I have searched (not very thoroughly though lol) for how to install a permanent recovery (TWRP) and how to transfer files from my computer to my Nexus, but no go.
I was able to unlock bootloader, fastboot and adb is working fine, however, I can't transfer any files to my SD Card! In storage (settings) I have tried un-abling and enabling MTP, yet no luck. Any suggestions or links to a particular thread that I may have missed? Thanks guys

I suggest you go into devmgmt.msc (device manager) and look for any devices that say nexus 7 and remove the drivers.
Then unplug, plug in the tablet and use the Google drivers from here to reinstall.

Didn't work, but what did was right clicking on the driver, picked let me choose driver, and chose the USB option and clicked next. Everything worked perfect after that

Turn on USB Debugging.
Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging
Worked for me
First, make sure you are using the pull down menu on your phone to select mount sd card. If that isn't the problem then you probably need to download and install the drivers from samsung on your computer. There is a link I'm sure you can find in the xda forums with a step by step directions for this exact problem.

This is part "bump" and part assistance. You can at least get the Nexus 7 connected via ADB using these steps:
enable USB debugging
install the Android SDK (from Android's developer site)
from the SDK manager install the latest version of the USB driver too.
Make sure your Nexus 7 is hooked up.
Go into your device manager (Start > Control Panel > Device Manager)
navigate to the right Nexus device (not MTP in this case),
right click it,
click Update Device Drivers.
Choose your own driver manually.
When asked for a folder, navigate to C:\[your username]\AppData\Local\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
make sure searching in folders is checked
...that should at least get the ADB driver running. From there you can PUSH or PULL files or open the SHELL, but I don't know of a client-side file manager that makes those things easy yet. This is just one step of many, I bet...
2 things
Have you the latest win media player installed on PC? If not, update it.
Is n7 USB debugging on? If so, turn it off.
That should allow MTP to begin. If not, try the previous post

If your using a N or KN version of Windows 7, you can't use MTP. N and KN versions of Windows have media foundation and other media-specific features stripped from it; and MTP itself does not work.
If you are on such an OS, then this media pack may help:

ADB works without a problem.. it is just hte MTP that wont show up
I have the same issue. If I select PTP, the camera shows. Once I switch back to MTP, it goes away and no disks are displayed. In Device Manager I see Android Phone, I installed Google drivers and adb works. I have a Google Nexus also and is OK.

Here's the official documentation from Google for enabling this protocol.
"Transfer files through USB" (Google this** and click the link by support.google.com)
Relevant Info:
On your device, make sure that the USB computer connection is set to “Media device (MTP).”
Go to Settings > Device > Storage. Then open Menu > USB computer connection.
MTP should be selected by default, but you may have to uncheck MTP, check and uncheck Camera (PTP), and then recheck MTP.

While my original NC is running quite well with the CM10 nightlies, I have lost my ability to use the USB cable as my file transfer source since leaving CM 7.2.
I now do all of my files transfers directly to the SD card by removing it and accessing it directly via my computer.
I get the following when the cable is connected: "USB device not recognized".
I have tried both Media Device and Mass Storage settings to no avail.
This was not an issue with CM 7.2.
Seems to be the only real issue I am experiencing since I was able, with forum help, to redo my inadvertently updated NetFlicks.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First, don't call the ROM JZ054K, it is CM10. You confuse folks. The problem probably is you have USB debugging enabled. Go to settings, developer options and uncheck Android debugging.

Followed your suggestion and unchecked Android Debugging. Rebooted and then hooked up the USB/Recharge cable. Still have same result with the "USB device not recognized" being displayed by Win7/64 with both Media Device or Mass Storage being selected.
Any other paths to explore on this?
Utilized my ROM nomenclature based on "About tablet: Bulid Number" and will switch to CM10 if that is a confusing issue.

The device id and vendor id are different in the CM10 from CM7, you would need to edit the android_winusb.inf file to include them.

Are you sure it is still unchecked? Did you go back and look after rebooting. You should not have to reboot to turn it off. That device not recognized issue is it is looking for ADB drivers because the debugging box is checked.

The only thing I can think of is to go device manager in Windows and uninstall any devices in portable devices, android phone and under USB controllers, any mass storage devices. Then unplug and replug it back in, assuring debugging is still of. You should now get messages that things are installing, hopefully automatically.

