This method requires ROOT, but will allow you to backup all settings quickly and easily for a full restore to a different build. This is handy when running Android on a Windows Mobile device such as the HD2, since it allows us to easily switch to one of the many builds that come out weekly. However, this method can be applied to any Android device.
Ops, if you’d rather move this thread to a general Android discussion, no problem. I just thought it was pertinent here given all the ROM changing people are doing.
It can back up everything, from home screen widget positions to SMS messages. If you’re using keyboards like SwiftKey, it will even save your learned DB.
Backup:
Acquire Titanium Backup” from the Market
The first time you run the program, hit the “Problems?” button. This will download the latest version of Busybox, a set of command line utilities used to backup data.
Tap “Backup/Restore”
Press the “Menu” button (hard button)
Choose “Batch”
Press “Run” next to “Backup all user apps + system data”
Leave everything selected on this screen. We will selectively choose what to restore in our new build. Having everything backed up means you won’t miss anything.
Ensure “Kill active apps” is selected
Press “Run the batch operation”
While this is running, tap the screen every now and again to ensure your phone doesn’t time out. (just to be safe for any auto-killers that may be running)
Reboot your phone
Restore (after switching builds):
Note: For those running on a WM device, you can download the APK for Titanium Backup here and place it in your AndroidApps folder for it to be accessible on your first boot.
Skip as much of your new Android Setup screens as possible. No need to waste time here when it will be restored with Titanium.
Go into settings and set up your Google Account.
After adding the account, set it to NOT sync.
Do this BEFORE entering the Market, or the syncing will happen automatically. The reason for doing this is that you’re going to overwrite it all with Titanium data anyway, so why waste the resources and time.
Go into “Settings -=> Applications” and check “Unknown Sources”
Re-acquire Titanium Backup (unless you had the APK in your AndroidApps folder) and hit the “Problems?” button to install in your new build.
Tap “Backup/Restore”
Press the “Menu” button (hard button)
Choose “Batch”
Press “Run” next to “Restore missing apps + all system data”
If you are restoring the exact same Build:
Click “Select All”
Choose “App+Data”
If you are restoring a different Build or upgrading to a new version of a Build:
Click “Deselect All”
Choose “App+Data”
Select all Green items (These are your settings)
Select all Crossed out items (These are the apps not included in your build)
Select any other items you know are the same within your build, and that you want to restore settings for
Press “Run the batch operation”
For every application that the install prompt comes up for, hit “Install” and then “Done.”
Reboot your phone
On next boot, if you get “Problem Loading Gadget” on some widgets, you will have to remove them from the home screen and re-add them manually. This has only occurred a couple of times for me, usually things go smooth.

I only mentioned this app like 100 times lol. Good tut though for the noobs. I think the app is well worth the donation to the dev. I have used this on all my android phone cause im a flash junkie and it never fails me. Also the donate version is fully automated, meaning you dont have to click install on each app.

i remember u did mention it 1000 and 1 times .....it is one of the must have apps when using this port of hd2

what's the fastest way to get Titanium back on the new build?
i tried putting the titanium apk in the androidapps folder before booting android. even if it auto installed, it always got a forced closed error.
i had to put a file manager apk into the androidapps folder to have it installed while booting, then in android, browse for titanium apk then install it. this way, titanium works fine.
how do u guys do it?
Hope all Android chef can cook in the Titanium backup into their rom, so that we can start restore the application and setting right after 'flashing' new rom.

Simply put TitaniumBackup.apk to AndroidApps folder in the same location as haret.exe and TitaniumBackup will be available after first run.
Where can I find Titanium backup.APK ?

