[Q] Galaxy 4 Restarts automatically - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have 2 months old Galaxy s4. It was working fine until last night. Since last night, it automatically restarts and when it restarts it shows me 0% battery left. It started doing this when I was surfing facebook. I uninstalled facebook and it worked fine for a while. Then I tried going on whatsapp and it restarted again. Then i did the hard reset and It worked fine until I went on browser and it restarted again. Now its happening everytime I use anything on the phone.
I bought this phone from India and when I tried calling samsung support in Canada they refused to help me. Does anyone have any tips for me?
PS: When it shows me 0% battery, I removed the battery and restarted the phone and battery came back at 90%. So I dont think its battery problem.

Its even restarting now when I send text messages...driving me nuts...any sugestions??

Try removing your SIM card if you added one, and if that doesnt make anything better, then try to factory reset and flash stock firmware. If both those options fail to yield any results i think your phone might be defective.

I will try removing the sim. I have already tried factory resetting and it didnt help. What do u mean by flash stock rom?

Please pay attention to the device forum in which you seek help
There are many models of S4 and use of some software will turn your device into a $700 paperweight

I had an issue similar to this on my girlfriend's Galaxy S4 SGH-1337 AT&T 32GB. Purchased in America from Samsung.
Removing SIM card, removing SD card, removing both. Factory reset, blah blah blah - none of that worked.
What he was referring to, flashing stock ROM is using an application to force push the original software for your phone back onto your device like brand new. Sometimes this will fix defective issues in a device's software causing these malfunctions.
I did this and fixed her phone's problem completely. Try doing so by following the directions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
*UPDATE: That link provides the AT&T file for flashing stock ROM. You may have to find your specific carrier and model "firmware" file. Just search the xDa forums for so. I quickly looked for a list of models/carriers firmware and didn't see them in a single list. They're available elsewhere but I support xDa and don't want to provide a link to another site.
If you don't have AT&T, make sure you find your model and carrier.

I bought it from India...brand new unlocked....which ROM should I use?

2nd EVO to have GPS Reboot Issue

I know there are similar posts about the general issue but not this particular problem so dont waste my time with search suggestions or flaming me!!! My first EVO had light leakage and after the recent update any activation of the GPS caused the phone to randomly restart (the only non stock thing about the phone was I used UnrEVOked one click "root"). I finally asked for a replacement, got it yesterday and received the OTA today. I hard reset the refurb right out of the box just to make sure. I only had basic programs on this replacement (goggles, google voice, myspace, aim, fourquare, pandora, facebook, twitter, and thats about it) and did not restore anything but my old SMS messages. I just started up foursquare and guess what? THE RANDOM REBOOT! Any advice? I doubt it is fourquare or any of the other basic programs so I'm lost!!
When my phone was randomly rebooting due to gps issues, I solved it by doing a factory reset. I too thought at the time that it was related to an app that was currently installed but I reinstalled all my apps afterwards and the problem hasn't occurred again since performing the reset.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
well i did a hard reset on the first and then even did it by the clear storage setting... then got a completely new evo with the same problem after the OTA update
I had to do a factory reset for mine too. The phone was resetting anytime an app was accessing GPS.
The interesting thing was that when I pulled the micro SD card out of the back, the problem was solved. Of course, once I put it back in, it returned. I have no idea what the significance of that is but nevertheless did a factory reset yesterday and so far no more problems with all the same apps reinstalled.
Thanks I removed it, now no GPS issue??? So what could the problem be the card itself or something that reads the card?
I have had random reset issues with my own Evo, and have hard-reset the device twice already to try and solve the issue. The problem returns after a matter of days. I came to the forums hoping to solve the issue, but so far I have only confirmed what others have seen.
Firstly, I run stock with no root.
Accessing Maps, Camera, ShopSavvy, Goggles, all reset the phone immediately. Also accessing apps that have no GPS access (e.g. NYCMate, Newsrob, Flixster) were causing a reset.
Most importantly, once my phone reset the first time, it would not cease until I removed the battery, or until it drained itself of a charge.
Finding this thread may have solved my issues and saved me a trip to the Sprint store for a reconditioned device.
I have been able to replicate the "solution" of removing the MicroSD card. I have also been able to use a second (newly formatted 2GB) card in its stead with no restarts. My thoughts now are to wipe the original card and replace it and see what happens. If this solves my/our problems, that would be fan-flippin-tastic.
Of course, if the problem persists, it is either an issue with the specific card itself (Samsung 8GB) or with the reader on the phone.
My phone reboots a few minutes into a call when GPS is active in Google nav.
Frustrating to say the least.
So, after hard resetting my phone did the same thing after a few days. Then I found this solution and haven't had any issues since. Granted it's only been a few days, but this definitely worked.
1. Call Sprint and have them give you the MSL CODE for your phone.
2. Dial ##GPSCLRX#
3. Enter the MSL code that you recieved from Sprint.
4. Your phone will reboot.
5. After your phone starts up again it should not reboot because of a GPS crash (test it out).
I will warn you that some have reported having an endless boot loop as a result and had to do a hard reset from recovery. So backup your data first if you need to. I did mine without the bootloop.
I also read that ShopSavvy may be the culprit. I removed it from my phone before doing this as well. You may want to try that first. I'll report with an update after a couple weeks if still ok or if the problem returns. Even if it does return, this is a relatively simple fix until Sprint gets something official out (yeah, right).
this did not fix my phone it is still rebooting
what radio are you guys using? have you updated it recently? or still on the old 7.28? just curious cuz this happened to a friends EVO i am in charge of & sprint store appeared to have updated it as their "fix"

