Nexus 4 Recovery "dead android" issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I know there is already a thread out there (which I also posted in), so excuse me for my impatience, but I really want to fix my N4...
So I unlocked my Nexus 4 bootloader, tried to root it, thought I did but then SuperSU failed and failed and failed and I couldnt get it to work. I didnt make a Nandroid backup (silly me). I got sick of it and tried to unroot/lock my N4 again, using the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide. In that guide, I fail on 8:45-ish where he sees the dead android and then accesses the recovery menu by pressing the 3 buttons. My N4 just reboots or shuts down. So here is the deal:
- I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device, only it wasnt rooted when I was finished and after a lot of trying to root it, I wanted to flash stock android on it (4.2.2 according to the guide).
- Everything went well untill I had to factory wipe/reset my N4 (youtube guide at around 8:45). When I press power + volume up + volume down or power + volume down or power + volume up my N4 just either shuts down or reboots. When I try to boot normally I am stuck at the nexus X loading screen.
- Now, I cant boot my nexus, I cant wipe my nexus, I cant access it from the PC using ADB and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I CAN DO.
I signed up specifically for this issue and I feel like such a douche, because it was running smooth with 4.3 and I just wanted to try out more of Tasker...
Please guys!

The correct button combo is volume up and power. Your phone is most likely rebooting or shutting down because you're holding the buttons too long. Press power and then volume up briefly and quickly let go. The menu will appear.

I got ninja'd by El Daddy and can't figure out how to delete my post.

That seems to be a very specific button combo indeed, I tried it so many times before and I failed miserably. Thank you so much.
I should make a back up more often! I have been stressing over this for two days...

In Case Of Emergency!
Hey,
I guess I should have looked before posting in panic..
Just made a new thread, but I will post it here as well!
So, I got my Nexus 10 today. Super nice tablet. I wanted to root it and unlock the bootloader - unlocking the bootloader went fine, and I managed to flash CWM recovery. However, I forgot the enable USB Debugging under developer tools before I started all this..
My question now, how do I get this thing to boot again? And what is the smartest move now to root it?
Thanks!
Did you get this fixed/ sorry for the late response Tapatalk unsubscribed me from my own thread.
This isnt an emergency. But pointless starting a new thread. Ive come from HTC so im new with the nexus series.
What would be the best way to:
Root, install CWM, install rom and kernel.
Ive seen a few different methods, but i just wondered whats the best most efficient way. Any opinions on a rom and kernel would be great to. Stable, smooth and customization aspects are the 3 main things, and wifi must work as i need it for work.
Before its attack the noob, im going out soon thats the only reason i have not researched properly.
thanks
Vizzy
This by far is the best method to unlocking and rooting it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34674424
Also AOKP is stable 4.2.1 with lots of customizable options. But CM10.1 is good as well... Less options to customize though.

I would advise not using a toolkit unless you really must (kinda see little need for them on a Nexus device, but that's just me), but here's a brief rundown of what I do:
- Get Android SDK (not the ADT Eclipse Bundle thing; can use this though but it's like a 20MB vs 400MB download)
- Download USB Drivers and Platform Tools from SDK
- Add platform-tools Folder to Windows PATH (so I can run fastboot and adb commands from anywhere)
- Reboot N10 to Bootloader
- Connect it to PC and install ADB Bootloader driver (downloaded from SDK)
- Unlock Bootloader with fastboot oem unlock command
- Flash TWRP with fastboot command (CWM I guess works too, but I prefer TWRP)
- Reboot into Recovery
- Wipe everything (might have to format Data at first if coming straight from bootloader unlock and reboot to wipe everything else)
- Either transfer the custom ROM, Gapps, and (optional) Kernel zips to a flash drive and hook it to my N10, or adb push said zips to /sdcard
- Flash zips
- Wipe Cache/Dalvik from TWRP
- Reboot and profit
- If your going to install a custom ROM, you don't need to have an already rooted device prior to doing so (you can go straight from pure Stock to Custom)
- My preferred custom ROM is rasbeanjelly and my Kernel is franco.Kernel (rascarlo mentioned he might release an update later today for rasbeanjelly)
- I hear AOKP (and AOKP-based ROM's) has a problem with the navbar in Portrait mode (as in, it doesn't show). Just something to take note of if you use apps that force Portrait (like Google Wallet or Ingress for example)
Ohh I will probs do it that way then.
I already have fastboot and SDK installed on my laptop for my HTC can these be used or do I need specifics for the nexus 10? Obviously I'll need drivers for the n10 but is everything else the same as I already have.