I've used this way:
Backup software used: MyBackup Pro.
1. Check your phone book and move all contacts to your Google account. (This means - if contact shows Phone in Account field you should move it). Enable sync. Wait for sync to complete.
2. Do a Nandriod backup.
3. Do a check restore of Nandroid backup
4. Check if your preffered apps supports internal backup/restore - can be named import/export. Dolphin HD, Apps/Folder organizer, most launchers have it. Do a backup in them.
5. MyBackup - Do full Applications backup (APKs+Data)
6. MyBackup - Do full Data backup (i didn't backup contacts, system settings and android home)
7. Open zipped GingerBread (2.3b2) ROM and put in system/app your preffered APKs for file browsing and MyBackup.
8. Upgrade ROM.
9. Add your Google account in Settings. After sync all your contacts will be in place.
10. MyBackup - Restore Data (again, i didn't restore system settings, etc. Actually i needed only SMS and Call logs)
11. Reboot device.
12. MyBackup - Restore Applications (APKs ONLY!)
13. Reboot device. All databases for apps will be restored in clean state in boot process.
14. Restore settings in apps, that supports internal backup/restore
15. MyBackup - Restore favorite Applictions (DATA ONLY! Exclude apps in p.14)
16. Just in case - reboot again.
Well, it worked for me.
I'm not promoting MyBackup, but IMHO it's much simpler for end user than Titanium.
DISCLAIMER : This guide assumes that you already know how to flash a custom ROM. Also, these instructions work well on my Desire HD running ICS. They should ideally work on any device/ROM/Recovery combination, just that you may have to figure out the system settings/apps that correspond to the ones that I'm referring to. But remember that if you choose to follow these steps, you are doing it at your own risk, and you assume any and all potential consequences, including (but not limited to) loss of data, corrupting your sdcard, bricking your device, physical damage to your phone or self, and/or loss of bladder control.
WARNING : Following this guide may lead to ORD, or worsen your condition of ORD.
When you flash a custom ROM, a full wipe is always recommended. And it definitely is a stressful process, especially if you like to try out a lot of different ROMs. I now follow a method which I find is quite reliable, not as stressful and is fast, so I thought i should share it. I must warn you though, that this is quite an organized approach, so it will require patience from your part to set it up. But I assure you, once you've done it, your ROM wiping and flashing process becomes much easier
I'm going to detail this out in both offline and online methods. With the "Offline(OFF)" method, you will not require an Internet connection to restore all your data. Everything is backed up using Titanium Backup. With the "Online(ON)" method, part of your data will be restored from the amazing "Cloud"
Most of this guide is common to both methods, so I've highlighted the specific methods accordingly. If you're following the offline(OFF) steps, then you dont need to follow the online(ON) steps, and vice versa
APPS YOU'LL NEED
1) Titanium Backup - The free version will serve the purposes of this guide, but its just easier and faster to restore using the Pro version. The Pro version doesnt ask you to tap "Install" every time you restore an app. And if you forget to backup something, you can retrieve it from your Nandroid Backup(provided you remembered to do that ).
2) ES File Explorer - This app allows you to backup an app to the sdcard. Any other file manager/app that can do the same thing will work too..
(ON) 3) SMS Backup+ - This app allows you to backup all your call logs and sms/mms to your Gmail account.
INITIAL SETUP
1) Open Titanium Backup
2) Choose Menu->Filters
3) Tap the "Create Label" button, name your label, and then tap the "Add/Remove elements" button to pick which apps this label will be assigned to.
I have an "Important" label - for apps that I absolutely need on every flash, an "Extras" label - for more occasionally used apps, and a "Games" label. Make sure you dont add any system settings like Accounts, Application widgets, Bluetooth Pairings etc. to any of these labels. We will be handling them separately.
4) Choose Menu->Preferences and enable Auto-sync TB settings
(ON) 5) Now open SMS Backup+
(ON) 6) Set it up to backup your call logs, sms and mms to your Gmail account. You can assign labels to each of them so that they are neatly categorized in your GMail. You can also setup auto-backup for convenience.
1ST BACKUP
1) Open Titanium Backup
2) Choose Menu->Filters, scroll down, select all your labels and tap Apply.
3) Choose Menu->Batch->Backup all user apps + system data.
You'll need to backup system settings separately -
4) Choose Menu->Filters, and in Filter by type, choose System
5) Scroll down and make sure none of your custom labels are selected and then tap Apply.
6) Backup the following, these are the ones important to me, you may want to add more to this -
i) Accounts
ii) Application Widgets - Widgets placed on the homescreen of your favorite launcher.
(OFF) iii) Calendar Storage
(OFF) iv) Contacts Storage - Your contacts and call logs.
(OFF) v) Phone/Messaging Storage - Your sms/mms
vi) Settings Storage - Be careful when you restore this. For eg: its not a good idea to restore CM9 settings to an AOKP ROM or vice versa. This is best used when you know exactly what you are doing. Also, a lot of differences between ROMs will probably be the fact that it provides some new customization options in the settings. So restoring this doesnt make sense unless you know for sure that they are the same. Handle with care.
vii) User Dictionary
viii) Wi Fi Access Points
(OFF) Now you need to backup Titanium Backup itself, since thats the first app you will want to install, after a ROM flash.
(OFF) 8) Open ES File Explorer,
(OFF) 9) Choose Menu->Manager->App Manager.
(OFF) 10) Press and hold Titanium Backup and then choose Backup(the apk will be saved in /sdcard/backups/apps)
(ON) 11) Now open SMS Backup+ and tap Backup
Thats it !! You're all set now !

