Having just acquired a new phone from eBay (UK), I cannot find any recommendation of formatting the sdcard which arrived unformatted. Can anyone help or point me to a reference?
Thank you.
Usually you can just format them as FAT, or you can use the dedicated SD formatter utility from here:

Hi all,
To make a long story short:
I figured out that i had to install a ext2/3 or 4 part on my SD card to install imilka's GB rom.
I launced Minitool Partition Wizard and followed a video on youtube with instructions. I created a FAT32 partition and a ext3 partition and pressed "apply"
Then the program freezed at 33%... Couldn't do anything else then close it.
From that moment, i can't mount my SD card anywhere... not on my pc, laptop and not on my Desire HD... it doesn't show up anywhere
This is my mom's HD2, so i'm afraid that i ruined her SD card...
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!
Possible Fix
Hello 1st of all get a SD adapter and plug it in to your pc / plug your SD card / use this tool to format the SD card (it will erase all partitions) : SDFormatterv3.0.zip/ then create the partition you want using CWM recovery ( easiest way IMPO ) .
thanks for your reply, but the drive doesn't show up when i use the mass storage function in magdlr... do i really need a USB reader? Because i dont really have one here.
yes you probably need to get an SD adapter ( its really cheap and it usually comes with the SD card when you buy it ) . If its not mounting through recovery and i guess u already tried it in another cell phone (any brand) then you need the SD adapter.

It's fixed now
I could format it in CWM (i just formatted everything i could) and then put the card in my Desire HD which loaded it, but I couldn't use it. Then I used your program and the card showed up, formatted and i made partitions
thanks for your help!
So some of us have already gotten an SDXC 64GB card to work in our SD slot as posted at the Lenovo forums. Everyone's mileage seems to vary on the best method for this, I just wanted to share the way that I was able to do it after much trial and error, in a pretty clear and concise way.
Basically, just as with USB drives, it all comes down to formatting any external storage in FAT32 for the TPT to read it. The trick is getting an SDXC card into FAT32, and readable by the Thinkpad Tablet. If it's not done right, the tablet will just sit on "Preparing SD Card" forever. I've tried all kinds of PC HDD and Flash card tools to do this, and the one that finally worked was Easeus Partition Master Home Edition which is a free version (download.cnet.com/Easeus-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html)
I formatted the card with EaseUS and TPT recognized it right away, showing 61.84GB capacity
Here's how: First be careful to click only the SD card you want to format in the list of drives or you could format a hard drive by mistake (check your drive letter!). There may be another small unlabeled partition on the card, don't worry about that. Click Format Partition (on the left), select file system FAT32, click OK, and then click Apply (big check mark at top of main UI). (If the SD card doesn't appear in the list, you may need to use the SDFormatter first, details below).
BTW, the tool to get your SDXC back to its original state (if things get too screwed up or you need to return it) is the official SDFormatter (sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/). You may also need to run this on the card first before using EaseUS if you've been mucking around with it and EaseUS does not pick it up.
Hope this saves some headaches.
(Sorry for the truncated URLs, I'm a new poster though I've been around XDA for years, so the system won't let me post proper links...that's what I get for trying to be helpful...)

Ah, I forgot to mention, the SD card I am using is the Komputerbay SDXC 64GB, purchased on Amazon.
I just bought a new card because I believe my old one bit the dust. I would really like this card to be formatted to NTFS as opposed to FAT32. A lot of the media files I use are too big for FAT32. Can I just format the card in my pc first thing, then put it in the tablet? I see that people tend to use Flash Format in the settings, but I would guess that just sticks it back to FAT32.
I tried to format my sd card last night using Gparted (linux) and it will not complete the format. Through some web searching, the common answer to that is that your SD card is a goner. At this point, that card will not format, and will not be recognized by the tablet.
I ordered a new one, and would hope that I can just immediately format it. I know the tablet can read ntfs, because my usb drive is that format and it will read it.
Thoughts?
I just don't want to ruin a brand new sd card. Thanks.