I'm running: 2.05.00.06.10
For me, I didn't change anything that I remember outside of installing apps(no radio, etc updates) and it just randomly developed the reboot issue. Doesn't seem related to GPS to me.
I got into a reboot loop while emailing pictures today(had to pull the SD card to stop).
I got a reboot today(but not a loop) when surfing the app store
I get most reboots while surfing the web using dolphin
SD card is the culprit?
I am experiencing all these same symptoms, except for the fact that at this point, I have restored the phone to 'factory' settings, as well as formatted the SD Cards mutliple times (on the phone). I have no apps on the phone, except for those that come with the factory reset image.
I simply have the 4G and GPS turned on, and my google account synced. When I try to surf the web for more than 20 minutes or so using the default web browser, the phone starts to reboot.
I'm at my wit's end and now I'm off to Fry's to buy a new SD Card. seems like that worked for at least one person above.... any other fixes, much appreciated...
Took an evo with this issue to sprint and they replaced the phone. After doing all the things that you did to solve the problem, decided it was hardware related. Have not had the issue with the replacement phone yet(1 month).
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My brother's Evo was doint this and I tried the factory reset on it twice. It's off with Best Buy right now, hoping he'll have it back before Christmas. Wish I'd seen this thread first but oh well. I'll try ideas here if it still does it when we get it back.
replacing the phone was the only thing that worked for me but i now have light leakage and a loose screen as well as small dings on my phone. making the switch to tmobile soon. form what i hear they give out new phones not refurbished ones.

Try re-formatting the card with the Evo itself (not a PC)
Good info in this thead.
Mine seems to be working better. Too short of time to call it fixed.
what I did....
1.pulled the SD card and loaded all contents to my laptop.
2.formatted the SD card in my phone
3. Reset GPS using the ##gpsclrx# - I had to do this 3 times. Using GPS Test, I noticed that the GPS was working then locking up (not causing a reboot). After the 3rd time of resetting, it was working properly.
Before I tried this...my phone was rebooting randomly...but...sometimes every 30 secs or so. It's been up for about an hour now with all radios turned on.

[Q] [Help] Has anyone met such auto-restart issue on Omnia7?

I met the auto restart issue by several times on my Omnia7.
It occures sometime on IE and marketplace data loading. When the IE / Marketplace is getting data from web through Wifi / 3G, it hangs for about 2-3 second and then the phone restart / reboot automatically. It's much easier to happen when loading a large size web page in IE.
Does anyone have met this kind of issue or know the reason?
Thanks.

Turn phone off and remove battery for 10s min. Then start the phone again. If problems continue and you have a Samsung or carrier support center near you, make them update the firmware to a new one and see if problem is solved.

