Can't Preview in Gmail

FIXED!!! SEE END OF POST.
Using the latest RC30 mod from JesusFreke, everything works swell (cache to sd card, autorotate, multitouch, etc).
However I can't preview anything but .txt files in gmail! If I try to preview a .doc or .pdf file it crashes (Gmail has stopped unexpectedly) every time.
Not sure what is causing it, I believe it should be calling HTML Viewer and then maybe doesn't find it? I can view things with HTML Viewer though (txt files through ASTRO, etc).
I recently installed Linda File Manager as it adds a plugin to the Browser that enables the downloading of any content, however I've removed this app (and ASTRO) but haven't seen any results. I also reset the "defaults" on pretty much all involved apps.... At the moment I can't view pdfs through gmail and I really need to for work.
Any ideas?
Thanks
hey did you find a fix for this?? im experiencing the same exact thing....
concerning pdfs I had the same experience...
I noticed that my test license of jetcet pdf had expired. I uninstalled, reinstalled...
and it works again.
I am on JF 1.4.1 RC8
I fixed the problem by loading a nandroid backup from the previous day. then i opened gmail and when it asked me what default viewer i would like to use I chose HTML viewer
although it gave me the option of setting ASTRO instead. what i dont get is, why didn't the problem go away after i reset all programs to default and uninstalled ASTRO? mmaybe i should have restarted or something.
im on a stock rc 30 so im guessing id have to get root with one of JFs modded roms before i can do that nandroid? the jetcet program solved the pdf issue but im still force closing when trying to preview docs....html viewer opens independently but not through gmail...really annoying!
i would suggest clearing your defaults for gmail.... also root gives you nandroid yes but yu also need the sdk to flaah the backups. use mybackup as well!
no defaults are set....i guess i have to root to get it to work...
My problem came back! I uninstalled ASTRO, rebooted, and it is still here. No defaults to clear.
Using JF's version of RC33 now.
Also: you don't need root to reset defaults, but if you know how to do it via CLI, tell me! I can't fix it and I am afraid that if I go back to my old backup, update to RC33, it will come back!
getting really frustrated with this...im on a stock rc33 now and i still cant preview docs with html viewer through gmail....i have no idea what to do...i've reset the defaults and nothing?? does anyone have any other possible solutions?
thanks.
Still having the same problem.... I thought it was astro but it wasn't... what do we do?
Yeah, I don't even have Astro installed and it's having this problem. I have Linda File Manager and UnZip installed and that's about all I see that might be interfering...
Not only can I not view PDFs through Gmail, but I can't view any attachments at all.
I hope we find a fix for this...
Hey maybe it's Linda! I did have that installed a while back. I'm gonna do a nandroid backup and the reflash and see what happens.
Well I reflashed (finally got time) and the problem persists--- although I didn't install Linda. Astro is installed, but since you don't have it installed, it must be something else.
Very frustrating; it takes an hour to rebuild my phone (I could just re-flash the backup, but still) and I really want to see this problem resolved.
OKAY I FOUND WHAT CAUSES THE CRASH!!!!
It is an app called download crutch/download crutch lite.
It is a useful app, lets you download files from the browser that it might not recognize (ie zip files).
Anyways uninstall it, then delete the gmail storage/gmail settings from the app uninstaller--- then search for a .doc or .pdf file.
worked for me.
if you DO NOT have this app installed, then I have no idea. This worked for me on a clean install!!!
thanks

[Q] Deleting phone, camera, etc apps?

