I have a Samsung galaxy S4 and i want to switch to a near google experience (I just think the nexus won't do it for me right now)
So how is everybody coping with the moto X's dual core ? I mean does it feel sturdy or lagy ?
No lag at all.

The CPU really wouldn't generate lag, that's more the GPUs territory and the GPU is the same as the S4 and HTC One. There really isn't any lag.

Coping? Nothing to cope with. The Moto X is at least as fast if not faster than the S4. There is significantly less lag and it is as smooth as butter, which you can't really say about the S4. I ditched my S4 for the Moto X and couldn't be happier.
So how is it possibel that a dual core is operating this phone very well with no lag ? what's the point then from the quad cores and the ARM chip race between the other companies if Dual Cores are still in shape ?!
...Do games and apps perform well , operate and open without lag or without being slow with this dual core ?

One word- optimization.
Games perform better seeing as though it's the same GPU but with significantly less pixels to push. Everything else is as fast as can be. Motorola really did an amazing job with this phone and has effectively rendered the whole spec war obsolete.

Well it's the same thing with desktop a huge multicore race then you realize all of 1% of your apps actually benefit from it and on android there's even less multitasking happening. A lot of companies want the numbers despite the fact that they don't really change anything.

Yeah I think that the Moto X's quadcore GPU may the factor, that and Google's software expertise hence Motorola has never been a real software company. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the X8 chipset have a quad core gpu while most other phones are single core gpus
Yes it's dual core. It's two krait 300 cores essentially a dual core snapdragon 600. The quad core devices rarely call on the other cores. As others have said moto optimized the hell out of the software.

Yes. exactly.
I've said on more than one occasion that this is Android's iPhone.
Very good hardware meets very good software.
But i still think dual core certainly has its limitations. IF you want to have a good 13 mega pixel camera with sensors and image stabilization chips , recording 4k videos, heavy gaming and whatever the heck they are going to invent in the future !
Quad Cores are there just for elimination of any limitations for the innovative side of the smartphones makers. But i hope they still optimize software to hardware as motorola did !

Stop obsessing over the gd number of cores.
Here's a quote from that article (interview with a Moto engineer)
I'll start with the processor technology. For one, we are not using last year's Qualcomm processor. It's this year's processor. It is a dual-core processor, but the thing people have to understand is that in mobile devices, more CPUs don't necessarily mean better or faster devices. In fact, in most instances, no more than two CPUs are being used at any given time. In order to save power, the algorithms controlling the device are often trying to turn off CPUs.
In the stress tests we have conducted on competing devices, we launched 24 Web sites at once on the device, and none of the devices used more than two CPUs at once to do this. So more than 90 percent of the time, the additional "cores" on the CPUs are turned off, so even if you have a quad-core or an octa-core device, not all of that computing power is used at once.

If I didn't know the specs of either phone, I would say that the X had an octo-core and that my old Note 2 had a dual core. My X is that much faster and makes my Note 2 feel like a snail. My wife has the S4 and this thing runs circles. You will be very pleased with the performance of this phone. Like many people are saying, Motorola just make the spec war obsolete with this phone, it seriously kicks ass.
I am going to put it through some paces and see how it handles games that chug along on my older phones starting with Asphalt 8.

I don't think the Hummingbird is "significantly faster" than Snapdragon. Sammy has better GPU performance, which is what is mostly noticed. Both are clocked at 1GHz. I do believe Hummingbird performs slightly better than Snapdragon (can't recall why I have that belief, though), but when comparing strictly processor performance, it's minimal. The GPU is the big difference.

Oh no trust me, you and I agree. I'm not getting the S with dual core around the corner. I think it's a complete waste of money. The S has some advantages over the 1, but to me, they aren't worthwhile with dual core coming very, very soon.
I just wanted to point out that Hummingbird and Snapdragon are both 1GHz, and I don't think that Hummingbird is significantly faster than Snapdragon. GPU is a different story; we all know that has been HTC's achilles heel for some time now (go back to their WinMo days and the driver fiasco...).

