I am thinking about getting one of these phones for myself, are they easy to get root, I had a DINK2, now I'm using a Sprint phone flashed to verizon, but I think this might be why some of the features don't work.
I want this phone because of its size, unless someone recommends a better phone.

they are easy to root - but your issue could be with flashing ROMs. if you want to flash a custom ROM (4.1.2 or later) you will need to unlock the bootloader - and Motorola has prevented the unlocking on builds after Apr 2013. so check the build date for your device. if it reads May 2013, then you cannot unlock the bootloader (currently). if prior, then unlock it!

I cannot stand a phone that looks so nice and they take away part of the display by adding a toolbar, taking away over 1/2 in of usable area, for this reason, this phone is not for me, I instead want the HTC DNA.
I was looking at the HTC ONE, but even on that phone, they have the lame toolbar.
Thank you everyone.

Well you can always use a custom ROM with PIE controls and expanded desktop. I opposed the navbar at first, but quickly came to prefer it over hardware and capacitive navigation buttons.

I know this is another GalaxyS device, but it seems that there really isnt any interest for it in the community. Does the ticker screen cause enough compatibility issues that we most likely wont see Cyanogen or anything for it? What about support from Samsung, are we likely to fall behind the curve for 2.2 release?
Iv had it for a few days and I love the formfactor, but Im considering swapping it for a fascinate for the modability. Any opinions?
There is currently no support from the developer community, but all it takes is one good dev and we'll be in business. There's really no way of knowing if 2.2 will lag behind, since no US Galaxy S phones have gotten the update yet... Only time will tell on both I'm afraid.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Samsung has began releasing the 2.2 update in certain countries from what I've read. So it should only be a matter of time before the USA gets it. The update will come via Kies I believe (Samsung's update software for PC).
As for custom ROMs for the Continuum, I believe development may be slow for this phone due to the ticker display. The ticker makes it more difficult to develop for. However, I'm confident we'll get some custom ROMs at some point. I'd be really nice if Samsung skipped 2.2 and went straight to 2.3 but that'll never happen.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
One of the first things we are going to need is a custom recovery to be able to backup/restore the phone. I suspect this will take someone loaning their phone to koush in order to get clockwork recovery and rom manager support. I know I am leery to try anything without having a way to restore, even if I have to restore to default.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Yeah a stock ROM would be excellent. There will be plenty of people who delete necessary apps with root access even before custom ROMs are available.
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Well we're gonna need a custom recovery first, so that is one of the bigger issues.
Sent Koush a tweet asking what he would need and offered my phone for a period of time. I still have my D1 I can use.

Glad to see the Continuum Forum up and running! I know very little about development and such, but I'm open to testing out things. I'll be following the threads here as much as possible.
I was thrilled with the idea of this phone when it was released, but the limits on the ticker make it nearly unusable (no gmail? and Samsung's e-mail app is horrible).
I was thinking about returning it, but with the new found forum here on XDA, my hope is renewed.

I don't know if any one has found this but the incredible has been able to do it by changing the system software without rooting it. My friend did this and he was able to use the tether on/off switch on the settings menu without ever having to pay the extra amount. Does anyone know of a method like this for the EVO? I believe its called dun hack.
Yep just run the mikfroyo Rom and its already built in.

@Swaze - he says without rooting the phone. Installing a ROM would require rooting.

If you would like a good step by step guide go to WWW.androidforums.com and go to the EVO section then look in the 'All about Root' section. There will be a 'Rooting guide for Dummies' at the very top. Follow this guide and they will help u with any problems or concerns

Thanks for your input all. But my primary goal is to enable wifi for free without rooting the phone at all, just re programming the setting do that using wifi would use my data plan.

He's not rooted cuz all he did was turn on the tether on the phone from the setting menu and I was able to connect my evo on the verizon network. He has actually done this for two months already without verizon knowing our an increase in his bill.
sounds like he's rooted, that's how you do it on a rooted phone. some reason you don't want to root?

Then flash a rom, they all have free tether..

I know there are a lot of anxious people out there like myself who are stuck without root and S-ON. I have been setting up my SDK and the kitchen over the last few weeks ( I have kids ). If you want to get involved, here is a quick reference to what I have found recently. What I miss most *now* about not having root is the ability to test my own ROMs on my own EVO.

I don't get all the fuss. Taking an OTA update loses root. No secret there. Were a bunch of people so interested in the official GB that they didn't want a day for a rooted rom?
There are those who lost root due to receiving replacement phones and there are those that are new to the evo and received their phone loaded with the update.

I totally agree. I know that fits my situation. My phone should be out on the truck for delivery today. Got my fingers and toes crossed it has an older build on it.
Regarding this post though. Very good idea and I really hope some people that can get this done chime in. Root is desperately needed back to the Evo.
Forgot to mention that when you register as an Android developer in the market, you become eligible to order a fully unlocked phone; Nexus One and HTC dev phone 2.

As it stands......no, too many differences between the devices, however it may lead down the right path to unlocking the OG Evo. Believe me, I'm following it (I have a 3D & my wife just got a refurb warranty OG Evo with the update).

Was wondering if any dev has tried to work this issue from the hardware side. Instead of using C++ or Visual or other languages, trying this thru Assembler language. I'm interested. Please feel free to post or PM me with your thoughts. But, I have to imagine the OS still maintains some degree of control (if it's even possible to compile and execute assembly programs in Android). I'm afraid there's probably a reason no one else has done that . Thanks!

This is true, and we know (at least fairly certainly) that 2.17 is not the official release of 4.2.2 for the One. According to the Football, not even 2.21 is the official.

That's the next update that's in the wings for our phones. This has some new code for Bluetooth and maybe other things I am not familiar with. But with this update alone, I highly doubt tmo will "add" wifi-calling to the N4 or even ever. If they intended it, they would have installed it on the Tmo version/sold by of the N4.
Right, but is it that integrated of an app that someone cannot port it into a custom rom, from a t-mobile phone on jellybean that has wifi-calling?

I don't know the semantics but the gist is not just an apk. I think it intertwines with framework and that's a lot of shifting through code to bring one app to light. I mean there's a thread created with a reward of like over $1,400 to "port" it. lol

Yeah I believe for ICS it still was an app, and easier to work with. But I did notice that in Jellybean it's no longer in app form, and it seems to be tied into the updated sim cards they are running and I guess, more "baked" into the framework itself.
You would think they would come out with a stand-alone app for ppl without actual T-mobile branded phones..
