Device iddle - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does somebody know why my device iddle is hogging my battery?
Installed wake lock detector app, and everything seems fine. Only syncing whatsapp, Facebook, email, Google. But disabled almost every push notifications, even on Facebook....
Using wanam 1.4, latest Adam kernel...
Help
Thanks

Google apps syncing are battery hoggs, especialy Chrome bro. Also Loaction service uses lot of power. I always have gps turned off unless i need it.

Well, I always have my gps off... I sync fewest things as possible, just the basic stuff...
Same settings as my old S3, but the S3 had a much better battery life.
Still trying to figure out why device idle is hogging my battery.

"com.motorola.providers.contacts" eating away battery.

My "com.motorola.providers.contacts" usage is always pretty damn high, with 15-20+ minutes of CPU time.
It always shows up high on the battery usage list.
A thread in the Motorola support forums for the Droid X states that "BlurPhotoDownloadService" eats away at battery life as well. I couldn't seem to find this process on the Atrix, so I'm assuming it's packaged into "com.motorola.providers.contacts".
Anyway, what does this process do?
Furthermore, how can I slow/stop it safely to save my precious battery?
Thanks!
Nobody else having this issue?
i think that process syncs your contacts from gmail or hotmail. you can disable it with titanium backup if you are rooted
Is it safe to freeze this process?
there are three our four apps associated with your phones contacts I think you can freeze 2 of them without losing your contacts. check the thread on what you can freeze or you can try it yourself. freezing these apps won't bricked your phone.

Yup I figured that part out.
I checked the thread but couldn't find anything about com.motorola.providers.contacts. I'm not sure what to freeze to disable syncing.
Today, my phone died 30% in an hour because apparently Twitter had been syncing/using CPU time for 1.5hrs. I havn't opened the app in days either :/
there are other apps that sync and use up your battery. i disabled all email and social media sync and a few others.

Try Badass Battery Monitor
Look for Samsung Push Service in your apps list and un-install it!
If you use Samsung Apps, this program is automatically installed and stays active, won't let your phone go to sleep!

Instead of trying to uninstall apps, installing Magic Locker allows you to set power saving and this could be very helpful. In my case it doubled the battery life and I now have around 60% left in the evening.
Hope this helps.

There are a number of Apps you can install that will show running applications ~ SystemPanel is one such app.
It comes in two variant ~ Paid & Free.
The free version is okay for looking at what your apps are doing but it does not offer the same level of service that the paid version gives and in this case you do need the paid version.
Full version ($2.99) adds app manager (installer/uninstaller with multi-version APK archival), and long-term application resource monitor to solve app-related battery life problems.
However, for finding out what apps are using your battery you can do this with your phone's built-in settings.
Just navigate to Settings/Applications/Running Services and look at what apps are currently running.
If you don't need a particular app running simply tap on it and select 'Stop'.
Job done that is one app no longer running in the background.
Another option is to again go to Settings/Applications/Battery Usage.
Here you not only see the graph at the top but also a list of main running apps (note not all are shown).
Tap the graph at the top and it shows you various parameters i.e. when the screen was on and when the device was awake. Basically you need both to be the same. If the phone's screen was off but it remained awake you then have an app running constantly in the background.
So, press the back button and look at the list of apps showing. To terminate an app simply tap on it and this time select 'Force Close'.
Spend a little time now and again popping over to these two places (Running Services & Battery Usage) and you should be able to identify what app or apps are eating your battery.

In my case I chose MIUI but I think any theme should work as well. After installation it asked if I wanted to activate the battery saving mode which I accepted to check its performance as I was having battery drain as well and needed a solution.
I was happily surprised the next day. I hope all these issues are fixed by Samsung in ICS.
Best Battery Status with Chracks Rom.

Go to settings, scroll down to accounts, tap on whatsapp. There you can turn off contacts synchronization, which is causing the wakelocks.
It will not interfere with your messages as this only sycs your contacts.
Do check once in a while if it stays of as with me it sometimes turns on automatically
Thanks for your help. I will try it

I'll give this a shot. I was shocked to see that Whatsapp was keeping my phone awake for more than 7 hours over the course of a day. Thanks.
I AM having this problem too. My auto sync is already offline and I still get a huge amount of wakelocks.
What else can I do?
after opening whatsapp..just go to settings->apps-> whtsapp.. and click force close.. u wil have no wakelocks
Try and find the previous apk.