It is hard to know until you have both GalaxyS/2.2 with NexusS/2.3 running side by side, as they have the same CPU/GPU combination and the only difference is the OS.
It could well be that 2.3 uses the GPU for something what 2.2 was doing with CPU alone. And this could turn out as the biggest difference.
I am sure that N1 GPU as such is plenty fast enough, as it is used by the most of the current WP7 phones. Nobody seems to be complaining about the "jerkiness" of the WP7 interface. It is actually a matter of the time and effort sank into UI and the underlying graphics drivers. As a consequence, it can also happen, that N1 graphics drivers get less optimized as the ones in NS. We will see.
Even if dual core “around the corner” I honestly don’t think we will see optimized software for at least 6 months.... Look at the desktop computing world.. It took nearly a year for dual core to make a difference back when it was intel core solo vs core duo (or amd64 vs X2)... The software just took a lil longer to catch up. Even now, its taking awhile for a quad core to be worth it over a dual core

actually the cpu on the snapdragon is faster for computational tasks thanks to its FPU. hummingbird is on par to much slower in terms of computations (its linpack is like 14 lol)
the gpu is what separates the hummingbird from the snapdragon which is why hummingbirds seem better due to its overall performance

Excellent post, Sir. I always had the impressions, for some reason, that Hummingbird was a touch better, but the GPU made it really excel. It's great to hear that Snapdragon is actually a bit better, but is in fact held back due to the GPU. This makes me reconsider my next purchase significantly. I was thinking of holding off on HTC, as they'll continue to use Qualcom. Perhaps I'll stick with HTC, depending on when they have a dual core available for AT&T frequencies.

In all reality, why in the world do we need a dual core processor on a cell phone?
Don't even say 3d gaming, because that's just ridiculous. The percentage of people that want to play call of duty on their cell phones is probably less than the amount of people who know what rooting is.
What's wrong with optimizing our current 1 and 1.2 ghz processors to give us optimized performance and throwing in decent GPU's?
Anything more than that is COMPLETELY unnecessary for a cell phone.
Where do you guys think the cellular industry is heading?

I would say you don't know the purpose of dual core processors. At this point in time their purpose would be to support all of the multitasking rather than making one program run better (since most programs at this point are not programmed to take advantage of multiple cores). With simultaneous programs running on separate cores you would avoid the slow down that you would experience if you were running them all on the same core. I would agree with focusing more on battery life to some extent though.

My year old snapdragon runs numerous programs together perfectly smooth with absolutely no hiccups or lag.
I'm willing to bet a stock phone with (as I stated in the OP) optimized 1 or 1.2 ghz processor and GPU, add in a decent amount of ram and you have absolutely everything you need.
The hardware isn't the problem with android, it's the software. For some reason people don't seem to notice that. There remedy is to add unnecessary power to our phones that will more than likely never be used...
If dual core is somehow supposed to increase battery life, then I can understand somewhat the reasoning behind them. But I don't understand how two processors will noticeably help battery life in real time.

Nice try, but the purpose is to make apps also run better. Apps can easily be patched to take advantage of multiple cores and enhance its performance and such.
Also, multiple cores allow for higher performance with a lower hit on battery life. That alone is enough of a purpose of multiple cores. Not to mention ability to stream full 1080p videos, etc, which will eventually be the norm. This is specially important when outputting to TVs and the like.

absolutely right, android sucks when it comes to graphics. No hardware acceleration. Perfect example of why a first gen iPhone can run circles around a evo with half the hardware power when it comes to rendering effects and graphics. These hardware specs are just SPECS anyways. That dual core Tegra LG android phone thats coming out still lags despite how powerful it is.
I agree with OP. if our phones had a faster single core, say 1.6~2.0gjz and a decent gpu I believe it would perform better and have better battery life vs a dual core 800~1000mhz with the same gpu, dual core is a gimmick, nothing more
Perhaps this is a case of build it and they (new uses) will come? Good points on both side.
No, 3D is a gimmick. Dualcore CPU's, until fully optimized - and even then - is not a gimmick.