Now before you flash any new ROM, just follow these steps.
BACKUP
1) Open Titanium Backup, make sure none of your filters are selected, then choose Menu->Batch->Redo backups for modified data
(OFF) 2) You can optionally backup Titanium Backup's apk again using ES File Explorer. This is only to ensure that when you install it in the new ROM, you have the latest version
3) Take a Nandroid Backup if you wish to(recommended).
Perform a full wipe, flash the new ROM, and reboot.
When the startup wizard pops up -
(OFF) Skip the sign in to Google part, but complete the wizard.
(ON) Sign in using your Google account, and complete the wizard.
RESTORE
(OFF) 1) Open the File Manager that came with the ROM, and go into backups/apps(or wherever you saved your apk) and tap on the Titanium Backup apk to install it
(ON) 1) Open Play Store, and download Titanium Backup
2) Open Titanium Backup, and go to Backup/Restore
3) Choose Menu->Filters, scroll down, select your label("Important") and hit Apply.
4) If any of your "Important" apps are already installed, tap it and choose Restore->Data Only.
5) After that Menu->Batch->Restore missing apps with data
6) Deselect the apps that you dont need and tap "Run the batch operation"
7) You can repeat steps 3,4,5 and 6 for all your labels now or at a later time.
(OFF) Before proceeding, you need to make sure that all the apps that were added to the Accounts & Sync section in the previous ROM, are now installed in the current ROM. Apps like Google+, Facebook, HaxSync, LinkedIn, Twitter, Whatsapp etc. This is because we are about to restore the Accounts, and these apps need to be there if you want their "Accounts" to get restored correctly. Also, when we eventually restore Contacts, the restoration will be more complete if the accounts related to those contacts already exist. So we need to set this up beforehand.
This is where you start restoring System data. Now you need to be careful with this. ROMs that are completely different from each other may start acting buggy if you restore this data. I would suggest not doing this across different versions of Android. And if you know that the 2 ROMs are from different bases then you should definitely pick what you're restoring here.
8) Choose Menu->Filters.
9) In Filter by status, choose Backed up
10) In Filter by Type, choose System and hit Apply
11) And then Menu->Batch->Restore all system data. Now before you run the operation, deselect Contacts Storage. If your new ROM is very different from your old one, then deselect Settings Storage too. If you see anything else that you feel may not be compatible, deselect those too.
12) Tap "Run the batch operation"
13) Reboot(or Hot Reboot)
(OFF) 14) Now open Titanium Backup, Backup/Restore, tap Contacts Storage and restore Data Only
(OFF) 15) Reboot(or Hot Reboot)
(ON) 14) By now, your Calendar and contacts should have gotten sync'ed automatically. Just add other accounts to your Settings->Accounts&Sync section, and the rest of your data should get sync'ed up
(ON) 15) Open SMS Backup+ and Restore your call logs and sms/mms.

I use MyBackup pro myself for apps and data. Does the same thing imo. But also does a great job of everything else. Sms, bookmarks, dictionary, ect ect all in one application

Guys when I was on Sense roms I was able to restore my syncs accounts and all my emails accounts with Titanium... but since I'm on ICS, no matter what I do, I can't seem to restore those two things....
I restore data from Accounts (something backed up from TB itself) and data from Email but no go...
Anyone?
Restoring Accounts has worked for me on ICS. There are 2 things you need to do.
1)Before restoring, make sure all the apps needed for those sync accounts are already installed/restored. For eg: Facebook, Google+, Whatsapp, HaxSync, etc...
2) After restoring Accounts, reboot/hot reboot your phone.