Thanks for help. It doen't happen so frequently. I've done phone reset and also flashed it into another rom. But the issue is still there.
I've just update it into the new 7008 OS by Zune software yesterday. Hope it could be resolved.
It happened to me once. Just once. FYI, been using this phone for 2 months and it only happened once
Happens to me sometimes on HD7. Not on the Omnia 7 though
It seems not only IE and market place. I met it again yesterday that one app which uses Map control made it crash with Wifi connection. I think that might be because of some data receiving problem on Wifi part.
I've had this happen once since I had the phone in November last year. It was in marketplace, the phone froze and then rebooted itself. This was last week.
I have not installed the update. Like I say this is the first time it's ever happened.
It is most definitely firmware related.
I sent my phone to repair (SIM card reader broken), and they flashed an unbranded rom on it(that was an unexpected extra) and the JK1 firmware. Now I don't have random restarts anymore.
It happened to me twice Yesterday. My omnia runs the 7008 firmware.
I changed my SIM card and hope the problem will no longer appear.
Do you solve this problem in the meantime?
-edit-

Your comment makes me believe the problem is SIM-card related. I've heard of phones randomly rebooting by faulty SIM-cards. I know HTC's problem is mostly mainboard related. Sure do hope it's not a hardware failure. I'll try it for another week or so. If it happens again I'll send it for repair.
I have the same problem. I just have a new Omnia 7 from repair, and the new one already rebbot 3 times since yesterday!
Any idea why?
Is your omnia 7 warm? If it's warm, you must to change your CPU, your cpu is overheat.
Problem will go away. It costs about $75.
I suffer reboots
I suffer from the rebooting problem, sometimes randomly reboots when accessing data (3G also). Well, I believe this is when it happens as it happens a lot!
There have been occasions where the phone gets stuck rebooting and sits with the Samsung Omnia 7 splash screen for ages before powering down; or reboots in a loop.
I tried updating the bootloader with Samsungs tool (after putting the phone in download mode), I've since tried flashing different ROMs and non of them have fixed it.
Currently using:
Phone: I8700XXKB3
PDA:I8700XXKB2
CSC:I8700XENJK1
OS Version 7392
It's so frustrating, it's been to a Samsung 'repair centre' but they just seemed to factory reset it and claimed it was fixed. Next step is send it back to Samsung and hope they fix or replace it for me.
VERY annoying as I cannot use the phone at times when I'm out which is worrying.
I was listening to music, browsing facebook and doing several thing at once with case cover on; then i took off phone from cover and it was very hot, so i supposed it was a over heat problem...
it just happened once for me
I tested this with the SIM in my phone and the SIM out of my phone. It made no difference - I received random restarts in both cases.
It's definitely software related though, as I never received these crashes before upgrading to Mango RTM. Not saying it is Mango, but maybe something to do with the firmware installed in the process of upgrading?
I am really hoping that the official Samsung upgrade to Mango includes new firmware and that it fixes the issue. If not I'm getting rid of this phone, I don't want a phone with features I can't even use. I got a full phone crash the other day when just trying to view a map.
I have it also it only happens when I search websites with the Bing search button. I search websites that I already know that exist and even trough the phone is connected (most of time via Wifi) it shows no results and then restarts. I think any ROM replacement will fix it as I have tried them all without success.
Definetly the issue has something to do with Bing services
Hi I had some random reboots but just a few ones like maybe 3 or 4 in 6 months but since I installed Mango beta, it starts to reboot randomly like you on IE or marketplace but removing the battery a few minutes used to fix this.
I thought it was firmware problem so I flashed it with a lot of different firmwares ( now i have KC1 ) but It didn't solve the problem even worst, now my Omnia 7 is stuck in a boot loop.
I suceeded to make it work for a few hours playing games or using bing maps after puting the phone in the fridge for a few minutes. Now the phone wont charge because of bootlooping so even the "fridge fix" doesn't work. Maybe I will try to change the battery but here in france it's really hard to find Omnia 7 stuffs. Maybe its firmware problem because my phone dont look so hot but it acts like overheat problem. Maybe trying to calibrate the temperature sensor by diagnosis if someone knows how to. I'm ok to try it =)
If someone can give us the normal temperature of their omnia 7 maybe we can compare and try to find the solution.
Thanks for reading my bad english ! =D

[Q] Disconnects from mobile network several times per day

Hi guys, i know this is a common problem, but i have yet to find a solution to it. My S4 (Bell Canada, KOT49H.I337MVLUFNI2, completely stock unrooted) will drop the mobile network (both voice & data), and the only way to get reconnected to Bell is by rebooting my device. After a reboot I might be good for a few hours or for a few days but it always happens again. At first the mobile signal will grey out, then eventually turn to a circle with a line through it. In the network mode setting becomes blank and non-selectable.
Suggestions around the web include selecting WCDMA only, clearing the cache, factory resets, and reflash the full firmware package with Kies3 & Odin. Ive tried them all and the problem always inevitably returns.
Here are a few links to people with similar problems, but nobody seems to have a solution in any of these threads either:

Other than returning it for a replacement under warranty, does anybody have any other suggestions to fix this? Thanks.
anyone?
Are you sure your problem isn't the same as the sim card removed problems? Because the symptoms sound the same in the effect they have, and what is required to temporarily fix it.
See here and here.
I've experienced the same problem, but it seems to have cleared itself.
It first started happening after the update to the latest Bell stock firmware.
I had read some people blaming it the Amazon app store as well as the Skype app. I had both installed, but have since removed Skype but can't say 100% that this is what solved the issue for me.

