Won't boot to TWRP recovery after flashing to 4.3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi all, I'm new here (great place, very informative) and pretty new to the Android scene in general.
As the title said, My AT&T S4 won't boot to recovery after I flashed 4.3 JWR663. Worked fine before and 4.3 is working great, but I can't get to TWRP. When I hold "power + volume up" I get the blue text dialog indicating its going to boot to recovery and the phone just shuts off. I can boot to download mode, but haven't done anything out of fear. I'm not rooted (which is what I'd like to do once this is fixed).
Should I try and re-flash TWRP? Any other suggestions? Feel free to break it down like you're talking to a child. Thanks in advance.

Try flashing it. Get goomanager from the play store. Open it and hit the menu button. Hit install openrecoveryscript.

You'll need root to flash a recovery with GooManager.
How did you install 4.3? I assume that it's a custom 4.3 as I don't think it has been officially released yet. If it's custom, I'd assume that the ROM had been rooted as well...

I was rooted, but the ROM had it removed and I need to flash Chainfire to get it back. But I can't get into recovery to do so. I think the ROM was done by Jah0n
Is it safe to flash TWRP with Odin now? If so, could you point me to the directions to help me do so. Thanks again for the help.

Found a fix!
My recovery is fine. All I did was power down, try to boot into recovery with "power + volume up + home" and just when the phone vibrated to boot into recovery, I let go of the power button but continued holding the other buttons. It booted into TWRP just fine.

Yep, that's the way you're supposed to get into recovery.

I an able to get in with only power+vol up. Both work for me.

This thread is about the Samsung Galaxy s4.

Hi there. I'm new of this forum and even of the Android customization scenario. I have a Samsung Galaxy s4 i-9505 with 5.0.1 firmware and build LRX22C.I9505XXUHPK2. I've tried to install TWRP with Odin3 (so without root my phone) and all the procedure goes well. After reboot, I have turned-off my phone and I've tried to enter in the TWRP's recovery mode (using the combo buttons: VolumeUP + Home button + Power button) but the "TEAMWIN" logo didn't appear and the normal "Android Recovery Menu" were visualized.
I need some help to undestand if I did some mistakes during the flashing process. I've used the last versione of TWRP (3.1.1-0 for jfltexx). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

If you want to root with TWRP, try this for the gt-i9505:
open Odin 3.07 and uncheck everything except r reset time;
download the tar version of twrp for the gt-i9505: https://dl.twrp.me/jfltexx/
download the latest version of supersu.zip and copy it to an sd card or the phone's internal storage: http://www.supersu.com/download;
place the sd card in the phone if twrp has been saved to the sd card from the step above;
connect the phone in download mode and flash twrp in Odin's PDA slot;
when you see the word "reset" in the status window, remove USB cable from the phone, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, install supersu.zip, reboot.
If you just want to install a custom ROM, copy the ROM to the internal or external sd card, install twrp, and install the ROM. Root is not required to install a custom ROM, only a custom recovery.
Warning: whenever you flash anything to a phone, it is always possible for something to go wrong and you must be prepared to deal with any consequences. I have used this method for several note 2, note 3, s3, and s4 phones without any issues. With this being said, I can't guarantee that the above steps will work for your phone or your phone won't be bricked.

It happened to me to. Do this like I did and it will work.
First, get in download mode then flash CF auto root via Odin, it Will give you root access. Reboot the phone, click on superuser and click yes to remove Knox.
Then get in download mode again and flash the custom recovery of your choice. Then let the phone reboot. Sign in with your Google account then go to play store and download the quick boot app free version. Launch it and click recovery, it Will ask you to grant root access, grant it and there you go, you will reboot in recovery no issues.
After that you'll be able to reboot into recovery manually by pressing volume up, home button and power button anytime just like it is supposed to.
I don't know why it didn't in the first place but this method works and it is super easy.

Recovery Help on Galaxy S4

Hello,
I've rooted my phone using the towelroot method and everything seems to be ok. I checked my root status and it came back clean. Got the SuperSU and installed the binary. Now the problem is, I have a bad recovery. Everytime I go to install a ROM from SD, or use ROM manager to install a rom, my phone boots into recovery but I get the "Could Not Boot Normal" - Odin Mode
Downloading... Do not turn off target! And it just hangs there. I'm able to reboot using vol down + home + power and cancelling the "download" - but there shouldn't be anything to download - the ROM is on my SD card. Does this mean that I have a curropted recovery? I currently have both ClockworkMod and TWRP installed. I can't seem to get rid of one or the other.
Any recommendations? I really want to throw a 4.4.3 Rom on this device.
Thanks in advance.
You cannot instal custom ROM from stock recovery.
You need to have custom recovery (CWM, TWRP...) but this step void knox to 0x1.