I'm having the same issue, was using the Dec 2 and now 3 nightly. when I get time tonight I will roll back to Dec 1 since I know it was working there. Win7/Win8 here fyi
Unsuccessful
Tried: "...and under USB controllers, any mass storage devices." This actually allowed WE to show "Nook Color" but when I clicked on it, there was nothing there. The unit did temporarily display a USB connection at that time also.
Again, this was not an issue under CM7.2.
Thanks for your ongoing assist!
Update: Okay tried every conceivable way of deleting some or all of USB drivers under DM and reinstalling. Even went into BIOS and turned down USB 3.0 to 2.0!
Again erratically got the Andoid USB screen temporarily a couple of times but could not maintain it.
Definitely getting a Windows "Code 43" error indicator.

Went there (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34954992) ...did that. Did not work at first, but it did work (somewhat) after I went back in and deleted the three drivers. I was then able to connect and utlilize WE to probe and adjust both emmc and sdcard. Calibre recognized that it was connected but I could not transfer anything directly from it to the NC.
Thanks for all of the help with this. Since I am probably around eight weeks from purchasing my HD+, I will just use the SD card to manually transfer files.
Interesting issue nonetheless!

I'm running Windows 7 64bit and followed the Ultimate guide to unlock and root my Nexus 4.
Everything went well but now it looks like that Windows won't recognize my phone as a device. When I plug in the phone, the auto-play window will pop out and recognize it as Nexus 4, but there is no other options. (Normally the auto-play will ask if open folder to view files or transfer photos). I can't see my phone in device manager either.
If I turn on the USB debugging mode, I can see it in device manager but still cannot see it in My Computer. Looks like Windows can't access the SD card at all.
I tried switching to the camera mode but the problem remained. Please help.

thanks for your advice. the problem is that, without USB debugging mode on, I can't see Nexus 4 in Device manager, even though the Windows Auto-play will say Nexus 4 connected. (Nothing in My Computer either)
With USB debugging mode on, I uninstalled the driver and Windows would try installing the driver. Now it shows up as MTP device with an exclamation mark. I tried manually update the driver (direct it to the Google SDK folder and pick the android_windowsusb.inf) but it says it does not support x64. I don't think the 64 bit driver is digitally signed.
I think I had a similar problem as yours. If you deleted the drivers while on debugging mode and reconnected after and it's showing the exclamation mark of a unknown device, try restarting your computer and plugging your phone back in.

i did and it remains the same.
Is there anyway I can know all the files names of the drivers so that I can manually delete them from system folder? When I uninstalled it from the device manager, I don't see the option "Delete the driver software for this device".
I can still see it under "adb devices" list.
I think there are some conflicts in the drivers.
Now when I connect Nexus 4 (without USB debugging mode on), it will show up in device manager under Android Device.
With USB debugging, it will then show up under Portable Devices.
However, it's supposed to work the other way around. that is (no USB debugging --> portable device; with USB debugging --> Android Device).
How can i solve this?
Have you tried manually installing the drivers before plugging in the phone, vs letting windows choose the drivers it wants to install? One option you could try is installing PDA Net on your pc. It will install reliable drivers on your pc.
i also had this same problem after flashing my first custom rom on the n4, and i also run windows 7 Ultimate x64
here is the process i use for full clean installation of device
on phone
goto SETTINGS > STORAGE > (menu) USB Computer Connection
make sure Media Device (MTP) is checked
With USB Debugging On
On your PC go to device manager
there should be 2 devices (Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface & Portable Devices > Nexus 4) - this is on a fully working n4 so you might only have 1 of them
Right click on each of them and click uninstall
The popup box should have another check box to delete the driver also, if this is available check it then confirm (note mine only has the box for Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface, but if yours has it on both then check it on both)
your computer will now ask you to restart, dont do it yet
repeat previous step for the other device if you have 2 then reboot
upon rebooting it will automatically start reinstalling drivers
by expanding the selection you should see 2 devices
Nexus 4 - Successful - Ready To Use (this is your MTP connection)
Nexus 4 - Unsuccessful - No Driver Found (this is your ADB Connection)
at this point you should be able to access internal storage however ADB will not work
go back into device manager
you should now have
Portable Devices > Nexus 4
and Other Devices > Nexus 4 (with yellow exclamation mark)
right click on the Other Devices > Nexus 4 (with yellow exclamation mark)
hit Update Driver Software
click Browse my computer for driver software
click Let Me Pick Drom a List of Device Drivers On My Computer
double click Show All Devices
click Have Disk...
click Browse
navigate to the download directory for the google usb drivers (for me this was "C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\Android-SDK\Extras\Google\Usb_Driver")
double click on the android_winusb.inf file
click OK
double click "Android Composite ADB Interface"
it will then install the driver for ADB
you should now have full access to internal storage and ADB

