(Q) How to full wipe with TWRP?

Hello!
Only one question..
Im on 4.2.2 with new baseband
When i want to wipe all my data,so i have the whole space back, what button i have to push in twrp ? Wipe data only or more?
And after that i can push my PA 3.0 via adb push on my nexus and flash it without problems ? Thank you guys and sorry for my noob english,i hope u understand what i want to do

In TWRP, click Wipe, then Format Data. Be warned, you'll lose everything, including backups.

Does it erase TWRP itself?
Does it erase EFS as well?
I assume after I press this, I will have to push a rom in via Odin for example?

No not really as I never clicked Format Data before.
I assume it doesn't wipe TWRP itself... but I just want to be sure.
As for EFS I asked because I have a persistent No Service - Selected Network Unavailable showing up since a few days ago. Restore, Full Wipe, Restart, Reconnecting, nothing works. I suspect it might be the EFS partition (TWRP never backed it up as it always fails when it gets to that point, the backup works fine regardless)
So I am down to probably doing a Full Data wipe and install a fresh rom to see if it will fix it.

You don`t have to wipe if you flash a factory image in fastboot. Everything will be erased after the wipe. Look here for how to do it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312.

I'd like an answer to this too.
I want to nuke all data on my N4 (I've saved backups and media on my PC), so that i have a clean phone ready to flash a new ROM (copied across by USB after the wipe) so that any old program folders are gone and I've got a clean slate. But don't want to lose my TWRP recovery/root etc.
I recall that CWM had an option to wipe everything but still had the sense to avoid wiping itself! What's the point of a recovery that nukes itself in the process? That's just retarded - no offence.

So thanks to this forum, I thought I bricked my phone last night (well I kinda did). I used the format option on TWRP and magic happened, I was stuck at the logo. I figured I'd just use Odin to flash my official rom, which worked fine. Now I wanna flash the rom I had before formatting but want all the space back (I dont want all of the bloatware folders and bull**** that result from the official rom, which is why I used format in the first place). My questions is: Can I use format now that I have my official rom running and then push a custom rom through Odin? Will that work or not?

If you use twrp and factory reset it will wipe data not the sd partition if you wipe system it wipes the ROM if you wipe data it will wipe SD partition including your backups. None of those will remove your recovery. Nothing will touch efs partition this is not a Samsung device

You are showing a complete lack of understanding on the subject. I would recommend doing more reading before you mess with your device.
It is impossible to have root when you don't have a rom on your phone. Clearing all data erases root as well. Flashing a rooted rom (nearly all are rooted) establishes root again.
Wiping data in recovery does not wipe the recovery for one extremely simple reason - recovery has its own partition on any device. The only way recovery could ever be wiped is by flashing a recovery.img file by fastboot (such as the Google factory images).

For some reason in my HTC One X wipe sdcard doesn't work with twrp. I've noticed that in the hardest and surprising way once that j was trying to flash a new rom and before flash I hit the wipe sdcard button. It supposed to delete everything but I didn't. Thanks god it didn't wiped my data, but now that I am safe I want to delete all from recovery and it just don't work.

lol nonono I have a samsung galaxy S4 i337M. Sorry for posting in the wrong section but this is all I found on XDA regarding TWRP formatting option.

Thanks for your reply, sorry my knowledge of this subject isn't as strong as yours.
So I can choose wipe data, then copy a new ROM using USB and flash on a clear device?

Yes. U will need to use adb to push the ROM after wiping data though.

[Q] Has Anyone Gotten TWRP to work since MJA/MK2??

I have a consistent problem with Philz recovery since MJA & MK2 were installed, it won't restore my data partition. I would like to go back to TWRP 6.3.0.1 which worked flawlessly prior to MJA and the Knox changes. I have tried restoring System & Boot partitions with Philz then flash TWRP and restore the data partition but I get bootloops when I restart.
My question is has anyone been successful in using TWRP to flash, backup & Recover the S4 with MJA/MK2 installed?

I installed it with GooManager. Seems to work fine. I have the latest 4.3 MK2 installed. Now if I can just have my wifi back.....