Normal sync accounts, ie FB Twitter Google etc, I also can restore...
The problem is restoring email and exchange accounts... no matter what I do, cannot seem to restore them... they don't appear on the sync accounts nor inside the email app...And of course, I reboot the phone...
I guess the problem is probably from Titanium...
Too bad that the support for the TB is crappy as hell...

I got a chance to test this out today, and it worked.
1) Restore Accounts. reboot
2) Restore Email app - Data only.
Assuming exchange accounts would work the same way.

I'm sure you'll find other "how to backup" topics, but I've not found one as in-depth as this one. This is just the way I feel is the easiest to do it, specially because I like to flash ROMs a lot, and am very particular about my data. If that is the case, this is a really good way to do it.

After restore the apps that should auto launch after reboot only start auto launch after I open them once. After that everything runs smoothly. Is there any option I'm missing in order to prevent having to open this apps one by one?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking about the app defaults? Like say of you have 2 browser apps and you set one of them as the default, you want that to be restored? I'm not sure how :-(

Nope that's not the question. For example tasker or accuweather when i restore them they will only start working on the background after i open each of them manually first.
That's a good point. I'm not sure where the "start at boot" data is stored. SystemUI maybe? Something to try for my next ROM flash

Sorry i havent tested this out yet, but if it is in the system settings or SystemUI, I wouldn't recommend restoring it, since most ROMs differ from each other in these areas. It might just screw things up.
Will let you know once I find out.

I dont know the reason. But when you reboot the second time, the app automatically starts.

Hey guys!
I saw Modaco's toggler for the HTC One and the S4 to switch between google play edition and touchwiz and i said "hey....thats pretty cool"
So i made a tasker project that does something similar, and the main objective is to allow you to toggle between two different Rom's via Nandroid backups.
Obviously this has its plus's and minus's, but hey it works! Ill post a video with a demo and instructions.
i like aosp for my personal use. But when i go to a party the camera on touch wiz is muuuuch better, and when i go to class, touch wiz has indispensable features. So i made this to not have to compromise.
I used this to fix my GPS on CM10.1 by toggling to my TW rom, getting a lock then toggling back to CM10.1, and it works! wheras before it didnt. of course.
Its intended to be a tool that just sits there till you need it. And it's nice to be able to switch roms whenever i get bored of the current one.
So first, lets get the requirements out of the way:
REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have an external SD card! (if you want me to make one for internal only, let me know!)
2. You must have these things on BOTH Nandroid Backups so do these step by step if youre installing a new rom:
a. Tasker (duuuh)
b. Secure Settings, Install helper! (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intangibleobject.securesettings.plugin)
c. Busybox (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox)
d. Flash Onandroid Tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620255)
or you can get Obackup tool from the playstore and install the script from there. its probably easier.

3. Tasker, secure settings, and busybox must have root access.
You can go to your supersu app or the supersu option at the bottom of settings (if youre on AOSP) and check it.
Now we can start setting it up! Its not difficult, it just takes a bit of time to let android do its thing..
SET-UP
FIRST MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM AND STORE IT ON YOUR COMPUTER!!! not on your phone, just in case.
1.
If youre on a TouchWiz Rom:
Put the XML on your SdCard (internal or external)
Open tasker
Press menu / Preferences / make sure begginer mode is unchecked
long press the Home button on the bottom left, its a picture of a house.
Press import
Navigate to the XML file on your phone and import.
Now go to your homescreen
add a 1x1 tasker widget to your homescreen (or you can export the project as an app by long pressing it / export / export as app)
Find "TW's Rom toggle" in the list, press it, press the back button on your phone.
Go to helium and backup all the things you may want (SMS, user dictionary, tasker, so on and so forth)
Press the widget, and press "Nandroid Backup"
If youre on an AOSP Rom:
Put the XML on your SdCard (internal or external)
Open tasker
Press menu / Preferences / make sure begginer mode is unchecked

Press import

Go back to Step 1.
AWESOME!
So now you have a button on your phone that allows you to do backups and restores back and forth between two roms!
Keep in mind that the first backup can take a while...especially on touchwiz. but afterwards it goes much faster!
You have to do a helium backup before you switch and a restore after you switch to sort of semi-kind of keep the data pool shared...im going to see if i can remedy that somehow..
I just set up helium to do backups of certain apps every few hours ia the schedule function so that makes it easier.

