hi,
You'll need to get adb and fastboot working, best approach is to wipe and flash factory images through fastboot but may also need to use adb for e2fsck
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277112
See this on getting fastboot working, best of luck!

I don't understand how I'm supposed to get fastboot working since I was never able to enable debug mode on the device in the past let alone now that it has nothing installed. And from what I can understand from the instructions I need the drivers to be installed after I plug in while under debug mode for the sdk to work.
I attempted to install the nexus 7 driver from here: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=Nexus+7&os=32
However it looks like I already have the files on my computer from a previous attempt with Skipsoft's Android toolkit?
Because of this I'm unsure of how to move forward with this fastboot business.
fastboot doesn't need debugging on or an os installed, just a functional bootloader
You will probably need to manually update the drivers yo the proper ones
I see, how do I go about manually installing this driver then? I'm assuming I need to go through some sort of windows device tree? Or can I just extract a file somewhere?
You can download usbdview (just search Google for a free download) to see what driver is selected when you plug in your tab easily
Or you will need to go into device manager and select to manually update the drivers, don't allow windows to select but manually choose it
There are loads of instructional videos on YouTube for you if needed
I know this is a super late response, but I never managed to get around to trying to find out how to do a manual install. Just tried today using the Nexus Root Toolkit v.1.9.9. I still can't figure out how to manual install the driver because my issue is that windows doesn't recognize anything is plugged in, and all of these guides do state that I should have had usbdebugging checked. I can't seem to find a specific guide that correlates to setting fastboot up exclusively like you mentioned.
Also, using usbdeview like you said I could see that I have installed a google nexus adb interface, a google galaxy nexus adb interface, as well as the mtp usb driver.
Sorry for all the handholding, but this really is an issue that I've never have encountered and I can't seem to manage.
Hey again
There is a fastboot guide in the first post I linked you to
If you can't get fastboot to recognize device in bootloader mode it is possible the USB port is broken, but more likely an issue with drivers, cord or PC
So try a new USB cable, or a different PC
Try try again with drivers, uninstall and reinstall
Unfortunately this type of trouble shooting is hard to do without device in hand
Hi all,
I greatly need your help or some advice. I searched for more than 6h yesterday and Im surprised I couldnt find a solution to my problem.
Typical stuff : I broke the screen of my Nexus 4, that is completely stock 5.0.1. The phone is unrooted, bootloader is locked and obviously USB Debugging is disabled.
I need to backup some data from my phone : pictures, notes and if possible my contacts.
When I connect my phone via USB to my PC, I cant browse my files since my screen is locked. My screen is not responding at all, so no way I can unlock it. Only thing I can do is install new applications on my phone, but no way to launch them since I'd need to unlock my screen again.
I have installed adb and fastboot in order to try and use Android Screen Control, but I dont have USB Debugging enabled.
So I read that I could sideload a kernel that has USB Debugging enabled by default.
I got into Recovery Mode, and tried sideloading a zip file containing a Kernel found on the forum, but I always get an error saying the footer is wrong and the signature of the file didnt pass verification. I guess I can only sideload OTA updates ?
I tried fastbooting CWM recovery, that also didnt work.
adb devices command lists my 'recovery' device.
At this stage, all I need is to either be able to unlock my phone so I can access my files via USB (i tried few apps without success), or to enable USB debugging so I can connection using sideload, use Android Screen Control, reset the pattern lock, and backup my phone.
Also, USB OTG isnt enabled by default on Nexus 4, so that's another dead-end
So what are my options ? Where could I find a kernel that has USB Debug enabled, and how can I sideload it considering phone is not rooted, and bootloader is locked (unlocking it and whipping data defies the purpose).
THANK YOU for any advice!
There is nothing you can do with a locked bootloader and no custom recovery. Sorry man, but you're not going to be able to access your data.

I've exactly the same problem, but my bootloader is unlocked and I'm rooted.
I'm also on a Nexus 4 with 5.0.1 and I'm trying to get control over my device from my Windows PC. But I don't know which kernel to use and how (yet) to enable USB debugging.
Help is appreciated.

All you need is a custom recovery to boot into to access your files. If you don't have one, download the latest version of twrp from here. http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/mako
Then flash that using fastboot. If you need help let us know.

Hmm, "error: cannot load 'open recovery-twrp-2.3.2.3-mako'.
Sure usb-debugging doesn't have to be enabled?