Have you tried toggling to ptp mode then back to mtp on your phone. It's odd indeed.
The fact that you can't remove the driver is because that is the mtp one which is built in to media player. Let me give this some more thought
EDIT: You said that with USB debugging disabled your device is listed under device manager as an android device
can you check and verify exactly what it is listed as? as it should be portable device

I have this same issue I'm trying to find a fix, that's how I found your thread. Alex gave very good info make sure you go back to his posts and hit his "Thanks" button, I did it on everyone one of his posts in this thread. I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue and not a software issue, I've never had this issue on any device. When I got it new running stock 4.2.2 MTP didn't work. ADB works and PTP works, just not MTP no matter what I try. I recommend you learn to use, ADB push and pull to move your files if you don't already know how to use it (To use ADB I need to check PTP for it to work and not MTP) you might need to do the same. I will keep you posted if I find a fix.

I'm just getting more and more confused with this.
If Adb works then you must have an Adb driver installed for the phone. However your also stating that you get no box for uninstall driver.
With USB debugging disabled you said that it appears as an android phone rather than a portable device. This should not be.
With debugging disabled what happens if you Try to uninstall in device manager

My theory still stands that you have updated the mtp driver with adb drivers. Hence why mtp doesn't work but ptp does.
The problem is getting to a position where you can uninstall the adb drivers from the mtp device and let it reinstall the proper drivers

I plugged another Nexus 4 in, and all the drivers loaded perfectly. I then tried my Nexus 4 phone, and nothing happens. No mtp, no adb, no boot loader drivers. Its my phone. My next step is to find a zip file that I can flash via custom recovery, which will bring all the binaries and ROM back to stock. Anybody know where I can find this? I'll probably lose the custom recovery, but hopefully it will be fixed and I can flash the custom recovery again.

After Playing around for hours, I've discovered the following method to FIX Windoze 7 Nexus 7 (N7) MTP mounting. Using PTP (mount as camera) is mostly useless since it limits the type of files you can exchange. To set up your Nexus 7 (2012 at least) Follow the Following Steps:
Put N7 in MTP mode
Connect to windows
Open 'My Computer'
If the N7 is not there, open 'Device Manager' (Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage')
If connected in 'Device Manager' as ADB device at the top of the list:
Open up 'Developer Options' on the N7 (Should be at the bottom of the 'Settings' list. if it's not there tap on 'About Tablet' then at the bottom, tap on 'Build Number' seven (7) times. Then go back to 'Settings' and 'Developer Options' will be the second from the bottom of the list)
Un-check USB debugging... see if N7 appears in My computer
Then, while connected, re-enable USB debugging
It'll probably go away again...
Go back into 'Device Manager'
Uninstall driver for ADB device *Including local files*
Wait about 15 seconds
Scan for hardware changes
Your PC should re-install the correct drivers
That's it... This method has worked for a number of people I have chatted with so, hopefully it'll work for you.

Confirmed working with New Nexus 7 and Windows 8
I had tried every other solution, this one did the trick for my 2013 Nexus 7.
Thank you!
Thank you so much. This has been bugging me for a while.
Worked beautifully.
Thanks, finally a solution that works flawlessly!
New Nexus 7 & Windows 8
No matter what I do, I cant get MTP to install. I'm using Vista. I was able to transfer data before, I dont know what changed. I tried to install MTP with Debugging on and off to no avail. I'm also using a Nexus 10.

Have you downloaded the drivers from Samsung?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4
I'm not sure. I downloaded the SDK Manager and Samsung Keis but deleted it(Keis) after I started having the problem. I got a Nexus 10 though, not a N7.

If you have android 4.3, I recommend going into developer options and selecting revoke USB debugging, then uninstall the Windows drivers in device manager (all while disconnected) then run SDK manager and update all. Then make sure the N10 is in USB debugging, restart your N10 & pc. When they're fully booted plug in the N10 and look on the screen to see if it asks for permission to connect to this pc in USB debugging mode... see what happens. I don't have an N10 but this might work... Then if not, maybe try the steps in the OP