I have the same problem, this is not the sim card removed problem, this is a bug in Android 4.4.2 because the problem was not present in 4.3 maybe the recent update to 4.4.4 solve this, has someone try out ?

My SIM card is still in place and detected, the phone just disconnects from the network. After a reboot it will be fine sometimes for a few hours - sometimes a few days, but it always inevitably disconnects.
If you check any of the several links I posted you'll see there are hundreds (if not thousands) of people on all different carriers all experiencing the same problem.

I've had my device since Jan of 2014 and the problem only appeared in the last few months following the 4.4.2 update.
I'm having the same problem. It disconnects and reconnects again. Stays disconnected for about 2 mins. Happens like 12 times a day. I re enter the apn setting and still does it..it happens with every rom I flash. I've notices that it mostly happens when it switches from 4g lte to 4g. I'm on At&t 4.4.4
bump. anyone ever find a solution to this?

frustrating problem where the phone is lagging/restarting with sim card inserted.

Let me start off by saying that this issue started back at the beginning of Dec 2015. I've had the phone since winter 2014, and for a year, it was the most amazing phone ever. However, one day as mentioned beginning in dec 2015, the phone began running extremely slow and was restarting frequently. I assumed it was a just a OS issue, and so I did a system factory reset. However, the problem persisted even after a reset and cache clearing. So I called up Samsung, and then told me to send in the phone to get looked at. Since then...I have sent in the phone 4 times to get looked and each time, Samsung has said there is no issue pretty much. I've tried phone with different new batteries, and the same problem still occurs.
The oddest thing that I've noticed with this issue is the phone runs smoothly and flawlessly, when there is no SIM card inserted. But, as soon as I insert my At&T sim card into the phone, all the lagging/restarting issues occur. It's been a frustrating 3 months trying to deal with issue, and i'm at the point where i'm throwing in the towel and calling it quits on trying to fix this phone that costed me so much money.
At&t reps were clueless when I brought this issue to them today, and told me to call samsung....even though samsung says at this point it's a network provider issue and that I bring it to At&t. I've googled this issue and couldn't find anything on this. Posting on here is my last ditch effort, and if anyone knows anything that can, I would very much appreciate it. If not, i'll prob buy a new phone out of pocket.
having the same issue since 2 days after sim change
Hi, I recently switched my carrier and inserted a new sim. Phone worked fine initially but after 1 day it has started working extremely slow. It sometimes does not wake up from sleep even when i press the home button repeatedly. Sometimes it hangs and then gets into bootloop. I factory reset my phone yesterday and the issue resolved initially but when i installed and restored my watsapp messages, the issues started all over again. Now i am thinking of flashing my phone with a different ROM and see if it helps.

Problem persisting even after flashing a new rom
I flashed a 5.1.1 australian ROM downloaded via sammobile. but the phone started hanging again this morning. I am beginning to wonder if its an hardware problem.
I have the same problem ...
Have had my Note 4 since November 2014. And it havebeen working flawless, running rooted and everything Until yesterday when i was just casually using my phone and it started to lag and restart, no difference whatever rom. So i tried for a whole day to get it into official firmware with alot of error messages in the progress about the internal memory etc, i ended up repartitioning, and modifying my PIT-file until i finally got it working. And the same issues did still exist. Now the thing that seemed to work for me was to change battery, now it seems to run again without lagging, or anything. Tho it wont restart properly without restarting twice by itself..

Im getting the same, i guess you could try it. But from what ive read it seems like the only fix is for samsung to exchange your phone, or change motherboard.
Good luck with samsung fixing it. I sent it in 4 times and each they responded "no problem found". I gave up and bought a moto e.

