Nook HD/HD+ General Gaming Thread - Nook HD, HD+ General

I thought we should have a general gaming thread for our nook hd's and HD+'s. I use mine for gaming a lot of the time so I figured that other people probably do also. You can post anything related to gaming on the nooks here such as games that run great on the tablets, games that aren't supported, asking question pertaining to how games work on the tablets etc. So, does anybody know any really great games or have any questions about games on the nook? If so, fire away!

Games on nook HD+
I'm currently running stock, unrooted 2.1.1 with nova launcher and sideloaded g-apps on a Nook HD+.
I've only put a few games on it so far. Iron Man 3 and Epic Citadel both run very well, which was a pleasant surprise.
Epic Citadel also has some benchmarking features which report decent scores for the Nook HD+.
I also installed Google Ingress, but it just crashes after launch. The crash occurs just after the opening graphic with the globe. This happens under 2.1.0 and 2.1.1.
Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot the Ingress issue beyond the basics (clear cache, reinstall) ?

On medium settings it runs pretty nice, but asphalt itself is pretty bad.
On the other hand EA Real Racing is much better game, but it runs not so smooth.

I am running CM11 on my two Nook HD+ (latest Feb-26th nightly, I just updated both tablets)
I have a strange WIFI related issue with Minecraft PE. Minecraft PE allows you to share your game (your world) with any other device running Minecraft PE on the same LAN. When I open a world with any other device (HP Touchpad, phone), all other devices in the LAN can see the game, even the two Nook HD+. However, when I start a world with a Nook HD+, no other device (the HP Touchpad, the phone, not even the other Nook HD+) can see it.
I wonder if anyone else has found this problem ..

Games Not Working - the haunt (1&2)
the Haunt and the Haunt 2 (and, I assume, all their other games) will not run on my Nook HD+ running CM11 (latest nightly) with PAs 0-Day gapps. In fact, these games stopped working on my Nook Tablet (16gb) after I upgraded it from CM7 to CM9. I contacted the developer (Synthesis Design Solutions), letting them know I was trying to play their games on a rooted Nook HD+ running CM11 (etc.) and they told me to try and download the games from the Nook Store again. Huh?
Well, I didn't download them from the Nook Store to begin with - I no longer have access to the Nook Store after rooting/modding - and the games WORKED on my Nook Tablet running CM7 until I upgraded it (as I said), so now what? Why did they stop working? What was different between CM7 and CM9 on one device and having CM11 on another? If those games ran once, they should always run, unless there was some change in android... And why can I download from the Google Play store, install them, and then they don't run? Really?!
I've tried just about everything to get these games working, except modifying the build.prop, just so I can play the darn things! I tried a couple of Xposed modules (RootCloak and App Settings), and they were no help. So I am left with this: a black screen with a little message saying "Warning This device is not supported."
So, anybody have some idea of how to make this work, short of modifying the build.prop?
Also, I won't purchase any more games from this developer in fear of them not working as well.
Thanks!

I installed n64 emulator and am playing army men 2. Running cm11 with bluetooth keyboard for control. Works great!

Well my best guess is they check for screen dpi and error out, change the build prop settings and see if they run? Best guess I have for that error, I had the same on some games from a old phone that I had to change build prop to 120 and reboot to play them.
From the Ether of Time

Has anyone tried CM 1.2 final stable release with the Wii remotes? I cannot get the HD+ to detect the WiiMotes at all.

I have also tried using WiiMotes, and it will not work on android builds that are 4.2 or newer. I made a CM10.0 SD-card build, and WiiMotes work on it, but the HDMI out to TV causes the HD+ to reboot.
There's an explanation within one of the development threads as to why the WiiMotes are not working w/ Android 4.2+. Something about how the Bluetooth stack doesn't contain some legacy code that the WiiMotes used to communicate. PLEASE do not quote me on this, as I am writing this in a hurry. Search the forums here for the proper explanation.