eh, i wouldnt necessarily call it a gimmick, imagine a dual core android phone that did have hardware acceleration. The possibilities would be crazy!!
But yes I totally agree with you also, until the fix the inherent flaw in every android device, more powerful harware is just going to drain the battery faster, instead of just optimizing the OS. Which sounds easy in practice but when there are hundreds of android devices, its probably not an easy task. ( i could very well be wrong though)

I don't think I said exactly what I meant in the OP...
My main point is that android does not need dual core processors at this point. We are still a new OS and there are tons of bugs and things that should be ironed out in the software, etc.
I have no problem with dual core processors if some people feel they will offer better performance and battery life than a 3rd or 4th generation fully optimized 1.2 ghz processor with a beast gpu.
My concern is that android is moving too fast for its own good. The OS has a lot of potential, but if we're just trying to blaze past the competition we're missing out ON A LOT of things.
3d is hands down a gimmick. There is absolutely no justification for that. lol

A single core 2GHz CPU would probably be slower and suck up more juice than a dual core 1 GHz CPU.
I personally agree with the mentality of energy efficiency over power. I'm just not certain whether dual cores are better or worse in that regard. Two cores doing a few simple tasks would be more energy efficient than a similarly designed single core doing the same tasks, but firing both cores up at max performance would obviously not be. Right now, aside from gaming, I don't see any apps that would strain a dual core; so if provided with great software support from the kernel/OS, maybe multiple cores are the better option. I don't know, maybe someone more technical could shed some light.
Regardless though, software will evolve and become more complex and resource hungry. Maybe HD video editing (not complex just simple social network / personal stuff) and some other stuff I can't think of but will likely pop up. I definitely see much more value in having a powerful GPU, a big reason why I think the EVO ultimately falls short, but like I said, maybe big phones + big batteries (1900+ mAh) + small CPUs and components + multiple cores + and optimized software is the answer to the battery problems.

I still can't understand why everyone wants to upgrade processors so quickly. I am not talking about any device or processor in particular but in general. Like our pc's. How many pc's come with a decent amount of memory out of the box. That is usually one of the first things we must do to really enjoy it unless u spent the money on a high end gaming pc. Why don't they beef up the memory on these while they work on dual core stuff.
In no way am I saying I don't think I need a dual core. More is always better with that kind of stuff. I would definitely take a dual over a single core. Just wandering why memory always seems like it could use more. Phones and pc's

well they advertise the dual core CPU
Says it supports 12mp primary camera?
The next tegra is a quad core cpu, 12 core gpu. Its going to be a monster.

Holy Moly. 8 core GPU?
And the SGSII only has 4 core GPU?
The Atrix wins overall. No question about it.

Extra cores do not necessarily translate to win. Tegra is awesome, but has its limits, which are far more apparent than in the new Galaxy 2, which appears to be the most powerful Android phone to date.
YAY! 8 CORE GPU! what ever that means? lol
as far as i know. the SGS2 oxynes or whatever its called is more powerful than tegra 2.
not my much tho.
however Nvidia has an advantage of Tegra zone. games specific to take advantages of the Tegra 2.
and that alone is way better than playing the same game the nexus S plays well only smoother.
this makes Tegra 2 a better GPU imho hands down. but not the most powerful.

The Atrix hasn't even shown its true colours yet. Wait till Gingerbread is released. This will be the REAL test.
Only then will it be clear whether Atrix or SGS II is the better handset.

