All About Samsung Galaxy SIII's Audio - Galaxy S III General
I have compiled here some mods (like Beats Audio, Clear Audio+, Acid Audio, Awesome Beats...) and kernels that include hardware level audio improvements What does this means? They are audio systems specially for (DACs (Digital-to-Analog Converter) Wolfson[/URL]. They are the following:
-Voodoo Sound/Scoobydoo Sound:It's the audio system developed by supercurio for the Wolfson DAC WM8994( Included in the well known Galaxy S and Nexus S) and ported non oficially by gokhanmoral to our DAC Wolfson WM1811 present in the Exynos versionsof the SIII (GT-I9300 and GTI9305) and on Galaxy Note II. But recently has been improved by my friend googy_anas, who included Wolfson Sound features (Private mode, Mic Gain control and Headphone amp balance), and made it fully compatible with CM/AOSP roms.
-Boeffla Sound: It's the audio system developed by AndiP from supercurio's work (Voodoo Sound) and from Gokhanmoral's port. Stands for including new features in the app:
-5-band parametric equalizer (Hardware EQ)
-Microphone gain controller
-Private Mode: Deactivates the speaker when headset is plugged.

The options are better explained in the second post.

We continue with the US LTE Qualcomm processor SGS3 (Qualcomm WCD9310) graphs and comparisons.
Fuente GSMArena
Sound differences between models (Exynos vs Qualcomm):
If we talk about Galaxy SIII audio, we can have different experiences depending of the DAC included on the SoC.
Exynos (Wolfson)
If you have the International model, Exynos, you have the Wolfson DAC, which highlights by his wide soundstage and by its sound clarity and quality. Wolfson is a well known brand by audio experts, formed in Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1984 and since then, they have been making professional audio systems. The best examples, and the most close to our case, is the use of their DAC's in iPods [iPod Video (5G)], in the old Samsung flagship. the Galaxy S and in multiple music players (Meizu M6, Meizu M9...). A year ago, they put their 28 years of experience in another project with Samsung (Previously with Galaxy S) and released the WM1811 DAC, which was going to be incorporated in Exynos 4 Quad SoC of the International Galaxy SIII. They made a pretty similar DAC to Galaxy S one, making compatible almost all the code with the new one http://opensource.wolfsonmicro.com/content/linux-drivers-wolfson-devices). Then, all "supercurio" work (Voodoo Sound) was ported by "Gokhanmoral" to International Galaxy SIII, adding it to his kernel (Siyah Kernel), and by that way, it was possible to raise much higher volume levels without distortion (6db-->63/63) (Original 50/63) and to improve sound quality.
Since that, @AndiP modified Gokhanmoral's work to make Boeffla Sound, which was having a more confortable interface and was fixing FM radio problem when DAC Direct was activated, in addition to new functions (Private Mode and Mic Gain Control). But @AndreiLux (Perseus kernel author and developer) modified @AndiP work by cleaning his code, and by fixing EQ parameters.
But if that wasn't enough, after all the improvements, my friend Anas Reggoug (@googy_anas) added all additional Wolfson Sound features (Andreilux's work) to Scoobydoo Sound (Gokhanmoral's port) and made it fully compatible with AOSP/CM roms. He also activated an unused 5 band speaker EQ in Wolfson sound and made a sound engine switch, to choose between Stock, Wolfson and Scoobydoo.
Also is notable the default_gain.conf file discovered by @Meltus. It was the first audio mod for our International Galaxy SIII. This file controls the gain coming from the DAC, and it let us rise or lower volume levels on headphones and speaker.
Qualcomm
If you have the Qualcomm processor, you have the Qualcomm WCD9310 DAC, which is common in all Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC's, even on Galaxy S4's Snapdragon 600 (But it's been improved). This DAC doesn't highlights by his audio quality, in fact, this is the weak point of this version. The Head-Fi experts consider the DAC as quite bad. I couldn't test it by myself, but someone who has a Nexus 4 should know how it sounds.
Jelly Bean latency (93ms):
The sound latency is a problem in Android since always, but in Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), has been reduced a lot. Previously, in ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0), we were having aprox 200ms of latency, but now, in Jelly Bean, it has been reduced to 93 or 92ms in our case (In Galaxy Nexus, 89ms).
The latency is noticeable when we use audio apps, like Morphwiz, Caustic 2 or a virtual keyboard. Due to it, we appreciate so much the improvement, however it doesn't reach iOS levels.
But if Google work wasn't enough, Sonoma is developing a low latency audio system called "LLA", which attempts to reduce latency to 20ms. http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech...ces-android-low-latency-audio-solution-570274

Hello mates. I hope you like this thread. I want to share my settings:
I use Googy-Max kernel with Acid Audio v7 and ClearAudio+ in 1st ROM (UltimaROM v14.0.1) and Viper4Android on 2nd ROM (Stock CM10.2).
I really recommend Acid v7+ClearAudio+, if you use a Sammy rom. However, if you use an AOSP rom, I recommend you Viper4Android before Acid.