I just purchased a NC yesterday and I've had a great time playing around with it. I am running the Nook 1.4.1 OS internally and using my SD card to boot MIUI 1.11.4.
I've searched all over the web and I've not been able to find any straight answers one way or another -- is there a way to delete the apps that are obviously meant for a phone? The camera, phone, dialer, messaging, etc apps are pointless on the NC and I'd like to get rid of them. Especially since I can't just delete them off of the desktop in MIUI.
Has anyone been able to do this before?
Thanks a ton!
Erica
AFAIK, there is no way to do this without titanium backup. TiB is available in the market for root users
If you are rooted and have superuser installed, you can use root explorer or es file explorer (with allow root explorer and mount file system as writable Checked in settings) to delete system apps in system/apps. Removing system apps may render apps incompatible with device. Use TitaniumBackup for insurance.
Yeah, I tried all of that but I couldn't get system rw permissions on anything.
Finally found a few tutorials on editing custom roms, and I did that to delete the pointless apps. Getting ready to flash it back onto the NC, so we'll see if it works.
Luckily, I haven't put anything on the nook at all that I would need to save/back up. All I've done the past 48 hours since getting the NC is try out different custom roms to see which one I want to stick with. LOL. And I'm doing it all on the SD card so I can keep the native nook functionality.
Thanks for the replies though. <3
Let us know which ROM you choose. Just curious...

Seconded! I deleted Gtalk one time (it was constantly FCing even when it was running in the background) and the android market stopped working until I put it back on.
There is no real good reason for doing this and a lot of bad ones. They do not use up much if any resources and some apps may make calls to them even though they are not technically used. I would leave well enough alone....
I agree with leaving most stuff alone, but the problesm I'm running into is that the new market fc's. I can uninstall the updates to market and it works fine, but market updater updates it again shortly thereafter. I need to freeze or uninstall market updater, but anything I've tried to use can't mount /system. Any ideas?

You can uninstall the market updater with Titanium Backup.
mounting /system is quite easy with root explorer. I've experimented a lot with removing system apps. I move them into a new sub folder within /system, so I can put them back if something becomes unstable, but for the most part I run a really light /system folder that boots even quicker than without.
root explorer needs to have the "browse as root" option checked in its settings, and then, when you are in the system folder, you need to press "mount r/w" at the top of the screen.
If you just want to optimize battery, removing phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk get the best net benefit. After that, I recommend creating a shortcut to Settings/Accounts & Sync so that you can turn off background data and Automatic Syncing when you are not actively using them. They draw a lot of power over the course of a day. I find that with them off during screen off and wifi off, the battery will not diminish for many days.

[Q] Help, can't install apps whatever I do

Hello. I'm new here, and I'm not sure if this post goes here or in the Apps subforum. If I'm mistaken please forgive me.
I rooted my Nook Touch and I followed some instructions to make the Market app work. But it doesn't search anything so I can't install anything.
I need at least an app to access the filesystem from the PC, or the app "SearchMarket" so I can properly use the Market to install things.
I've tried a lot of things but nothing had worked:
Install SearchMarket from play.google.com and send it to my Nook -> Nothing happens to me.
Install from the PC -> I've read various guides but I can't never connect my Nook to the PC that way, the USB drivers never works.
Install Opera and install apk from there -> I install Opera, but as soon as I launch it, it crashes.
¿A way to install apps, please? I'm desperate here, as nothing I've tried have worked.
I'm not a completely noob, I've root several devices and I know about computers. I'm just new here and for some reason I can't get the guides I read to work.
Thanks in advance.
::::::::::::::::::::::::EDIT::::::::::::::::::::::::
OK, finally managed to install SearchMarket!!!
Now I need to access file system from PC to modify the internal dictionary, because I want to change the language... how can I do that? Thanks!
::::::::::::::::::::::::EDIT2::::::::::::::::::::::::
I guess ES Explorer will do the trick. Thanks anyway xD