Just as a heads up, you can easily use one or more of these profiles to automate nandroid backups. The backup profiles will save the nandroid to your extSdCard and replace the previous one.
If anyone has an idea of how to deal with app data between TW and AOSP please let me know!

Ok friend here posting some steps to clean Install ROM and how to keep device ready to clean install ROM with minimal risk of loosing data with keeping data restore handy.
I have devided this guide in Three sctions.
If you are first time flashing custom ROM then first part of this guide is not much helpful to you. Move to section 2 (installing ROM) as well read post#2

Here for this I do prefer titanium with schedule backup to keep my data protected on daily basis and describing below how do I prefer to manage it.
Ok let's start with schedule backup with titanium. This step will secure you to keep your data backup everyday without your interference.
- Install Titanium backup from play store (features mentioned here best managed with Pro version only)
- Now open titanium application and select click to edit filter as shown in screenshot below

-Now give this filter a desired label like here i gave data only in below screenshot. After this select add/remove elements in same screen. This is very inportnt step and you have to decide what elements you requires to backup daily. In my case giving you some examples like
contact storage ( look for contac storage green color to make contact backup), Messages (yellow colored) to make backup of SMS. like this. You can select your desired application data to make backup according your needs. But I strongly recommend to make backup od these two only from system application part. Though another important app is Launcher which can helpful to restore your launcher setting (Homescreen) for that you need to select TouchWiz home (red color). Also note that when you restore red color backup, select only to restore data only. we will discuss again in restoring section. Ok you can also select third party elements which changes data frequently. in my case I don't use stock launcher so selecting third party launcher so whenever i do change my homescreen setting, i need not to worry about it. Anyway it's enough to make clear what you have to select here is only application which data frequently get changes.
Once you finish this setup you will see your filter in nect screen
-Now come to main screen and select Schedule. See image below
-Now here you can see two pre defined rule here on ths page. see image below
-Select first rule by tapping on edit on first rule. Now next screen is very important and you will find three tables. Here in below screenshot as I shown select first tab to "Backup new user app and New version" This will ake backup of all user app which backup is not present. Also it will make re backup if you update application version.
second tab is keep no filtering so all user app will backup and third tab should setup to 'Any' so it can make backup without any power condition.
Also in lower part select desired day and time when to make backup. You can select daily or on selected day. I prefer to do during our sleeping time so it can do silently.
-Now click on edit button of second rule. This is for backup of all app and data for which you have created lebel.
Now on first table select 'All user App + System data" and in next table (filter) select label which you have created earlier. So this will make backup of only stuff which you have selected in add/removal elements while creating label. Also recommended to keep 'Any' under power condition of third table.
Same as before here defined your prefered time to make backup. Keep considerable time between first and second rule so app will remain free at time od backup of second rule.
-Ok most of setup is now finished and select menu key - preference from titanium app and Check mark 'Auto-Sync TB setting' This will save setting on SD card and when you install Titanium next time all above made setting will be retrived autometically.
-I prefer to keep titanium backup folder on Ext SD because many times you may needs to wipe IntSD too. Also prefereable to make periodic manual backup of titanium backup folder to PC from Ext SD card. you can set loaction from Menu - preernce - Backup folder location.
-also recommended to keep multiple copy of backup by selecting Number of backup under menu-preference. This is important when one backup failed then old to that backup may be useful
So this is all about keep device ready to make backup of your device anytime on daily basis. Though you can manually run scheduled backup by selecting 'RUN' in schedule-rule just before flashing ROM to assure latest settings are being backup already.
2.Flashing ROM
1.Flash your desired CWM/TWRP if you are still on stock recovery. - READ POST #2 FOR DETAIL ABOUT FLASHING RECOVERY.
Note that your device not required to be rooted to flash custom ROM. Just having CWM/TWRP (what is recommended by your ROM developer)
2.Download and copy ROM file to your SD card (Int/Ext)