[Q] Playstation emulator feasible?

Hi all,
I was thinking about purchasing a nook color and having fun with roms and themes. I'm wondering though if anyone has tried a playstation emulator on one of these? Looks like this has the same specs as the Droid 2 and X so it seems possible. Could maybe use a controller over Bluetooth?
I'm also wondering what the "stock" market place is like. Is it possible to access the full market once your rooted?
Thanks in advance.
After overclocking to 1.1ghz running cyanogenmod 7, the playstation emulator works very smooth for me, and I use a wii classic controller over bluetooth. Not all games will run though.
On the stock rom you cant really do much, but once you're running a custom rom you can do pretty much anything.
this sounds pretty awsome

actually, i'm running stock rooted and psx4droid runs fine for me... playing super puzzle fighter and FFVII so far. just using the on-screen keys.
I'm running CM7 off of SD card OC'd to 1.1ghz with psx4droid app . Knockout Kings runs, but pretty choppy. Blood Omen Legacy of Kain runs perfect (weird choice I know but nostalgic for me).
Also running N64oid but for N64 games, at least for me, they don't run smooth enough to really play. Almost but not quite.
I'm not aware of having problems accessing the market place. Both Android and Amazon seem to work great for me.

[Q] Stock or CM for gaming?

I've a rooted KF with CM7 barebones and I've bought this device primarily for gaming, so I'm loving this ROM.
However, I do want to use other apps such as XDA forum app and browsing/reading apps. But some of these apps don't seem to be stable on CM. The irony especially is that the XDA app keeps crashing whenever I log in. So I can only browse the forum as a guest from my KF.
Now are there any gamers out there who are able to play games smoothly on a stock or stock rooted KF? I think especially games like Frontline Commando or Modern Combat 3 are heavy on the resources and if they play well on the Stock KF, then I should be happy with it.
Any inputs? Are there ones that really prefer the Stock ROM over CM7 for reasons other than stability - for reasons such as performance for instance?
Also, if I have a rooted stock KF and the anroid market, then are all the apps/games on the Market visible and installable? I am asking this since the CM7 spoofs Galaxy Tab to ensure compatibility.
I use MIUI 2.1.20 to play NOVA, Modern Combat, Shadow Gun, etc... I haven't found a single app that doesn't work (I've been using it for 6 days). Hope that helped! Feel free to send me a message if you wanna know more.

Have you tried GTA3 and Sonic CD?
well... xda isnt stable on stock either. on rooted, without modifying build.prop, it wont show 75% of the games you mentioned. cm7 is definetly a better option.

Just to throw in my two cents... while I do like the customizations that are possible with CM7 and ICS I find that modified stock is more stable and, for my usage, better battery life.

Because the PS3 and Xbox fit great in your coat pocket for on-the-go.... (rolls eyes).
I've had pretty good luck with the MoDaCo rom. You get the advantages/stability of stock with everything under the hood modded, including the build.prop, market access, etc. It's ran everything I've thrown at it so far.
Thanks all for your inputs. I went to MoDaCo from CM7-Barebones as I wanted to try the stock feel. The stock Kindle is way way better for reading thanks to the various font size and typography features.
Even the games ran quite well on the MoDaCo and I was quite happy all these days as everything was working without a glitch.
However, when I wanted to play some gameloft games - I have purchased Modern Combat and Nova series, then poof... they don't appear on the market. I even changed the build.prop but no go. MoDaCo says they have the tweak that will show the Fire as Galaxy Tab on the market for more compatibility but even that didn't work.
So today I am back to CM7 and glad to see that the apps I want show up on market. Need to play around and see how this goes. Sad that I will be missing out on the reader experience though.
I am running CM7 with ravens kernel and play many of the same games you mentioned without issue. I had to download the modified build.prop but have not had any issues. Battery life is excellent and since ravens kernel overclocks performance is good.
try modaco custom rom with ravens kernel. It handled all the games I've thrown at it. I get like 2400-2500 quadrant scores from ravens kernel compared to 2000 stock kernel. So if you want the fastest stock experience I say go for that.

