[Q] Same but different WiFi issue plus... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey guys. This is my first post here. Checked all the troubleshooting threads and did not see this. Have seen the issue similar on other forums and sections, but my situation is a little different.
I have a rooted 16GB S4. I have been using the same wifi connection since August 2nd. The wifi on my phone, computer, TV, and Xbox have all been working this whole time. This afternoon I tried to check something on my computer and had no internet connection, but was using my phone. Thought the issue was my computer. Left. Came home. Computer is connected fine. My phone, my wife's iPhone 4s, TV, and Xbox will not connect to the network at all. So this situation is a bit different as I have been connected for 3 weeks and now wont work. I assume its not my phone because so many other devices dont work either. Not to mention it's both IOS and Android. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks a lot.
My plus is just something small. Yesterday my lock screen blanked out. I have my other lock screen pages, but my page with the date and time and all just randomly went blank and will not come back after reset.

If I read everything correctly then you don't have an issue with any of your devices. Chances are it's your wireless router. I would recommend replacing it to see if that fixes the issue. You can always buy one from Best Buy and take it back if that doesn't fix your issue.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that it may be the way your router is configured. (I doubt it's your ISP if something is working but other stuff isn't.) What kind of router do you have?

I think its a netgear. We are living in a downstairs apartment. All my devices now work. It was weird. First nothing was on. Then just the cimputer. We went to sleep and woke up and phones were working but not tv or xbox or computer. Now everything is fine again.... I did send an email to my landlord and ask her to unplug the router for about 30 seconds. She may have done that....

I definitely think it's the router. Netgear isn't the best around, and I have found that they do have problems from time to time. If you had access to the router yourself that would be the best way to troubleshoot the issues.

If things were working fine for some time then just started acting wonky, it wasn't anything your devices (S4, iPhone, computer or xbox) could've done, per se. Something had to have changed with the router - not that it's going bad or that it sucks, but something was altered. The smallest changes in networking can make the biggest difference. Don't just buy new devices and throw out the old when an issue arrives.
That's great its working now. For future reference, you should get your own in-apartment WiFi, like "Clear", cheap and works well in most areas, this would narrow down your possibilities of your internet not working properly on your S4 and other devices.

[UPDATE]Official Nexus one Wifi issue thread(every N1 owner should read)

Sorry I know this problem probably has been brought up many times. But here I just want to make a total one and collect all the feedbacks from N1 users regarding to the wifi sleep issue with N1.
Let's just make it simple: Every N1 owner PLEASE DO test out the wifi connection when your phone goes to sleep as there are MANY people suffering from this problem all over the world. Especially the later buyers since February this year, almost every phone is potential to this problem.
######################################################
Diagnosis:
1. Set the wifi sleep setting to "never" in the wifi advanced setting menu.
2. Turn on Last.fm app(or Pandora, but Last.fm is most effective and responsive one to test it out), leave the phone on wifi and turn off the phone screen or let it goes to sleep.
3. The symptom is the app will stop streaming shortly afterwards(with Pandora stops maybe after one song, for which I suggest everyone test it for at least 15 minutes). Also most likely you will stop getting any email notification or anything requires data connection. And you might not be able to ping your phone or the ping responses VERY slow as well.
######################################################
######################################################
Background:
This problem was recorded from earliest almost 6,7 months ago and has affected both AT&T and T-Mobile versions(with reports of the same issue on other versions sold outside US). So far, it's suspected that the problem mostly likely lies in the lower level architecture of the phone(either software or hardware) because the problem still exists even after people has replaced the stock ROM with the custom ROM. Another proof is that people get problem with brand new phone and also the replacement phone. Another note is the problem has been found both before FROYO update and after. At this moment, there's no official fix(some Google employee blatantly brushed the issue away and asked N1 users to get over it, check out the link below for original conversation) for this issue except a work around thanks to wifi fixer app developer.
######################################################
This issue is often times neglected by N1 users because usually people don't use the phone on wifi all the time or they simply switch between 3g and wifi. But for people who use wifi a lot or use VOIP, it could be a real deal breaker.
So here I just hope everybody could test your phone out and see if you have this issue or not. Please report how your result turns out in this thread. Also, for further and more detailed discussion and cases, please check this out:
http://www.google.com/support/forum...52&hl=en&fid=01a47ff5b0a92d5200048be07b6cb5c1
You are more than welcome to add your experience to the discussion above so hopefully it can wake google up.

