I have a problem with my phone, s4 ATT. When I call or receive a call the other person on the line can’t hear me very well, if at all. I can put it on speaker and then they can hear me just fine. But if I make a Skype call, they can hear me even when not on speaker. I was wondering what the problem could be, or if anyone could point me in the right direction? I first thought a hardware problem, but now I’m not sure since Skype works just fine without it being on speaker. This started after I rooted and put a custom ROM on my phone. I have since tried several ROMs, restored back to stock, turned on and off noise suppression, checked to make sure no dust was in the mic, nothing seems to work. Thanks for any help on this.

You said you went back to stock, so you ODIN'd the stock ROM and had the same issue?

Odd issue man... Try an ODIN back to stock... Make sure you haven't tripped the flash count first, and if you have use Triangle Away. If you ODIN back to stock, unrooted, etc, and still have the issue, initiate a warranty claim. You may have an AT&T Device Support Center near you, and they swap on the spot. You have to be referred by a Corporate store first.

Hi,
in the last days with my S3 on every call I had which went for more than 1 minute the other person suddenly couldn't hear me anymore. Sometimes it happened after a minute, sometimes after 3 minutes, but in the last 4 calls it happened every time!
Reception came back after some seconds and from then on it was really bad, the other person had hard problems understanding me.
I searched around and found this thread of GNex owners having the same problem:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/472451-vzw-other-person-cant-hear-me.html
Then I found it in the Issues DB too
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24019
Do you guys know more? it is really bad, since this is my business phone so nearly every call is an important one and it really bugs me out.
Anyone having same problems?
I hope someone can help me out.
Yes I have the exact problem. It's driving me nuts and I've tried different roms and kernels.

Have you tried to DISable the noise canceling feature?
No but I will try it and report back.
By the way I'm on stock LF6 4.0.4 in Germany (with o2 as my carrier. Unbranded. )
Is the noise canceletion buggy?

I've read that some kernels cause issues like this.
Also, in UK, in Birmingham on Orange, I have been having issues like this, and it usually occurs when the Signal Switches over from Orange to T-Mobile, mid call, and once onto T-Mobile signal, the call breaks up or goes quiet.
Maybe an issue switching from 2G to 3G or back mid call also?

Will try also. The only reason I haven't got rid of this phone is it mostly happens on o2 calls, I am on giffgaff which is run by o2, The op is o2! Hmmm

just yesterday I again had the issue....and my noice cancelling was off...so this is not causing it....
I'm bumping this in hope someone has a cure.
The new rom LFB is not yet published for Germany but for UK. Perhaps it makes a difference? Can somebody in UK with LFB who previously had the issue please check?
Same problem, no solution
I'm facing the same issue. Tried searching for any possible explanations, but haven't found anything conclusive.
I've tried disabling and enabling noise cancellation and all combinations of the in-call options.
There are 2 or 3 main theories which I've encountered:
1. The microphone goes to sleep when the phone display does. As soon as someone seems to not able to hear me, I move the phone away and the screen wakes up. This seems to sort it out temporarily.
2. Someone had posted on FixYa indicating that they tried putting a small piece of cotton after removing the back panel just behind where the mic is. Haven't tried this!
3. Everyone else seems to think that a factory reset would set it right. I haven't tried this as I need to find a bit of time to do this.
Also, I'm wondering if flashing to CM9's RC1 or 2 will sort out the issue. I'm thinking that it has to be a software glitch. In fact, someone reported that they solved it this way (can't remember where).