Also, what launcher do you use with MoDaCo ROM as I can't get ADW to run (immediately FCs).

With Cyanogen, how is the performance compared to the Nook Color OC'ed?

Well, I've had tons of fun learning about roots and rom mods and all this fun stuff. I got a nook color from work for a decent price a while back just to root and play with. Now I'm thinking of getting a Kindle fire, to add to my collection of rootable things to fiddle with. Kind of a hobby. Since the nook tablet has a locked boot loader... Ugh.
Now... For questions :3
1.) My nook color at 1.2 ghz, and with the V6 supercharger script, lags like a...you know what, when I open the app drawer and scroll. It's terrible. Everything else is ok, slight lag here and there. Is the kindle fire truly faster?
2.) Is it overclock-able? And if so, does this give it any performance gain?
3.) How is the screen, and speakers compared to the Nook Color?
4.) Bluetooth...?
5.) I've heard the kindle fire's boot loader is not locked, is this true?
6.) I've heard the screen has touch issues...is this true? If so, does Cm7/9 resolve such issues or is it a physical defect?
I'm sure alot of you guys have one. How do you like it? How do you feel it performs compared to a Galaxy s2. (That's what I have, and it's fast a heck lol)
Thanks guys
1) The KF stock ROMs are very smooth. CM7 has minimal lag and I have yet to try CM9 on my KF.
2) Yes, intersectRaven's Kernal is OC'd and performs well
3) The screen looks sharper on the KF and I'm not positive if the Nook Tab has a gorilla glass screen. My friend who owns a Nook Tablet wants a KF after playing around with mine.
4) No Bluetooth
5) True, the bootloader isn't locked. Using KindleFireUtility you can root via jcase's burritoroot, load the FireFireFire bootloader, and install the latest TWRP touch-based recovery among other things.
6) I haven't had any touch issues other than the extreme corners of the screen. Hopefully with work happening on a new 3.0.x kernal for ICS that might improve responsiveness a bit.
I love my KF and it's very easy to root and customize to your taste. I think the 7" size is the sweet spot for what I need in a tablet. CM7 is stable and can be easily tweaked to feel more like a tablet and not an oversized phone.
Thanks mate! That pretty much told me all I need to know.
I guess the touch screen issues are software then? That's good ^-^
Is there any possibility of Bluetooth in the future you think?
I bought a KF just because I wanted an Android tablet. It was easy to root and flash with KF Utility and TWRP.
To be honest, I have yet to try CM7 on it, I went straight to CM9. It has it's few bugs and of course no video yet. But, it runs smooth and runs everything I have. I am very impressed by it and it's a hell of a good tablet.
I mainly got for it internet and games, no video for now is fine by me.
i had a nook color before i had my kindle fire, i love my kf way more, it runs so much smoother than the color, i sold my color to my sister because she doesnt need 2 cores, and it does everything she wants it to do with no complaints. she has cm7 on it over clocked super charged and it works fine. but it is no comparison to the kf cm7 or even the buggish cm9 alpha. i thought at first i was going to hate not having volume buttons but, now. im love it.

No video? Does the screen not work? Or do you mean youtube? I mainly want cm7 because I like the look and feel better than ICS, plus I do not want to give up my menu button
stock roms are really smooth and fast but cm9 looks the best. Compared to the nook I wouldn't know I don't have one.

He's referring to CM9 builds having lack of Hardware Acceleration at this point. CM7 builds play videos just fine
CM9 has video working okay. No HD, and it's a bit choppy, but it works. I personally love it, looks a lot better than the stock ROM. You can OC the KF too, I've got mine at 1.2 GHz.

[Q] What are some of the known issued with CM9 on Nook color?