UPDATE:
So Broadcom just released a wifi driver fix several days ago which may solve this issue. According to the record, phones with non-zero MAC address suffer from problem.
The driver has been incorporated into the latest Cyanogenmod(either RC or nightly build). People are reporting it fixes the problem while in some other cases, the problem still exists even after the fix, even for people who's MAC address starts with 00.
Last.fm works fine with the screen off here, always has done. I even turned off mobile data to be sure it's not switching over to that.
This is with the wifi set to sleep with the screen off (ie. the default setting).
i've been using wifi fixer and since i installed it, i haven't had a single wifi disconnect on my home network(it seems to be a network dependent issue as i never have issues on other networks)

yeah, the point here is that many phones have the wifi sleep policy issue(doesn't work).
Indeed, however mine does, so this thread will need both sides of the argument
No problems on my Nexus One, running latest CM 6 nightly build.
I bought it couple months ago from eBay, so I'm not sure which shipment it is from.
Only issue I'm having after upgrading to Froyo is that my phone won't connect to my home network by itself when in range.
I have to go into Wifi Buddy and manually connect. This never happened on 2.1, but magically started after the FRF50 update, and never fixed itself in the next couple of builds.

I have always had this same issue! Maybe its something to do with my home wifi? I am yet to test it on froyo.
I am mostly connected to wifi with no sleep issue.
I have kind of the same issue at home, I recently replaced my wireless router, I never had problems connecting to the old one it would just stop broadcasting constantly but my N1 would always connect automatically. With the new router my N1 keeps saying the connection is disabled and I have to connect manually. This never happens at work, it always connect automatically so it seems to have something to do with the router settings but I have no idea what.
No problems here. Last.FM works fine for me on WiFi when screen is off. I also get notifications. Running FroYo rooted with locked bootloader

i am having the same problem, when i go out of range from my wireless and then back in range, the n1 just says scanning and never re-connects.
that said, using a channel lower than 11 on my router did seem to help with the sleep issue.

sorta, i never had the issue on any network besides my home one
I've also been having the disconnect problem with my N1. Maybe it would help if people whose sleep policy is actually working could post what wifi router/AP/whatever they are using. Also, if possible the first for identifiers of their MAC address. I read on one of the Google posts someone with a MAC address starting with 38:E7 having problems. The MAC for my phone is the same. For what it's worth I'm using a D-Link DIR-655 router and a Speedtouch 716 v5 WL and am experiencing the disconnect on both.
I've had the issue with 2 N1 tested on 3 different routers. I've read that it is related to the low power mode the N1 uses while sleeping not playing nice with routers. Not all N1 show the problem, apparently only the most recent ones. I've called google support and was told google knows about the issue and is working on it, but I am a bit cynical and I'll believe it when I see a fix.
Wifi-fixer fixed my problem only after I disabled Sipdroid which was interfering with it.
Mac adress: 38:E7: D8
I'll post my router model later when I get home.

It's weird because most of the time I don't have this problem. My WiFi stays connected all night long to WiFi. But once in a while it does disconnect and switch to 3g. I think its certain routers, because I didn't have this problem for first 3 months on my old router, now it happens with my new router.
My phone never has trouble reconnecting back to WiFi. Everyday when I come home from work, as I walk up my driveway the phone has already automatically connected to WiFi. I've made sure about this one since I read this problem all over.
I bought my Nexus One directly from Google when it came out for AT&T. It certainly has the wifi issue and it is very annoying. My expectation is that the phone jump on my wifi network when in range as all of my other phones have done. Instead I have to manually engage the phone to get on wifi. SUCKS!
this is the biggest problem for me with my n1.
although the wifi does stay awake, it slows right down..
if i ping my phone, the response time increases when the phone is asleep, but doesnt time out.
if i ftp a file from my laptop to my phone, the speed drops from 1mb/sec to 100kbps/sec when the phone is asleep.
i have found the app "fix my wifi" solves the problem of waking the phone after a few hours of sleep and finding the wifi has failed. if only there was a way of getting the speed to stay the same.

