I wanted to know that is the data of 4.2 keyboard is stored on Google account or on device? And also Google now data too.
This question rooted from me wondering whether the "learning" Google now has done of me on my note 2 will be carried over to N4 through my Google account or i wil have to start over?
Your best bet would be to do an adb backup of the keyboard apk and its data if you're worried about data loss and not rooted. If you're rooted, use Titanium Backup to back up your keyboard. I'm not sure if that data is in cloud, so you're safer keeping a local backup with the above ideas. I use SwiftKey and haven't lost data yet, using these methods.

I got my Nexus 4 replaced due to hardware problems.
Now I'm not sure how to migrate my data from my current N4 to the new one. Should I just insert my SIM card into the new phone and log in using my Google Account and then all my data will be pulled from the cloud? Or do I need to backup all my data using a app like Carbon/Helium and restore it on my new N4?

It depends what data you are trying to transfer over. If it's apps then I'm pretty sure Google Play would restore those for you automatically, but if it's pictures or personal files then you might have to do those manually.

You need to transfer all data from your sdcard manually. App data won't be restored automatically, so you have to use carbon backup to backup the data of your apps

Helium still the best way when considering my Note 4 is locked?
it did not work perfectly when I move from my Samsung s3 to the note but not sure if Helium is really my only option

SMS's are synced to google I believe if you are using hangout.
For my backup restores I use Titanium backup, but remember that it'll only backup/restore system and apps settings and data and no personal data like images, sms, contacts etc. But if you have google backup setup transfer should be smooth for photos, sms, contacts etc.

I think hangout syncs all your messages automatically to the cloud. I can say this as per my experience of before and after rooting my nexus 5 on android 6.0. For root I had to wipe clean my phone and after root, hangout automatically synced all old SMSs back to my nexus 5. So I think before wiping out you can try to install hangouts on some other device and sign in with same ID that you have on Note 4 and see if your messages appear on new device. I think that would be the best way to check.

And by google backup I meant google account's sync service. If you use google photos, use backup option to move all photos to google and it'll be available on new device when you sign in with same account on new device using google photos. And all your contacts and other preferences are saved by google account so its matter of logging into the new device with same google account and checking how many things you were able to restore. For remaining like music and videos move them manually.
There is no easy way of moving everything to new android device in Android ecosystem unlike iOS where iTunes does everything for you (but again if you are jailbroken, even iTunes cannot sync everything).
I cant help with SMS/MMS, thats why Hangouts is great. BUT, I can help with the application data. I just pushed out a new version of my script, which, among other things, adds support for backup and restore of app data. Might help you out here.

Titanium Backup is only way to transfer SMS without using Hangouts.
Will work between any Android versions and types as long as you use the XML SMS backup option.

I thought helium transferred sms, just not mms?
OK guys. I'll try to see what happens when I load hangouts. I didn't realize it was backing up sms. I did use titanium back when I had my S3 rooted. That worked perfectly. Helium - yeah I lost mms
Chevycam - so it's just a tool that does adb backup? Works on any phone regardless of root status?

How well did it work? Did you copy everything?
Backed up everything from my prior phone via Titanium Backup
Save to computer
Cut and paste onto the 6P
Restore.. although this time around, I restored only the apps and not the app data so I can start clean.

Worked well.. Once I logged into the 6P, I let Google download all my apps. I then restored the backup, which restored most of my data. It did not seem to copy my Nova Launcher settings, so I had to copy that manually. It also does not copy Bluetooth connections, so you will have to set those up again. Overall, I was pretty happy with it. I didn't want to root the phone, so I didn't do a titanium backup.

Ouch. Certainly better than nothing but my Nova is huge with all my apps. I guess knowing this you can export/import the nova settings

Yes, it's independent of the device connected. Root doesn't matter. But be aware, in order to back up APPS, you need root. Backing up the App DATA does NOT require root. Apps won't back up, even with Titanium Backup, without root.
So my experience...
1) Hangouts doesn't backup sms or at least it doesn't seem that it does. Used SMS Backup and Restore and that seems to have done the trick
2) I tried using Helium but I'm not sure what drivers to use so gave up on that
3) If Google is backing up app data in Lollipop, it has to be bare minimum. Honestly, I'm not sure what it actually did backup
4) I realized that I really don't need the backup besides SMS. It would have been easier to handle transferring stuff sure but there are only a handful of apps that I wanted to transfer settings over and they all had options to Export settings.
Oh well. Hopefully the new backup on Marshmallow will hopefully provide a better experience. It did ask while setting up the phone whether I want to do a restore through NFC from another phone - it just neglected to mention that it's not a Lollipop option

Almost no apps use API 23 which is required for the new Google backup. Only choices are helium or adb backup
What transfers when you use nfc to restore apps from n5 to n6p? All apps with data? I have titanium bu, but may not want to root the 6p, so it that useless? I have internal memory backed up to PC, so not concerned about media. Just wondering if I need anything else if I use the nfc option in set up.
I did an ADB backup of my nexus 6, then restored it to my 6P. It seemed to save most of my data. I believe the tap and go option only copies your account data.

it only restores your account information and your screen layouts and such. the apps all have to re-download from the play store.
Question,
I changed phones and smart switch from my old note 4 to this new one did not transfer my settings for a few apps (Philips Hue lampshade, etc).
Is there a way I can back these up or transfer them on my non rooted note 4 to this one?