Just installed on the dual boot CM7/CM9 on SD card and have started playing with CM9.
It works pretty well but I can't get some things to work and I'm just wondering if the things I'm running across are known issues or not.
For instance...I can't get a movie to play with the Netflix app.
volume is low when playing movies using Moboplayer (like it was on CM7) but can't seem to get the nook tweaks to work in order to fix it.
are these known issues?
looks like they are known issues
I should have searched the forums more
hopefully they are fixable because I do like it

You must have an older nightly on CM9. Fattire fixed the nook tweaks with a kernel tweak a few days ago. It now can adjust the gain like you could on CM7.

Its actually got to be a pretty old nightly not to have this in. chertykov first suggested the code to fix this on 23rd Feb and fattire then put it in almost straight away. So nightlies for the over a month have worked fine with Nook tweaks.

Kindle "Tate" & OFFICIAL CyanogenMod 11.0 for the Kindle Fire HD 7"

Kindle "Tate" & OFFICIAL CyanogenMod 11.0 for the Kindle Fire HD 7"
Just wanted to post this for anyone looking to do this. I have the Tate Kindle Fire HD and as we all know there have been no updates to the OS and there probably will not be any. Most of the people here like to play with things to see how they work and see what they get away with. I'm no different.
Not being able to use all of the Android apps can be frustrating especially when there is an app that can play on your device but it's not on the Amazon app store yet. Every Kindle owner secretly dreams of being able to use the Google Play Store.
So I did what a lot of us have done and I rooted my Kindle Tate and installed the Google Play Store. I was checking out some apps and then I went to purchase Grand Theft Auto and I got a this version is not supported on your device warning. It would not let me purchase this app while rooted with the Google Play Store. Apparently the services that it checks for are not available on a rooted tablet. Plenty of other apps let me install them but I realized that the good apps all had hardware requirements.
After this happened I was thinking that rooting your Kindle Fire HD is just a waste of time if I'm limited to only the generic apps. Grand Theft Auto runs on my Kindle Fire HD from the Amazon app store just fine in case anyone is wondering.
So after seeing that rooting your Kindle Fire HD is really a waste of time if you're just going to put the Google Play Store on it. Especially for people that want everything. If you only want generic apps then you might as well just stay with Amazon. So that's what I was thinking. Then I said well maybe I can just install Android 4.4 with theCyanogenMod
So I got everything I needed and proceeded to put CyanogenMod 11.0 on my Kindle Fire Tate. First impressions I was like YEAH, this is hot. You could configure it and change the wallpaper and it just looked great. I was thinking that I definitely made a good decision and that I would be able to enjoy my Kindle Fire HD more.
Then after playing around with it for a while and trying lots of apps for it I started to realize that yeah it looks good but compared to the Generic Amazon OS it ran like crap. I could install Grand Theft Auto on my device once I put the CyanogenMod on my device but it ran like crap so I installed Magic 2014 on it, a game that I had played on this Kindle for many hours. It was choppy and laggy. You would press the screen and nothing would happen. It was playable but it was bad compared to playing on the Amazon OS. I tried to optimize it and spent at least 3 hours trying to get it to play games smoothly but it just wouldn't. I'm older also and you will notice right away that apps text size is smaller. You can increase the text size for the device in settings but it has no effect on the apps that you run. Text from apps I played on the Amazon OS was very small on Android 4.4. This may not be a big deal to younger people but to me it was noticeable. It was like the text for a phone instead of a tablet.
So then I restored my Kindle Fire HD and then wiped it to factory settings and re installed everything that I was using on the Android 4.4 and wow was it so much better. The Amazon OS while not pretty is fast and responsive compared to this. It felt like a nice tablet again.
I'm just writing this for the average joe. Don't waste your time with your Kindle Fire HD Tate by trying to make it better. Nothing you can do is going to get it how you want it. Just enjoy it for what it is. If you want to have a nice Android device running the latest software then just buy an Android Device that's running he latest software. If you buy a Kindle they you are just locked into what you spent.
My next tablet will be a device that just runs on Android.
hi
what build of cm11 did you use?
Im curious I have just installed snapshot m6 on my kindle but I haven't tested any games or apps at all.
I'm curious how you tried to adjust text size, I just would have tried tweaking the DPI (think it's labeled something like screen density in the build.prop) I believe you could boost your performance more with maromis kernel by setting the clock as high as it can go (not every device can handle the highest setting without locking up) and putting it in performance mode. Remember hashcode is still working on this ROM and has been for a while. Personally my kindle runs much faster on cm 11 than it did on stock, but I dont use it for gaming, I find most android games annoying once they bring in 3d games that look like ps1 era graphics. I prefer 2d games on android like beat hazard or angry birds.