How can I factory reset when I forgot my owner password?
Embarrassing situation...
I am the owner of a Nexus 10 that is set for multiple users. I got bored late the other night and changed my screen lock from a pattern to a password. It is now 3 days later I still can't recall the password. My wife does not employ a screen lock so I can still access her "side". Unfortunately, she is not the owner and therefore does not have "Factory Data Reset" as an option.
What are my options?
Factory Reset by going into the Bootloader.
If your tablet is on, power it off.
Press and hold Power until the device powers on, then immediately press and hold Volume Down (while still pressing Power). You will see the word Start with an arrow drawn around it.
Press Volume Down twice to designate Recovery mode.
Press Power to restart into Recovery mode. You will see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark.
While holding down Power, press Volume Up.
Use the volume keys to scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" and press Power to select it.
Scroll down to "Yes - erase all user data" and press Power to select it.
Note: If at any point during the above steps your tablet becomes unresponsive, you can restart it by holding down the power button for several seconds.

Hi, i post here because didn't find any other post open and about this problem... Is about Bluetooth earphones. In have two, one sennheizer mm100 and another Philips shb7110/10. My nexus 10 didn't see any of them. I use to use them with my galaxy tab (P1000) and they work pretty well.
Any tip?
Thanks in advance.
Is it just
'adb push romname.zip'
Then
'adb push kernel.zip'

Hi everyone
My first post here. I have purchased the Nexus 10, great piece of kit but today it just froze and turned off. I can't turn it back on at all I have tried:
Holding power button for more than 30 seconds (up to 2 minutes)
Holding the power button and vol down
Holding the Power button + vol up and down at the same time
Whenever I connect a power cable to the table and press the power button I see the battery icon on the center of the screen. Does anyone know what I can do?
Thanks

I'm new to nexus family too and had a lot of problems with it. (Never have problems but this recovery cost me a lot of time).
The solution is:
When you are EXACTLY at the red exclamation mark screen.
1) Press and hold POWER
2) Press volume UP.
That should show the options in less than 2 seconds.

I am experiencing the same "no command" issue, already tried the volume up + power and nothing happens, if I flash CWM touch 6.0.3.1 everything works but I can't go back to stock recovery no matter what, any advise?
Already flashed stock recovery using Wugfresh's Nexus Root toolkit but the "no command" problem persists.
Thank you.

it's power then volume up. you're doing it the wrong way. you need to press power first and while pressing on that you press volume up

Yeap, same thing, I press and hold the power and then I press the volume up, nothing happens. I even formatted the phone completely using the 4.2.2 image from google, nothing, the no command error keeps coming up, the only way to have a recovery is flashing CWM touch.
---------- Post added at 10:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:44 AM ----------
I've got my N4 maybe a month ago, I installed the 4.2.2 OTA as soon as I got it, the I proceeded to unlock it and root it, one day someone recommended to clear the cache of the phone using the stock recovery (which I thought I had / to fix another problem that I was having) I went to fastboot and tried to access recovery, BOOM, just an android laying down with a red exclamation mark, no "no command" error at all. I downloaded CWM touch and flashed it using Nexus Root Toolkit, that worked fine, but I didn't want a custom recovery and also I needed to fix a 3G latency problem that I was having, after some reading I saw that someone recommended a full flash using the stock google image.
A couple of days I proceeded to flash the factory image, I installed it, after that I did a factory reset from android itself. After doing all that I wanted to clear the cache with the stock recovery just in case, BOOM, an an android laying down with a red exclamation mark and this time with a "no command" error. Tried the trick of holding the power and pressing the volume up, NOTHING HAPPENS!
Right now I am using CWM Touch.
Any suggestion?
Thank you.
No real solution??? Sad...

Nothing, this answer is unhelpful
I have this issue as well. I tried to "unroot" my N4 (and Im a noob at this), and I think I did something wrong because when I access recovery mode from the bootloader I see the "dead android" but no matter what I do I dont see the control/menu. I tried:
- holding all buttons at the same time
- holding the power button and the down button (in sequence)
- holding the power button and the up button (in sequence)
So now I can not boot my Nexus, I can not wipe my Nexus and I can not access it from the PC. I was running 4.3 and I used the "How to Unroot Nexus 4 to Stock 4.2 Jelly Bean on Windows!" youtube guide ( I am not allowed to post links) to unroot my device (nexus 4), where I fail at 8:45, I simply dont see that menu popping up. Instead, my Nexus shuts down or reboots.
Please help
Is there no fix for this?
I decided to go back to stock to get 4.3. I flashed 4.2.2 using the Nexus toolkit and then got 4.3 via an OTA after this I rooted my phone. As the OTA worked I would imagine that the stock recovery was working. When I tried to install the latest OTA I got the no command issue. I can flash cwm recovery no problem. But when I try to flash stock recovery either via a toolkit or via fastboot command it does not work - no command. And holding in power and then volume up doe nothing. Any advice? I suppoe I cando a full wipe flash the stock 4.3 image and see if this helps. Has anyone had any success fixing this problem?
I have the same issue.
Even when trying to get to stock recovery through Nexus Root Toolkit gets me a NO COMMAND screen.
It seems like the recovery is not there.
Still looking for an answer - any help?