[Q] Reboot router to connect to Wifi

I'm puzzled by the behavior of my phone. For probably a week at a time, I go to work, connect to a WIFI there, then come home, connect to a WIFI there. No problems at all.
Then it seems like after a week or so of 'being good' sometimes I'll wake up the phone and it will see the network, but will not connect to it, asks for passphrase repeatedly (WPA2-AES Cisco E3000 router) but just will not connect. I have found no way to trigger the phone to reconnect (and I refuse to do another hard reset because that is no solution at all).
The simple fix is to reboot the router. Presto, the phone will connect almost immediately.
I am willing to accept that maybe something is wrong with my router, although I have 3 laptops and a couple of IP cameras, and an Xbox that connect wirelessly all the time, and I never ever see this refusal to connect on any of those devices, and my wife's Blackberry will also connect whenever. So I'm thinking its my phone.
So for the experts out there, what is it about rebooting the router that fixes the problem?
I only recently learned how to get into the manufacturer's special app, so I'm going to pay attention to my IP address next time I have an issue, and see if it actually changes when I reboot after this problem occurs again.
Where does one discover how and what can be tweaked in the secret app? I'm cautious but not afraid....hey, I've edited the windows registry countless times on my PC and never toasted the OS yet! Does that count for something?
Add: I had this happen once at my work WIFI, using an ancient DLink router using WEP. At the time, I was trying out a bluetooth headset (Plantronics Backbeat), which worked, albeit, after I was done listening to the podcast, be darned if I didn't get into this refusal to connect thing, and unbeknownst to me, I was using the 3G data connection for what I thought was a wifi broadcast. That sucked 175 megs that day! I was a bit pissed about that. I have not used the Bluetooth since then.
Rebooting my router at work fixed the problem but I hate doing that, because I've got other equipment on that network that likes to be permanently connected.
the same happened to a frined of mine: interoperability issues with that model of router and the phone, changed the router and after everything worked perfectly, that sucks, but it is
Had a similar problem, and simply could not pinpoint the cause. Solution? I resetted my router to factory settings, and started to change all the settings from scratch to my desired settings. One thing that helped solve my problem was that I changed the default IP address used by the router (in my case, 192.168.0.1) as well as the IP range to something more ... random. Also, I limited the number of allowed IPs to 10 rather than the default 100...That helped. Never got a disconnect or problem connecting again. I had the same thing happen on my mother's iPhone and my brother's Galaxy S, and this solved it.

Wi-fi conections and my galaxy tab

Hi again, since my last problem, that my galaxy tab did not wanted to turn on, I got a refund and waited until the machine came to my country..... months later, I could buy it at walmart, and all went fine, I got a 16GB wi-fi/3G tablet and went to a friend's house to use it, wi-fi worked well, then I bought a router, and installed it in one of my houses, and all went fine, I could even use it 20m away, then I installed it in my actual house and first it came ok, I could connect it, and worked for several days, went away and used the 3G internet, and came back and used the wi-fi because it has better speed, and it started to don't work, so I reseted the router like 3 times, each time it didn't work, then I contacted a friend of mine that works installing routers for companies, and he configured mine so it had a better security and values he knows that would work better, and indeed the problem was solved... for a couple of days... now, it says connected and it does not charge the pages, or if I "forget" the network, and charge it again, internet works but it loads pages partially it does not load them completely. On my phone and laptop the internet always works, in the tablet that is the problem... so what could it be, or how could I fix it?
PD: this is really strange, because normally it happens either when I shut down the router (because it is right besides my bed and the computer (big desktop) makes noise) or when I leave the tablet in stanby for a day or so, I write this because now I just restarted the tab and internet worked as if anything had happened...
I was recently having problems with wifi also. Mine was connected to my network but I couldn't get on the internet. This happened after a few weeks of ownership with no issues. I found this article and it pertains to my issue, not sure if it will help you though. You do need a rooted device to be able to do this "fix". It worked for me though.
http://steve-shaffer.com/2011/02/samsung-galaxy-tab-wifi/
Ok thanks so to root it, is the method suggested in the article safe, or what could I loose with that procedure? meaning, do you know a trustfull procedure I could follow?
I had the same problem too recently...works well at my friend's place but not with my router...it seems that the tab works well with static ip and not with dynamic ip address with we people usually have...
Oh , just read that link...i was about to say the same...
There s another way...
Without root,
reset your router
go to your wifi settings
go to wifi channel
set the channel to 11 (6 or 4 works too)
these channels tend to workout the problem i heard...worth a try right...
You can try this before you root

