Battery drain due to google services on JB 4.3 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello community,
there has been a problem that is driving me insane for a few days. I have had this problem with I think all roms based on android 4.3:
google services keeps my phone awake!
WIth trickster mod I could see that my phone never (!) goes into deep sleep. Wondering about that, I flashed some other 4.3 roms - same result. Google services is No.1 battery consumer. Please don't say... "it's your apps or gps that keeps your smartphone awake" because it is not!
After some research I found that many users, most prominently 4.3 users, have a similar issue. Appearently, there has been some problem with that since one of the latest updates so that either google maps, gps, google now, or services in general cause this drain. Updating did not help, going back to an older gapps version did not help me either.
Finally I went back to miui being based on 4.2.2 and ever since the drain has stopped and my phone enters deep sleep almost immediately after switching the screen off.
Who has the same problems? Has someone found a real solution, other than deactivating all google apps? At least, this did not help me...

Thx I have read it but did not find a solution to my problem as most still suggest to turn off gps or wlan options... Although I have to admit that it is related to my problem but yeah... searching the xda app is more than difficult
one user wrote to stop wifi from constantly scanning... will have to try this the next time I am going back to 4.3 but surely many (or all?) users are suffering from this?

Same problem here.
Flashed XL based on cm10.2 + core jb gapps (20130821) and immediately noticed this insane battery drain. Battery stats showed Google Services as a main cause of the drain, so I did some researching, and found out, that switching Location improvement (Wi-Fi & mobile network location) would walk around that wakelock bug in google services. So I turned it off, and it helped for a couple of days.
Then I decided to sync my contacts with google account, and after a while, I've noticed the battery drain again, but this time nothing helps. I believe I've switched off everything I could in every Google app I have, and yet the drain remains.

Hy im allso having this problem, snice yesterday battery drain from google services ..im still on CM 10.1.2 (4.2.2) waiting for stable 10.2 to show up.. I keep all my sync and all locations off, no extra "funny" aps..not even facebook app.
(I have' service disabler ' because my phone was suffering from data lost..consumed by google framework..but it solve it..)
I allso search before posting but no solution since all location services that i have found are off since i have this phone..
Ps. New to nexus. Only about two months.. Any clue? Greets

Solution: 2nd post!
I DID IT !
almost in the same time it drained almost all the battery before, now it has lost only 1% or 2%!!!!
after reading every single post on the internet (many thanks to who has investigated battery drainage), i've mixed the tips and tricks and what i did is:
(Maybe a lot of things are unnecesary)
- Disable syncing in gmail account (everything)
- delete software update's cache
- killed all services except only 2 first party services: SNS and Google services
- Tweaked the apps running on startup with "Autostarts" app.
- 3g off
- Wifi off
- BT off
and, as you can see, it's completely idle. it stayed like two hours without losing battery, constantly at 71%.
I hope this is helpful! I will try to discover slowly which one of these things drains so much battery!
it looks to me that to solve your problem you transformed your phone into a nokia 6310.
It was a good phone, lasting days or weeks but it had no 3G, no wifi, no mail sync ... just like your phone now
What happens if you turn on the 3G and the Wifi ? DOes it drain the battery in couple of hours ?
Just by turning 3g off will help
looking at the graph you posted it looks like where it has poor signal is when you experience steep drainage.
good idea to have all the features turned off when you are not using it. especialy 3g cause it will keep draining to get a better signal.
try using one of those widgets to turn on and off 3g so you don't have to drill into settings every time you need it.
You only have to keep pressed the power button and select the second option to disablr 3g... Data network.
I will update soon!

i'm on debusrom, gingerbread 2.3, in spain.
your problem is probably only solved temporally, all method you said has already been proven not working. it's probably a serious driver issue in all exiting gingerbread roms for sgs, have a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039696
My new broadcom wifi driver works like before update, phone is not sleeping ! It is not a wifi bug, it is not a dirty ROM flashing, it is not random app. Only 2 things left to consider Gingerbread core fault or broken device driver other than modem, wifi...

that means turning your SGS into a regular Nokia 1100. Why disable all features that make your device a smartphone?
i have used many stock and custom rom results are similar
disabling background data and syncronising gives better battery usage but makes it a simple phone
I'm shocked that turning off all that improved battery.

Jelly bean 4.1.1 "Awake time": Phone awake too often while screen off.

Hi Guys any tip to reduce the "Awake time" I think it is killing the battery.
Usage 33m voice calls, 1hr screen time, a few minutes gps.