Great thread man. Thanks!
Good work and very useful.
Thanks.

Excellent summary rafaelpernil!
As you are an expert on these matters could you clear something up for me? Is it possible, with any of these kernels, to get 24bit 192kHz audio from the s3? I'm sure the Wolfson chip has the specs but I can't get Neutron to output better than 16bit 44.1kHz (Omega rom, Boeffla kernel). Thanks.

It's not like there's a difference for listening so I wouldn't bother.

Hmm it's a good question. Our DAC can achieve 96kHz at 24bit (Not 192kHz) but, by default, Android only supports 16bit 44.1kHz. So the answer is NO. Android doesn't allow us more than 16bit and 44.1kHz but we can boost hardware part with kernels like Googy-Max. You can make high rate music sound better by activating DAC Oversampling.
But, sincerely, I don't think we need that high rate. It supposes higher battery drain which doesn't compensate the small sound quality improvement.

Somewhere i read by using poweramp there is no need for these mods, true?
Is not Acid 7 newer version of Acid 5? Are they different?
Acid 7 always fc or bootlop problems in 4.2.2 roms, could you achieve flashing it to 4.2.2 roms?
Which one do you recommend, i only listen to speech record files, not music. I used most of these mods before but forgot the results because
everyday i flash a different rom several times.
I really dont understand about the vodoo sound. is this the app or mod. if it is where is the download link can some one help me please.

Hmm, yes they are different. v5 is compatible with Walkman and v7 not, but v7 is compatible with ClearAudio+. Although there are more changes you can check in changelog.
v7 works as expected on 4.2.2 (CM10.1), I tested by myself. But you have to make sure you flash proper version (Stock or AOSP) and follow the instructions.
And finally I recommend you Acid v7 + ClearAudio+ if you are on Sammy. It's just because AOSP version is too bassy (Awesome Beats's fault) , which is not convenient for vocals. So I recommend you Viper4Android if you are on AOSP.
But actually, vocals on SGS3 sound great without any mod.

EDIT: Poweramp has a big DSP effect and is not compatible with mods by default. But if you deactivate DAC Direct, the mods should work. But actually, I recommend you Neutron MP, which has much better sound.

It's a sound mod driven by the kernel and made from Wolfson sources. It's not a mod like Acid or Beats, this mod controls the DAC behaviour and needs to be implemented into a kernel.
If you want Voodoo Sound (Ported and Updated), just look into kernel section of this thread and flash any of the kernels.

thats really cool ... very informative ...
I have asked for this to be considered as a sticky .
Viper4Android gives multiple choices and would now be my first stop in testing .
Even the basic apk is a slightly better sound manager than DSP .
Instructions need very careful reading .

AC3 or DTS pass though over HDMI
Digital sound (pass through) is not possible so far I know on Android. People who say it works, please prove it. Guess they mean dolby pro logic, or that the stereo sound is converted to 5.1 or 7.1 by the receiver. The receiver should show that it's encoding AC3, Dolby digital or DTS, otherwise its not working. Hope this will change, because a media center without digital multichannel sound is not really a media center.

I'm also waiting for this to buy a TV stick myself... it seems only a handful of devices in the whole Android world supports this feature, with the right firmware and video player nonetheless (see http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=150342&pid=1300761#pid1300761 for instance) Also, it seems there's some licensing at play here: I'm not sure where but I saw that a manufacturer can't implement the dd/dts passthrough on their firmware/drivers without licensing the codecs first (and given how closed source are these drivers, it's not something the community can deal with easily)