help get my rooted nstg functional

hello all
for the past week I've been doing all that I can (but I'm by no means an expert) to get my favorite ol' NSTG rooted. I intend to use it as just a reader with gmail and google voice installed so I can text from it. however, I'm running into more problems than I bargained for. been slowly working on it for a week, tackling one problem after another, but now it seems I'm at my wits end with my inexpert troubleshooting skills. I'm hoping I can glean some of xdas superior hacking abilities. I'm following the root guide as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706.
so far, I have rooted my Nook. Since there is no native file explorer, I cant side load apps from my sdcard. I've installed es file explorer from google.com/play from my tablet onto my nook and that worked fine for about a minute. I tried installing apps, but I was encountering an error message where it says my sdcard is full (which it wasn't). OK, so i need to adb install nookmanagers packageinstaller.apk (page 13 of forum). well, computer sees my nook as a USB storage device, but adb devices refuses to acknowledge my Nook (I've enabled USB debugging). the Nook Imple Tocu driver wasn't installed, although all of the other usb devices associated with my nook installed fine. I factory restore and tried reinstalling the driver to see if it would work. rerooted, but this time added some apps to the glownooter-1-12-25 under data/apps but only 1 app was installed (einknorefresh out of market search, es file explorer, and Renee NST reader). still stuck without a file explorer, I tried reinstalling es file explorer but google play won't let me, thinking I've already on my device. back to adb, the same issue of adb devices not recognizing my device.
so now, I have a rooted NSTG with gmail working, but the native web browser fails after clicking on a google search result, and I have no file explorer (without an idea how to get a file explorer onto it). idk how to access the apks on my sdcard, and if I did, how I could get the package installer.apk working properly, as adb doesn't see my devices.
if all else fails, I'll just try another root method >_<. but honestly, I'm not looking to use this intensely. just to read PDFs that the native reader doesn't do well, with gmail and google voice (maybe even placing calls with a microphones headphones through the microusb port if that possible, as I saw a thread suggesting that), multi touch and USB otg. but hey, one thing at a time here
XDA gods, I leave the fate of my favorite ereader in your hands, and thanks in advance.

Need some help of a rare sort... deleted folders arent deleting!

Ive purchased the full version of No Bloat, trying to get things more manageable on my device.
There are things that are not removing, despite me telling them to.
in system/app/flipboarddebriefing/arm/<somefilename>.odex
this is a reminant of an app i have already removed...so i wanted to fully delete it... but it wont delete!! Root browser says it deleted, for a quick second... but the damn thing stays there.
i *am* rooted, i *have* removed system apps with other apps (at first uninstall master, but since ive discovered that wont recover properly on my device, im using nobloat now).
Why if i have root, and am using a root based browser, are things NOT removing as though i am not rooted??!? I downloaded root checker today, and yes i am in fact rooted successfully.... so what gives? i DONT understand this, not one bit.
Im on rooted but stock samsung galaxy s5 neo, with twrp recovery installed, and a full nandroid backup made. successfully.
I dont understand why some root features are going smooth while others are almost like in high school when deep freeze was installed on the library computers, where no matter what you did, next reset (or in my case, not even a reboot required!) things were exactly as they were *before* you messed wth them, things unchanged.
why is this happening to me?? i never did enable knox so it cant possibly be that... can it??
ETA i have tried going in through the file explorer in twrp... but even in there i cant access the system folder at all, let alone delete things. A few days ago, some things in another folder werent deleting, so i went into twrp and ultimately deleted them, and those did stay deleted.
I just plain dont understand. s2 = root = do whatever the heck you want. s5=root=well remove some apps for you but its remains will stay on your system, for-evvvv-errr.
is there some sort of build in deep freeze type app that i can go in and get rid of (some how, if it will let me, frig).
Can anyone help me with this? Still not working properly...

The reason why it keeps coming back is becoz some of the apps are PRELOADED by default and to get rid of them for good you need to go to the root of those apps.
Use any root explorer app
1. Check /preload/ folder..make sure you delete the apps there as well
2. Check /System/CSC/ and look for any /System/app/ and /System/priv-app/ and do the same as above.
Hmm... I'll give it a look, but I even had problems with deleting data from a user app in the same manner...
Eta, I have nothing in my preload folder at all.. At least not that root browser is seeing.
Tried Flipboard deleting the odex file again, still not working.
Any other suggestions?

Which root/file explorer are you using?
EDIT: Ok I see you said Root browser.
Try another file explorer like ES file explorer