Now comparing this to my Galaxy Nexus, You can see that the phone is not awake that much, and has better battery life..
Same OS 4.1.1 stock.
GPS on, Location service on, 3G, Data, auto sync On. BT off. Wifi ON, NFC removed, rotation Off, G+ removed, Talk removed. on both
Googlenow removed also
Same Nexus S with Gingerbread was often reaching the 3 days battery life
Thanks
airplane mode
use battery stats app
Phone process keeps the phone awake with a wakelock, tried everything almost. Went from JellyBelly to stock ROM, disabled BLN, different kernel (stock) and it's still happening. Don't want to over react here, but it seems like a JB thing.
In your case, you maybe have Latitude on.
Maps may mean Google now is running. Double check for the Maps issue.
Thanks guys I'm going to check the Latitude issue, I'm almost sure it is off, but will check when I see the phone at home.
Google now is also removed since day 1, (saving a bit of battery).
As suggested earlier, the app called 'betterbatterystats' may reveal more details about what's keeping your phone awake.

Thanks for the suggestion, I installed the app and Google maps was doing a lot of stuff.
I checked Settings\Accounts\google\maps and lattitude and turned off location reporting (didn't know it was on) I'll see if this helps.
It has automatic check ins on also but it is just not turning off (uncheck won't stick), hopefully it doesn't affect battery life and I don't have any saved places to check in.
Fwiw mine is also awake far more than screen on compared to my galaxy nexus. They are set up identically too (apps, widgets, etc.). I just figured it's a jelly bean thing on the ns. I still get pretty good battery life.
Do other people have the screen on time more closely matching the awake time on their ns?
Only got one Gmail account syncing and no Google+, no Facebook, and Google now disabled. Stock unrooted 4.1.1.

Wakelock hell

I've had my Note 4 for 3 days now and I'm noticing pretty average battery life.

http://imgur.com/uuJk9W1
I'm getting 3.5 hours of SoT in a good signal area, using WiFi for the majority of the day on 3G.
If you look at the screenshots, you can see suspiciously high battery usage by Android System, Google Play Services and Android OS.
I used the PC version of wakelock detector

As you can see, NlpCollectorWakelock is constantly wakelocking my device and seems to be ruining my battery life.
I have no interest in rooting my device in order to manually disable the wakelock. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to improve battery life or to reduce these wakelocks?
That is a bit strange, as I see excellent screen time. Just received my Exynos variant yesterday, and on the first full charge I am now at 41% battery with 5h SoT... Connected to WiFi all the time and Auto brightness.
Hmm...
I can only suggest to go into the settings and disable what you can - i.e.: Play Store auto-update off, etc. I don't think I have ever seen GP using that much; but I am only just coming back to Android with the N4 (Lumia 1520).

hi
i have taken note that you stated that you have no intrest in rooting!!
i would suggest to understand the "workings" of certain wakelocks eg .. NlpWakeLock ,is to read up about it !!
i suggest you read this thread post 1 by the dev cryptyk, re the " reason " NlpWakeLock occur etc etc
link below re
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-nlpunbounce-reduce-nlp-wakelocks-t2853874
i quote from his post # 1 ( halway down his post he gives explanation )
it might help you to understand the inner working of Android ??
....................................................................................................................................
Why is Play Services such a battery killer:
1) If Google Location Services are turned on, it sets an alarm to wakeup every 60 seconds, check the network location, and broadcast ALARM_WAKEUP_LOCATOR.
2) Everytime ALARM_WAKEUP_LOCATOR fires, Google Search receives the broadcast and grabs an NlpWakeLock and NlpCollectorWakeLock.
.......................................................................................................
Plse also note the "key" to this wakelock is ................
Google Location Services ,is yours turn on by you or by mistake .?
Just to note i am rooted ,have this xpose module Unbounce to control wakelock , but don't use it/
not enabled ,as my Google Location Services is turned off .( Check your Google setting ( you can do this without root )
this should reduce wakeups of this ... NlpWakeLock from waking up
good luck
I'm having much the same problem as this!
Currently only getting around 2(!) hours of screen on time during the day, before the battery is getting to 10 or 20% after around 15 hours off charge. I know the device can, and should be better than this!
When taking a look at the wakelocks today it's Android OS keeping the phone awake mostly. But over the last day, the device has been awake for 59% of the time, crazy!
Will try turning off location services tomorrow and see if that's any better. I'd rather not have to do that though, I shouldn't really need to!