Well if you can show proof that it can (video/picture with your receiver showing DTS/DD multichannel working) than it sounds promissing for future devices. Btw if anyone else with Android mini-pcs can test and report if their device does DTS/DD Hdmi passthrough that'll be great. Until now i think they can't and i hope future android minipcs like the Ouya will support this, although i think it won't (out of the box)
The Minix X5 seems like a good box and they give good support, what is kind of special for chinese products. They say in their forum that multi channel audio is on it's way. http://minixforums.com/index.php?posts/2881 I would prefer a Minix above the Gbox because of the better GPU.

the second no go is hdmi cec functionality - try Raspberry PI - is fine
Hi guys, I'm going to buy a stick but the lack of audio passthrough is blocking me as I will use this stick for media purposes. Nearly all files I have are at least dts or ac3 5.1 channel sound. Would anybody have an update on this? I'm trying to search on Internet but not much info about progress of rockchip.
There still aren't any Android Mini PC/Stick that do multichannel passthrough. (correct me if i'm wrong) The Ouya promised this on kickstarter in the promotional videos but they didn't deliver so false promises, so they are dead to me now. RK3066 devices can't through HDMI and the few devices that have an optical out can neither. RK3188 the few reviewed devices can't and the ones that are getting optical out aren't released yet so haven't been reviewed afaik. I don't know about any other device or chip that does support this yet, so do share if you know one.
The Minix X5 (RK3066) should have a new firmware now that supports AC3 5.1 pass through to optical out {spdif). HDMI no pass through.
It's a firmware situation. Check out this video here demonstrating XBMC on the UT1, and another device called the Hi718 which seems to perform pretty good. Both have SPDIFF audio output. Without allowing the DTS encoded audio to pass through untouched, the devices decode the DTS sound and digitally output the audio via the SPDIFF. I just have the new UT1, so I can't speak with any authority on the HI718, but from the video it looks the same. In the user guide for the UT1 it shows audio pass through option, and it maybe in the new UT1 firmware they just posted on the UT1 forum. I just haven't got the balls to reflash my device yet as there is always a degree of flash fear when a device is working really well lol UT1 XBMC hardware playback test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2qsprNRV6Y Hi718 Review with hardware video playback tests. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heRQOpaCstU

I haven't watched the videos completely but if they decode the DTS and then output it'll probably be only 2.0 stereo.
Reviewer stated he was getting 5.1 channel sound, so I don't think it's stereo. Also XBMC show DTS and AAC when he's playing some of the files. If you read my post, you will know I know what audio passthrough is, hence everything I wrote in my post relates to it. Which part didn't you understand?
Adjust Parametric Equalizer of Wolfson DAC (Voodoo/Boeffla)
As many out there know the wolfson audio DAC has been the subject of many sound mods to improve smartphone sound quality. Supercurio was the pioneer in this and made some great DAC control enhancements namely voodoo sound. This has been continued with the work of the boeffla sound, scooby doo and various wolfson control programs in many kernels for the Note 2, S3 intl. In both boeffla and voodoo mods there is a section for activating the onboard parametric equalizer of the DAC. What has NOT been available is a way to adjust the frequency, bandwidth of the bands. So we were left with fixed bands that could have gain adjustment only. Up to now I have been using the parametric equalizer of Neutron player which is quite good but thought why not try to do the same thing with the wolfson DAC directly. Since it is an on chip feature it takes not extra cpu time or battery use. Looking through many posts and boards, there was no real data on how to do this. So I started tinkering with the equalization band parameters directly and was able to get frequency adjustment changes looking at RMAA curves. But there seemed to be no good pattern to what I was doing. I was ready to just give up but found a post on a raspberry pi thread about changing some registers on the wolfson DAC and was finally able to do it. So here it is: Go to http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/support/wisce and download the WISCE software for the 8994 board. Then download the 8994 "board" http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/product...ments/uploads/software/WM8994Setup_Rev3_0.zip. Install the wisce, then the 8994 board. Do not open either yet. After all installed, open the 8994 program, create a new system, choose simulated and keep the default device, hit ok and you are ready. Proceed down the left side to Tuning- A1F1Dac1, if you click that you will see the equalizer settings and curve. Here you can adjust the center freq, high and low pass filters and bandwidth of each. When you are satisfied , go to the View menu and choose registers. See the screen shot but the values you are interested in are circled, they correspond to the file in sys/devices/virtual/misc/voodoo_sound/headphone_eq_bands_values. They are in hex. In wolfson/boeffla they are in a different file but in decimal. Under the File/Preferences menu of wisce you can change the display to decimal so no need to hand convert. The gain must be set independently, so in the same folder sys/devices/virtual/misc/voodoo_sound, there will be files for gain of bands 1-5. Be gentle here, or you will get clipping. In fact I would make cuts in the parametric settings at least equal to your gains. If you use Neutron , you can set up a similar equalization curve, "normalize" the tracks to the curve and Neutron will set the preamp gain for each track individually. Then just disable Neutron's equalizer and the gain settings will still stick for the wolfson DAC changes. Make sure that you go into either boeffla or voodoo settings and enable the bass booster, or equalizer even if you don't want the extra bass. That enables the use of the settings. The changes may not survive a reboot and the equalization bands file will only show the changes if a headset is in the jack I use tasker to overwrite the files each reboot and have a different profile if I am using my Shure 535 with a microphone control vs playing to a speaker setup(3 band plug) Here is the result using RMAA including neutron as my original base. Happy tuning!