Its called Exynos, and NO, the reports out there peg the Tegra 2 to be better clock for clock.
Why do you think Samsung overclocked the Exynos to 1.2Ghz? To be competitive, because at 1Ghz it wasn't.
Samsung has won the Quadrant war for the moment, but lets see what the Tegra 2 overclocked to 1.2Ghz (unlock that bootloader damit!) and with AOS 2.3.3 can do. And the hardware war can't be won on just a SAMOLED+ screen thats still can't be viewed in direct sunlight, and is heavily pixelated at 4.3" & 800x480 resolution (I certainly prefer qHD).
The Geforce ULV GPU in the Tegra 2 SoC is based on the Nvidia Geforce 6 series GPU architecture from 2004.
Computer GPU's at the time where still using "pipelines" before introduction of "unified shaders" (those are easier to be called multi-core) with the release of the nvidia G80 GPU in late 2006.
Piplines architecture has dedicated instructions shaders (nvidia like to call them cores for marketing reasons and to piss off Intel!) for each of pixel and vertex processing tasks. A GPU of this kind can't help itself if the load was heavier at one side of those tasks.
Where in "unified shaders" architecture those shaders can morph to handle any instructions tasks based on the load.
So it's more correctly to say the nvidia GPU in the Atrix has 8 shaders, But and it's a big BUT.. 4 of them must be preserved for the pixel processing and the other 4 must be preserved for vertex processing.
I am interested in how the graphics compare to the iphone 4S in real life. Like, is it that noticable?
I know the iPhones have optimization and all but with the Mali 400MP will i notice much difference compared 2 the iPhone 4S graphics? Iv seen all the benchmarks and i know iphone 4s is up to 2x faster then Mali 400 but will it be noticable??
It's not really noticeable, but the iPhone 4S is the first phone to have a dual-core graphics chip (gpu) so it can handle any game thrown at it. In my opinion playing games on the S2 is much more enjoyable because of the bigger screen and because of Super Amoled Plus. However if your buying a smartphone for games... then something is wrong with you haha

actually i think the samsungs were the first 2 have a dual core gpu... and alot of people buy a smartphone for games.. its tasken over DS and PSP in market share for handheld gaming...cant argue with statistics
Technically, the A5 chip is better for graphics. However the most important factor here is that games are better on iOS. If you want to play on mobile, go iOS no questions asked. Since the GS2 screen is bigger, it's more comfortable to play, but games are late to release on Android.

yeah, i can wait for the games to release but i just want 2 know how much noticably worse the graphics will be, if at all?
and iphone 4s only ha 512mb of RAM.. will that matter?
Only 512 mb of ram will matter in the long run. Even if the games this time next year would be playable thanks to the GPU, they will lag due to the lack of RAM -- otherwise iPhone 5 wouldn't have any selling point.
As for GPU performance, despite being newer the A5 is hardly better: http://www.glbenchmark.com/compare....Apple iPhone 4S&D2=Samsung GT-i9100 Galaxy S2
The next generation A6 and Mali are most likely to double the performance.
The mali-400 use a quad-core configuration.

i have a iphone 4 and galaxy s2 as my main phones, i like playing games a lot and for that i use the iphone, games are smoother, better optimised , better looking ( on retina) and get updated faster if there are problems, that has a simple answer, developers have to develop for 5 hardware versions with are very similar anyway not like on android wich has hundreds of hardware versions, and games are can not be tested on all of them.

