First Thanks to: bender beerman, Salil99, nemofbaby2010 and the others I most likely left out in holding my hand to root 2 720's. One an MDL and one a MF9. (BTW so you don't end up in the bathroom on the can when it seems to freeze MAKE SURE YOU SET USB DEBUGGING!).
So the wifes phone is MF9, seems I should - for my sanity's sake, keep them the same - I have a "System Update Downloaded/Touch to Install" sitting here, so ...
There is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480 which is nice, but I want only to update, I am running stock ROM/software and would like to keep it that way, I'm fine with it.
My question is, if I change the file for native tethering BEFORE I update, what update/method would I use that would keep everything nice and kosker?
AND how does one tell if this is a deodexed or odexed ROM?
A big thanks in advance - and if you haven't donated to these guys get off you ...

I'm a bit confused on the question. What do you mean by changing the file? Usually if you want to update with a modified ROM, you usually have to do a factory reset (I know, boo :crying: )
As for checking for odexed vs deodexed, you need a file manager with root permissions. Navigate to /system/app, and if you see any .odex files, then you're odexed. If you see any .apk files, then you are deodexed (Credits to Android Central for this one!)
Thanks for the mention! I do have an extra 9 at the end, haha.

WAAAAAAH.
Now that I got that out of my system, re-read my post and well, er, let me reword it: To do the native tether mod without a custom recovery you need to copy over two files - services.jar and services.odex. What I'm asking is, if I do that, THEN take the update that Sprint has waiting for me already downloaded on the phone[/I] (which I believe is MF9), will it take out root and that mod?
Now that I've done a bunch of reading ( yes one of my finer points is my ability to read) I AM going to put TWRP V2.5.0.0.0 - which I am familiar with and understand plays nice with the S4 - on the phone via GooManager, so that makes the tether mod easy, but what about this update waiting on my phone? As far as I'm concerned I'd not do it, but I now one day I'm going to pass my finger over "Touch to Install" and then ...

******************************* update ********************
Installed, via GooManager (now this is REALLY making things too easy!) TWRP V2.6.0.0, backed it up, and now one 1 phone I'll be adding the Native Tether Mod, the other - mine - has a notification that there is a software update - Touch to Update, which I do not want to do, in case it's firmware.
If you apply the the hotspot mod before applying the MF9 upgrade the update will fail because you will have modded system files. Just apply the update now, then re root with cf autoroot and then apply the correct hotspot mod for MF9. I don't understand why people worry about losing root when the cf autoroot works so well. Remember, in order to apply the update you must be on a stock recovery also.

The update won't work anyway if you are rooted. I've accidentally pressed it before too. First it will prompt you to update, so you don't have to worry about that.

I'm not worried about losing root, I'm just TRYING to sift through the 100 or so ways of doing the bits and pieces, that - put together - make a rooted MF9/Custom Recovery/WiFi Tethered S4 without a lot of scary things happening.

Now THAT is of interest. I've TWRP 2.6.0 on it, can you point me in the right direction where there are instructions on going BACK to a stock recovery?
I'm beginning to think enough - I'm fine where I am - after I add the tether MOD - the Wife's a MF9, with tether MOD to be put on it today.

How do I flash - and where IS the file - back to stock recovery in MDL?
OR do I flash this file L720VPUAMDL_L720SPTAMDL_SPR.zip which will give me a stock MDL and Recovery and THEN let the MF9 OTA update happen, CF-Root, then TWRP via GooManager, then Tether MOD?

Let me ask, what are you on?
I ask, as I have that update waiting, ( and notice your tag says you are a MDL ) but as posted above, am thinking about staying where I am, and just finish it by applying the Hotspot MOD.

I'm on MDL, currently using CyanogenMod. I had stock for a really long time though, and I never upgraded to MF9. I've heard countless problems and issues with it and other various mods out there. I personally think it's just easier to stay MDL. I've also heard that MF9 has a long boot time (1-2 minutes, even) whereas MDL is about 15-35 seconds.
So bottom line, I'm staying MDL (and I advise you to do too! but everything is your choice! :good

I basically agree. I'm beginning to hear - even from the store where I bought them, there have been problems. I got caught up in the fact that I have 2 phones (2 fer sale) and wanted them the same o I wouldn't get mixed up if I did something later on.
BUT, other then the notification - which bugs the hell out of me, it's doing everything I want it to do, so I am staying put.
PLUS, while there is a TON - probably 5 tons - of info on this site, it's a bear trying to find the right info. I can't tell you how many times I've had to ask a question that HAS been answered before, but with 10 different answers.
Thank you again.