You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition. http://download.cnet.com/MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Home-Edition/3000-2094_4-10962200.html

Thanks for your response. I will check that software out. However, I am just wondering if it will cause a problem if I do reformat the sd card, before using it. I think I will use gparted for formatting, it is a good tool on my linux box.
Based on your response I would guess you are saying that it is ok to format the sd card ahead of time. Right?
It's definitely OK to format an SD card before being used. What errors does GParted give you? It might also be worth trying to format it to EXT4, unless you plan to be able to read it outside of Android/Linux.
Sorry but I am new here and have been looking threw as many posts as I can to try to find out if there is a fix for the Infamous ROM not recognizing a 64gb SD card? I have seen posts on the same topic in which I am posting on now with no answer to a fix but since I'm a new member and need to have at least 10 posts before I am able to post on the developers page I am posting here. sorry if this is the wrong area but I'm a noob and didn't know where else to go.
Thank you for your time on this matter, it is just very frustrating to be able to load such a great rom and not have the potential of utilizing a 64gb sd card.
You probably have the card formated as ex fat. You can either flash a kernel that supports ex fat or you can put the card in your computer and format is as fat32. My rom recognized it but I had to reformat as fat32 in order to get a couple 3rd party apps to see it.

I have a ScanDisk Ultra microSDHC 64gb card and when I go to format it, it doesn't give me the option to do fat32 only ntfs and ex fat. Is there another way to format besides going to windows explorer and right click format?
I used a free program called EaseUS Partition Master to format my Sandisk Ultra 64GB for my Galaxy S4. It was quick and easy to reformat from exFAT to Fat32. Hope this helps.
Hi,
I got a Galaxy Y from a friend and I was trying to MOD it. I discovered that the internal SD is not available... and no way to get it back. I tried to wipe data, hard reset, stock firmware upload with ODIN but no way to get the internal SD back. I tried ADB in order to try to push the ZIP files in a ROM folder but of course no permissions as it's not rooted.
So, no way to root my mobile without copying the files to the SD?
Thanks in advance
Joe
I dont know what you mean by internal sd - galaxy y 5360/6102 doesnt have internal sd - it uses a mico sd card to which you will find the slot if you take the cover off and look on the right hand side of the phone
place any files you want on the sd card either via card reader or usb cable
please note that questions should be asked in the question and answer section and NOT the general section

Thanks Marcus,
I did not know the mobile had no internal SD.
That's the kind of information that saves a lots of time and work!
Thanks again.

Ok,
I tried to use a Miscro SD on the GT-S5360 but there was no way to have it acccepted by the phone.
I formatted the Micro SD (Sandisk 2G) in many ways (full formatting) and it was mounted OK with all my other phones (Galaxy S, LG L5II, Huawei) but not for the Galaxy Y. I tried to format the card with the other Samsung too but it did not work..
I've read a lot around about the "blank SD" issue on many mobiles and tried some of the suggested tricks but with no luck.
So, assuming there is no way to have a MicroSD installed on the phone, I resume the original question:
- Is there any way to root the GT-S5630 without an SD card?
Thanks in advance
Joe
well unless your sd card slot is damaged there should be no reason why it shouldnt work
the sd card needs to be formatted in fat32
there best way to do it is to inset your sd card into your phone
goto phone settings
storage
unmount sd card (sd must be unmounted before you can format it)
format sd card
you can also format it via your pc using a card reader as long as its fat32 but its best to format it using the phone or format it again using the phone as sometimes cwm may have problems mounting the sd card if you use something else to format it
You might find universal root tools via google but the quickest most simple way is just to use a root zip file and flash it in recovery or cwm

Thanks Marcus, your replies are very quick .
I tried formatting the SD card FAT32 with different Allocation unit sizes, always full formatting, never quick.
The SD card is recognized as BLANK SD CARD (or unsupported filesystem) when inserted with the phone ON. The same occurs when I switch ON the phone with the SD card alredy inserted. The card is never mounted
The internal formatting functionality of the phone seems to be not working at all. The function FORMAT SD CARD is enabled but when launched it lasts just few seconds and nothing happens (the card is not mounted neither automatically nor by hand).
There could be some compatibility issues between the card and the phone and it could be worth to buy another SD to test the phone card reader again, but I'm not confident it will work.
Phone specs
Android Version: 2.3.6
Baseband: S5360XXMC2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.7
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XXMI1

allocation unit size is I think 16 kilobytes but just select default - quick format is fine if the card is not damaged
you can try using mini tool to delete the partition on the sd card and create a new one and format it to fat32
you can then try reformatting it on your phone after

Thanks for your help Marcus,
I tried MiniTool, with both FAT and FAT32 (the card is a 2GB card) but the result is still the same: BLANK SD CARD.
I will try to buy a new one tomorrow and see if it makes any difference...
Thanks again

Ok I got a new MicroSD today and everything seems to work fine.
Thanks again Marcus.