Which ROM are you using right now?
Ihad the same issue on CM9 and got rid of it by flashing another radio. I originally had the xxlef, tried the xxlfb and ended up with the xxlf5 which works fine so far.
Try this for a fix
goto settings
sound
Toggle on then off or off then on the screen lock sounds then try again :good:

Hey,
just so you know. I am on CM9 and I have kind of the same issue. Sometimes audio is unidirectional, both ways actually, unable to recreate it so far. What always seems to work is my bluetooth headset. Switiching between the two of them makes me lose audio entirely. I have tried many things, even rebooting the phone Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. I'm guessing it has something to do with BT.
I am NOT facing the issue with losing audio in the middle of the call when the display goes to sleep. The display goes to sleep because of the ligth sensor, btw. - not because the system is idling The display is not needed once the phone realizes it's attached to your ear (lights off).
It's driving me nuts
BUT: CM9 is amazing so far. It's fast, it's open, everything works just fine. Except for the phone as a phone of course

Does CM9 come with an integrated modem switcher? I don't like messing around with "packages" too much. The more you mod everything, the less stuff has got to do with each other and it is more likely to run into trouble, because as a developer you can't really consider every side effect
So if this is actually about the modem (which I doubt, because the connection is just fine, it's just the audio output and input that is kind of broken) - what modem would I use with CM9? Can I just flash a random one over the current one?
Appreciate the advice.
Andreas
I notice that as soon as I take the phone away from my ear and the screen lights up I can again be heard... Wonder if there's a problem with the light off sensor affecting the mics too... It ALWAYS goes away when I remove the phone from my ear and the light sensor allows the backlight to come on again...
Might be a crazy thought but the evidence does seem to support this. I haven't turned off the light sensor in settings yet, if I even can, but was going to try next call...
I updated to BLG8 and I will see tomorrow if it happens again. Today I already had one call which lasted 11 minutes without interruptions. I will report as soon as I got more calls to test.
I had the same prob...
I just reflashed the official firmware frm the service centre.

Ok, so I've been using CM nightlies for a very long time. I've never had any major issues unless many others were reporting the same trouble. So now, I've decided to upgrade to 10.2 since it's been a few days already and there are not major issues reported. I upgraded fine except that I do not get any sound at all when on a phone call. The mic isn't working nor can I hear anything from the headset.
The strange thing is that if I put the phone on speaker, I can hear the conversation and the mic is working. If I switch it back, it stops. I've tried the mic and sound in many other apps and everything seems ok except for when making calls. You can see how this is a big issue. If I revert back to CM 10.1, I don't have any problems. As soon as I go back to 10.2, same issue again.
I don't see anyone else reporting the same issue. Here's what I've done so far to try to fix this. I did a complete wipe, lost everything on the phone. I made sure I had the latest gapps. I tried without wiping coming from 10.1 as well. I did all the fix permission in ROM manager. I don't really know what else to do at this point since nothing seems to be working.
Does anyone else have this issue? I'll try stock 4.3 and see what happens but I wanted to share and get some feedback from here as well.
I have you seen s you. Have you found a solution yet? When I use a bluetooth headset it works Fine
You need to update your radio

Try the app soundabout from the play store. Tell it to send audio to earpiece and under wired headset uncheck everything.

Sorry, but I don't know if this applies to the Samsung S4. I would try posting over in the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 forum.
i purchased the device almost a month ago,
and on this morning people could hear and i was still able to hear them,
but suddenly no i can't hear anyone and they can't hear me.
it's like that both sides press on the mute button.
and i have a friend that his device suddenly can't hear him while he put his device on speaker, but he can still hear the other side.
UP,
Anyone?
It's impossible talk with phone....

If the phone is stock and not rooted and you have not made any modifications on it then I would return it
to where ever you purchased it from and get it exchanged.
If the phone is rooted and it has a custom rom then I suggest to odin flash the stock Samsung 9505 rom
and that should solve the problem.
Good luck!

As suggested, if you are stock then you probably want to go to Samsung support.
But if you have rooted and installed custom kernel then it could be that.
I had that similar issue, sound disappeared sometimes but came back if I shutdown (not restart) my phone for 10 sec and start again.
If you have similar issue then it's caused by custom kernel. Might want to switch to another kernel or stock one.
Apparently this happens if you flash a newer firmware without the new baseband.
If this is the case you should flash a full firmware (read up on the Knox stuff first though)