I had to post. Its 5:21 and I need sleep. I tried updating to amdl on my i337. I never updated the modem when it came out and I was running an odex 4.2.2 google rom. I was unable to root my phone using an odex Google edition from the i9505 which I lokidoki'd. It was 4.3 and I was able to upgrade, but nothing and I mean absolutely nothing will allow a root. I also just updated to mf3 which I didn't mean to do (hit the wrong file in cwm) after doing everything I could with my amdl. I reverted to amdl and tried forever. The binary won't install and it wouldn't before mf3. I looked everywhere. Root methods for both basebands. I tried all of them short of ones that will brick me. Any input would be great. I'm glad to be on 4.3, but I NEED root. I'm not a pro, but I've been doing this stuff long enough to know what I'm doing. If you think of something even moderately complex, I've probably done it. You're making this way too complicated.
1. System Settings --> About Phone
2. Activate Developer Options by tapping "Build number" several times
3. System Settings --> Developer Options --> Root Access --> Apps and ADB (or Apps only, if you prefer)

It was already enabled. There is nothing about root access in my Dev options. All I get is that superuser cannot update the binary. I've tried motochopper and just installing supersu through cwm. The old version of it gives root access but it never sticks and keeps asking and as soon as it updates it tells me that it can't install a binary on 4.3

Huh. OK, let me get a little more info. First off, you never did the OTA MF3 update, correct? As in, the Loki exploit still works on your device?
Also, when you say, "I tried updating to amdl," and, "I also just updated to mf3," do you mean firmware versions or just modems(basebands)? It seems to me that you mean the latter, because your screenshot is still showing the 4.3 Google Edition firmware.
If this is the case, it sounds like you have not tried a full wipe and re-flash of the rom. Is this true?

Tried a wipe. Tried another rom just like it. Nothing. And yes just the basebands. I'm running AMDL right now on kangabean. It's all good. I like the rom a lot actually. I got Wallet working which was big for me. Just slightly disappointed at the deodex. Would prefer an odex rom. Oh well! Thanks for your help everyone I appreciate it.

So I am upgrading from my beloved S3 to the Red S4 now, getting it in on Tues. Thank you employee line deals.. So anyways, I saw some stickies about to avoid the OTA otherwise can not flash a diff kernel, correct? That there are no odin files of the new update.
That being said, How will I know when I get my device in, if they already gave it to me updated or if its where I can custom rom it. Would figure its a certain thing in the status menu part for a version. Dont wanna mess this up, so doing my research now.
Also any custom roms that are super worth it? I know on my S3, I use a nice one with the multi window and floating windows. So if there is a super good one to use, IF I can use one, what is it?
Also does the toolbox program we used for the S3 work for S4? (Havent checked on updates in awhile) cause I need to least root this sucker if I wanna restore my titanium backups.
Anyways thanks for any points in the right direction, this is the part I always hated.. working with a new phone then sitting with it till I study up on all the roms and tweaking of it.
When you get your device got to settings>more>about device and if the the last three characters of the baseband is MF3 then you can only use stock kernels with safestrap recovery and if it is MDL or MDB you can have custom recovery, custom roms with motochopper root. There are some pretty good roms out there. Unfortunately i'm on MF3 cause i got the OTA and it updated overnight.
Also when you first get your box with the phone inside. Look on the outside of the box and it will show which firmware is on it. It will have the last three letters of mdb, MDL, or MF3. All I can say is HOPE for MDL which may or may not be possible. But the red colored ones do not seem to go as fast so HOPEFULLY it is MDL.
Next course of action IF it is MDL is DO NOT connect to WiFi, and I would also suggest NOT putting in the Sim card yet. Download Motochopper by Jbliss and or Casual+motochopper by Adam Outler which will root and install tarp recovery. Then read up from there and flash a ROM.
If it comes with MF3 then you will need to flash SafeStrap to be able to out "some Roms" onto your phone and have root. But safestrap is more limited than what you are used to/what I posted in the paragraph above.
I am GUESSING you are buying it from ATT? Then chances may be slim of anything other than mf3. But I did get a MDL from Walmart (they had black and white if I remember correctly, not sure about red). I got a black one with MDL about a month ago and they had two others in stock. So places like that MAY be a better bet for you.
Now this is MY opinion and take it for what it is worth. I will NEVER be buying another ATT phone due to how hard they are locking the boitloaders down. NEVER... So my next suggestion is get a T-Mobile S4 and you can use it on ATT and it does not have locked bootloaders at this time and hopefully never.
Read all the sticky threads about MF3 and prepare yourself in case you want to keep it. Good luck to you

You will have to try out different roms and see for yourself what they have to offer.if it turns out to be MF3 take the most important advice "!!READ!!"

Before you get your phone read a whole lot about it. Read all the pinned (stickies) threads first. Then keep reading before you do anything with it. Good luck!