Greenify will probably "kill" message notifications?
My problem went away after I installed the newest version off their website.
@clankfu,
Thanks, will try it. Seems that Play has 2.10.*** and the latest on their website is 2.11.***
Had this issue with website versions weeks and months ago. Might be that the bug came into the playstore version (although I don't have any issues right now)

It will take it to sleep mode.
I see this once in a while and it'd be good to understand WTF is going on. Why does it take a full 5 minute wakelock?
I'm not even sure if its the contacts sync because I clicked on Whatsapp in the Android Settings menu and it showed that the last sync was at 7pm last night. Yet this morning I had a 5-6 minute wakelock. I unchecked and rechecked and it completed the sync in a second or two.
download LLama or Tasker and you can create a task so that when you are backing out of whats app it will FC it for you. I do this with some system apps that stay open longer than I would like. Although its not the way Android may want it its what I do
specify the tasker profile

Calendar Storage causing keeping phone awake!

So I'm totally in love with my Samsung galaxy note 3. I'm just not satisfied with my battery life. I find that it's really inconsistent. Sometimes the battery life is good, other times not so much. My phone can be charged to 100% and then within 2 minutes of use its down to 99. Also, for example, last night I went to bed at 3am and woke up at 11am (8hrs) and my battery had gone down from 40% to 22% :s. I downloaded wake lock detector and found that "calendar storage" was constantly waking my phone up. I've searched everywhere for solutions and haven't found something concrete. Can anyone help me out please?!

I tried that. Still doesn't work. This is unbelievably frustrating. It's absolutely killing my battery life man
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using xda app-developers app
Cant help but found your problem while searching for an answer to my own. Same here, but on a Moto X so it's not necessarily Samsung related. Calendar storage has a whopping 1,013 wake locks in 10 hours. The next closest is incomparable with Google Search /109, then Tasker / 64, everything else is negligible.
Going all Chuck Norris and disabling a bunch of things may work, but I hate that method as it ruins the point of a "smart phone". There has to be some better explanation out there, but many threads are years old for the same "calendar storage" problem and usually device-specific solutions.
edit: make that 1,023 just since writing this post! crazy
Force-stop it. It's probably stuck. (settings --> general --> applications --> all --> Calendar storage --> Clear cache & Force Stop).
Also, turn off all Syncs (including Google and Exhange) and Backup for the calendar.
If I force close calendar storage, the calendar app doesn't work . It opens, but all the information in my calendar doesnt show. I've even tried other third party calendar apps.
Sent from my SM-N900W8 using xda app-developers app
anyone found a solution yet? Previously on my s4 it would wake like 150 times a day, which isn't to bad, but I just got a OnePlus One and this is constantly waking my phone! It had like 800 wakes in 4 hours!

Thanks Christ for create this thread as I am about to post the same question.
It has happened in the last couple days. I wouldn't say 100% but surely 98% every time I turn the screen on, there is "searching for GPS" pops up.
It keeps running for from a few seconds to minute then turns back off.
Yes, I DID set to disable GPS.
Does anyway we can figure out which app is actually searching for GPS, gurus?

How do you know it's the FB?
It used to search for gps whenever I received a Facebook notification. It might not be the same issues for you. What about the weather widget?

I don't set any notification ON and FB isn't running at all.
I suspect the G+ but don't know for sure.
Weather widget is not a culprit.
For me, it was Carrier IQ. Once I disabled that, my random GPS wakes stopped.

Sounds reasonable but I do have CIQ enable from day one w/o any issue.
It just happens in the last couple of days. Maybe 2014 isn't the year for me?
Maybe GSam Battery Monitor can help pinpoint which app is causing the GPS wakes. Or Wakelock Detector.
I also have been noticing the location icon popping up on my status bar every now and then. I cant find what app is triggering it. I dont see cIQ in my application manager to disable it...
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk
Running Applications > Android System > IQ Agent Service. Hit stop there and then hit stop for Android System. You'll have to do that at each boot unless you're rooted. If you're rooted, you can use System Tuner.
Here's my shots.
This is probably directly related to the issue or NOT.
Clearly, Location Manager Service goes crazy.
What it is is yet to figure out.
At one point, I saw Google Messaging Service kicked on so I turned off Hangouts SMS feature and along with a reboot, my battery is now better but the "searching for GPS " still pops up.
Is location services turned off also in Google Settings and Maps?

Those photos... completely baffling. Wow. My guess would be all the recommendations above and going through all apps requiring location and disabling it.
Could try Greenify. I use it. It hibernates apps so they won't run until you tell them to