(Here I am showing example of Philz recovery and some option may be different in case of you are using other recovery)
3.Reboot to recovery and select wipe data (for clean installation) (see image)
4.Select Install zip and then select zip from SD (where you copied) (see image)
5.Now wait here and don't immediately confirm by pressing 'yes' but wait till it finish md5 check. (see image) MUST READ
Once it finish md5, compare it with below provided md5 sum and select yes only if it matches. If it doesn't match that means your download is corrupted and needs to redownload.
Ok Next important thing to mentione here is management of bootloop
So many users experiences bootloop after flashing ROM, even after clean install. This is most of due to corrupt data and common issue on kitkat based ROM.
Here recommended steps in case you get bootloop.
1.Make sure you have checked MD5. I have desribed here how to check md5 on device above wit Philz recovery. I strongly recommend to check MD5 on device because sometime file can be corrupted while transffering from PCto device. In case you are using other recovery then you can use root explorer from play store to check MD5. Open root explorer - navigate to ROM file - Long press and select properties. Vait for some time while it finish calculating MD5 and once it matches with one provided on ROM thread.
2.Use recovery which is recommended by developer of ROM.
3.Before flashing ROM wipe data and then install ROM.
4.If still issue then you can try flashing stock recovery and then wipe data with stock recovery. NOTE that wiping data with stock recovery will erase all data from Int SD too.
5.Even after this issue persist then last final way is to flash stock ROM with Odin and then wipe data using stock recovery. After that follow install instruction as said above.
Now After successful flashing ROM last step is to restore data
3.Post flashing Restoring data.
1. First complete setup wizard and wait till you get homescreen. Now here wait for your device to become cool. On first boot after clean install media scanner will scan all drive and Index srvice also will run that will make device quite hot. and this depends on data on your device (5 to 30min) Don't intall anything during this period and wait till device gets cool. (This waiting period is optional but still recommended to prevent any unwanted issue)
2.Now reboot device and add your google account. If you have cloud backup for your contacts then let sync to finish and as soon as you add google account your contacts will be restored autometically. Ifyou don't want to sync contact data then immdiately open account-google and select 'Cancel sync' now you can manually select each option which you want to select if you needs selected data to sync only.
3.In case you don't sync contacts with google server then now time to restore from backup you made by other way. Apart from titanim other way to backup contacts is from contact application itself. for that you needs to make bachup before wiping device by
Contact - menu -Impoort/Export - export (SD/ExtSd)
If you have make backup this way then now restore it by doing this in reverse. Contact-men-Import/Export-Import (from where you created backup)
In case you have created backup by titanium then
Open titanium app - look for contact storage (green color) and select it - restore -data only. Remeber this step you have to do after adding google account only otherwise you can't see contacts.
Next is restore SMS
Open titanium - look for Messages (Yellow color) - select - restore -data only
Now reboot device and check contacts and messages are restored correcly
4.Restore rest of app and data.
For this open titanium - menu - batch action - Select "Restore missing app with data" option Here very important thing on next screen is to keep selected two option a.App + data and b.Exclude System apk. This option a will restore all your app including data like game level (may not with few app), credential of app, settings/preferences of app etc and option b will prevent any junk file of preveios ROM to inject.
After confirming of these two options now check list of app which going to restore. Have a look again and deselect any app you don't needs as well an app you don't know what is it (sometimes old ROM junk can be seen here)
Once restore process start, keep patience and let it finsh. During this time device getting hot is normal. and once restore finish, simply reboot device and open application whih requires to give auto notification. Also open applications manually which require root permission. Remember some application can't work unless you manually open it once after titanium restore.
Also to remind that if you find lots of application causing force closes after restoring titanium then may e your ROM is not fixed for it and you needs to Install TB restore fix from play store and needs to apply fix. Also to note you needs to do it everytime you restore titanium data.
OK friends I think lots for now and will update if I find anything missin here. Thiugh it's long to read but I can assure once you do it, you will never worry about wiping device. and it's one time investment to keep device clean