Yes, getting from ATT dealer accounts, while I know I can use T-Mobiles stuff, I wouldnt have the "LTE" ability, which is what is happening now with my TMO S3, I have 4G, yes, but not LTE. So giving that phone to my friend for her upgrade, so she can get LTE with TMO while upgrading myself. Now if I am MDL, then woot, I take it its almost business as usual with the way I worked my roms and so of the past?
Then lets say I am MF3, now that in itself. may not be "as bad" since honestly, the S3's rom was pretty solid out of the box, just root it and go. Could I assume if I dont wanna put a diff rom on MF3, I could least root the stock rom easy enough and move on? (Plus could use titanium backup to remove the bloat) Seems abit crazy on MF3 and safe strap, sounds like its using the internal storage space to run the rom off of.
Now in regards to if I am MDL, I assume you mean download motochopper for the pc, then hook up and let it run. Now after that point, is my phone safe from OTA? Do I need to install a new rom right then and there or can I use stock rom and know that I am safe from it updating to MF3. Just making sure I got my notes right for tm morning when it comes in by fedex heh.

Yes it would be almost exactly business as usual. Of course READ any Roms HOW TO INSTALL section. About the only difference from the S3 flashing is if you are flashing kernels/Roms make sure the are loki'd or use Loki doki during flashing. Again read up on this.

Yes you can flash some Roms (4.2.2 based Roms) with Safestrap. Read all about safestrap as I do not have it and don't know many if the answers since I cannot test. But the one thing is be VERY CAREFUL removing bloat with tibu, once it is gone you will NOT be able to get it back. Read many horror stories if debloating gone wrong and phone not working.

Yes download either Motochopper or I like "Casual+Motochopper" as it gives you a recovery as well. Either cwm or twrp.
No at that point it is NOT safe from OTA updates, you will need to FREEZE certain apps with tibu.
Check out the Roms section. I haven't used it but I believe there is a "neutered mf3 stock firmware" that has the ota updating parts removed already. If you do NOT freeze the apps ATT set up mf3 to Auto Download and INSTALL mf3. Most users got it while they were sleeping, even if they were only stock and rooted. But IF you have a custom recovery and a ROM on it you will not get the auto update and install.

MDB was what came with the phone and MDL was updated within a few weeks if I remember correctly. I believe I still have the mdb bootloaders on my phone and my wife's came with MDL and has those bootloaders. I have seen NO DIFFERENCE as far as flashing or things working differently in my case.

Yes I believe you cannot flash kernels with safestrap. And only 4.2.2 based Roms will work and possibly on tw Roms, but there might be one cm variant that would work. Just check out the safestrap thread for more info on all if this. I think they even have a list if tested working Roms there.
No one knows FOR SURE but I believe the new 4.3 update blows a second qfuse, this will make it so you cannot downgrade to anything lower than MJ6.
MF3 blows the first qfuse which is why you cannot downgrade to MDL bases.

Of course I am rooted... you think after being a pioneer with a beloved Htc G1, that I would EVER be on a device without root. =p (Man.. the reinstalling of a 100 apps manually alone without titanium backup along with its prefs, config and data would take a week to get right) I used that exFat method.
But yea, even tho I am rooted, I wouldnt "mind" a diff rom.. or least debloat this sucker. Half tempted to see which ATT apps I could get rid of, issue is... no odin to restore to if something messes up. I am sure someone will do a mf3 recovery sometime eh?
Oh... btw, how would I disable any auto OTA that could come in the future?

I think its time for a drink, samsung is confusing as hell, im assuming since I used kingo for root and it booted up custom that I tripped the knox security right?

No you did not trip Knox, that just means you're rooted. You can install THIS app to get rid of the "custom" icon. Just install it and hit "reset flash counter" then reboot.
There is also a free version here.

Thanks guys, this has been kinda a hellish conversion to sammy from moto as everything is different especially with root and flashing I honestly hate touch whiz yet love some of the features, wish i could toggle off the damn notification widget the small one and huge one and have stock 4.3/4.4 bar up there I like how on stock it shows my google acct and other stuff
Ok im having a problem, when trying to flash KK
- Install De-Odexed or Odexed NC2 zip or Baja Rom KKv1 (from sdcard) (Keep your eyes open for additional 4.4.2 Roms)
I downloaded the de-odexed nc2 that 1.6 gb file, dragged the zip to my sd, boot into recovery, wipe internal and the file is nowhere to be found on my SD, not sure whats going on really. It seems like everything keeps disappearing.
Nevermind, The thread needs to be edited to tell people to ONLY put it on the internal memory, external Never worked for me tried 10 times downloading and transferring, in phone and my macbook sd card slot (i am not using OSX to do this i am using Windows 8.1)
Awesome thread I will be getting a replacement note 3 hopefully Tuesday and I am completely new to samsung more of a htc person. .. but happy I got the note 3

You should like it a lot, Its somewhat confusing from motorola but I got the hang of it, would like that first reply to have a sticky labled "Dummies Come here, THIS IS HOW TO ROOT, SS, UPDATE TO 4.4, AND Stop OTA" The only problem was like what I said earlier use internal mem, honestly I recommend removing your SD if you have one in because theirs a wipe option and it doesn't seem like its that hard to accidentally hit.

