So I've fine some searching and it seems nearly impossible to make these later androids Mount as a external hard drive like we used to.
Is there any easy to make it pure plug and play or do I need a third part apps to make it happen? If so--- I guess, what is the easiest way to make it happen (seems kind of lame imo).
Any help would be great. Thanks!
Well-- let me answer my own question through a weblink i just found on stock exchange. haha but, what's so good about MTP/Media Transfer Protocol?
Anyhow, this is what I got:
Go to Settings→About Phone/Tablet.
Go to “Build Number” at the end of the Scroll list.
Tap on “Build Number” repeatedly (7 times). On your third tap you should see message indicating that you only have 4 more taps to go to ‘become a developer’. Keep tapping until you are a developer. (a toast message will tell you so)
Now Developer Option will be included in setting list of yours now. Go to “Develop Options” to check USB debugging > OK. Done.
In combination with this, I had to download Android File Transfer--- But it's okay with the combined tabs of the internal and external SD card:
http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
Yep, so thats the story.. At least now if other people come over with there android's, I can connect them to my computer no problem. Still though am interested to know about this MTP stuff.. [would be good for knowledge within this thread]
Cheers
Lol I thought you were joking about the developer thing but I tried it anyways.

This works if you have root. It only works on the micro SD card though. Airdroid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid works over Wi-Fi for both storage places but it's slower than USB. Better than nothing I suppose. I don't store anything on the internal ram. I move everything over to the card.

Haha, nope
Glad to know in still helping out around here beyond myself in the process. Hah. It's good to be home.
Yes to you up top, the airdroid method works as well... But i prefer to be directly plugged in with USB.. It could be a helpful tool in the future though.. Thanks!
I guess there is no way around the software part though. The idea behind this thread and question is whether or not this droid can be plug and play wherever I go vs. Needing software to run it. Perhaps airdroid is where it's at.

I found a nifty little program that will change the icon your device displays when connected as USB Mass storage.
You just have to find a corresponding .ico file
Heres the program: SevenDriveIconChanger
http://www.mediafire.com/?mmkzmmt5tug
And attached is a Nexus One Windows icon and the 7changer app in a zip
You need an *.ico-file to use the IconChanger, I converted it and attached it in the ZIP-archive for maximum enjoyment.
Iconchanger? I just have an autorun.inf on the root of my SD card pointing to an icon.

Dammit, beat me to it!
Code:
[autorun]
icon=x.ico
Save as autorun.ini in /sdcard/ along with x.ico, job done.
The autorun.ini doesnt work for me.

You didn't save it as autorun.ini.txt did you?
Oh, and you have to have autorun enabled...
Edit: Also, try calling it "autorun.inf" (no quotes). Should do essentially the same thing.

Nail. Head.
It should be called autorun.inf, I made a typo
I haven't renamed it with .txt. I don't like using autorun for any kind of storage i insert into my PC so i set it to be off.
Maybe that's why it doesn't work. A Nexus One icon is not worth turning it back on.
Another option (Windows only) is USBDLM. With it you can configure icon, pre-assigned drive letter, drive/device label (as shown in explorer), and a raft load of other choices. It can run as a service and has x64 support, but requires direct editing of the .ini file (and manual installation if I remember correctly).
For example: On my desktop and notebook - Nexus One is always [N:], G1 is always [G:], backup drive is always [B:] (all with custom icons), regardless of which USB port I plug in to or what else is plugged in (those letters are never assigned to other devices).
It takes a bit of time investment up front, but is well worth it if you either need or want more configuration options for your external storage.

Wow, I haven't had a drive B in a long time. But not nearly as long as a drive A. I'd probably be a little freaked out if I set up a system like yours

It took some getting used to, but now that it's habit I actually get kinda freaked if I'm backing up to (or restoring from) something other than B:
DVD-RW=X:, Daemon-Tools=Y:, DVD-ROM=Z:
Always have to double take on other people's Windows boxes when looking for optical media. My system is definitely mine.
What's the proper way to copy a file that I had downloaded to my PC into the internal storage card?
I've chosen the mass storage mode, and connected the cable. WHen I go to the PC's explorer, under my computer, I see a removable disk E and F. But when I click on them trying to open it, it says "Please insert a disk into drive".
Anyone knows why I can open up the removable disk and drag my file into it?
Me:You silly and stupid fool. Don't you know that after connecting the cable, you need to pull down the notification bar, click on the usb connected message, then on there, choose to mount the USB?
Another me: Oh, I thought in the setting, I've already chosen the mounted option, so why mount again?
Me: Don't ask me. Just do it that way.
Another me: Okay. Sounds stupide to me, but as long as it works, I'm happy.
Me: And don't forget to go to the notification panel to turn it off after you finish using it.
Another: Okay okay. Don't need to scream at me.

I think this is maybe an indication that you don't havehave the proper drivers installed. I had a similar problem in the past and it cleared itself up, looking back it was probably cleared up after installing kies and the drivers as I no longer need to mount.

I rooted my Dx some time ago and removed the standard bloatware.
The one that I can't get rid of is that damned motohelper installer that pops up on my pc when I plug in my phone. It seems like it would be an 8mb ISO somewhere in /system/ but after spending WAY too much browsing everywhere that seemed meaningful I've got nothing.
dialing ##program doesn't show me the features option on 2.2.1 the same way that the incredible does. bummer.

