[Q] ParanoidAndroid ROM Question - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have finally decided that I am going to root my nexus 4, but since I'm new to rooting I have a couple of questions.
My first question is that if I'm already on stock 4.3 so do I still have to update the radio and bootloader like it says in the PA developer forum?
My next question is what are some good kernels that can be used with PA. I was thinking about franco so I could improve the screen colors but I'm not sure if it will be compatible after reading about JSS and JWR.
Any help would be appreciated.

No need to update the radio and bootloader and use the JWR PA Halfbreed Kernel.

The kernel that comes with PA (calibrated halfbreed) is pretty good IMO so basically just factory reset in recovery, flash the ROM, wipe caches and reboot.

Is the kernel already with the ROM? Does this mean I don't have to flash a kernel? If I do need to flash the kernel can someone give me a link to it.
Sorry if my questions seem stupid I'm new to this.

Android 4.2.2 - Settings -> Security error

Good afternoon.
I am using 4.2.2 in my LG Nexus 4. It is rooted with SuperSU and I am using Franco kernel.
Every time I try to enter in Settings -> Security I receive an error. I already tried go back to the default kernel, installed the Clockworkmod recovery and wiped the Dalvik cache and the error continues.
I don't know if there is anyway to export this error report, so here goes the screenshots:
Thank you!
Assertion issues, what rom are you using?
It is not really recommended to flash a custom kernel on the stock rom.

The stock rom only works well with the stock kernel for multiple reasons, I cannot get into detail why custom kernels can be bad for stock ROMS.
I maybe can get to detail if you want me to.

What???
I am running stock ROM with a custom kernel (Franco), as are many others, and it's fine.
A custom kernel is usually just the stock kernel with some modifications (could be a tiny change or something bigger). What's wrong with that?

Its the first time I've seen someone say custom kernels aren't recommended for stock rom. So just curious to find out why that is the case.

It can go well but sometimes something can go wrong so I am saying that it really depends on anything on the device.

Sorry but this doesn't make any sense. Any app, ROM, kernel or whatever could have "issues", it's the same with any software.
Earlier you said that custom kernels shouldn't be used on the stock ROM and that's just nonsense which you don't seem able to justify. What's so special about the stock ROM which makes it less suitable than a custom ROM?
If a custom kernel has been designed purely for a particular custom ROM then maybe that one shouldn't be used on a stock ROM, but you seem to be drastically over-generalising. Most custom kernels are designed for any ROM on the N4, particularly since most custom ROMs are built on exactly the same AOSP base.

[Q] Oppo Find 5 Kernal help.....

Hello XDA,
I am currently running the beta firmware for the oppo find 5, X909EN_13_130531_Beta
I am wanting to install faux123 kernal, meaning i need to install a new recovery as im currently running the stock one,
if i do install CWM and install the faux123 oppo find 5 kernal,
what will happen when oppo releases a new beta firmware? will i be able to get the update? how would i go about getting the update?
thanks guys.
much appreciated.
I think that while updating to a newer beta, the kernel by faux will be simply replaced by the new stock kernel inside the update

Thats true stock will overwrite. Then you should be able to flash faux123 kernel over stock again, most likely anyways unless its a major upgrade to like 4.2 then I'm sure faux will release an up to date kernel himself..

Yep, and actually ... I keep saying this but, the best part about this phone is being able to get stock firmware updates via system recovery, stock or custom. When a new update comes out just download the patch or full zip file and put it on your phone, boot into recovery and flash. As mentioned your custom KernEl will be overwritten by the stock kernEl when you update. But.. both CWM and TWRP allow you to keep your custom recovery when updating, thus allowing you to easily reflash Faux123 kernel if you wanted!

If you just flash the new nightly (and I'd reflash the gapps too) you don't need to wipe anything and you won't loose ant data

What do I flash first? ROM or GAPPS?
I heared some nightlies have issues, is there somewhere I can look to find them?
Will I need to reflash Franco Kernel?
thanks

Lost my Original kernel - Nexus 4

Hello XDA-Developers,
I lost my stock/original kernel from my Nexus 4 Device..
I have now, Franco Kernel 3.4.0-franco.Kernel.nightly.
But, now I wanna try Faux123, how can I get my stock Android Kernel back?
Thanks..
Nexus 4
Build-number: JWR66Y
reflash your stock rom, or flash the stock kernel. a quick search on xda or google will find them for you. btw, you didnt "lose" your stock kernel, you willingly and by your choice gave it up by replacing it with a custom kernel.

flash the last good kernel or another kernel, or reflash your rom.

[Q] How to flash different rom with other kernel?

I'm currently using the i9505 GE ROM but it's causing lots of problems (random reboots, can't make phone calls) so since I am new to custom ROMs I don't know how to safely flash another rom if the one I am using now is using a different kernel. Help

For each rom has instructions on how to install
These are really basic question. You should already have know the awnser for it, before you started flashing.
Forget about kernels etc for a while. It's not important for you.
Just fully wipe and flash the rom you want with the custom recovery.

I know it's basic but I don't know where to find the answers.
So is it safe to flash the stock rom while i'm on a GE faux123 kernel?

Yes you are mixing things up.
A kernel has nothing to do with flashing roms. It doesn't matter on what kernel you are in order to flash.
So forget about kernels, it's not important for you.
