Has anyone been able yet to just type their destination and have maps navigate like it used to? I'm beyond disgusted with this update. I have to Google the address, select navigate from the web results, select the route, then select start, and if -IF- maps works then it misses my first several turns and announces them late. If it force closes "unfortunately Google maps has stopped responding" I have to repeat these steps 3-5 times. Not to mention my favorites and local have also stopped working properly. This is asinine.
Any work arounds or am I going to have to downgrade?

Hmm, not to sound rude, but, doesn't this question belong in the Google Maps section of XDA?

Not to sound b*tchy (here it comes; see 'no offense' rules) but I'm unable to locate anything like that as I'm using a phone, not to mention I'm wondering if its the ROM, kernel, or any of the various other things on the device. The people I seem to get the most educational and informative information from are people in this specific thread.
If you could link to the forum or ask a mod to move the thread that too would help as I have zero control once the thread is posted as to where it stays or is located to.
Also thanks for all your wildly informative help and knowledge on the maps issue. Much appreciated.

May I suggest uninstalling the updates and going back to the default version to see if that solves the problem?
I have not used Maps for navigation lately but typing in a destination and getting a route seems to be working just fine.
I used maps the other day to get to my doctors. Then from my doctors I used maps again to get me to a restaurant. Bot times it worked perfectly! Maybe try out a different ROM/Kernel. Or try out a different navigation app.
I agree. I use it on 4.3 daily with no problems. Yes the update did do away with the navigation app that came with maps when you download it but it's integrated into the Google maps app. Type destination, hit the navigation button, choose route, then hit start. No problems with it here but I was wondering what happen to the nav app at first until I opened maps up and saw that it was built into it now.

I've seen several other (via Google) people with similar issues and none of the hardware/software I have meanwhile there's people that do have my ROM (Carbon) or kernel (Ktoonsez) or both and it runs well... I've downgraded for now until I can figure out a better solution... Thanks for the input guys.

I've been seeing better experience with maps since the update. I'm on stock rom plus root and few other mods.

Sigh. I still haven't had any luck with it. Tried several different downloads - just in case - and am still with the same issues. I have even gone so far as to wipe after the uninstall and before I update.

Hey everybody,
Just wanted to let you guys know that I was messing around with the GPS setting trying to get my location to be correct on the first try with Google Maps. After tinkering, I found that if I unchecked the Google location Services box in menu>settings>location my location was read almost instantly and accurately! Bidding me farewell to Google Maps saying I was 50 miles away from where I really was.
Hope this helps for everyone, I know it did for some friends.
Let me know if it works, and good luck!
Cool. My Google maps tracked exactly where I was. Even the corner of the intersection(where is my house is located on the street)

I installed the zip file, after it took about a minute to lock on, and after it locks almost instantly. Is this normal to take so long first time locking on?
If you are using a custom ROM then yes it is. I know that from my experience, even after installing the zip I was getting a little lag and even getting the wrong location for about 3 second then it would lock on correctly. Doing what is mentioned in the original post fixed that problem for me entirely. Hope this answers your question!

This is the greatest info I have read regarding the GPS issues with the Thunderbolt! Such a simple fix but one that doesn't make sense at all. Regardless thanks a heap OP! A mod should sticky this information for all to see!
Seems to break location altogether for me when I disable Google location services. Can't get a fix in maps or the sense flip clock weather.

Great bud! Glad I could help!! I would love for a mod to sticky this, it is such an easy (odd but easy, lol) fix yet so many people absolutely hate that the gps won't work right. Hope more will see it and get their GPS working the way it should. Again glad I could help. That's the beauty of a community like this, between all of us, we can make so damn phenomenal phones! lol

Sorry about that, i figured it would be safe to call it that since there is clearly no true fix to this issue anywhere as far as i know at least. Please do correct me if I'm wrong. It worked for quite a few people I know so I thought i would try to help some people out.
Thanks. At least its more accurate now.

I think what we are seeing here is that the gps is not using agps at all. Proper operation would be the agps actually assisting the quicker lock. Instead the agps and gps are working separately and by disabling agps....the locks should still be slow no matter what.
It is for me anyway.
That said, standalone gps will always be more accurate.

Funny thing is, standalone how isn't even working, since when you turn off Google location services it shuts off completely. Also for me it seems to be attached to WiFi so if its off it says I'm within a 2 mile wide area...

No...that's how agps works. It will be within a few miles.
WiFi triangulation will always give quick locks.

I too was having the lag in getting a gps fix. My solution was:
1. Download GPS Status from the market
2. Under menu/tools select Manage A-GPS state
3. Press reset
4. back to menu/tools Manage A-GPS state
5. Press download
I now get instant fix.
Hope it works as well for you.