And if you install a custom recovery you will void your warranty......
EDIT sorry i did not read the last part of the reply of verny94
HI guys,
Thanks for the replies, though I'm not sure I understand them. I have two recoveries installed, according to Rom Manager - Clockworkd and TWRP. Are these the stock recoveries? I guess I thought that's all I needed. I'm not concerned about the warranty too much.

Thanks for the reply! When I go to ROM Manager and select "Reboot into Recovery" it asks if I want to boot into Clockworkmod. I hit yes, and the phone reboots, but then goes to the this (attached) page and stays there. Then I have to do Vol down Home Power to cancel the "download" to boot normally.
I had a Droid Eris and HTC Thunderbold that I successfully rooted back in their day - but this one click towelroot seems to have screwed me up a little - though to be fair, the majority of fault probably rests at my feet.

Do not use any Managers etc. They´ve made a lot of problems.
If you don´t have problem with warranty use CF-Auto-Root. Towelroot is good only for people who wants warranty.
CWM or TWRP flash via Odin and you will see

I'm currently having the same problem and my recovery mode always sends me to Odin mode. Were you able to fix it in any way?

rooting and TWRP update problem

hello all.
im using a G2 D800 AT&T, and since i have a tethering problem which i was assured would be fixed if i installed a new ROM.
so i went ahead with a guide for cloudyg3 rom, rooted using towelroot and verified with root checker, all is well.
installed TWRP with freegee- the TWRP version was 2.6.3.3 and i was told i needed to upgrade it to at least 2.7.1.. thats where problems started.
i couldnt for the life of me upgrade it to any version, 2.7.1 or higher, and TWRP showed a loki.sh problem. thought maybe unrooting and starting the process all over would fix it so i deleted all my apps, then unrooted with supersu.
tried to root with towelroot and no go. immediately after trying to root, root chekcer gave me a "device is not rooted" answer (before there was no problem), and the device reboots just after im trying to remove towelroot from the task manager (center button).
did i mess up my phone so it cant root? is there a way to check that\ other root methods?
please help
Try other methods like ioroot and if still not working flash a new kdz via download mode and reroot with some method. And btw you can easily update twrp by flashing just a zip but don't forget to restart the recovery after flashing and restore defaults under setting. And next time try autorec

first, thanks for your help.
second, i got the device rooted and all, installed TWRP through freegee and downloaded newer version (2.7.1),
and when i booted the device into TWRP mode and tried updating to 2.7.1. , THE SAME THING HAPPEND AS BEFORE-
i just cant update the twrp to more than 2.6.3.3., no matter what version i try (2.7.1 or higher).
getting error message of: assert failed: run_program (temp\loki.sh)
error executing updater binary in zip \sdcard
error flasing zip \sdcard\download\...
updating partition details.
and getting two options: wipe chache\ dalvik, and reboot system.
this happend to me with EVERY TWRP UPDATE I TRY...
and from my understanding i must update twrp to more than 2.6.3.3 before trying to flash new roms.
thats the problem i had before as well, device simply wouldnt update to more than 2.6.3.3
thanks...
I rooted with towelroot then used AutoRec (link) to install TWRP on mine then updated to 2.8.3.1 from blastagator (link) via the older TWRP I installed.
WTF...PROBLEM
i installed autorec, clicked okay and got into the twrp boot recovery mode again, and tried to instal new version with same failed result (pictures added).
but then, i clicked on reboot, device rebooted, BUT DIDNT BOOT BACK TO NORMAL SCREEN.
now the screen is black with a green\blue led that keeps flashing and wont stop.
computer recognizes the device when connected with a USB.
WTF?

when i try to call the phone is off
please help
the phone seemed to be in twrp 2.7.0 although it showed me a failed result
I'm not very sure but maybe its was something from the freegee app... you should't have any loki error
So your screen its COMPLETELY black?.. even you hold the power button or something it didnt show anything on screen?...at least if you hold the power button the led stops to flash?
UPDATE
so after i did hard factory reset i am in boot recovery mode, with a twrp version of 2.7.0.0
still cant get past the LG logo (LED keeps flashing) but at least i can be in recovery mode.
computer recognizes that the phone is connected with USB but cant get it to appear as MTP
thanks
i read up and i THINK im in a boot loop.
maybe i was really stupid- are you suppose to use autorec only on kitkat devices and nothing else? my device is 4.2.2.
Yea, I'm on the same boat. I was on 10b (4.2.2) tried using freegee. Freegee said it didn't support my device went to auto rec. Auto rec managed to flash trwp made the backup then was told to reboot the phone. Then I got the same black screen with the blue green led. I plugged in he phone to the computer and pressed volume up and the power button and I got the hard reset option. I confirmed the hard and now I have rebooted into twrp.
Word of the wise: once in trwp don't restore your backup. It doesn't work. See other thread on this.