All depends on the ROM you're using and how you're setting up you backup partitions.
There are plenty of walkthroughs on how to use Philz or the lates TWRP in the specific ROM threads.

I have read dozens of threads, hundreds of posts and haven't seen anyone having success restoring from TWRP a TW ROM.

HOW TO BACKUP
Go into recovery, select BACKUP
I WANT EVERYTHING... SO I select BOOT, SYSTEM, DATA, CACHE, RECOVERY, EFS
At the top select "BACKUP NAME" and add/change as you see fix then press GO
STORAGE SHOULD BE STORAGE:MICRO SDCard... if not tap it and select it then go back
swipe bottom slider and wait while backup performs it thing.

HOW TO RESTORE
Go into recovery, Go to WIPE
ADVANCE WIPE

At the top STORAGE SHOULD BE STORAGE:MICRO SDCard... if not tap it and select it then OK or go back
Find your Backup that you want to restore...select it

Latest (2.6.3 - Reverepats zip) should work. It's really kind of weird some devices it works flawlessly others not so much.
I'm such a back freak I use Philz AND the latest TWRP to make nands of my ROMs just in case.

Encryption that can't be formated

Hi,
I set up TWRP 2.8.7.0 and cm-13.0-20160129 on my Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A (GT-I9506), and run into an odd problem where it would work after install, but would not work after a reboot (booting screen would just roll for ever). Installing CM again, would work, and than the problem would still be there. Mindlessly I decided to play a little anyway and set up encryption. The phone ended up rebooting, and not loading, so I'm here without a password (default_password doesent work) and with an encrypted /data that TWRP cant wipe or format
Unable to mount storage.
Unable to decrypt data
Unable to wipe '/data' -- unknown file system 'auto'
Unable to format to remove encryption

I've attempted to use ADB to format it, but it seems parted isnt installed. With that phone being a less popular variant I'm kind of afraid to just flash whatever there, but I guess I need a recovery with a least parted, or possibly one that would be able to format the drive itself. Any pointers?

not yet; I don't have windows, and didn't see any point in changing the soft used for flashing, will try but cant download the polish rom at the moment o0 (ends up with a dead link or a server down?)

I know of no other way to flash a stock ROM from sammobile.com other than Odin.
Did you create a free account on sammobile.com to enable the regular download?

You can also flash it with Heimdall. It's the open source variant of Odin.

aaaand I'm back, managed to download, got some windows, flashed to stock using odin, and it's still encrypted. is running 'repartition' from odin safe? I've noticed some warnings against it but without any explanations.
edit; running the same operation with repartition failed. this bloody encryption might be able to survive nuclear war.

After flashing back to stock via Odin, did you perform a factory wipe before booting the rom for the first time?
I assume you have a pit file for the phone since you repartitioned?

never managed to do that. I wonder what advantage does the wipe from factory ROM have over custom recoveries... anyways thanks to all who helped, the issue is solved. also it seems that the problems with non-rebooting CM were my mistake of not wiping the cache/dalvik after install

I find that a wipe using a custom recovery is not always as through as a stock recovery. Can't say how or why, it's just based on my experience with Samsung and Nexus phones.

I think the difference is that a custom recovery only wipes /data partition so that the internal sdcard will not be wiped. The stock recovery formats /data partition. When you want to lose encryption you need to format /data partition.
You can also format the /data partition with a custom recovery, but that option is hidden for good reason. Because it will also format your internal sdcard and that's not something we want to do when changing roms.

No OS to boot

Help help help!!! I am having a strange issue since last night. Wanted to install the MIUI ROM and since I was earlier on nougat I thought I will do a clean install so installed the stock Marshmallow ROM freshly And installed the TWRP through ODIN and as usual after installing the TWRP, also flashed no decrypt thing and also did Format. Now it says there is no OS to boot. Flashed this ROM but still no luck. So basically when I do Format it's wiping out the OS as well and after that no matter what I flash its not booting up. Tried the whole process some 5 times with no luck. What on the earth could be possibly doing wrong? How is it wiping out the OS too when I do the Format? This is the first time it has happened to me. Any help is really appreciated!!!

