BEST Recovery Option - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hello,
I've been out of the Android game for a while. A couple years ago when I had my Samsung Fascinate, CWM was the go-to name in custom recovery options. Now after returning to the scene with this new Nexus 7, I'm seeing TWRP and a bunch of other recoveries I've never seen before.
I've flashed this TWRP thing and it's really fancy looking with plenty of options. However, it seems to lack a solid app like CWM's that allows you to search for and update not only your ROMs, but flash the newest recoveries as well.
So what's the case here? Did CWM lose some ground? Or is it still a better choice than the competition?
Let me know what you think.

GooManager is what you're looking for. I personally prefer to do things myself manually instead of using ROM Manager, GooManager, Recovery Manager, Nandroid Manager, Backup Manager, toolkits, etc.

Which recovery is better?

Guys which recovery is better- Amon RA or Clockwork? What is the difference b/w the two?
both are good at getting the job done. but clockwork is much better overall since it integrates with ROM manager and automates everything for you. definitely try out clockwork.
i've had issues with clockwork recently, personally I use Amon_Ra, but both are VERY similar almost identical

What type of issues?
Only reason I dont use Clockwork is because it works well with ROM Manager it auto updates my ROM and that is just annoying But really I cant seem to find any major differences between the two

It didn't wipe a previous rom correctly.
Amon 's recovery gives me a feeling that it was designed for Nexus One
clockwerk's recovery gives me the opposite feeling, it was designed for all devices.
amon's recovery is easier to use, yet powerful enough for doing everything
clockwerk's recovery provides more options and detailed functionalities, but we usually don't use them all.
amon's UI is more easy and obvious to use than clockwerk's
if you don't rely on rom manager, I personal suggest using Amon's

Personally I think that the strong point of clockworth is the integration with ROM manager. In the other hand, I think Amon`s RA is more clear and has enough power to complete any task. The two are good, but I prefer Amon`s.
It`s your choice. Try both and decide.
I started using clockwork for some time. I gotta say I love the ROM Manager integration and the ability to go through folders so you don't have to always have what you're trying to flash on the root of your sd card. just recently though while restoring a backup clockwork just froze. I let it sit thinking it was just taking a while but after a good while I just pulled the battery. I went back to restore and it flew by quickly, restoring the rom just fine. this has happened twice already and it never happened with amon's recovery. I agree with houzuoguo when he said it feels like amon's was built for the nexus and clockwork was built for multiple devices.
I like clockwork for 1 reason. I love the comfirmation window he uses. A buch of no's then a yes are u sure.
Example:
No
No
No
No
No
No
No
Yes - This action can not be reversed
No

It amuses me.

I win! lol. But he does has a point.
Amon Ra is more stable/reliable; clockwork has the integration with ROM manager.
Personally, it annoys me that I can't even do the simple things like "check for updates" and "download ROM" without having clockwork flashed first. I don't get why, those are not functions needing the recovery; let me at least check updates and download them. I can do the flashing manually with my recovery of choice. I guess its an effort to get market share and reliance on the app, leading to more sales for the more feature rich paid app. So I avoid clockwork on principal. Not that I don't want to support dev's, I do, but this seems underhanded to me. Gimping every feature, whether they depend on recovery functionality or not.
Ok thnx everybody..
I think I should stick with Amon only..

[Q] What to do after rooting?

I perma-rooted my T-Mobile G2, but now I'm lost.
Since I can't flash official ROMs, what can I do to update OS? Are there any options besides CM7? If I switch to CM7, does it mean I lose all my previous installations? And does it mean I'm stuck with CM forever? When do you expect official version of CM7 to be released?
Thank you in advance.
You can flash any ROM you want. There are many good solid ones in the Development forum here and other android forums of course.
If you're looking to back up your apps before you install a ROM (because you must wipe all data when installing new ROMs) I'd advise you download an app called Titanium Backup. I use it regularly when switching ROMs and it really is necessary. This can back up all apps, app data, and even system data if you want. You can then restore after flashing your new ROM.
CM7 is at RC-1 (Release Candidate) which means that it has been declared stable enough with few enough bugs for the general public. I've personally been running nightlies for a few weeks now with no issues, and the RC-1 seems to be similar. There really is no date for when it will become an official release, but if you're up for waiting that's totally understandable.
If you don't wanna go with the CM7 RC route, you can always go to one of the other Sense-based ROMs, or even CM6 which has been extremely stable for a long time now. You can always just check out one of the stock 2.2 roms as well, they're often optimized with no bloatware and often run quicker than the stock ROM with perm root you have now.
Changing ROMs is easy, and just because you decide one doesn't mean you can't switch to another. Just use the app "ROM manager" to backup, wipe, and install different ROMs as you see fit.
Basically which ROM you choose is up to you. Just look through the dev forum and check out the offerings, read then ask questions and try them out. I definitely recommend reading some of the stickies about backing up/flashing/etc. before you get going.
Kinda hard for me to give more info because it seems like you're pretty new. I'd just advise that you read up on everything and always do backups before you flash any ROM or update in order to restore if you run into issues.

