Hi People from XDA,
I tried building AOSP myself using this guide: source.android.com/source/initializing.html
I thought the build was successful, so I attempted to boot it. Here's when I ran into problems...
My device is stuck on the "Android" screen, and when I do an adb logcat, this keeps repeating itself:

Did building give any errors? Are you sure you have the whole source?
I would sync the repo again, and make another build.
Btw: AOSP 4.3 is JSS, not JWR. Just saying.

I didn't see any errors at the time, but I'll rebuild anyways.
I know the newest AOSP is JSS, but you also have JWR, I just didn't use the latest branch, so I don't have to deal with deadlocks.
When my rebuild is complete (might take a while..) , I'll post the results.
Did you grab the proprietary blobs?

Yes I did, but I'm not sure where I should place them..
I just put them in the root of the repo directory, is that correct?

Correct, in the /vendor sub dir. Assuming you mean repo=source folder rather than /.repo folder.
Not sure if this still applies when building 4.3; haven't build AOSP in a while:
Code:
Note 2: Two files will fail to be copied, due to permissions. They’re in the vendor project I’ve created, but you’ll have to find another way to pull them off the phone (e.g. root the phone, and chmod them and their parent dirs.)
/system/etc/firmware/wcd9310/wcd9310_anc.bin
/system/etc/firmware/wcd9310/wcd9310_mbhc.bin

They go in the /vendor/ folder within your downloaded source.
Also make sure that you do a full clean build after adding them (make clobber, before you compile)
Thanks, the libs are in the correct place, and I did do a "make clobber".
I hope a rebuild will work, but I'm a little suspicious it won't, because nothing has changed in my configuration...
I'm also going to try it with the master branch on another computer. Can I just change the branch and sync my current sources?
Any luck?

Update: I synced my sources, and build again, but with the same results
Would it be helpful if I deleted my sources and downloaded them all over again?

Ok thanks, I will.

I remember that happened with my previous sources too, but I just initiated another repo sync and it solved the problem, it seemed...
Could that be the problem?
Anyway, I'm going to boot up my laptop and try it there...
Another Update: I tried it on my laptop while using the master branch, and i have exactly the same error.
Also, when I'm going back to another ROM after flashing my AOSP-build, the ROM only detects around 5gb of storage (I have the 16gb model).
This is solved by wiping all partitions and flashing the ROM again. Why does that happen?

That's a bug introduced in JB for some reason, happened to me once when I first got the N4. Temporarily freaked out.

Is it possible to emulate an android ROM on a computer?
If you grab the SDK, you can run any version of Android in the emulator. If you want to run an actual ROM you will need to create an image of /system (as system.img) and replace that with those in the SDK folder.
thanks alot! that helped me alot
and yes, i want to run an actual ROM. what filesystem does it have to be?
was thinking about something like...
(cd PATH)
dd if=/dev/zero of=system bs=1024 count=#KB_needed
losetup /dev/loop0 system
mkfs -f FS /dev/loop0
(mkdir /mnt/system)
mount /dev/loop0 /mnt/system/
cp -a system /mnt/system/
umount /mnt/system/
losetup -d /dev/loop0
do you know any good tools for this exept for dd?
Never tried so I honestly don't know, you sound like you know a lot more than me about creating/mounting images than me, so it's probably best to use your judement. The easiest way is just to make a nadroid back backup, flash the ROM you want to test, nadroid that and grab system.img, revert to your old nandroid backup. It's tedious, and it doesn't help if you want to test a ROM before flashing, but that's the only method I've heard people use.
okay. thanks
HTC Sense UI system.img
Does anybody know where I can download a system.img for a HTC with Sense UI (Hero for example)? I have been looking for ages with no luck.
My app is not working on a customers Hero and I am trying to find a Hero system.img to run in the emulator so I can work out why it fails on this phone.
I dont own a Hero, so am unable to extract my own system.img.
You can get HTC official ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
if you've got a windows computer you probably could extract the content of this exe file and then try to follow my previous instructions to make the system.img.
And if you don't have an unix/linux box.. You could send the content of the exe file to me, if you are able to extract the data in it. (I'm in China with a netbook atm and not able to extract the exe file with my limited tools). Then I could try to make you a system.img
I tried that, but without an HTC phone connected to the PC USB the exe wont extract.
I take that back. I found the files in my temp folder. I have extracted ROM.zip including the system.img into the avd folder, but the emulator is failing to bring it up.
could you upload that zip file here or on rapidshare? then i could have a look at it
Here is the rom.zip file from RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.38_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver.exe:
rom.zip
Other people must be doing this kindof thing to test their apps?
Here is the logcat. It looks like the sytem process is starting to come up, then fails. This repeats over and over.