This just proves ephemeris data is not being downloaded, or used by the GPS automatically. I'm sure HTC will fix it in the future.

Download "GPS Status" app.
Menu, Tools, Manage A-GPS state, Reset, Download.
Try your navigation app then.
I do this whenever the nav apps do strange things.

Have you tried clearing the cache or data in the maps application in settings? Seems like I did one or the other one time to get GPS to start reaquiring when I had that problem a while ago. Also run a scandisk on your memory card. Don't know how many seemingly random problems end up being because of bad data on the card but I bet it is a lot of them since most of us often do battery pulls which can lead to bad data on the card.
I was looking through the Nexus 7 manual in the Play Books app and one of the things it says for gestures is swiping up from the bottom on any screen and saying the word "Google" then your search will search for you. I've swiped up and said it, swiped then paused briefly before saying it but nothing works. Is this something that was taken out with the 4.1.1 update or has it always been missing? Failing that am I doing something wrong?
To clarify things I'm not talking about voice search. I can tap the microphone icon and get search results that way but that isn't what the manual says or what I'm talking about.
Did you elect to turn on Google Now at the first boot? If not, find it in settings and tick the box

I'm guessing you're not based in the US? Google now is pretty crippled when not using the US version. One of the missing features (at least in the UK) is the ability to activate the voice search by saying Google, also the pretty search results with pictures etc are not there too.

This seems to be the problem then. Curses! Thanks for letting me know.
I am US based, and have been unsuccessful with the "say google" voice command as well.
I launch google now.
I say google, and it starts listening for search and I can talk to it.
Works fine for me.

That's a US court case though and only applies to the US. It's similar to how I can buy a Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1 if I want to regardless of what happens in the US. I would hope that Google would leave it in for all non-US countries.
Bielinsk, have you updated? Are you using the stock ROM? If you're using the stock ROM and have updated then something else must be causing it. If you haven't updated then it's clearly been removed.
Swipe from Home button, "Google", "[query]".

Where exactly in the settings menu? Google Now's settings? General settings? I've looked in all of them and unless I'm missing something it should be enabled.

Just a bit of info i have found from research -
If you're in the UK and the pictures aren't displaying, you have to tick - 'search from google.com' in the Google Now settings, and not use google.co.uk.
Same thing stands if you want the cute female voice - You have to change the language to English US
Hope this helps
p.s - the only thing i am stuck with is how to set up 'my locations' - i have enabled this within the Google Now settings but on the Maps app, i cannot add 'my locations', which makes that part of Google Now pretty much useless. I want Google Now to give me prompts to leave, etc etc, its a pretty nifty thing they showed off. Anyone know?
To set your Home and Work locations you have to go to maps.google.com (or .co.uk or wherever you live) on your PC and log into your Google account. You should see the links under the Create Map button on the left.

Here's what I have found
UK nexus 7 on stock 4.1.1
Voice language set to English UK
Search set to Google.co.UK
Offline files for voice recognition for UK English downloaded.
No hot word option in menu. No response to "Google"
Change language to English us at Google now. Change search to Google.com exit from Google now go back in Google hot word works menu option there.
BUT voice recognition way off (was almost perfect before)
Change language back to English UK, exit, back into Google now, no response to "Google" no menu hot word option.
Seems to be the language rather than the search that triggers it.
Guess it will come when they have analysed enough voices to get it right. Although it seems a strange thing to leave out given the rest of the recognition stuff works OK.
I live in Mississauga, Ontario (Canada) and Google Now thinks I live in Hornby, Ontario which is like 45min away from me. Google maps seems to get my exact location (the GPS doesn't lock on it keeps saying "searching for location" or something like that but still shows me exact right location- when I have a SIM the GPS lock works perfectly). Google Now however doesn't fiind my right location with or without a SIM (always connected to internet via wi-fi). When I ask things like "what the weather" or "how's the traffic" it will give me information based on if I was in Hornby which I am not.
This has been going on for a couple of months now and is driving me CRAZY!
Any insight would be helpful - Thanks!
Have u tried putting it in manually?
Go to menu>settings>my stuff>places
Then manually type in your location. I was having the same issue but doing it this way fixed it.

You can tell Google now to give you the temperature for that location for example, "what is the weather like in Buffalo, New York?" Give her a location and she'll reply back.

Your home address is not recognized as a POI(place of interest) by Google thats why you cannot check in there. Create a POI on Google earth/maps, attach a picture and description, wait a while and you should be able to check in to that location from there on. At least that's how I did it a couple of years ago with the home address of a friend of mine. If I am wrong I would gladly accept someone to correct me. The same issue apply to Facebook also.