[Q] LG G2 DLNA Issue

Hi
This is probably a long shot, but just wanted to check to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem.
Anyway, it took me a while to figure out but, when my phone connects to my home wireless network, it causes all other DLNA devices connected to the network to crash.
For example, I have two Netgear ReadyNAS devices, and use a Samsung smart TV which I use to access them (videos, music etc). With the phone connected, or connecting it to the wireless network, it will cause the TV to disconnect and make reconnection to the ReadyNAS device impossible without restarting the DLNA service on it. It will happen frequently for as long as the phone is connected.
I also have 3 Media Centre extender devices which connect to Media Centre PC to stream live tv, music etc. Connecting the phone to the network will immediately cause the extender to crash. Or, if the phone is already connected it will cause the extender to crash quite frequently where the only way to reconnect it to the main PC is to switch it off and on.
I can't find any setting on the phone to control this behaviour - noting that this happens even when the DLNA feature is off (accessed through settings->Share & Connect).
This has happened since the phone arrived at the beginning of October, it just took me a month to figure out that it was the phone causing all these issues.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I should clarify.
It's not that my phone causes other DLNA devices to crash when I'm trying to access them. I literally have to walk in through my front door and as soon as the phone connects to my wireless network, it'll crash any of the DLNA device switched on.
So, are you suggesting the app may solve that?
wireless router problem probably?
try to disconnect 1 or 2 devices from the network then re-connect your G2.
check if the same problem will happen again...
i've been using my G2 for a month now and it is always connected to my wireless network
but I haven't encountered any problem with the other DLNA connected devices...
Afraid not. It took me nearly a month to figure out what it was and in that time, I replaced my wireless router and components (including motherboard) of my PC - thinking the problem centered around the PC.
network crash

this just about sums up the situation i have and its spooky that it sounds like my own story except i got my isp to send me a new router after talking to technical and they saw the internet crashed and from my insistence that it was not a connection issue but it was the router dropping out and when talking to technical they asked me if there was any change to my network i did say i got a new phone but they dismissed this!.
running on my network:-
htc desire android
samsung google nexus android
smart tv
2 laptops
hard wired computer
samsung mobile
ocasional i phones (not guilty)
all of the above have lived in harmony on my network untill.......
even the hard wired pc loses internet but still visible on network discovered by plugging laptop via cable into router and then crashing network with phone.
the symptoms seem to be that it crashes the internet but the internal network still has some functionality, its like the firewall sets up a block and locks down internet traffic for a short while after a time it will come back on but the same thing happens again until i turn off wi fi on my phone that is only ten days old (bit smug it took me about 5 days to work out where the stuff hitting the fan came from!) but i have paid lip service to lg as they don't want to believe this is an issue with their phone and i did the factory reset only to waste some more time re loading my phone with wifi turned on.......
if you look at Samsung reports of this it is quite common on the s4 but again no one wants to take responsibility and the suggestions are it is to do with jelly bean os not quite being complete but Google wont admit to that. just be glad you haven't got an s3 with the new os update Samsung stopped that after about a week as it killed everything!
great phone but useless without wifi.
come on google and lg sort the crap out for the consumers or we will all get the hump and buy bloody apples

I have the same exact problem, got to change router but nothing works, any solution yet?
I never found any workaround for the problem. I was stuck using my data connection while at home if I used any of the devices.
That was until I had an OTA update entitled 'Internet' from LG last week.
Everything now works, with no issues.
Going on a whim here... but try TKIP only, no AES.
I had the same issue when I got my g2 last week. I tried a number of solutions suggested on various threads however the problem was only resolved by upgrading my Netgear modem/ routers firmware. I have had no issues since.

Just received the OTA kitkat update and the issue is back.
Unfortunately, I'm with Sky and stuck with an older version of the Sky hub which doesn't have a TKIP only option. Save forking out money to buy a new hub from them with no idea if the issue will go away or not, back to the drawing board...

Evening Yallll - Wifi question for yas!!!

