[Q] Recovering internal storage - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I need to try and recover some pictures and other files from a waterlogged ATT GS4. The phone will boot into recover, and I've heard it is possible to extract files from recovery.
Can I do this without unlocking bootloader or rooting?
If not, what recovery allows access to internal storage? (stock, TWRP, clockwork, etc)
Any other links/tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Not sure if you are familiar with this. . .
However, if you can get into recovery, you should be able to mount usb and then use your PC /Mac to
browse through your soggy phone and copy out your phones from the photo folder(s).
Good Luck!
EDIT: Sorry please disregard --it seems your not rooted and may not have a custom recovery. . .not sure if stock have an option to attach usb, probably not ;-( sorry.

Pull the battery, sim, and sd out. Keep the back cover off and put it in a bag of rice for 3 days. Might be able to save it.

Thanks for the replies.
It's completely stock so no luck mounting internal storage. Also the phone has been dried thoroughly and it just simply will not boot past the "Samsung Galaxy S4" screen. The phone has the MF3 update so I'm assuming all hope is lost. At this point I don't even care about the data, I just want to try and get it working again.
It kills me that it is capable of booting, but because of the MF3 update, it is currently impossible to recover. All I want to do is flash a completely stock build of the firmware. I don't even care if it is MF3 again. Samsung hosed people like me on this one.

bricked my galaxy note, by wiping through cwm, any chance that my pics got deleted

As above, sending my phone back after bricking it, but I have a problem I have pics and videos of me and the Mrs doing things on holiday and I'm worried they are going to be seen uploaded to the net...the the Mrs is worried.
What's the chances I'd my files being on there after a wipe through cwm?
Did you format your internal SD? That should fix any potential issue. Even though the phone is bricked you should be able to format using CWM. or else you can connect via ADB and reformat....
Yes, I think that's how I busted it to start with. There is no recovery option there any more..cwm has gone too. The only thing I can do it get it in to download mode. I tried using odin to partition the internal memory and then put stock OS on there but it gets stuck and won't put the Rom on it.
I took it back to the shop and he said they are going to send me a bag, and once they get my phone they will send me out a new one, but me and the Mrs is a little worried that they will get his of our media
Will abd let me view the file system with the phone in download mode, or with the phone being off...?
I dont think they will extract whatever is inside. They will simply replace the board and throw the damaged one in the bin.
Be careful nct time though.

Hi,
Well I am sure you'd be able to flash a kernal, something like speedmod k3-3, or thor kernal. Then you should be able to get to the recovery mode.
If this fails, then you need to connect to ADB-- and it should work both in the download, and recovery modes. Then by using "parted" you can delete / create partitions. I suggest you format the SD partition (UMS).
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667886 it has some of the parted commands you'd need..
BTW. do you have a yellow triangle ATM?
I need more information before I can help you, I will require a copy of each and every Picture & Video that you dont want samsung to see, Then i will fully examine it several times and we will take it from there
i have a yellow triangle but it doesnt look like the one listed as the counter for rom flashing. it says something about failed os install and to connect to kies for recovery...something along those lines, i dont have to phone handy right now.
i dont really want to flash a kernal just incase it voids the warranty and i cant fix it or send it back.
so if i format using adb everything should be wiped clean off it?
my girlfiend is pretty p!ssed with me atm whoops :crying:

this is the message it gives me when i try and boot into safe mode
Flash speed mod via Odin to get cwm back and try again.

Samsung has no right to even browse through your photos. Of course it happens, but it's illegal for them and if you'll find any of those pictures uploaded somewhere by them, you've got grounds to sue ( especially if they're private )
Anyway, have you tried recovery mode in Kies ? It's not the best tool, but it helps sometimes.

yeah, i will give kies another shot, i was messing about last night but it was late and had to be up at 5am for work so gave up
Flash speedmod 3-3 with PC Odin.
If it's successful , boot into recovery and format sd card. (I am not sure but in speedmod recovery internal sd card is external and the other way around.)
To remove yellow triangle and flash counter , flash the Godsend Angelom kernel and wipe data/factory reset ....kaboom....! Your phone will be stone cold dead and no one can see/recover data on sd card.
would i use speed mod through PDA?
have any of you ever been through this? did you still have your media when you flashed a new kernal/rom?
Hey can ur pc still read the phone as a storage device? If so download recuva to ur pc and run a scan. Itll recover about 80% of all files u had on there
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
no, it doesnt see it, if it did then i would just format it on the pc. its not that i want the files, i just dont want anyone else to have them lol
Did you delete partitions? You can flash firmware/kernal via odin. You may need to use a pit file. Or else create partitions using adb shell
Or if ur cirtain if u formatted ur sd, u can also send to sammy as is?