This is for users who first time ever flashing custom ROM.
First you should know difference between stock recovery and custom recovery at least visual difference. So if you don't know how stock recovery looks then first put device in recovery this way
Turn off device. Press Vol UP + Home + Power simultaneously. once you see samsing logo on screen just release power button and keep holding other two. Soon you will see some menu on screen. Note down options available and this is stock recovery. Now move On
1.First make backup of your contacts and SMS. you can do it without having device rooted too. For contacts you can sync with google account OR making backup locally from contact app-menu-Import/Export-Export to (USB/Rxt SD) I recommend ExtSD if you have ext SD card because sometime you needs to wipe IntSD card and may you lose data from IntSD (USB storage) For SM you can use samsung account OR offline with third party app like SMS Backup/Restore
2. Remember that for Installing custom ROM you don't needs to have device rooted. Just only having custom recovery (CWM/TWRP) is enough.
Here is guide to flash custom recovery.
First download tar OR tar.md5 format recovery. If you don't know where to get then seek help from ROM thread which you want to flash and get download link of recovery recommended by respective ROM developer.
Once you get custom recovery in tar format, you needs odin. Also make sure you have installed Kies OR Samsung USB drivers on your PC. I prefer samsung driver only.
Remember you don't connect device to PC while flashing with any extension cable. Simply use single cable to connect device with PC. If it is desktop machine then choose one from backside (direct connects to MoBo
Also make sure your machine's firewall is Off and also turn off antivirus if any you have installed on machine.
Now you are ready to go.
3.Turn off your device. Once it turn off completely, press three button Vol Down + Home + Power to put device in download mode.
Now you will see warning screen and press Volume up to continue
After this you will see green android logo and text Downloading...
4.Open Odin from PC and select PDA (On new version of Odin it will be AP) and navigate to custom recovery which you have downloaded in tar/tar.md5 version. See image below for No3
5.Connect your device to PC and soon ID:COM tab will be turn to different color once device is detected. (see No 1 in above Image)
6. Keep selected Auto reboot and Reset time as shown in Image above
7. Now click on start button (no5 in image above)
8.It will take few seconds to finish process and you will see Pass/RESET msg on first tab of Odin. Now you can disconnect device and it will auto reboot.
9.Turn off device and put device in recovery as said very first on this post. If your recovery is changed from first look of stock recovery then you have successfully finished first task. Now move to post 1 above and part 2 Installing ROM section to continue to flash custom ROM.
10.If even after flashing custom recovery you recovery not changes and same as stcok look you have before flashing then follow this.
11. Follow steps 3 to 5 above and after this uncheck Auto reboot option (no 2 in above image) and finish steps 7.
12. Now this time your device won't reboot auto but when you see Pass/REST msg simply disconnect devie and put device in recovery manually bu Vol UP + Home +Power (as said initially)
13.Now you should have custom recovery. and you are ready to proceed for Flashing custom ROM. Head toward post #1 avove section 2 (Installing ROM)

Great thread. I would just add to backup external datas for certain apps like WhatsApp: they're stored in the internal sd and may get lost when formatting it, since usually Titanium doesn't include them in its backup.

I said that about third party (User) applications. Like any third party app you have restored with titanium and that requires root you should trigger supersu permission by asking it. sometimes what happen that it ask supersu permission while you are not monitoring device and you may miss it and app can't perform action. Also some app are not having auto restart option so these kind of app also needs to open it once after restoring with TB
In short user Applications you restored with titanium needs to open once to get it activated.

Doc, lets say XDA v1.2 is install and i did TB backup manually for that on my microSD card. Later on XDA v1.3 is installed how can i make it automatically overwrite the previous verison on the microSD card without deleting it manually?

It depends on how many backup to keep is selected under preferences. If you select one then earlier will be erased automatically once you backup new.

Alternatively, if one has problems with any backups on external SD, mostly on KitKat firmwares due to write to SD permission revoked for 3rd party apps, one can use this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.genie9.gcloudbackup to make backup on cloud storage and keep it secure forever and restore hassle free(until you forget your password ).
Does not require root, so its fine for those coming from stock to custom directly without rooting.