Sadly, not that I've been able to find. BTW, I started another thread here the other day. I've searched many Android forums and have posted several times to Motorola's own seemingly pointless Support Forum. Welcome to the club

The cd is its own partition... /cdrom and mounted when needed. Doesn't waste space in system
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
It still consumes storage space somewhere. Anyway, it's still an annoying issue that we need a solution to prevent from mounting. I really dislike not being able to use my DX to play music through the USB port in my car stereo.
Good point
just edit this line in the build.prop:
persist.mot.usb.mediasync = 1
change it to 0
crud, didnt work

Then, in theory, you should be able to delete/format the partition using something along the lines of GParted.
I don't know what effects this would have on the phone though. I assume it wouldn't brick; however, I guess it would have to be tested to know for sure.
Would an SBF restore this CD partition if the phone did brick?
I am sure you can just kill it by disabling autorun on your windows. Sure it will kill it for everything, but that is why the setup.exe was invented.

The concern isn't with preventing the image from mounting on a computer, that's easy to remedy, either by disabling autorun for Windows and/or enabling USB debugging mode on the DX. The crux of the issue is mounting my DX on my car stereo. USB debugging doesn't appear to help "fix" that situation
This problem adds insult to injury for me. I use a Mac (it was a gift) so every time I mount my phone to the computer, the motohelper disc pops up, but I can't even use it because it's a Windows only executable.

Hi, the only way I found was disabling it service "Motorola Device Manager Service".
Still no sdcard slot!
Still no USB On-The-Go memory device support (we have USB joystick support but still no memory devices)
I haven't tried abusing the Camera Connection Kit yet to see if I can use a camera as a memory card reader.

It's never been a problem. 3.x and higher use MTP so they can stop using FAT32 for internal storage. Linux does MTP just fine. What are you talking about?

why was this method needed? Xoom will not show up as a drive, unless you do this. Where as with the Droid X, once plugged in, it showed up as a drive. I hope this makes sense.

USB Mass Storage is the old method and it shows up as a drive. The Droid X is older than the Xoom therefore it is using USB Mass Storage.
MTP is Media Transfer Protocol and is the method used by 3.0 and higher.
How is it that you're using Linux and you don't understand this stuff?

Hmmm, from Android Honeycomb 3.1 Details ...
...Android 3.1 still isn’t intended, at the operating system level, for managing external storage devices. This detail, which came out in conversations I had with Google engineers today, explains why the Android file system organization is, well, a mess...
“We don’t want to expose the user to file locations,” explained Hiroshi Lockheimer, director of engineering at Google. “How do you manage that as a user? The not-good answer is with the file browser.” Lockheimer says that many of the experiences I’ve seen so far are what individual hardware manufacturers have enabled, as opposed to what Google has provided natively. The good thing is that Lockheimer says Google is looking at ways to do this; but the problem hasn’t been solved yet...

He did answer you. The xoom uses mtp which will not show up as a drive in Linux unlike older android which used mass storage. Mtp allows you to add files with out having to unmount the file system on the xoom. There are many threads on how to set mtp up. If you're new to Linux it may seem hard to do but its simple. Do a Google search for mounting xoom Ubuntu and you should find them easy.

totally agree. there are lots of things i understand why they're waiting, but this? come on. i could clear all on my phone.
I just want to clear up a misconception about MTP. It is not a cross platform solution for transferring files.
My post from another thread on the subject:
I can mount my Xoom in linux using libmtp and mtpfs, however, it's slow, kludgy, and generally feels like it will flake out at any moment. Additionally, even when it's mounted, I can't seem to copy music across properly; it doesn't keep the folder structure. In fact, the directories are created and any non audio files are copied across fine, but every mp3/audio file is flatly dropped into the Music directory.
I tried to copy some music onto it from my fiancee's windows xp laptop and it worked ok (though the album art didn't appear).
The move away from mass storage to MTP is a massive disappointment for me. Mass storage has always been a big selling point for me when purchasing a device and for Google to switch to using a Windows specific protocol and consider it cross platform is a big letdown. MTP on mac requires a special app and on linux, support is dire, certainly for anything more complex than simply pulling images from a camera.

I can just about get files onto the xoom, but I can't load music onto it; all of my mp3s just land up in the top level of the Music directory, regardless of how I attempt to transfer the files. I think transferring a zip file of the music and unzipping from within a file manager on the xoom might do the trick, but this isn't a good, workable solution. I understand the reasoning behind MTP, but it most certainly isn't cross platform and shouldn't be mentioned as a working solution by Google.
Hopefully people will soon realise not to keep insisting that the xoom has linux support when using MTP.
New update for drag racing is really choppy, lile playing angry birds on a g1.... but samauri II and the other thd games run smooth...dont kmow if its 3.1 kernel cuz it plays fine on my mytouch4g

Change all the extension names in the song file name to .mp and it will allow the transfer
Then use something of your liking, I use astro file manager, and just add the 3 on the a tail end of the extension.
Its a b, but you can at least get a couple good songs on there.

You're right, it's a cross-platform solution for transferring MEDIA, being the Media Transfer Protocol.
It's smart enough to detect the media files that it supports and put them in the right place. I prefer it over the old way, I hated having to unmount the sdcard every single time.
A poorly made Linux MTP library doesn't make it not cross-platform. It's an open standard for transferring media to USB devices.
It's not perfect, but it's great for a device like the Xoom where unmounting the internal memory is not desirable.
Honestly users get really confused by all of the extra directories when mounting an android sd-card anyways.
