You should first of all install this recovery: "philz touch recovery" Look for threads on this forum and youtube videos how to do it, follow this exactly and properly because this part you don't want to mess up.
When done with that you want to take a backup with "philz touch recovery" there is also guides and videos on how to do that.
Both this things are pretty easy but just be carefull you do them right.
When that is done you will install your ROM, that is very easy. Download ROM to your SD card and use an app like "ROM customizer" to install the ROM. There might be different installs for different ROMS' all ROMs have their own guides, but most of them are pretty much the same.
Just read and you will know everything about how to do this very soon.

I don't think there is much to worry about.
The ROM you want to install supports your version. The recovery should do too.
Just make sure you do everything right when installing the recovery and you should be fine.
Any mistake after that can be repaired with your recovery.
Root is all you need. You should not need to unlock anything else. And don't worry about KNOX.
If your bootloader is locked, then I don't know how to solve it. But I don't think it's locked, only a few service providers in the world lock the bootloaders.
If it is I'm very sorry!

I don't know how to see that beforhand. Just try to do the flash and you should see if it works or not.
If it's fail because it's locked you will notice and then nothing will be broken.
If it's not locked you will have a successful flash, which you will see.
I have read about other Canadians installing ROMS and flashing Recovery so I think you will have success!

The Canadian W8 ROM does not have a locked bootloader. It can be rooted, custom recovery can be installed and if you want, ROMs installed.
With Xposed Framework you don't really need custom ROM. Beauty of root is that you can use titanium backup to freeze dozens of bloatware apps from samsung and others, run Xposed, run other apps that need root, fix the stupid kitkat permissions on SD card, backup your ROM etc.
Once rooted you can also use a third party kernel that supports under or over clocking, depending on your need. Custom kernel developers work hard to get you better battery life.
One thing other poster didn't mention is that when you install custom recovery it will trip Knox. Please don't ask what that is. Look it up and decide. Your warranty will be void.

Has anyone been able to get Viper4Android working on 6.0.1?
I have root, busy box, and SU installed and working but Viper refuses to install the driver. Can someone please help?
I have the G900-W8 with Rogers.
Hello all. First off I have a I337m with baseband NE1. I never see this mentioned anywhere and wanted to know what I can do with this phone.
I've rooted already (with towelroot) and wanted to get a custom bootloader. I've read and read then read somemore but found too many mixed staments regarding this.
Can I install a custom bootloader (say through goo manager) without worries or is there more to it? Does it completely overwrite the stock bootloader?
Do I need to worry about Loki?
Can we use other carrier ROMs?
Is it safe to say that everything in this sub forum works with my device?
Im familiar with flashing and the likes coming from the S2 with CM10.2 but there are too many varients and mixed statments (old to new methods) and I can't for the life of me find direction.
This is what I know about the i337m, mind you I don't have the device:
You can root using chainfires cf-auto root
Use trwp manager to install twrp
You can flash any rom here and you don't need Loki

I have the same phone on Telus... as far as the "custom bootloader" I think you really mean custom recovery, I use TWRP version 2.7. You can also use Philz recovery or CWM but I perfer TWRP as it hasnt given me any issues. If you load TWRP don't go for the latest version as I have seen guys have problems with the latest and greatest.
Once you have twrp on your phone... before you do anything else... make a backup in twrp of your current rooted stock rom so you have a starting point. In twrp, I like to do all backups to the external sd card as there may come a time where you do a factory wipe... and poof its gone...
In the developement thread... there is a rom called Mapleleaf works very well on this phone... I run it myself with the googy-max3 kernel.
If you decide to flash anything else... make sure it will work for i337m, I have seen people get into trouble flashing things meant for the US version (i337). Our bootloader is unlocked so you don't need saftey strap or loki or other things that the i337 users need.
When in doubt... search the forum... if you find nothing... ask before you do anything strange.
As far as the bootloader goes... try to stay on your current one.. mine is still MK6. Once the bootloader is updated there is no going back... period.....
This helped a lot man, I appreciate it.
So just to clarify, can I use goo manager for the recovery or should I use Odin? And is there any version in particular [TWRP] that I should use? What version are you running?
How do I check my bootloader version?