IMO it's very noticeable. My wife has the i4S so I've spent a good bit of time comparing. Gaming is on a whole other level with the i4S. Not sure if it's because the apps are better optimized or the gpu is just that much better. Asphalt 6, shadow gun, dead space all have a richer gameplay experience from graphics, to character control etc. Then you have games like Modern Combat 3 and Real Racing and atm there's just nothing on the android platform that's comparable.
One of the bad things for the Mali MP400(Or in that context the way it's implemented in the Galaxy S II) is its clocking mechanism(It's in no way a mechanism,I know, but I try to simplify things a lot). The GPU's clock must be 800MHz divided by an integer. So the next two options are 400MHz(800/2) and then 267MHz(800/3).So,because 400Mhz is a 50% overclocked state so to speak,Sammy had to stick with 267Mhz.If I remember well, the Tegra 2's Geforce ULP runs at 333Mhz(and still gets pretty much raped) and the overclocked to death version of the PowerVR SGX540 in the RAZR runs at 384MHz and STILL is worse. That's because we are all comparing stock handsets. My SGS2 with 400MHz GPU kicks the crap of all the aformentioned phones.
As for talks about dual-core GPU,it's a little more complex than that.GPUs are from their nature multi-core devices, but not in the way CPUs are. They use pixel shader cores, vertex shader cores and so on.In that manner, the Mali MP400 is quad-core and the GeForce ULP is octa-core.The SGX545 in the iPhone 4S is more like dual GPU.Still,we don't know how it's clocked.Plus, the SII is 6 months older. So,if we also take into consideration that last year's Desire HD with its relatively crappy(Compared to new ones) GPU plays all graphics intensive games smoothly,no,the SII won't suck for a long time.
Long post but for some it may be a worth read.

Nonsense. It's a stupid little mobile phone - if twice as much RAM as a PS3 can't do it, the programmers really should find another job.

You can't just talk out of your gut like that.
There's so much to consider in to account. Firstly being the PS3 has a harddrive to compensate for the ram. So that's the hardware dilemma covered.
And the second; there are more console gaming developers than there are mobile gaming developers due to mobile gaming being a new generation and developers would rather go for the easy option than spend hours and resources thinking about what they can fit on a 3.7 inch screen.
The third among many reasons; target audience for consoles are broad. You don't have 5 year olds owning a 4S. Hence momentum on gaming market for consoles is still in it's peak. And if you ask me, playing MW3 or BF3 on an iPhone would be suicidal.

No, the Mali 400 uses 1 vertex unit and 4 pixel units. Having 4 pixel units lead it to be called quad-core (probably for marketing purposes), but it is not true quad core. Hence the reason why the iPhone 4s' true dual-core still outperforms it.

PS3 has 512MB total RAM. It's not the amount that matters, it's how you use it
What I mean is, developers will be optimizing their games for what resources they have. Hence, I don't think there will be any performance problems next year.

No matter what people here might say, i might get flamed for this but...
If you want to play games, get an iphone 4s, Simple as that. Specs aside (yes GPU wise the a5 is faster than mali400 anyway), iOs is much better for gaming, more games. and higher quality games. not to mention games usually arrive on ios faster than they make it to android.
/flame shield on.
you both terribly wrong ;-)
1/ the ps3 has good cpus/gpus despite the age
2/ the ps3 only runs the game and optimized for gaming (including the dev tools and the apis)
3/the phone runs a lot of other things that the ps3 doesn't even have hardware for (starting by: how do you think the phone receives calls and messages even thus ur playing a game?)
4/the phones also have a runtime on top
5/phones have non voltile memory too
and please realize that ram has nothing to do with raw power, its just a fast access memory. means the more stuff you run the more ram you need.
eventually, ram is used to compensate loading times or how much data you can process at once, but that's not always as relevent

That would be very nice. A little sad I couldn't upgrade to the GS II but I think I can shell out for a new phone next year and a quad core Galaxy S would fit the bill.
I kinda want a galaxy Nexus, I missed out on the N1 so I do want a pure google device but samsung just gets it so right. Can't wait to see what they do with ICS.

Seems pointless to me.... quad core will b battery hungry and bare use both cores on gs2 lol. Meeeeh

na its for tablets. a dual A15 with A7 more likely.

