Hi all,
i am a relatively new nexus 4 owner. loving the buttery smoothness and amazing battery life with stock rom, loving it more with sentinel rom.
so the thing is, i wish to protect my device against theft. in the case it does happen, i would want to be able to retrieve it.
read online reviews about cerberus and find it wonderful! just the app i need...until i realized something. what if the first thing the thief did was to power off the nexus 4 instead of attempting to crack the pin? wouldn't that kinda render the anti-theft app useless? still pretty new with this so please correct me if i am wrong
having said that, is there a way to prevent unauthorized shutdown of nexus 4? like prompting of pin before user will be allowed to shut down the device.
He can shut it down all he wants. But he won't be able to boot it up to use it. You'll have enough time to take a picture of him using the app by then.

what if, for some reason, the thief decided to not use it but just keep it (weird thief i know), he can just power down and there will be no way the cerberus will be able to take a pic through the "wrong pin" method.
so there's no way one can pin lock the power down, reboot processes?

No one steals a phone to make it an expensive paperweight lol. But you're being too paranoid on it, he probably isn't that smart if he's stealing a smartphone knowing that it can always be traced. If not by cerberus, then by Google device admin.

I've thought about the same thing when a friend of mines phone was stolen. Couldn't call or locate it cuz it was turned off. Use uXylon ROM (4.2.2), Dirty Unicorns ROM (4.2.2), or PAC ROM (4.3). They have a power menu option that let's u hide the power off and reboot options during the lock screen.

True, nerds like us know about the hard reset. But average cell phone user wouldn't think of that. They'll hold the button till something happens, of which the power menu will pop up. They'll likely won't keep holding it.

that's awesome! i might give it a try. i became paranoid ever since my i9305 got stolen last week and i failed to install any form of protection on it.
I'd be interested in being able to not have the Power Menu come up on the lock screen too... I'm just on rooted stock right now.
Yes it might make me feel a little better about it getting stolen, but I do understand about the long hold which will still work.
Mostly I'd just like to prevent my own pocket shutdowns... seems like that's happened a handful of times to me.
Anyone know which, if any, 4.4 kit kat ROMs have continued this option setting? I'm still rocking PAC 4.3.

I gutted a momentary button switch to push in that barely grazes the button, but I will come up with something. I've been studying the internals, so what I'm thinking is hard wiring the tablet to my remote wire so the radio controls it being on. Also I plan on hard wiring the charger to work off the accessory wire to turn the tab on and off.

Sometimes when I tried to press the edit button, back button or home button the phone does not react. Volume and power buttons works fine. I almost thought that I had a faulty unit with an intermittent problem.
In actuality, as long as the proximity of the S-pen triggers a blue dot on the screen, these buttons are deactivated for some unknrown reasons.
SO ANNOYING.

Well lets say I turn my phone on while I'm in a dark spot, so the brightness sets to low level, but then I enter a room with more light, or exit on the street so the brightness gets too low. Get it? I'd like to have the auto-brightness, otherwise I can set the level manually, as I'm used to.

Hi! Thanks for this thread I have (noob) question Is there some possibillity, that s iii mini has light sensor on board, but it is dissabled (by kernel on by something)?
I am maybe totally wrong, but on front side is camera, proximity sensor and third "circle" where could be light sensor???
We dont't have otg support by defaul, but it can wokrs so why not light sensor?
Some state it does, some that it does not. I believe it does not, since I dont see why sammy wouldn't include the sofware for it in the first place.
Sent from my GT-I8190 using xda app-developers app
then why we have a otg hardware support but we can't enable it unless by a custom kernel
Someone who works at a service center may know how the hardware looks better.
Or someone can risk flashing an s advance rom, it has same hardware right?

Oh, no. Even if you remove the device name checks from the updater-script and make it flash somehow, you're bricking it. Let the hardware be same. It will brick.
Sent from my LG-P500 using Tapatalk 2
Ok so we need an ALS chip (ambient light sensor) somewhere on the mother board. If we have this we need to include in the kernel drivers, closest mach would be i8160. We might run an easy test with such a kernel and the display setting coded in to a rom from the same i8160.

Hi! Today I was cleaning my s iii mini and I looked under front cover, where is proximity sensor and found there something like this. So I thing that we have brightness sensor too, but question is, if it is hw disconnected or only sw disabled???
I was thinking about it and I have question: Is possible to port ROM from Samsung Galaxy S Advance to our mini? Both phones are similar and this tutorial should help.

Im asking you this because I want to know if it is a software issue or hardware issue. So if when u boot the phone you see the same green waves screen on top of the black screen and the samsung logos then must likely it would be a hardware problem...
so need to check the water sensors etc. If u dont see the green waves then just do a full wipe if problem persist try flshing an other rom.

I think this hardware issue. You need send phone tk service center to replace screen.

Geez people, read the responses, it's a hardware problem... If you are squeezing around the edge and thi fixes it means there's a hardware problem....
You might have fixed this time but what might happen next time you put in your pocket?
No never,
Inviato dal mio SM-N9005 utilizzando Tapatalk
seems to me its hardware problem, get it fixed before it gets worse.
It is hardware, maybe you placed the phone in your pocket or applied some pressure on it.
If this re occurs, have the display replaced..
I've conacted Samsung and they've sent me a package to post the phone to their service centre . unfortunately there's a 2 week return time. In the mean time I've bought a moto g that my mum will buy off me when I'm done with it.

Same here... I do know what OP is talking about but I don't see it as a bug.
@op I mean, if you slide it yourself, why would it automatically slide? I guess it'd make more sense if Samsung disabled manually sliding it. I think that they allow us to manually slide it though for those situations where we'd like to override it temporarily. Idk, I don't think it'll get fixed as it isn't actually a bug. Maybe they'll add an option to disable the slider while on auto.

I notice the following -
1) Excellent improvement regarding palm rejection. The edge sensitivity which on a scale of 1-10 was an 8 before in my case, is now a 1. The issue is almost none existent.
2) improved overall speed.
