[Q] CWM, I lost 5 Gig - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
I was going to install a new ROM with CWM (6.0.3.6) when I got this error message "Cant mount external_SD".
Since my zip file was on my SDCARD, I had to restore my just made backup so I could move the .zip file (the ROM) on the internal memory.
The only things I made at that time were a backup and a "wipe + factory reset".
So I restore my backup and reboot and first thing I see is the lost 5 Gig of space on my internal memory and of course, I cant find the files/directory of what ever take all that space.
Any idea ?
Thanks.

Check how much space your cwm backups are taking. Each one probably runs about 1.5 GB. It's not the 5 you're seeing but a big chunk of it.

only made 1 backup, but Ill check anyway

the stock TW ROM is, uh, not small when backed up with CWM. like 2.5-3.5 gb big.

Restoring NANDROID Backups

Hello HD2 users,
This may seem like very basic information but got me confused so i want to share it with you. Its about restoring nandroid backups.
The Experiece:
I had the typhoon rom working very well. Its fast and smooth and i like it alot. Anyways, being a flash junkie and wanting to try out different roms all the time i wanted to try a sense 3.5 rom. It required a greater internal memory partition 200 or 245mb. I currently had 150mb.
So anyways, i made a nandroid backup in CWM and then flashed a new partition size, flashed the new sense rom and it was working. I didnt like it. I wanted the typhoon rom back. I booted into CWM and restored the backup. BUT it didnt work. The backup restored successfully but due to low internal memory, it didnt even go to the boot animation. Just stayed on the boot image.
The lesson:
To restore your nandroid backups and run them u need to restore them on the SAME partition size that you made them on.
If u made a backup with 200mb partition, the restored backup will ONLY WORK if your partition is still 200mb.
Just some basic info. Hope it helps people out
Peace

I would dispute that, and say that it is more likely that your increased system partition size resulted in the data partition being too small to restore fully.
Did you make sure you did a 'wipe data factory reset' before restoring? since leftovers on the sd card could be causing problems too.
did you try 'fix permissions'?
(Always happy to be proven wrong, of course, i'm no great mind when it comes to android, but i'm ((fairly) sure ive restored to larger partitions before)

Yes i did fix permissions and wipe data/cache and dalvik cache too.
When i was using the typhoon rom i had like 200something used internal memory. And some 37 left. Not exact figures. So roughly 240mb is available after the partition. When i increase the partition, less than 240 is available. Maybe thats the reason?. Im not too sure too. Lets wait for some expert guy

I am no "expert guy" but I have proved your theory wrong because I had a jelly bean Rom installed with a 150 mb partition and backed it up. Then this afternoon I remembered I needed a number from a text I received on that rom. I had since already repartitioned my phone to 250 mb and flashed a sense 3.5 Rom. I just restores my back up of jb made in a smaller partition and worked like a charm. Don't know the logistics behind it, just know it works

[Q] What can I safely delete?

According to SD card Analyst I have
Clockworkmod: 1.99GB
TWRP: 1.12GB
TBU: 383MB
As you can imagine, that is a BIG chunk out of my 6GB total!
I have flashed lots of ROMs in the last couple of weeks but I have now settled on one. AFAIK all I need to keep is the current bakup in TWRP in case anything happens.
I would be glad for some advice as to what I can safely delete. I don't want to make a mistake as my system is running brilliantly right now.
Many thanks for any help!

As you already said, you should keep the TWRP backup as a safety net... The dated folders in the Clockworkmod can be deleted if you don't need to use them any more. Just leave the main folder but delete the sub folders.
TBU backups are just your apps + data... if you don't need data restored (since you probably have them in your TWRP backup) you can delete the contents there as well.

I agree with cvcduty, but I just wondered if there was a reason you use both TWRP and Clockworkmod, especially on an 8GB N7 with limited space. I've always just used CWM, so I was curious

Well, to be honest the answer is a bit silly: I am not aware of having used CWM, I didn't even know I had it!
Can I uninstall it altogether? And if so, how?
In CWM, there is a folder called Blobs with 1.78GB worth of folders. Is it safe to delete it?
If you don't use cwm then yes you can delete it.
I removed mine aswell as I have a nandroid backup on my PC which I can adb push if worst comes

The clockworkmod APK
and
The clockworkmod RECOVERY
both use that same folder. Every time you flash a cyanogen Rom it had the apk installed by default. So that's where it's coming from.
In the folder back up the Nandroid folder or the one with data system recovery files (140-250mb) to your computer and then delete the whole dang folder if you do not use clockwork recovery.
As for titanium you can use the cloud storage feature and save another 500mb

Storage

Using SD maid if found where the heck all my storage was going. Under /storage/emulated the folders /legacy and /0 are exactly the same with all the same stuff in it. Is there 2 of everything in my internal SD? Can I delete one of these folders? I attached a screenshot
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
For giggles I deleted one. The folder was still there but empty and the other folder is also empty. I'm thinking they are the same just shown twice with different names. Not actually duplicate.

Hmm okay damn. Trying to figure out where this space is going because all I really have is a couple things in the downloads folder and thats it. Another screenshot of my storage in settings kinda further backs my idea

They are not duplicate files... The files are only stored in one location, but each folder has a "link" to them...
Sorta like your computer and creating "shortcuts"
That's all well and good, but...