Then don't upgrade! you forget the other millions who didnt update this year and will be looking at 2012 for the latest and greatest. Where is the sense in wanting an Apple like crawl in progression. Android gives companies like Samsung the freedom to concentrate on the hardware. It can only be a good thing for the consumer. While I do agree that it is somewhat pointless at this point in time, it's a common misconception that newer CPUs = more power usage. By that logic, a Core i7 will consume more power than the Core 2 Quad, which it does not.
CPU manufacturers control power consumption in a number of ways. The most common is a die shrink, manufacturing the CPU at a smaller level. The Exynos is a 45nm chip, and the next generation is supposed to be 28nm. Thus, we can expect power consumption to stay the same, or even decrease.
The other way is through the use of core gating. The OS simply shuts off the cores that are not in use, and wakes them up when they are needed.
Hopefully this helps to clear up some of the misunderstandings regarding CPUs and power consumption.
quad core has already been stated to be more battery friendly and the tegra3 chips is very clever only using more cores when needed and even having a stealth 5th core for mega low idle speeds
obvously the exynos is not a tegra3 but i am sure samsung will do some clever stuff too
quad core will be awesome , i am happy with my dual core sgs2 so wont upgrade for a while ive also bought extras etc so its not worth upgrading for me , however that doesnt stop quad core from being gooooooooooood
have you seen the gfx power it will bring , the extra camera capabillities it allows the manufactuers to use , the speed that the browser will work , how smooth the ui transisitions and scrolling will be even when multi tasking , it also brings support for up to 2gb of ram which alone is great stuff everyone knows the only thing better then ram is more ram
i think if we want our mobile to be proper mobile computers connected to bluetooth keyboards and usb hardrives then linked up to hdmi or dlna while doing back ground tasks , followed by some high end intensive 3d gaming with a bluetooth pad over hdmi while still doing background tasks , encoding high quality media on the fly and editing it without having to wait an age for it to finalise then qua core is a great thing as is the way that tech is moving so fast
the only problem i can see is fragmentation as things move so quick
its got to make it hard for devs etc which in the long turn could damage the platform a bit , however i am sure it will come to the point it will smooth out and tech wont accelerate so fast , maybe? lol
nvidia have a road map and it shows that they will be releasing a new cpu/gpu combo each year for at least the next 3-4 years before they think we will be at mobile maximum potenial , so get ready for this tradition to carry on for a while yet
Sadly I think this fragmentation might become a very big problem in the future, and is one area where Apple is unfortunately right.
Look at PC Gaming. A lot of people buy PCs not knowing exactly what the PC they bought at capable of. When it fails to run Battlefield 3 at an acceptable framerate they are not going to be happy.
For us techies, it's easy to know that you need at least a GTX 560Ti or something, but for Joe Sixpack out there they obviously don't know these things.
I think perhaps Google should enforce some sort of system requirement rating system. Give it a number scale to make it simple. So maybe the SGS2 scores 9/10, and Contract Killer requires a phone with at least 7 to run smoothly. So Joe Sixpack who bought a Galaxy 3 GT-i5800 that scores a 3 doesn't get all pissed off.
Hope I'm making sense here.
Nah fragmentation will be fine. Pc is still the choice for gamers over Apple mac, not including consoles. Transfer that to mobile phones, and as long as the android mobiles become popular enough, games will be great for them. Everyone will just know they have to have a good mobile just like their pc.
I read somewhere it would feature the AMD's new 8 core bulldozer CPU with nVidias GTX 590 in SLI.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
i dont really understand people complaining about fragmentation. Android isnt a phone, it isnt a manufacturer, its an operating system. Do people complain the laptop market is fragmented because some computers are on xp, vista or 7? Some are on faster processors than others? Did people ever complain that symbian updated on some phones but not others?
I just dont get it, Id rather new phones/tech come out than only one release every 18 months.
Who cares? My upgrade isn't due until 2013... When I will get the top of the line handset again. I'm sure that model will be usurped within 4-6 months too.
Maybe we should all keep our phones in their original packaging like toy collectors, so they can't contribute to the disastrous fragmentation issue.
The actual effect of this media-inspired phenomena on consumers is negligible.
LOL sorry - had to point out the galaxy s III still has an 8mp camera. =p
Almost sounded like the Samsung Nexus with the 5mp camera... ahaha.

Android phones vs iPhone is basically like PC vs console since PC has a billion different hardware and software configs where as a console as 1 (There are a few iPhones but you generally only support the latest 2-3 versions).