I tried the build from the 29th and the 30th and it was the same with both builds. I also read through the development thread and I noticed that playing games was an issue.
If you're not playing games then it would probably be fine. All the normal apps ran good enough that I could live with the performance but I want my device to be able to do everything.

Yeah I think the issue is gaming. It ran fine while doing normal things. It was just when I put games on it that it had major problems. I know everyone doesn't play games but a lot of us do. It's a deal breaker for me. I just went into settings and made the text size large which was fine but in apps I noticed that the text was small. I mainly noticed this in Magic 2014. The text is already small in this game but running the Cyan-Mod it was unbearably small for me. Some people would probably be ok with it. I'm 48 and my eyes are not as good as they used to be.
This tablet only has a dual core processor, it would run games a lot faster with a quad core processor.

I have a KFHD7 and a Nexus 7 and the both game fine. My Kindle is the tablet I have set up for gaming using the HDMI cord and my six axis app because the Kindle natively maintains a charge while using HDMI. That means I game all day if I want. I play emulators, GTA, Modern Combat, Max Payne and a slew of other games. The Kindle games great and the majority of my games are from the Play Store. Sorry your luck is not so good with the Kindle. It's not as snappy as my Nexus 7 Flo but it's much faster with CM on it. My opinion.
Edit: About GTA from Amazon App Store - Some apps sold there are Kindle editions and are not completely compatible for other tablets. GTA from the Play Store works on my Kindle with CM on it while the one I bought from Amazon is not compatible with either my Nexus or Kindle because it's a Kindle app. When you put CM on your Kindle, your tablet is no longer recognized as a Kindle. I bought it because I got half coins back plus $20 buck worth of coins free.

After reading your post I felt compelled to reply, as my own experiences installing and using CM11 on the KFHD "Tate" have been nothing like what you have described. It is unfortunate that you were not able to get things working the way you wanted them to...that being said, the decision to switch from the stock Amazon ROM to CM11 has transformed my Kindle from a glorified e-reader/24 hour Amazon advertisement to a fast and reliable full-function Android tablet. I can say this without reservation. There is nothing that a Nexus 7 or other comparable tablet can do that I can't do just as well on my KFHD. 100% of the credit for that goes to CyanogenMod. Thanks to CM11, my KFHD is currently overclocked to 1728.0MHz max frequency, which is a 42% increase in clock speed over Amazon's kernel. The GPU is similarly overclocked. This has come, at least in my case, at no cost to stability. Prior to switching from the stock Amazon ROM I sideloaded Antutu benchmark. With the stock ROM installed the highest score I ever saw was around 9500. After switching to CM11, the same exact device managed a score of 15485. There is simply no comparison. CM11 > Amazon ROM. Any day of the week.

What tool or kernel are you using for overclocking? I'm running CM11 M8 on my Tate, and the built-in performance settings only let me go to 1500MHz for the CPU and I don't see any GPU overclocking options.
Although I will say that even just running CM11 at 1500MHz seems substantially faster than running Amazon's stock at 1200MHz, including for games, so I don't know what OP is talking about. Granted, he was running a nightly from several weeks before the M8 snapshot, so he could have just been running into some bugs.