Yesterday i flashed my phone again, this time with a PIT file and repartitioning checked. Eveything went fine but the phone went into recovery booting bootoop initially but started on its own after a few bootloops. It worked fine for sometime, but when i entered my samsung account and it started to restore my msgs, call logs and apps, after 1 hour or so it started to freeze all over again. I am starting to think that some app could be a reason too. Now i will flash again and keep using it without restoring my old phone and installing only a few essential apps and see what happens
---------- Post added at 03:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:26 AM ----------
I also installed an app from the play store EMMC brickbug check but it says that my NAND chip is sane (fine i guess)
Same happens to to my note 4 snapdragon phe.
Any updates ? Did anyone got it back fixed from Samsung?
Good luck
My T-mobile Note 4 started experiencing this same issue last week. Is this a coincidence or something more? For everyone with the same issue, has your phone been slightly warmer at the top?
I purchased a new Anker battery to see if that will resolve the issue and will test it when it comes. But I think the emmc is starting to go bad? It seems to work fine without a SIM card inserted also.
I just received from samsung that they need to replace the motherboard, and of course the warranty isnt covering up since i rooted it. And they're going to want 540 USD from me to do that. Sigh, last phone i bought from samsung for sure.

Random restarts after updated to nougat :/

So i updated a few days ago to nougat, everyhing went fine now as of yesterday my edge suddenly random reboots for no reason? i dont get it.. i have tryied clear cache from partition and even did a factory reset still nothing.... what can the problem be ? it never restarted before the update so clearly something messed up my phone after that but how..... i hate this any fix for this?
I don't have such experience and seems initially you did not have either.
Do you use stock/unrooted?
Do you use whatsapp gifs?
yes im stock no root or dont plan to either.. using whatsapp but no gifs why ?? this really sux
I'm having this problem too. 2 random reboots last week. Today it rebooted and because I had secure startup enabled it got stuck in the "enter pin" screen, so the alarm didn't work and arrived 2hs. late to work.
Hello,
Same for me
went back to 6.0.1 and the problem is still there.. OMG i give up on samsung god dammit... worst luck ever my old S5 was better then this
Hi,
I have experienced this on my new S7 Edge today, 2 random reboots. Did any of you manage to get to the bottom of this probem?
Thanks
Hello I have a Galaxy S7 and since the update to Android Nougat 7.0, my phone restarts randomly, it can stay an entire week without restart and it can also restart 2 days in a row. It's totally random. I have reset to the factory settings and I have reinstalled only the most important applications (facebook messenger, viber, yahoo mail) but unfortunately about ten days after reset, the problem has reappeared. What could be the cause of this problem? For info, the firmware version installed on my phone is: G930FXXU1DQBO. Also, I saw on SamMobile that the countries that received the update later, had a new version. Could the problem come from that? Is this a bug in the firmware installed on my Galaxy S7. Thank you in advance for your help.

Had that issue with my Note edge after updating FW to stock 6.01, many threads in Note edge forum report the same. Samsung gave a s..,,,t , never fixed it.
Maybe Whatsapp? Or SIM card?
I had the same issue, but worse. Between 15 and 30 random reboots a day, during calls, during emails, during sleep. Often (and every morning) I picked up the phone and it said it had a reboot, therefore no finger print wakeup etc. After a ton of googling, Wipe Cache, Safe Mode and all that (changed nothing) I ordered a new SD card. Changed nothing. Then I did a factory reset, re-installed all apps via Google backup. Changed nothing. Meanwhile Samsung customer support tells me to send in the phone, may take a few weeks - haha. So I did another factory reset, but then only re-installed the most necessary apps (although I don't want to have a flagship phone and not install whatever i want). Changed nothing. Still 15-30 reboots a day. Plus a seriously bad battery life, maybe because of the reboots, or nougat, or both. Enough for me, and all the more reason not to buy S8. I ordered a Mate9Pro, which is not as gorgeous as the S8, but at least big, 6GB RAM, fastest chip around and has a 4000mAH battery. However, after re-installing all my apps on Mate9Pro and putting my SIM in there (runs smoothly), Whatsapp (without the SIM) kept popping up on the S7. So I uninstalled. While I was at it, I also uninstalled airline apps (Air Berlin, easyjet, Lufthansa, Miles&More - don't ask why). Since then, no reboot on the S7 (8 hours so far, but that's the longest period since the Nougat update). So the maximum damage has been done (had to buy a new phone), and now the old phone works just fine. Maybe it was Whatsapp, or another app causing it to fail? Or the SIM card? I have no clue but maybe someone with some knowledge can make sense of it?
I was having the same problem after nougat update. I noticed that after the reboot I would have notifications from specific apps like airasia app , I shut off notifications from almost all except a few important apps. Reboot no. has drastically reduced since then.