Anybody?
Someone must have emulated HTC Touch / Sense UI?!
Okay... After unzipping and manipulating a 2.1 ROM to my liking; I have now resigned it...
Can someone please explain to me how I would go about testing it with the Android SDK Emulator?
I have already created a 2.1 AVD and the emulator loads to the "ANDROID" screen...
What must I do to test out this newly packaged ROM file?
i work on a new rom with files from Carbon Team. the files works good in my 4.2.2 AOKP Rom
only one problem
- my rom install have no sim card pin
- no mobile network
- mistake searching network providers
- not calling (i can see my contacts)
the problem is in the framework files, systemUI.apk , settings.apk
if i insert this files from my AKOP rom all works good only with non carbon system. if i insert this files from carbon i have the problem
PLEASE HELP ME FOR A NEW HD2 ROM
send me a PM and i will make a upload

pixelfreak
I never encounter this issue.
Did you use telephony-common.jar and Phone.apk from the same source from Carbon?
Maybe you could download Carbon's telephony source and patch this commit and this commit.
re
i have test with your common-telephony.jar and phone.apk from V2.2 4.2.2 and with the files from my aokp and all the same problem with incoming call

Format with fastboot and then flash stock ROM

If you need further help just let me know
Hello, Thanks for the reply.
That works.
However I am interested in fixing the above problem as I am trying flash Taintdroid. This my guess: might be related to the missing GPU binaries for Nexus 10.
When I use the image given here and the binaries this error disappears but gives another error.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2378405
To further surprise I get the same error for Nexus 4 as well when I built the Android including Taintdroid.
If your building your own ROM from source a great resource is this thread

And for logcat and kernel errors see here

Best of luck!
Hi All,
Any experts on the initial boot stages (radio, I think of android).
Quick back story:
1) Found that on 28 Dec 2015 Nexus 4 dead overnight. Turned on got stuck in a boot loop I (and it's stock 5.1.1. LMY48T) found that it was hanging on first boot coloured dots or 'starting apps' after optimising apps. Prior to this it had been turning off randomly, unresponive with flashing notification light, loosing network when low on battery, asking for SIM pin. It came back on once a few days later, then same issue.
2) After trying many things (and failing as it's locked, unrooted and doing anything would wipe user data) - I managed to get logcat going and see what was going on - it seemed to hang due to audio issues.
3) Recently opened it up, checked all connections and added a new battery (just in case) - no change
3) Recently I got into the shell and pulled and then delete the DCIM folder to free up some internal space (it was very full). Then re-sidedloaded the OTA LMY48M > LMY48T (clearing caches).
3) After a few restarts it came back, but then after restarting after a successful boot back to square one - so this ruled out full storage as being the culprit.
4)Tried deleting caches again and after a few restarts it has just come back (now doing a full adb backup).
Looking through adbcat I'm now more convinced it's a hardware and/or software issue over the radios - as on a successful boot some kickstart stuff works out well (essentially completing the Sahara protocol for some ESF / MDM9K). On an unsuccessful boot something fails and keeps trying, rearing it's head further up the tree as audio policy issues.
I know in 4.3.3 and in 5.x of Android Nexus4 were having radio issues - so undecided if this is a software or hardware issue (or both).

Sahara Protocol...
Narrowing down the issue.
Decided to try and restart into safe mode and also with airplane mode on.
Surprise, surprise restarting and the same old error occurred. This time thought I would keep adb rebooting until I saw that the Saraha protocol was successful. Did this 4 times and on the 4th time seemed ok.
It went and optimised apps again (due to unsuccessful boot).
Found this thread about the Sahara Protocol: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2403798

Usage:
-h --help Display this usage information
-n --noclosedevnode Don't close port since it's vanished
-v --verbose Print verbose messages
-m --memdump Force memory debug mode
-i --image Force sahara image transfer mode
-c --command Force command mode
-p --port Device name for USB driver
-o --old Use old PBL boot structure for Dload
-r --ramdumpimage Image ID which must be transferred before forcing memory dump
-w --where Path to store files received from target
-t --timeout Port timeout (in seconds) to use for Sahara transfer
-d <img_id:file_name> --dload <img_id:file_name> Use DMSS download protocol for loading the image
-s <img_id:file_name> --sahara <img_id:file_name> Use Sahara download protocol for transferring the image
Example usage:
sudo kickstart -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -d 10:dbl.mbn
sudo kickstart -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 11:osbl.mbn -s 2:amss.mbn

Further update...
Managed to get it into safe mode after four boots. Then turned off SIM Pin and restarted (to get back into normal mode).
Again took about 4 restarts before the Sahara protocol was successful and (after optimising apps agin due to incomplete boots).
Thinking this rules out previous things like storage being full, side-loading system update, resetting cache and installed App problems - as actually the successive reboots that some of these options created were perhaps the key to success - leaving:
* Firmware images on the boot partition corrupting / not being read properly (software fix)
* Hardware issue of the boot partition
* Hardware issue on the qualcomm chipset stopping firmware being loaded
As far as I can tell external hardware variables like temperature have no effect.
My phone is freezing while in call, neither I or my caller can hear each other while this happens.
From logcat it looks like some kid of audio problem but I don't know what is the real problem.
Could anyone better than me in logs reading tell me how the fix this or what's causing this?