It's a longshot, but try running Odin from the softbrick screen (the one with the Phone, exclamation sign and the PC). I had a guy brick a galaxy tab at work and Heimdall wouldn't finish the flash in Download Mode, but it worked at the softbrick screen. Best of luck.

[Q] Bricked Nexus 4

Hi, It may not be completely bricked but as far as I am concerned it is. I tried to free up some space on the phone by formatting everything in ClockworkMod. Factory resets did nothing and the phone showed I had used over 10 GB. I figured formating was just going to clear out all the backups and old files.
As of now I can get into recovery but that's about it. When I try to reboot all it does is bring up the words GOOGLE. My PC wont recognize it as I cant enable USB debugging. I thought if I could just drag a new rom, gapps, zip file into the internal storage I would be good. I also thought I might be able to restore it to stock with a toolkit but again they request USB debugging on.
I am real new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to bring this phone back to life in some sort of straight forward way?
PS. As of this morning things seem to have gotten worse. I used a toolkit to try and get things working and now I cant boot into recovery. All I get is the robot on its back with red triangle icon. I can press power, then volume up and get another menu but I am really at a loss. Any further help would be great. Thanks.
Thanks
You're definitely not bricked.
You must restore the factory image, which you can find from Google... Google "nexus factory image" and restore in bootloader mode.
I'm not going to go into detail on how to restore, there are dozens of threads on how to do that. Start by Googling "how to flash nexus factory images"...
I'm assuming that since you've dabbled with modifying your Nexus that you are familiar with the super duper important ADB/Fastboot procedures? If not, you've got a lot to learn before you start messing with your phone...
Edit: You can also attempt to ADB push a stock rooted ROM (only so you don't have to mess with gapps at the moment) through your custom recovery. Again though, do your due diligence and read before messing with this sort of thing.

Just sideload a rom with adb.
adb push a ROM into your memory via cmd prompt. I think you can adb push data using the Nexus 4 toolkit in the stickies.
When you figure out how to push files into your phone, flash the new ROM.
Alternatively, use efrant's guide from my signature. The only correct & educative way of returning to stock. Avoid toolkits!

[Fixed] Black Screen on Boot

Hello.
I just rooted my phone for the first time with Motochopper and flashed the Google Wallet Mod. Everything was working fine until after a while I tried turning my screen on and it wouldn't turn on. I rebooted the phone and the Samsung Logo with the Custom Lock logo appears for a short while, then the screen goes black. After about 20 seconds the blue LED stays constantly lit and slowly fads in and out - after a few minutes the device becomes really hot. The screen stays black and I can't do anything. Is there any way to get my phone back to normal without deleting everything off my phone and restoring the stock ROM?
I have a US AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 16GB (SGH-I337).
Any help is appreciated,
Thank you.
-Problem fixed.
You have any backups? try restoring one and see if you get the same result. If not, odin back to stock would be your only option.

Unfortunately I don't have any backups. This is my first Android phone, coming from an iPhone, and I'm still getting used to rooting as opposed to jailbreaking. I installed TWRP before I flashed the Google Wallet mod but thought I would be fine until I get an external micro SD card to create the backup on. Is there any way I can access and transfer my photos that are on the device either via Recovery Mode or Download Mode to my computer before I loose everything restoring back to stock?
If you just rebooted thru power menu, try pulling battery--
Did you try manually booting into recovery--

The first time I rebooted, I used some combination of the power and home button because when I tried to turn it on the screen was black. Something must have happened while the device was idle because everything was fine but when I turned it on it wouldn't come on so I rebooted. When it boots, the screen stays black with the blue LED and if I try to reboot, the same thing happens - it's stuck in a loop and the only way to turn it off is to pull the battery out. I can manually boot into recovery, but I have no backups. I've tried doing a Factory Reset in the TWRP, but no dice.
Wow--lesson learned hard way--ALWAYS have backup on phone and pc, including a copy of your sdcard--
That should be at top of every phone forum stickies--
I am not expert on Samsung yet. But, on my HTC phone we would have downloaded a rom to the pc and thru adb pushed it to phone then wiped and flashed it.
It is easy, but you will need to get adb files on your pc or download and install Android ADK. I think if someone has them for this phone you can copy them to pc and put in adb folder and bypass SDK. They are in some of the exploits like motochopper. Matter of fact you could probably extract motochopper and put in your download folder or to desktop and run adb from there. It has all the commands.
Some one else more expert on phone can confirm that and give exact push command to get rom to phone. I can Google it, just haven't used those commands for awhile,
It will be something like putting motochopper extracted folder onto pc. Opening a terminal window and cd'ing to where ever you put it
Then typing adb push rom.zip /sdcard rom.zip
Of course you need to rename rom to "rom.zip" or use the exact name of the rom you put on pc.
That command will have rom.zip on root of sdcard
I pretty much had this happen to my phone -

I am on an iMac and use Android File Transfer. Not sure how they do it on PC as I thought we still can't mount sdcard in Recovery. Maybe Kies if it works for you. But, if you can only get to recovery and no backup, pushing a rom may be the answer. Come morning you'll get more answers. One thing I noticed coming from TMobile HTC to US ATT, not much overnite posts since we are all within 3 hour time zones. With Tmobile, lots of Europe folks.