You can use goo manager or Odin. Just make sure you have the right version. FYI twrp 2.5.0.2 is the most reliable version that I have used for this device.
Tapatalked from California Custom Chrome M&M I337m
If you want an older version of twrp use odin... goomanager will likely try to load the latest version... as for checking which bootloader version you have, download the app phone info from the play store.... here... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo&hl=en
my version of twrp is 2.6.3.1 and it works fine... as stated... 2.5 is also recommended by some of the devs....
My bootloader ends in NE1, does that pose a problem - I rarely see it mentioned anywhere? I took the OTA in case anyone is wondering. Basically, can I flash something that's not NE1?
Also, I've been reading that the ROM that's going to be flashed needs to be the same Android Version as the current one on the phone, is this still true?

This will mean you can flash any rom (for i337m) that is 4.4.2 version of android. You can always go up on android version to bootloader but you can't go down versions unless the bootloader is an earlier version. Since most roms are 4.4.2 or higher, I don't think this should be an issue, not many people are looking to go to an older version of android..... bigger... better and all that...

Is this true, bc I have a bell galaxy 4, 4.4.2 i337m NE1 , I want to install a custom recovery,
but I thought my bootloader was locked because its says write protection enabled on the download screen which I thought
meant the bootloader was locked.

The I337M bootloader is not locked. What you are seeing when you boot after rooting is that you tripped KNOX since new bootloaders are closely tied to KNOX so any violation = tripped KNOX.
I have I337M from Telus with NE1 bootloader (4.4.2) and custom Rom PhoeniX. Everything is great except a newly discovered TD Bank App and inability to link my TD Visa to it...

did you check whether its properly Rooted using SU or Root checker?
Also not all Kitkat compatible Xposed modules are working with Lollipop (esp in Touchwiz)
And what recovery have you installed to flash ROM?
i checked it with root checker app get it through play store... it shows my device is rooted but still i am not able to install omega rom. i rood my mobile with ( CF-Auto-Root-ha3g-ha3gxx-smn900) with odin BASEBAND N900DDUEBOB1. & STILL IT SHOWS STOCK RECOVERY MODE.
You need to flash recovery separately.
If you read instructions in CF Auto Root, they'd have mentioned as Outcomes as (Root + Stock Recovery)
Flash TWRP or Philz after that

How about you flash any custom rom you want and then use root cloak which hides the root from apps you define meaning your banking app can't see that you are rooted.
This way you can be rooted and use banking app. You will need to have xposed installed for this to work. Use Google to read up on root cloak.

Sadly this doesn't work with the Barclay's banking app, I've done a lot of searching to find a solution and nothing
There is a good reason not to use banking apps with root... I wouldn't risk doing that... Also to root and unroot or change the kernel every time is cumbersome

You can search and download stock ROM for your phone, then flash via Odin.
hey guys,
I have a rom flashed on my s4 i9505 (called virgin rom, something like that). I'm using my s4 now because I lost my note 4 on a night out. Thing is, I know that I have no root access, I've checked very thoroughly but I have a rom flashed from when I used to use it. I want to root my s4 now, but to be safe, I just wanted to check: CAN I ROOT MY S4 USING WHATEVER METHOD WITH A CUSTOM ROM ALREDY FLASHED? Do I have to do anything before I go ahead and root my phone, like flash a stock rom or something like that?
Many thanks.
Some ROMs, like cm13.1, can enable root access under developer settings.
If it's not there and you're sure the ROM is not rooted, you could flash supersu from a custom recovery.
Do you have a link to the ROM?

Virgin rom for GTi-9505 is moded GPE rom and SuperSu should come with that rom. You might did un-root in the past. Check with app like root-checker for the root access.
To root, you do not have to go back to stock unless you do not like your GPE rom.
Yep this ROM does have SuperSU but when I go into it, it says that i'm "not rooted properly."

I don't have root access at all, I've confirmed it by checking in every possible way. I really want to root my s4 safely but would it be OK if I rooted my phone using whatever method when my phone has a custom ROM flashed? Can I just root it right now without any worries?

If the phone were mine, I would re-flashing the ROM to see if that restores root access. If that doesn't work and I still want the same ROM, I would flash supersu from recovery to root it.
I understand your worry over bricking the phone. Unfortunately, flashing will carry a risk of bricking the phone.

Before I flashed the SuperSU.zip, SuperSU app was on the phone and it was saying the phone was not rooted properly, but now it's gone after flashing SuperSU.zip. I've tried everything at this stage. Do you think it would be safe to just root the phone now in its current state?:
1. Custom ROM is flashed
2. Clockworkmod as recovery
3. According to terminal emulator, titanium backup and root checker, i HAVE NO PROPER ROOT ACCESS.
Many thanks.

I would not use CWM, I would switch to TWRP and then flash supersu. You may not even have to flash supersu as TWRP may be able to root the phone.