When you get the no command prompt do the following.
Press and hold the power button followed by pressing and holding the volume up button. Release only the volume up button after 2 seconds and you will be in recovery.

Seems that you have the stock recovery installed (that Android laying on its back with a red triangle is the stock recovery).
If I'm not missunderstanding your issue, it shouldn't really be an issue but it's just like how it should be.

"No Command" issue solved for Zuum 9330
I want to thank every one of you guys. I had same issue with my phablet. By reading your comments I got ideas to try some key combinations, and factory reset my phone. Here is what I did:
1) Power down the phone
2) Press and hold "volume up", then Press and hold "power" button until Android logo with the message "no command" shows up
3) Press and hold "volume down", then Press "back" button then release "back" button and the menu will show up. Then release "volume down".
4) use "volume up" or "volume down" to navigate menu
5) to execute selection, use "home" button
I hope it helps someone.
If so, please tell me.
Total first timer, flash to stock as had messed up sd card partition trying to flash custom ROM, really worried when couldn't access recovery after stock flash. Thank you thank you thank you, this totally worked!!!
thank you a lot. saved my phone. i thought i will through away the nexus 4 but the combination of no command power button and volume up did well
Hope this helps, you press and release volume up! worked perfectly
Performing a factory reset may take some time, so make sure that you plug your device into a power source before you start. If your phone becomes unresponsive at any point during these steps, you can restart it by holding down the Power button for several seconds.
If your phone is on, turn it off.
Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time until the device turns on. You'll see the word "Start" with an arrow around it.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "Recovery".
Press the Power button to restart into Recovery mode. You'll see an image of an Android robot with a red exclamation mark and the words "No command".
While holding down the Power button, press and release the Volume Up button once.
Press the Volume Down button twice to highlight "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Power button to select it.
Press the Volume Down button seven times to highlight "Yes - erase all user data" and press the Power button to select it.
After the reset is complete, press the Power button to select the option to reboot your device.
When you've finished, follow these steps to restore your data.

Nexus 10 stuck in bootloop "X"

hello
after i try to unlock the bootloader my nexus stuck in "X" (with toolkit 2.0)
and the recovery mod is not work (Attachments)
I had the same problem when unlocking mine, reboot into fast boot and use the volume buttons to change the select option to recover and hit power, you should get a picture of an android with a red triangle that's normal , then try a couple times to hit the power and both volume buttons to boot into the stock recovery and then do a full wipe and factory reset (wipe both cache and dalvik cache just yo be safe) you may have to do this more then once, I did but it fixed the problem

Just get back into recovery and factory reset. This is a common issue when unlocking bootloader.
Please help as I seem to have placed my Nexus 10 into a Bootloop state through Nexus Root Toolkit 1.6.8 by WugFresh. I have been attempting to enter into Recovery following the steps outlined here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239524). However, the tablet never seems to enter Recovery mode. At best I get a blank screen that eventually comes around to an unusable Bootloader. By unusable, I mean the volume buttons do not progress through the options. If select Recovery on a functional Bootloader and simply press the Power button. The tablet will cycle through to an Android with the red symbol.
Now the Toolkit no longer even see's my device even though Win 8 Device Manager shows the Android Bootloader Interface. There are no devices listed with the exclamation point warning symbol.
This is only my third attempt at Unlocking and Rooting a device. The first two times were successful on an HTC phone and a Samsung Tab 7". I do not know where to go from here and really need help fixing my Nexus 10.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.
Edit: I figured out how to access Recovery. I needed to use power + volume up once on the screen with the Android avatar and red symbol.

Before discovering how to enter Recovery properly, I did end up flashing to stock. Unfortunately, I am unable to get ADB to recognize my Nexus 10 using Wug's scripts, even though the ADB installer see's the unit. I believe this is a Windows 8 issue, but I am not 100% positive. That said, I did further research and found another method using the Fastboot command line which did work. My Nexus 10 is now unlocked and rooted. I wish I had kept the thread's URL to the other method.
I wonder if my issue's come from not uninstalling the Samsung G3 through device manager as I did my Nexus 10. I did uninstall though the USB app found within Wug's, but that may not have been enough. That is certainly something I shall try in the future.

[Q] Can I root from a bugged nexus 7?