Lesson well learned. When I get my phone up and running my first priority after re-rooting will be making a backup.

I was actually able to mount USB Storage via TWRP and use the ADB command adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/Camera to extract the photos off my phone to my computer. Now it's not so bad if I have to restore to default.
Always always backup FIRST before attempting to do anything, that is lesson one period.

Great. Since you are up on adb you can easily push a rom. I will have to try to mount in recovery again. I think android file transfer messes with mounting.

Instead, I used Odin to flash the stock GS4 firmware. Now my phone is working again. Oh and I made a backup this time.
Thank you to all who helped me.

Super. Having not used Odin and on an imac, not sure that was an option in your case. Glad you got it.

[Q] Messed up big time, need help (soft brick?)

I'm stuck on the samsung boot screen and can't do anything to get past it.Let me tell you how I got here..
So I earlier was having TWRP problems, for some reason it wouldn't get past the samsung boot screen whenever I flashed a new cm10.2 nightly, unless I did a restore and did it again and a bunch of other stuff.
So I tried switching to CWM 1.0.3.4, kinda stupid of me to use this older version, it was an accident.
Anyways I did a wipe and installed cm 10.2, it worked the first time around and I restored everything via Titanium (THIS IS WHERE I MESSED UP) apparently you shouldn't do that, after I rebooted I couldn't get back the samsung boot screen. So I tried doing what I usually did, which was reformatting/doing a full wipe before I reflash a rom. Here is the issue, I can no longer reformat on my phone. I get an issue "error mounting /data", it says error mounting sd_card as well. I can't wipe my dalvik cache either. Even though it says error mounting sd_card I can still attempt to install .zip files from the sd card, and see all my files. But I can't do a full wipe so the rom won't flash correctly I guess, which won't let me get past the samsung boot screen.
I can't access my phone via USB either, my computer doesn't remotely detect it unless I boot using volume down+home+boot which gets me to some "Downloading, Do not turn off target" screen. If I plug in my usb here my computer at least detects something but just something it recognizes as "Samsung Mobile USB Modem". Kies just times out trying to load the phone.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I've been wracking my brain at this for the past 4 hours and I'm freaking out..
Crux of issue:
-Stuck at boot screen (can boot into recovery or "odin mode" not sure what that is though can't seem to do anything here)
-Can't do a full wipe
-Can't flash a rom because of bad wipe
Odin back to stock and if you have force closes and stuff when you do that in stock recovery do a factory reset. Make sure u try to pull ur files you want to keep on your SD before you factory reset after odining to stock because ur SD card will be wiped.
But wait for someone else to respond maybe they know a less time consuming way.

Yeah I'm going to odin back to stock.. downloading the stock .tar right now..
I had to odin back to stock the other day and didn't think nothing of doing a factory reset on a stock recovery. You'll delete everything off your internal SD. I wish someone told me twice lol. Hope everything works for you.

[Q] Bricked? Please help!

Device AT&T i337 MF3 with SafeStrap
I was running GE 4.2.2, excelent ROM by the way props to the devs, but I was having USB to pc connectivity issues. So I decided to go back to Deadly Venom. So I went into SafeStrap and did an advanced whipe, system, cashe, etc. When I went to install DV I realized I didn't have it stored on my extSD like I thought I did. So I went to pull my extSD card to pop it into my computer to transfer the ROM zip to it. In doing so, when I pulled off my phone case I must have pushed the power button so my phone shut off. Now I'm stuck at "Samsung Custom" (with the open padlock icon), screen. So I decided to take a little initiative and booted into the factory revocery and did a Factory data reset, but with no luck. Still stuck at that screen and connot get into SafeStrap recovery. Am I totally bricked?
One other thing I should mention, I'm at work and I only have my new laptop. Because of this issue it currently doesn't have internet conectivitiy and I haven't yet installed ADB.
If you can get into recovery mode, use ODIN to flash a clean install of MF3 and start over again. If you can't do it at work, you will have to wait until you can get to a PC or laptop that you can use. You can search for the threads that have the MF3 ODIN information. Good luck.