Just the stock nc2 deodexed, i only chose deodexed because it is more mod friendly if i decide to ever do anything, odexed is supposedly faster but I have not noticed a difference since android reached over 800mhz single core other then boots take a little bit longer, honestly now all I need is to find the sd card permissions fix for KK and im good

Heya. I have a rooted verizon note 3. I see i can get the 4.4.4 ota update. So i uninstalled root via SuperSU. I get an error trying to do the ota update. Is there a way to install this update without having to use odin and flashing stock? I dont want to lose all my appz settings etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to take the update. I'd wait until our trusty devs get ahold of the OTA and do their magic.
Yah, but i get pretty poor 4g for some reason and this update might (is suppose to) fix it. I read a lot of people have unrooted with superSU and installed the OTA update fine but for me it isnt working. Even though i dont have root.

That might just of been the best error ever, especially if you use root a lot. No way to go back and no known, released root at the moment for that version. Like above me has said, try flashing the NK1 modem using Odin and see if that improves your signal any.
Well, i just have been using the stock rom, rooted with safestrap. Id like to update to 4.4.4 just to have the latest OTA with whatever various fixes it might have. Before i did the update i uninstalled anything from wanam exposed framework wise. Then i did the "remove root" from superSU. I still have the unlocked lock on the note 3 splash screen after reboot and the OTA fails....says error at install screen. I have read other people have done what i have done and the update worked. What im asking is am i overlooking something? Is it really even possible without using odin and reverting to stock even though i have read people have had sucess????

If you want the benefits "fixes" of the latest, would be be smart to Odin stock so you are clean when you take the OTA.

You do realize...that if you take the OTA...you WILL lose root. At this point in time...there is no known way to root 4.4.4 and the latest OTA.

I too have read ambiguous posts of people who have used the 4.4.4 OTA on a towelroot'ed Verizon Note 3s. I've been skeptical that this would work and keep root so thanks for clarifying.
I have a question though. Where should I look to keep track of the latest news about a root technique for a Verizon Note 3? Also, is there a place to contribute to a bounty for someone who can figure this out?
I ask because If you google "samsung note 3 Verizon 4.4.4 towelroot" there are tons of hits, but most of them are from eons ago and while I root my phone, I am not a developer, and so don't know the lay of the land. In the past I've just searched for "root verizon samsung note 3" and crawled through the resulting mound of irrelevant material until eventually I found the answer. Or is the answer simply that every few days I search again to see if anything new pops up?
I realize this is a totally newbie question, but I'm a long-time newbie: I've been rooting my phones for years but I don't have a lot of phones and updates only come out every so often so I never really move up the learning curve of how to do this quickly and easily. I suspect others have the same problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It likely is possible to update and keep root. But if after updating you screw up a mod, etc. and need to get back to stock you will lose root permanently.

There is no Odin 3.29 out. Just Google Odin 3.09 and download to your desktop if you don't
already have it. Then flash the modem to your phone. Don't unroot.

You need to put your phone in download mode before plugging into pc. Make sure debugging is checked in developer settings.
Thanks…
I forgot the download mode and to check the debug- always in a rush…

Verizon forced me to upgrade before they would troubleshoot my phone.
I was not able to do it OTA, but using the Verizon upgrade tool works.
Now I lost root, & I gained a whole bunch of bloatware. Very frustrating

I read about 4.4.4 and didn't like what they took away from 4.4.2. I won't go to it. If I were you I'd 'towelroot'- (get the simple steps on xda), and 'beanstown 106' has all the firmwares for these phones, put the nc4 on w/ 4.4.2, then install biggins rom v7, then upgrade via dirty flash with 8.0 then immediately w/ 8.3- fast touch response and after about 3-4 days, you'lI be getting twice the battery life… I jumped up to the new v9 but they dont have the theme for it yet. I miss the Kromex blue on black…
Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

I'll be honest, I haven't really messed with any custom ROMS before. I just use the stock AT&T one. But I would like to upgrade to KitKat so my phone is faster and can download / upgrade the latest Apps. Lollipop isn't out for the AT&T Samsung S4 right?

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,
Last question: Do you recommend the First or second option?

Just a bit confusing as why he would post two separate links? I'm interpreting the first cannot be rooted ever.

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!