OK so device is a - LG D80210B - 16GB - UK - EE - UNLOCKED - ROOTED - StockMOD rom with update package. 4.5gb storage space left.
2nd device is a - HTC ONE 16gb - STOCK - NO ROOT
3rd device is a - SAMSUNG RV510 Laptop.
Im on EE uk network on both phones with EE ADSL Broadband at both mine and my partners house.
Now.... One would assume everything from the same company would be simple... If only that was the case! haha.:silly:
Now which ever property I visit within 15 - 20 minutes of being on the Wi-Fi the LG G2 kicks everybody out of the router, all at the same time. No one can access the network until one of 2 things happens... either I disconnect for 15mins plus or the router gets restarted nothing else will bring back the internet. Note - This does NOT happen when I am not present and surfing can be achieved all day on any device.
So ive spoken to the useless turds at EE technical support on the phone about 30 x they have absolutely no idea what the issue is but its definitely only related to my device. There suggestion is to cancel and go back to sky (which worked flawlessly previously to EE being installed). this is an option but it means another month with no internet at all and I also get an additional 10GB of 4GEE data on my phone allowance if I have there broadband so it would be beneficial to keep it.
Things ive tried;
Every different setting under the sun.
Different encryption.
Static IP addresses.
DCHP settings.
the brightbox will only broadcast internet on 2.4ghz as well if it helps anyone diagnose.
Using a known router as an access point to see if that solves the issue - again perfect until I log on.
Tech support.
Search the net and forums on here.
Spoken to a networking wizard mate of mine.
The problem seems to lie in the LG G2 and/or Jellybean firmware currently installed and installed as stock as the fault is not present when I log off the Wi-Fi...
So..... I decided to try a different rom, the Slim Kat rom
The Wi-Fi works flawlessly for me and everyone else however the rom is just too unstable at the moment to be a daily driver. It doesn't have the complete knock on knock off features and I don't really like the look I much prefer the stock rom as well as some of the games I play just will not work.
Now ive had and been flashing smartphones for about 8 yrs with the help of you lot on here leedroid especially was one of my faves so im not a novice or anything im just lost for what else to do or try????
Has anyone else experienced anything similar?! I would send it away to see if its a hardware fault but as it works perfectly on kitkat I assume its got to be some kind of bug in jellybean.
OR ive changed something that's ****** it up.
I would really appreciate any imput at all because I have a phone I cant use at my partners house or at home ...
Cheers brett
Just to add it also does it when Im on my own i.e. just the phone.
bump for today.... this is really breaking me now as no one can use the wifi for longer then 15 minutes lol
So theres not one single person that has even the faintest idea of what my issue may be?
Someone had this issue before, read about it. A router update fixed their issue. If setting device static, the router also needs to be configured to hold it, try this with all devices and lock local IP's. Next, leave a device off and see if it gets kicked. The G2 seems a bit picky with routers... On the Comcast Technicolor, it won't push past 3.5 dl, but max up. Some old drt firmware has problems as well.

Thanks for the reply dude...
Yeah tried to update it but its telling me its on the most recent software even though its date is 2010. Called tech support they say it up to date.
I can set the IP in the DHCP section of the router but I cannot for one second find out how to do it on the phone... do you know?
I used DHCP to assign a static IP to both phones, the Nintendo wii, the sky box and the laptop, so they always pick up that IP from the router without fail. I also set the DHCP settings so that it does not conflict with any of the locked IP's just incase - so DHCP is from 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.99
Its not a router problem as much as id like to blame it on that because I used my old known working sky router as an access point to connect to as well and that make absolutely no difference apart from slow it down because it doesn't support "N" mode.
Its an EE brightbox router - piece of *****
I can leave the other 4 devices connected to the router 24/7 with no issue until I connect the LG G2. Then all devices are booted at the same time usually 15-20 mins sometimes less. never more. it also only occurs when just the LG is connected. Like now my phone is stuck at recovery ATM (another problem im trying to solve) and the internet hasn't dropped once my partner is on it and so is the sky box so its DEFO my phone that's doing the bad.
That's ODD that isn't it my up and downstream in the router are both above 10meg although the attenuation and line noise keep changing.
cheers for the input
In wifi menu of phone, hold on connection and select modify. Check show advanced options, chose static, input data(along with password again). Reboot phone. After you fix it of course.

Sets static for phone. Has to be set on both router and phone. I just found out the G2 has some issue with AES on certain routers. Try TKP only. I had to do this with my other Technicolor. Odd thing is AES works fine on the SB 6141. Lost on that one.
Had exactly the same issue with my shiny new G2. Using a Netgear modem/Router. I upgraded the firmware and that seems to have fixed it. It was killing the Router within about a minute of use. Now running 25 minutes without any drops. Fingers crossed it's permanent.