N910F, "Android OS" battery drain - can't determine the cause

This started happening about a week ago... I didn't install any new apps in particular. I've attached screenshots to the post.
Screen-on time is a little below an hour in these screenshots.
As you can see Android OS and Android System are at the top of the list by a long shot. Android System seems "normal" in the sense that it has 58mn of CPU time and only 18mn of wakelocks (as reported by the built-in battery menu).
Android OS however kept the phone awake for 6h11 which seems like a lot. I'm not rooted, so I did the ADB USB trick in order to pull stats out of Wakelock Detector, and all of the apps clearly don't add up to six hours. Especially not the usual suspects like Google Services, Facebook, etc.
Diagnosis shows a LOT of system processes, and I'm not sure if that means 1) it's all good as far as user land goes (I don't have any weird apps) 2) there's a system process gone rogue for some reason 3) the cause isn't showing up 4) something else???
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Me too - 910F - im on Lollipop, but struggling to make it through a day at the moment.
Checking my Battery Graph is the same Story - my phone seems to be Awake constantly.
Seems Android System is using it....
Anyone have any ideas?
I can only recommend rooting your phones and change roms or kernels.
TW is heavy on battery and if you change to a CM rom the battery life will increase dramatically.
I have rooted all my phones since the very first android phone ever made and i cannot own a non rooted device as the freedom of rooting is just to awsome to ignore.
Every time i have battery issues i ether change my rom or kernel and then my issues goes away...
Can't root Verizon unfortunately
Hmm. Try this. Unchecked under advanced wifi, the option to let Google and apps use wifi, even when wifi off. Since then, 12 hours, I have had normal sleep. Did reboot after Unchecked. . Premature to say I fixed it, but so far so good.
Update. Since unchecking that wifi option, phone sleeping normally still.
Update #2- after 36 hours. It's back! Awake constantly. Unreal

Marshmallow WiFi battery drain issue

Just updated to Marshmallow with the OTA update. Having massive battery drain. Especially from WiFi. Have already switched off WiFi and Bluetooth scanning under Settings > Location. Is factory reset working?
Can't post screenshots. : (
after updating you should do a factory wipe from recovery. and let the battery settle it may take a few charging cycles.
Please before creating a new thread straightaway, read the whole forum completely.
There is a special android 6.0 issue thread. Let the phone settle down a bit. Also in wifi advanced settings turn the keep the wifi on during sleep option to never.
And then let phone go through 2 or 3 discharging cycles.
If still then you get this wifi drain, do a factory reset.

Hi. Thanks for the solution. I did what you said and have less battery drain today. However, it is inconvenient to have WiFi off while the phone is in sleep.
Also, apologies for posting a new thread about an old problem. I had read through a couple of posts but did not find a comprehensive solution hence I started this thread.
Anyway, i will do a factory reset and update shortly.

Thank you very much, done it! Even though, it happens to everyone? Or just some people?
I think I found another solution
I had the same problem, and turning off "wifi scanning" was not doing it for me. I believe the bug has something to do with "developer mode". I went to settings -> developer and under "network" I enabled "enable detailed Wi-Fi logging" and "always allow Wi-Fi searches".
Wi-Fi is no longer draining my battery, and I have "wifi scanning" enabled (under location).
Hi guys
I have the wifi drain after using Moto voice for a short while yesterday. I turned off and turned of location as well as wifi scanning but wifi is still at the top of the battery draining apps list. I used to get 2 hours sot by the time I git 80% but now I don't get that sot any more. All this started happening yesterday when I used Moto voice for the first time on 6.01 to try it out.
Any solutions or should I just wait a couple charge cycles?

I have the wifi drain after using Moto voice for a short while yesterday. I turned off and turned of location as well as wifi scanning but wifi is still at the top of the battery draining apps list. I used to get 2 hours sot by the time I git 80% but now I don't get that sot any more. All this started happening yesterday when I used Moto voice for the first time on 6.01 to try it out.
Any solutions or should I just wait a couple charge cycles?

Thanks! I had decent battery life on stock 6.0 but started noticing bad drain ever since I've been flashing custom ROM. I had indeed traced the drain to WiFi as others here, pretty much on all the ROMs I tried, and I couldn't figure out what setting was causing the drain. Turning off WiFi scanning in Location did the trick and I have my old battery life back.

Yeah the "drain" my device was reporting wasn't actually draining anything.