1. Download and install ROM Manager and within ROM Manager flash ClockworkMod Recovery. This will allow you to create and restore complete backups of your phone. This should be the first thing you do. Second, create a backup (a Nandroid). It will be almost impossible to screw things up permanently with ClockworkMod Recovery installed and a backup on your sd card.
2. After you have a backup created, you can start trying different ROMs and if you don't like it, just try another one or restore your backup. You can even have multiple backups of different ROMs and switch back and forth if you want.
3. You are going to see a lot of references to gapps, which is short for Google Apps. Many ROMs come pre-loaded with gapps - Cyanogen was stopped by Google from incorporating them into his ROM's so the package is made available to flash immediately after you flash a CM ROM. Once you log in to Google with your account (use the same one every time) all your market apps will start downloading from the market automatically - that is all the apps that you had actively installed before you switched ROMs. Your phone will be sluggish at first while it updates all your market apps. To backup apps that you've installed from your sd card, download Titanium backup.
4. Now that you're rooted you aren't stuck with anything. Your options are wide open. Just look over the XDA site. It'll be obvious how much you can do with your phone now.
I'm on CM7 now and its very stable. Download build #41 - 42 should be out by the morning. If you decide to go with that, you won't believe how much more your phone has to offer than the stock ROM. I don't believe you'll ever want to go back to stock again, but if you do there's information here in the forums to do that including unrooting your phone.
I agree with this, read about the different roms in the G2 Development Section especially.
It's a bit confusing with all the roms, but as long as you backup your rooted setup now, you should be free and fine to try several different ones. (See step 1 about by EdKeys).
I recommend purchasing Titanium Backup...it will allow you to reinstall all your apps relatively quickly and keep all saves/settings.
Try out a sense rom (for example Virtuous) as well as CM7. I tried out sense before, but it makes the phone feel slow despite being very cool. When I first rooted my G2 I went straight for Cyanogenmod 6.1.1, as it was the stable version. Cyanogenmod 7 RC1 is way better.
Good luck and I hope you find something you like!
I highly recommend Virtuous.
Also, this isn't stated anywhere normally, so I'll share with you: I absolutely suggest using ROM Manager for most everything - it's a GUI for Clockworkmod, basically, and makes things a bit easier.
HOWEVER
The only ROMs you'll find in ROM Manager are ones that the developer has submitted. Not all devs care that much, so you'll find a TON more ROMs to try in the Development subforum. To flash one of those, simply download the .zip file of the ROM to your memory card (it doesn't matter where, you could put it on the root or you could create a 'romstotry' folder if you wanted).
Once you have the zip file on your memory card, open ROM Manager, choose 'Install Zip from SDcard' and show ROM Manager which zip file you want to use. IT'll then pop up and ask if you want to wipe, and if you want to backup your current ROM.
If you're switching between two different ROMs, you *always* want to wipe. Always. If you're simply installing a new version of the ROM you currently have installed, you don't *need* to wipe (unless the dev specifically says that you need to, so read the changelogs), but it's a good idea to do so anyways. You'll have a bit more setup to do, but wiping will prevent most problems that people seem to have.
hope that helps.
Thank you very much all. I installed CM 7 RC1 and it works great. I will try other ROMs when I get familiar with CM.

Hi - the first thing I did after perma-root was change the boot animation for my G2 - you can do it by hand, or you can use an application located in market - just search for 'boot animation.'
After that's it's straight to the custom ROMs - I'm using Sense Virtuous 1.0.0 and loving it.

Question about CWM vs TWRP

I am real new to the KindleFire community but so far loving my Kfire. I see in slot of posts they say to use TWRP to install or update a ROM. Since I have CWM installed can I use it instead are they interchangeable for installing files?
Hope that make sense.
Thanks
Rod
most people are taking about twrp because it was the first recovery for the kf
cwm is quite new for the kf
you can use both to install roms ...
Cwm is able to be updated by current developers. Twrp looks cool, but just needs to be updated. If someone updates the reboot wrappers it'd be a winner. But I do like and prefer cwm

Is there or link or how-to to swtich from TWRP to CWM? Does CWM have all the features as TWRP? I have been using TWRP since I rooted the KF, have used it to back up, flash new roms to try out, flash back to my backup. CWM does all this, just dosn't have the nice CWM interface?

The easiest way is to use THIS method, just be sure to unzip the file on your Kindle rather than on a computer or it may not work correctly. The only difference I've noticed between CWM and TWRP is that CWM does not compress the backup so the file is a lot bigger, my backups used to be in the low 500mb range and now they are in the low 800's.
Any particular reason to migrate to CWM? I have TWRP from the first day ant it doing a job very well. So, did CWM have any new features?

Development should be the main reason imo I think the interface looks way better. I got annoyed by the flickering backlight with twrp. It does all the same things, but cwm looks better. Plus before I switched, twrp wouldn't flash roms or gapps all the time, it would get stuck and I would have to reboot

For me there was not a reason to use TWRP as I have been using CWM for the last several years on smartphones and was more comfortable with it. I also read several articles where people had issues with TWRP so with as much problems as I was having trying to root my kindle because of USB driver I wanted to stick with something I know. So I thought it best to stick with and old friend I was used too. Not saying one is better than the other I just like CWM better for me and think it gives me more options to perform operations on my phone and kindle.