Use Odin to flash stock rom and then start from scratch.

Did that 4 times now and the same damn thing is happening. Tried different versions of TWRP too but with no luck. This is so frutrating

TWRP has nothing to do with Odin. Does Odin 'pass' when you flash stock? What files are you flashing with Odin?

The phone boots up when i flash the Stock ROM through Odin, but when i install the TWRP and then do the Format option, Its wiping the OS too. Very strange. And later it doesnt boot up irrespective of what ROM i flash. Tried it so manytimes and same thing is happening.

Why are you wiping anything after twrp install?

If you are going to wipe anything, only dalvik and cache.

After installing the TWRP, the internal storage shows as 0mb until i format it completely. Hence have to Format.

so, odin stock, reboot...it loads, right? Odin TWRP and reboot. Shouldn't be any wiping required that way

Well i dont know how you did it, but it clearly says in the tutorial that after installing the TWRP the phone needs to be formatted. And if i dont, then the TWRP wouldnt recognize my internal storage. Hence i have to format it completely. The strange thing is, i have done it in the past and it would never wipe the OS but for some reason its doung now.

Nowhere in that tutorial did it even mention the word 'format'

Well the problem at the moment is, if i dont wipe it completely after installing TWRP, the internal storage shows as 0 mb. Doesnt this happen to all? And the internal storage shows up only after i do a complete wipe. What could be possibly wrong? And is full wipe supposed to wipe the OS as well?

Why don't you just install twrp and reboot to see what happens.

Let me give that a try. I am sure it reboots normally. But for installing a custom ROM i need to wipe it completely and thats when the OS is getting wiped too.

Thats a totally different issue. To install a new rom, put it on your sd card, fully wipe device then install new rom. After you make a twrp backup of course.

Well thats when i am facing this issue. After installing the twrp i tried installing a custom ROM and it says cant mount storage. And when i wipe it completely and flash a ROM,it doesnt boot up. Have been flashing for years now, this had never happened. What i am not able to understand is, hows it wiping the OS too. Bluddy frutrating.

Use the FORMAT DATA button. It's right there under the WIPE options next to the ADVANCED WIPE button. That should solve your problems.

Well now i have installed the twrp and it did boot normally, but again in TWRP the internal storage is showing as 0mb. And FORMAT DATA is what i have been doing each time and its formatting the OS too.

So I'm manning up and saying that I did indeed screw up this phone, but to what extent is unknown to me.
Didn't make any backups or anything. Can this phone be saved?
I can get to the fastboot screen and I can also get to TWRP... but that's it. Otherwise it stays at the T-Mobile white screen.

Lets cover the basic questions. Have you wiped cache and dalvik cache? have you wiped data? have you factory reset? have you flashed a rom (as in .zip file compatible with twrp)? did you flash a rom not meant for your phone?
Truth to be told. this does not look like bootloop nor brick. if it were brick, i dont think it would even pass from the first screen. Maybe some of your system files got corrupt. Reflashing the stock rom should solve the issue.

I've wiped everything TWRP lets me wipe (Dalvik/ART Cache, System,Data, Internal Storage, Cache, Micro SD Card, USB OTG). When I do the factory reset it tells me "No OS Installed" but I'm sure I picked the stock one.
I'm thinking you're right about the files getting corrupt (or maybe I accidentally deleted something important ). I actually wouldn't mind reflashing the stock rom, but I think the one I have is corrupt or I'm flashing it wrong, orrr I'm following an outdated guide.

Copy a rom for your version. H918. Or download Alpha rom for h918 then flash it through recovery. But don't forget to format only, "format data", internal storage then flash the rom. You should be good to go. I am here to help

Hey, thanks, flashed (Discontinued) Alpha Omega Rom zip through TWRP and I got the phone working again. However, I can't download the T-Mobile security update... not sure if I even need it though. Everything else seems to be in working order.

No u can't and u shouldn't if not it might cause an issue. Alpha rom is a stock rooted and tweaked rom. No need to update. Only the dev can do that. Just keep using it that way.