Before I begin I must say I've never used an android device in my life so this is all completely new to me. The only experience I've had was rooting and installing CM or something similar to an iphone 3gs a few years ago.
I'm aware a lot of people are having problems with their nexus 7 hanging at the animated rainbow-colored X screen. I've seen the suggestion to hold power and vol up/down to get to the restore factory default settings - but that doesn't show. Mine just shuts off. I've tried going to the bootloader screen via power+vol up/down while the machine was off but nothing ever happens. The nexus just stays powered off. Also, if I hold power while it's hanging on the rainbow X, nothing happens - it doesnt even shut off. In order to turn it off I have to hold power+vol up/down.
I have not rooted or installed any ROMs on this android yet. But I do want to. I am curious if I can somehow root and flash my nexus.
If someone can point me in the right direction on how to start this from a basically dead nexus 7, please enlighten me. I've read through a few instructional threads so far but they all start off with the nexus 7 being able to fully start.
Please advise.
Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I tried entering safe mode, didn't work
- Press/Hold Power button until Google screen shows up, RELEASE Power button
- Press/Hold VolDn until Android has booted up
The device doesn't even boot up in safe mode. Still hangs on the rainbow x.
Got into bootloader using these instructions while n7 off:
- Power+VolUp while booting to enter recovery
- You can release buttons after you see Google on screen
selected Recovery.
It turned off then on, showed the Google screen, and now shoes an android fallen over with "No command." shown underneath and am continuing..
edit: wiped and restarted. can now finally root. thanks bud.

[Q] safe mode, getting to fastboot, and returning to stock

I'm having reral trouble gettng my n4 into fastboot. all the buttons work, vol up, vol down and the power on all work fine but if I try and press all 3 simultaneously I just boot the device normally. I've managed to get to fast boot just once in 2 dozen tries. what is the trick? I've tried pushing all 3 at once, I've tied pressing both vol up and down, holding thm, then pressing and holding the power button too. always just vibrates, and boots normally.
just now while trying on the last attempt it booted normally but the screen had 'safe mode' in the bottom left corner. that freaked me a bit. turned it off, then on again and it went away. wtf is 'safe mode' and how did I get it?
I want to...I think...root and flash a rom the proper way, step by step using efrant's guide on here, rather than a script from the toolkit, but since I can't seem to get to fastboot I'm stuck
this is all just to get to 4.3 really....I rooted using the toolkit and OTA updates haven't been running so still on 4.2.1 and thought I should sort that out. had a bit of a 'mare l2 nights agot when I unlocked the bootloader to go about returning to stock and forgot that would wipe the device...losing lat weeks holiday photos in the process I think the tool kit and one press type 'unlock, flash this, flash that etc etc' commands lulled me into not thinking for myself so perhaps I ought to do this properly!
BTW, I'm currently with a locked bootloader, stock 4.2.1 rom, stock recovery reflashed, no su binary (cinfirmed by attempting to run SU app, and it not finding the binary). I've been waiting for the OTA update to push to the device again (I've forced checkins but to no avail) to attempt to run it, should it run properly now or have I to do something more?
You need to hold power and volume down, if that doesn't work then try adb reboot boot loader

thanks. tried holding volume down and then also power as well and again it booted normally. looks like adb commands it is then. bit of a pain to have to hook to a pc to do this....not that I'm a regular custom rom flasher/swapping between roms and nandroid backups etc but it would be handy....I learnt that with my old desire.
has anyone else had problems getting there holding the buttons?
oh and I found what safe mode is from the google nexus 4 site. a mode where the apps don't work so you can check for problems that they may be causing. how I got to it doesn't match with the descried way though...just a weird glitch I guess.
okay I'm all sorted for now. I used the toolkit and flashed the entire set of stock .img after downloading the archive from google
now on 4.3, and as far as I can see that is with stock recovery, system, radio the lot. I've left it unrooted (so no su binary, no busy box, no su app - although the phone is currently synching and downloading my apps again..I guess this will come too) so if I understand things correctly future OTAs will run.
I've left the bootloader unlocked as efrant, in his 'how to' guide says
'Do NOT re-lock your bootloader after you are finished. The is no need. 2) Having an unlocked bootloader does not affect anything related to the ROM/GoogleWallet/OTAs. Nothing at all.' and he explains that unlocking in the future to enable fastboot commands to work and hence flash roms in the future results in a wipe of data. So...I think...I'm up to date, stock, safe and future OTAs will run....i hope. I do understand though, that should the device need to back to Google I should relock the bootloader first or they will know I've been playing around (where possibly I shouldn't!)
okay....think I can go ahead and set up again. :victory:
Ooo good! and whatever I've done I can get into the bootloader fine now :victory: simply holding vol down and then pressing and holding the power button now works every time. good.
