[Q] Is a card reader feature available/possible? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings,
I am curious if it is possible to have a memory card reader function available?
I was thinking this would be fun to have when we are out taking pics and we can just immediately preview them on the tab.

It can be done with a usb otg cable and usb card reader.

Fantastic! Thanks all! Is an app or programming needed in order for this to be done?? If so what do you use so I can try it.

Just get an OTG-usb adapter from Amazon (less than $3.) and purchase the Nexus Media Importer app. You can put the mem card in a reader, connect it to the USB-otg and copy or view the pictures using the N7. If rooted, you can use Stickmount (free app) to read/write/stream to and from the mem card.

NO SD CARD? I have a question.

If this phone has no SD card slot, how will I transfer all my stuff from my other phone to the N4?

Transfer to computer, computer transfer to phone via MTP (data transfer protocol that works out of the box on Windows).
deltatux
Google Drive? Thats what i use or airdroid.
Serious question?
Use a computer, bluetooth, cloud service, etc. There are many ways to do this as people have been transferring files since long before SD cards were around.
...a USB cord?
Tapatalk² from my Optimus V
AirDroid (via any browser on mac\linux\windows\other)
via microusb (MTP)
google drive, dropbox, box, skydrive and so on
bluetooth?
Common sense? General understanding of technology?
I wouldn't even buy this phone if I didn't know how to transfer my files onto it..
Airdroid is the easiest option
Part of taking the market share away from Apple, means doing a bit of hand holding along the way. Especially since they aren't used to having options like USB file transfer...or any options in general.
Not referring to OP in particular.
Will I be able to transfer stuff from PC to phone or vise versa without a SD card

YYEEESSSSS!!! An sd card is not required. If you are using android now. take your SD card from your phone you are using right now. Put it in your computer (sd card slot or use usb sd adapter). Plug your N4 into the computer with the charging cable. Drag and drop everything you want to transfer to the N4. or just install airdroid on both phones. It is real easy

[Q] Setting up OTG

Hello there, I'm currently looking for a usb OTG cable, will get to test one later this evening.
I have a question: What do i need to do to set up the storage on the tablet side? Do i need to get an app that configures the new storage or is it just plug & play. I'm asking because I will try to test the cable to see if it works. Can I just use Solid Explorer to access the external storage after i plug in the usb cable with the attatched card reader and 16gb microsd hc class 6 card?
My nexus7 3g is rooted, currently on Jr4 Rom.
Oh and another thing.. is the nexus7 limited in terms of microsd size and speed class ?
Thx allot.

Get StickMount from the market - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&feature=search_result
Plug and Play
Use a file manager to find it
Stickmount is the way to go, but you must be rooted. The Nexus Media Importer app lets you access external storage as read-only. You have to pay, but don't need to be rooted. I'm using a 32Gb microsd class 10 and it works great as read/write and streaming with Stickmount.
64GB Sandisk microsdxc the N7 will read if microsd card formatted in NTFS using stickmount. Mine works fine.

I have it too. I want to use huawei internet stick on but any program don`t recognise that device. I even bought stickmount pro and still nothing.

I think I will manage to use it without stickmount.
I'm running a kernel that sais it will automount hotplug usb support. Does this mean that it will automount it just like stickmount pro does?
didn't actually get to test that OTG cable yet, maybe tonight.
Also, what do you think of the Rescan Media app? it's supposed to start the Media Scanner service on android and inform mx player and winamp about the .avi and .mp3 files on your sdcard or flashdrive.

I tryed and still can't get it to work?
I guess I have to change ROM to get it... Do you now is it possible on CM10?
Yeah stickmount pro is the way to go, my 500GB portable Samsung HDD works fine but wouldn't on my Galaxy S3 until I flash Siyah kernel again, I use Trinity kernel on my Nexus 7 and no problems
OTG cable - External HDD or whatever you use - stickmount pro and away you go.

I'm using "nexus media importer" on my unrooted device. It isn't a free app but if you just want to try it before buying, you can try the dev's free app "gallery connect preview". Make sure your usb memory stick has pictures on it . Open the app before connecting the usb stick. I had to try a few times till the app recognized my cardreader and sd cards. Without root i can't change files on the external memory, but at least i can watch movies and open files from it.
I don't know if the sd cards are in FAT or NFTS. I just take it out of my dslr camera and plug it in the cardreader connected to my OTG cable.

Rooted N7 mounting hard disk drive?

Hi everyone. I am very new to Android and this forum as well.
Just a week ago I got my Nexus 7 - my first android device! <3
I read online that I can root my device and install stickmount to get USB OTG support
I have done that successfully
I am able to use the SanDisk 4GB USB now - great
So I tried to mount a hard drive......but failed
I guess my Nexus has not enough power to use the hard drive.
But the thing is that my drive actually did power on (although with a strange sound continued in background)
Still stickmount failed to mount/detect the drive
The hard drive I used is not a popular one - is manufactured by a company named EIGHT
The model no is UH320
The drive is 320GB
As I read more information, I know that self-powered hard drive should work flawlessly.
I want to ask what is the problem? Any suggestions to get it work?
Or any hard drive that is tested and work with the Nexus 7?
Thanks a lot. Any help or advice would be appreciated
You can try a shorter cable. I have a drive that works on a 2 foot cable but only makes a clicking sound and never reads the drive on a 4 foot cable. External powered drives work OK.

Thanks for your advice. I wish to know if you can show a pic of the workable cable?
for mine, it is the "SANOXY Micro USB Host Mode OTG Cable Flash Drive SD T-Flash Card Adapter"
do you know what filesystem your external drive is formatted in? FAT32? NTFS? HFS+? something else? it might not be showing up because you don't have support for the filesystem the drive is in. small flash drives are usually formatted in FAT16 or FAT32, which is natively supported in android, so those will typically work. larger hard drives may not, since they might be NTFS or some other filesystem that isn't natively supported.
I have checked that my hdd is formatted in NTFS. It is 320gb.

It's also very possible that you have a bad cable. You may want to get your hands on another one to verify.
I have tried to use the same cable connecting to the laptop and it works fine. Anyway, I am going to buy another HDD and see if the problem can be solved. Any suggestion which HDD to buy?
I am looking for a 320gb or a 500gb HDD. Thanks!

Curious about the first sentence... you don't mean that you used the cable to connect the laptop to the hdd, do you? If so, that does not verify that you have a good otg cable.

oh well,i can always take it back off her if there is a fix lol
What 16GB mico sd card? The only solutions I have found for transfering files is via WiFi with an app. Or using a Wi-Drive via WiFi and both accessing the files on the drive.

[Q] usb pen

I bought a usb pen and it connects and can see how much memory on it via my files but it won't store stuff it shows the stored amount but nothing there....is there a way to format it to fat32 via the phone?
Settings / Storage / Format USB OTG Storage