Yes, you're so right! I also missed .img in the command
But what kernel would you recommend me to use so I have usb-debugging I can have usb-debugging enabled?
I am in almost completely the same situation! My N4 fell yesterday and shattered at the bottom right hand corner. No the touch screen doesn't work and there are sections of the screen that are black. However, I have...
root
cwm recovery
stock 5.0.1 kernel
windows 7
adb not working
fastboot working
usb debugging disabled
a need for usb debugging to become enabled.
I would like a kernel with usb debugging enabled and instructions on how to install it. Or if you have another fix, instructions on that.
After following info on XDA and everything I could find elsewhere on the web to no avail, ADB still showed "error; device offline" . I believe I must install new rom in order to start over with computer/device recognition. After "Revoke USB Authorizations" in Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging, believe that is a permanent revocation until computer is presented with a new system.img, (rom). But I am just noob, please correct me if I'm wrong. So if I'm correct I guess I'll Have to do Factory Reset, lose root, and go through the whole process again

When you "Revoke USB Authorizations" it just clears the current saved devices. Try this, unplug device, use a USB port on back of the computer (sometimes it matters), make sure Developer Options is enabled, USB Debugging enabled, Verify apps via USB unchecked, revoke USB authorizations, then start ADB, plug phone in and wait for it to be recognized by windows, then enter the command "adb devices". The phone should ask if you want to authorize this PC.
If that fails, try a different cable.

Hey Guys,
i tried to Root my Moto E4 but Unfortunally i cant get Fastboot to work under Windows 10 Home 64 Bit on Both my Notebook and my PC. I installed The Motorola Device Manager (Since it comes with drivers) and installed ADB and Fastboot but once i Reboot into Fastboot Mode it wont Recognize it for flashing. The CMD Just Says Waiting for Device. I have expierience with Rooting other Phones but i never had this much Trouble getting Fastboot to work properly. Would be awesome if u could show me a Solution to this since i really want a Custom Rom.

There's no trick, it just works. I have Windows 10 64 bit as well and no issues. Maybe you need to update your platform tools (adb and fastboot). Using old ones can be a problem.
What command are you issuing? Just fastboot devices ?
Make sure you're not using a USB 3.0 port on your computer.

Few other thoughts:
- try a different cable; a cable that works for charging and adb communication may not work with fastboot
- avoid external hubs if possible
- be sure to reboot both devices after switching drivers if communication isn't immediately established

When you say you booted to fastboot what do you mean ?
Did use adb and your phone was recognized and then you issued adb command or what method are you using ....
You need to ensure you establish USB debugging connection first & grant authorization ...once link with authorization has been established run adb ...from adb check if recognized run command to boot to fastboot
So start from the top && go down
ARE YOU CERTAIN YOU USED CORRECT METHOD TO TURN OFF DRIVER VERIFICATION ON WINDOWS 10 && YOUR DRIVER ACTUALLY INSTALLED
Last noteworthy point ... when unlocking my motoE4 I had to boot to bootloader ONLY to use fastboot NOT "FASTBOOT"
Hold power + volume button

When you authorize your adb connection do you tick or select always allow connections from this device ...the fact that your device is listed as *unauthorised* is a clear indication in your previous attempts you didn't authorize to "allways allow connections" from this device
#result _when you reboot authorization is revoked
Enter bootloader mode the old skool way using your buttons..
# MAKE SURE TO SELECT "ALLOW OEM UNLOCK OPTION IN DEVELOPS settings

3.plug in usb
4.run fastboot devices to force fastboot to start deamon ...
5.once fastboot can see your device run oem unlock
6.DO NOT USE USB 3 port so try different USB ports on pc
7. Alternatively use a live USB of Ubuntu minimal to do the job
--- doesn't seem like driver problem if adb can see your device
See if that works

Why select meta mode ? When you are in bootloader you use your volume keys to navigate between meta, recovery& factory reset & meta and you use your power key to select different modes ...what do you want to do in meta mode ?
When you are in bootloader you are essentially in fastboot mode too so it isn't necessary to choose any of the other options unless you are trying to get into recovery which is pointless if you haven't flashed custom recovery yet ..
I Succeded. I Booted into Bootloader with ADB and took a look at Device Manager to install the Driver Properly.

No it doesn't. That's an error in magisk manager when you hide the manager app itself. Just use a different safetynet checker app if you want to check safetynet.