How have the pros and cons changed with the intro of TWRP 2.1? I am currently using CWM touch but prefer the TWRP interface, but don't want to sacrifice any features.

all the reboot option in twrp are still broken so Cwm is still the way to go and mabe im ocd but i like haveing Cwm on my phone and tablet plus you dont have to worry about accidenty hiting reboot to recovery and being in a boot loop
different versions of CWM touch?
I just switched from CWM touch (DooMLorD) v1.0 Final to v5.0.2.7-kf1.5 I was wondering what the differences are? I tried the Change UI color feature, but it doesn't seem to work, just stays red. is there something I'm missing? and what else was changed?

P.S. I realize this probably belongs in the DEV thread, but I can't post there yet YAY For Noobs!!

Opinions on CWM recovery

I will be receiving my Nexus 7 this week and would like to get some opinions on which CWMR seems the best based on user accounts. I'm conducting a poll to see which one everyone prefers. I've always been partial to the original CWMR but would like to change it up a bit. If you vote please tell me why you like the one you use over the others available. This will give us some insight on the pros and cons of each version.
None of them. CWM 5.8.0.2 Touch flashed via boot loader. Doing full backups each time is slow but I've found 6.0.1.0 less favourable to me.
you should consider twrp recovery. its also touch based, has more feature than cwm, much less buggy than cwm, and overall much more user friendly.
Thanks for the comments! I am considering TWRP since I hear good things about it. I also read that it compresses backups to save space. Just little nervous about touch driven recovery, I might touch the wrong selection by accident. I did that once installing recovery on my girls captivate with rom manager. Luckily I was able to reflash the correct version without any problems.
TWRP.... touch just lets you select what you want. You confirm most selections by using a slide approval. Compression works well. Now can name backups.
Started using on the KF and then my HTC Rezound where CWM had issues when the phone battery got low and would not let it charge.
In your poll, not sure what CWMR- TWRP 2.2.1 is supposed to be. TWRP is from TeamWIN not CWM
http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103
I'm still on stock in the meantime, in-case there's more OTA updates this month.
From what I've read, TWRP is what I will mostly likely go with at the end of the month. Heard too much bad things about CWM's blobs taking up space and not being deletable, especially if you only want to carry one nandroid backup at a time.

Yeah I know...hehe I tried to edit my poll but was unable to. I guess the term of CWM to me is the means of flashing roms and doing backups. Sorry Team Win did not mean to generalize. I'm just glad we have TWRP as another option.

Few questions, new to android

Coming from iphone, it is quite different when it comes to flashing.
1.) While rebooting to recovery mode, it does not boot into TWRP. Instead it goes into manual mode.. Menu is similar to rom manager where you use the side buttons and power to navigate. How do I get into TWRP?
2.) Are there any roms that support the new s4 features such as air gestures?
3.) Other than removing bloatware, are there any good features for flashing to a custom rom? I saw one I like which was app2sd. I know some roms just have bare minimum and it's purpose is just to run faster than the stock os.
4.) Currently running the stock 4.2.2 on my s4, you guys recommend any roms for me to try out? What are the popular ones out right now?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
Hey there, i just got my s4 so i havent done much with it yet, but very familiar with samsung devices so lets see if i can help.
1. TWRP has to be installed. Have you read the guides? TWRP is not default recovery, and it sounds to me like you havent made that step. Search the forums for guides and all the tools you need. Just remember, there is always a risk of soft/hard bricking.
2. Most all TW based roms should support/include the samsung features you are referring too. That being said you wont get those features in roms that arent TW based.
3. Removing bloatware, custom kernels that allow for OC/UV, different looks to the UI, there are a very large number of reasons to flash a custom rom, just remember, you will usually have to sacrifice something to gain something else, but not always. If you want a stripped out rom that runs smoother and faster than stock, you will probably lose TW and all the features that go with it.
4. You really just have to find one you like.

If you're new to Android flashing and whatnot, I would advise a simple TW based ROM that's de-bloated at least to start off with. I'd recommend Mint Jelly (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2312001) which is a nice, Touchwiz based ROM, but includes the NottachXposed framework for customization and KTweaker if you want to play with the kernel settings a bit. It has all Samsung apps included but the AT&T ones removed (can be re-downloaded from google play)
I would suggest trying the GoldenEye ROM with the Domination theme, it's probably as close to stock AOSP as you can get while keeping your TW features. I honestly can't see any reason to change ROMs ever again since I've been on this combo.
Both roms are very good starters.
OP-sounds as if you do not have any recovery installed.

That is the recovery screen, you are properly rooted correct? I would pull the battery for 5min, and then try to get back into recovery.
many roms can run for you, once you accomplish getting into recovery. first thing you should do is do a complete backup in recovery, so that will be out of the way. Then try other roms.

Yes, if by properly rooted you mean using motochopper to root my phone. I am just trying to access my recovery screen, but it just hangs there. I am trying to get my first nandroid backup and hopefully flash it. I am still on my stock OS, have not flashed my phone yet.