[Q] Odin not sending over recovery

Hello,
I have the T-Mobile variant of the S5 and I am trying to install a custom recovery and it doesn't send it over to my phone. I tried to push over both TWRP and Philz Touch and Odin3 said they both succeed in installing. However, when I go into recovery, it shows the stock recovery still. At the top it says "Android system recovery <3e> LRX1T.G900TUVU1DOB1". I have been looking it up for a while now and I can't seem to figure it out. I do have Android version 5.0 stocked and not rooted on my phone.
How I tried to do it in Odin:
I made sure that only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time were selected.
Then I checked off PDA and navigated to both the philz_touch_6.57.8-klte.tar.md5 and flashed it. After I rebooted my phone I went to check the recovery and it was still stock. It was the same exact way with the openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-gt-klte.tar file I flashed.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Brandon
I have same problem on dual sim variant.

Hmmmmmm, well good to know it isn't just my phone. I also forgot to mention I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit edition with the latest Samsung drivers.
Happened here too, ended up having to root with "CF Auto Root", then install TWRP recovery with "TWRP Manager" from Google Play (Free)
It's because of the auto reboot. That needs to be unchecked, after the flash is done, pull the battery and reboot into recovery using the buttons.

I'm panicking a bit and i'd really need help :(

Hello ! So i'm bit stressed now cause i never had an unpullable battery before on my samsung.
So i just got from my cousin a galaxy s6 edge plus, and i want to root it. so installed odin and flashed twrp-3.1.0-0-zeroflte.img.tar
However now it kept being on the samsung logo. So i had to e press and hold the Volume down and Power/Lock keys on the device for 10–20 seconds to power it off. But it keeps rebooting, and now, it's only a black screen with a blue led. I don't know what to do, i'd really need your help. Thank you I'm so worried gosh.
update 1: i tried to force shut down by pressing the buttons and it used to display the samsung and carrier logo then be stuck on samsung logo, but now it just shows samsung galaxy, turn off and the recent apps et return buttons blinking. Kinda scary. I'm waiting for the battery to discharge, hopefully it will work I need your help
The zerolte is for the S6 EDGE, you want the zenlte
http://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys6edgeplus.html
You should be able to hold vol down, home and power buttons to get into download mode to flash it.
Use the power and volume down button to force reset and when it does quickly press all 3.
Thank you for your time ! i did as you said, i entered twrp recovery mode and performed a wipe, but i'm still in a bootloop ! any ideas ?
EDIT : but i installed the new twrp over the old one might it be conflicting ?
I went back to 3.0.2.0 and don't have a bootloop issue anymore, it may be the latest update giving the issues.
Ehhh going back to the 3.0.2.0 didn't work either. I have the TWRP menu, have wiped, but i'm still in a bootloop. :/ I'm happy cause it's not bricked but i still use my phone...any help appreciated guys :<

Just download the latest firmware for your smartphone (SM-G928x (Replace the x with your spessific model number on the back)) and your country from sammobile.com and flash it through odin. This should wipe your data and perform a clean reflash of the stock ROM. After that procedure it will take about 10 minutes to boot and it should be working again
sammobile is pretty slow is SamFirm okay ? And thanks i'l ltry this !
ok so i tried to flash the rom from sam firm for my SM-G928F SFR but it just shows up with a failed... any ideas ?
I had an issue trying to flash stock Rom back, I was trying to flash an older version and it failed, i downloaded the latest for my model and it worked. Are you sure you downloaded the right one?

I presume you ave the SM-G928F S6 Edge +. Just flashing TWRP will cause boot loop. Please see post and flash via twrp the section 12. This should stop the bootloop. Allways remember never turn of OEM locking if you have a custom recovery.
" If you only want a bootable system partition or readable data in TWRP:
Download dm-verity and force encryption disabler.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.
** If your internal storage is encrypted, you will need to use adb sideload instead."