...even Android's storage manager can't get it right:
Phone:
mako 16GB
rev_11
MAKOZ10o
M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.48
Secure Boot - enabled
Lock State - unlocked
Rooted with (an otherwise) stock ROM (4.2.2 OTA) and Clockwork Mod Touch 6.0.2.3.
I have found four places seeming to be my SD storage:
/sdcard
/storage/sdcard0
/storage/emulated/0
/storage/emulated/legacy
I've attached other screenshots showing how File Expert HD and DiskView treat my storage. CWM 6.0.2.3 also "misinterprets" my storage situation so I can't make more than 2 backups, and if I have 2 then I struggle for space for downloads and apps. I really wouldn't care about this if apps understood it - it makes you wonder how it managed to get released when not only do no apps support it, but Android's own system gets confused!
I've seen posts talk about merging all SD data with /data/media/0 but on my phone (using both File Expert and the new File Expert HD) that's showing up as a file not a folder. Seriously, how do I sort this out? Which is the real folder, why are the other three there, how do I disable this silly "shortcut" thing that's destroying my phone's storage?

Yeah, what originally alerted me to the space issue was when I went to make my second nandroid since installing the 4.2.2 OTA. I made one before and one after the update, then went to make a third in order to have a recent backup before trying to flash the Ubuntu Touch Dev preview but the nandroid failed due to insufficient storage space.

This should explain the "missing" storage. Since you made two nandroid backups and you have quite a lot of apps installed (2.89GB), this will take at least 6 GB of space.
Edit: Nandroid backups don't show on the android storage view.

At the time of taking the screenshots in my first post, I only have one nandroid in order to keep a decent amount of free space. The fact that CWM is also misinterpreting the storage makes me think it's backing up all 4 locations, which means that my nandroid is stupidly big. That coupled with all apps mistaking the 3 mirror locations as actual files results in a huge loss of potential storage space as apps think the device is full when it really isn't.
I should probably also mention that Windows reports the same free/used space numbers as File Expert HD.
All your internal data lies within /data/media/
The contents within that is usually what is visible to the user on a TW ROM. Once you switch to an AOSP ROM a second partition is created in /storage/emulated/0. This is your actual internal memory. Any previous downloads or backups made before installing an AOSP ROM will be located in /data/media/ since that was it's original directory. You can still view the "0" folder in /data/media/ but all your downloads, backups, etc, will be directed to /storage/emulated/0/ by default.

I don't understand what you mean by a "TW ROM" but I haven't changed ROM. I unlocked the bootloader and rooted, but other than a few quick plays with Ubuntu Touch I'm still using the stock ROM (which I return to from Ubuntu via restoring a CWM nandroid). I haven't flashed any Android ROMs at all.
I didn't have the phone long before I got the 4.2.2 OTA update and I didn't check the folder structure before then, but I didn't notice any suspiciously fast drops in free space until after said update.

Can you use a file explorer with root access and check how big is this folder? /data/media/clockworkmod/backup
File Expert and File Expert HD both see it as a file... What app should I use?

Install ES File Explorer, then follow the instructions on this post
Going to have to count up the folder size manually, will do it later and report back because I need to get ready for work now.

you know that the "Real" folders are in "mnt/shell/emulated"?^^
There you also see the clockworkmod folder and check it's size.

How do I move my CWM backup to a PC?

I made a backup in CWM. When I connect my N7 to a PC, I see every other folder except my backup folder. (I am showing hidden files/folders). Is it not possible to move CWM backups off of the N7?
Great now the backup isn't there and I have no space left. (Have the 8GB N7)

It is stored in /data/media/0/clockworkmod now. I think it ran out of room while backing up and didn't tell me. I couldn't find out what was eating up the space so I just had to wipe it.
You run out of space quickly with 8 GB. I've had an iPod touch 4g before I chose android. It was the 8 GB model. When ordering my nexus 7 I directly chose the 32 GB one..

So I have heard... Even after a fresh SlimBean install I still have 2.3GB eaten up by who knows what...
Koush is working on a version which enables you to store / restore the backup files directly on your PC.
Otherwise you can use backup tools like my A.R.T. which enables you to do the same either in recovery mode or while the system is running.

Nandroid location?

Just rebooted my phone (rooted s4 w/ twrp recovery, stock rom) and it said that my sd card failed (64 g samsung pro) and would I like to re-format. So I did.
Which obviously erased all data. That is where my nandroid backup WAS.
So, I did another nandroid on both the newly formatted sd card AND one on the internal memory. This obviously ate up alot of precious space on the phone.
Any advise or input would be welcome.
Will it just get deleted from the internal, when I flash a new rom?
Thanks

Only if you format data. ... I believe

As a precaution, I'd highly recommend backing up your nandroids to either your computer, or to the cloud (or both).
If you choose to backup to cloud, from my experience: box didn't work for me (because of the individual file size being too large - had to use copy or dropbox)
Edit: Oh, and the next time you have the same issue with phone recommending a reformat, try to unmount, and mount it again. (throw a reboot into the mix if that doesn't work) - it solved the "bad sd card" issue when I had it.