Max Pro M1 Audio Hardware - Hires Driver Support?
Morning one and all! I am strongly considering this phone probably just 4gb variant (don't game don't really mind camera much). I am an audio enthusiast so I have a request. For Android exists the Hires Audio driver designed to provide a better interface to many USB DAC/ AMPLIFIER and also quite a few internal audio chips; Extreamsd dot (the usual!) Is the place to find out more on this - both the android app, the driver itself, and somewhat hidden on there is a list of phones with known compatible INTERNAL silicon (which I hope we can add this phone to!) I want to find out if the audio chip Inside the Max Pro m1 is currently supported by the somewhat confusingly named USB Audio Player Pro. Installation of the trial and follow sin the instructions in the site above (sozzz @ cannot link yet ∆∆) wouldide us with the current answer. So, would someone kindly help me with this test? thanks! Hi-Fi patch for custom rom ?
Hi again i have seen a patch for axon 7 to use akm chip in custom roms. Is there a way to enable Hi-Fi sound in axon 7 mini's custom roms? Can we make a patch for it? Maybe we can port axon 7 patch for us but axon 7's chip is different from mini version.
It has already been proved that aokp and lineage use the hifi chip by default - no patch required

As a music producer and obviously a sound engineer this makes me laugh there is no point in playing back your music in such rates unless it was recorded in that state in the first place which I know for a fact it was not. ---------- Post added at 02:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:48 AM ---------- Open up a terminal and enter this Su And then either tinymix 826 LowPower tinymix 826 HiFi Each of these commands put the phone into the state of either using the external chip for sound or the internal chip on the motherboard try it out for yourself and you will hear that the default is hi-fi

Click to collapse It's not that I play files with that high sampling rate/bit depth. It's just that that's how I'm able to verify whether I'm on the Snapdragon DAC vs the AKM DAC (without checking system settings).
You use your ears to hear the difference in sound quality using each of these states and you can hear that hifi sounds much better as it uses the external chip.

To check sampling rate/bit, you need in terminal emulator enter this: dumpsys media.audio_flinger And search output with a string < Standby: no >. You will see parametrs youre music streame. Good luck!

I want to ask you about installing Dolby Atmos on the Axon 7 Mini (LineageOS 14.1); I know that you use AOKP. I also have Magisk installed and there is a module for Dolby Atmos but it's for the Axon 7. Will it work on the Mini? I think in previous posts you mentioned that there is another method for installing Dolby Atmos on the Axon 7 Mini. Thanks in advance. Microphone low-pass filter in some ROMs
Hi, Background: My current daily driver is LineageOS 18.1 by Ivan. I've got a smart thermometer that uses a 17 KHz sound carrier to send the measurement data to the companion app. However the app was not able to read (or even detect the presence of) the thermometer. Mic permission was enabled for the app, naturally. So I checked with a spectrum analyzer app (Spectroid) and an external tone sweep, and there seems to be a low-pass filter on the mic input (both internal and headset). The cutoff starts around 4 KHz and nothing gets through above 8 KHz. Then I tried other ROMs. PixelExperience [AOSP 12] behaves the same way, but on FloydQ V6.0 [10, non AOSP] the spectrogram is flat and the companion app works. My questions: Is this a known issue / feature? Is this an AOSP vs Samsung based ROM thing? If this is because of the missing proprietary blobs, is it directly caused by that or just a side effect of a (anti echo) workaround? Can it be disabled? Even if the voice quality becomes unusable. Thanks.