Alright, I am currently on an sgh-i337 Galaxy S4. I'm updated to MK2 and have been trying to fix the problem I've been having for a week or two now and figured I could get some help from some real geniuses.
My problem is that when making a call or receiving a call, there is no audio transacted between my caller and I (they can't hear me and I can't hear them). After digging around on the Internet a little, I found several tips: factory restore, update from mf3 to mk2, wipe the cache and data on the phone application, use applications such as soundabout, clean out the mic with a needle, trying different ROMS. I have tried ALL these options and have yet to figure out a solution.
Some info- I know my microphone is working fine because I will record myself and play it back with crystal quality, Text to speech works flawlessly, and S-Voice works as well. My speakers work fine too. I can play music and the internal (ear) speaker works as well. I have data on the phone and can send and receive text messages perfectly. HERE IS THE KICKER: When connected to my bluetooth headset, the call works perfectly! This leads me to believe it is a software issue but I am puzzled as to why a factory reset (even a fresh mk2 Odin flash) won't work. I have tried downloading different dialer applications and dialing a call from android terminal emulator. Still, no dice.
Thanks for any and all help!
hi there,
sounds like a modem issue.. although the fact that it works with bluetooth makes me think otherwise. did you donan official update or is it a custom Rom? at one point I update to 442 (NC1) but still had the 422 basedband (MG1). I was getting signal drops all the time so I went back the 422, flashed the modem only using odin, then updated to 442 again and no more signal drops!
good luck!

So you think I should download the new kit kat modems and give them a flash? This is what I thought as well. I feel like there is just an internal software switch that is causing mute and hold to be constantly activated unless a bluetooth device is connected. I'll certainly do your suggestion and get back with you. Thank you

I apologize it took me so long to get back with you, I had to flash full NB1, and zip the modems up, then downgrade, then flash. I couldn't find any individual tar files for NB1 4.4.2.
Thanks for the suggestion French but I'm afraid that's another idea we can add the list of busts. I first flashed the NB1 modems and then tried making a call. Everything was going normal but the call audio from either person has yet to budge. After that frustration I decided to wipe everything, update to NB1, reset the flash counter, and take it to best buy and the AT&T store for some more ideas. The guy at Best Buy was a total dweeb and said they didn't offer a service for flashing phone devices. How lame. I went to the AT&T store and the guy of course, didn't try to help me resolve the problem but just get a new phone.
So, I'm scraping bottom for ideas fellas. I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thank you all

I didn't resolve the problem and I'm still open to any and all suggestions. Getting a new phone is rarely the answer and in a case like this where the hardware works perfect on a Skype call, etc.. I really appreciate your help and if you got any more ideas, throw them at me!
This is very frustrating.
I use my phone for calls between 3-5 hours a day. I've been having this issue where I'll be on a call and after some time (ranges between 2-10 minutes) I can continue to hear people but they can't hear me. I use the Samsung headphones with a built in mic to talk. I'll notice that they can't hear me, I'll unplug the headphones and they still can't hear me. I hit speaker phone and still can't be heard. I end up hanging up and calling back. This happens about 30% of the calls I'm on. I also bought other Samsung headphones and the problem persists. It's also not always with my headset. I've had this muting issue happen while talking directly on the phone.
Here is the kicker. I'm on my 3rd s6 edge+ and I've had the problem with all 3!! My first phone the microphone by the speaker stopped working. My second one started having the same issue with the mic. But all three had the same exacting muting issue.
Anyone else in the same boat? Any suggestions on fixing this?
Thanks

Doh. I dont know which firmware/rom/kernel you're running but maybe you should wipe cache/dalvik or clean re-flash.. If already rooted, give a try a custom kernel. Hope you solve it. Thanks.
I have the exact same issue, except my call quality is poor and calls drop a lot as well. Im on my 3rd phone as well. All the issues have followed me on the phone. T mobile told me that I would have to wait for the marshmallow update since its a known issue with the phone and it should correct it. I told them it wasnt a good answer so they are sending me a new sim card to try out and see if that helps. Personally I hope it doesnt so I can get a new device

Ugh. It's going to take forever for Marshmallow to come out. First Samsung needs to rip it apart, then AT&T before it gets to me.
Let me know how the SIM change works for you. That's one thing I've yet to try.

Umm. I see thats AT&T, isnt it? If so, you have got locked bootloader etc, I dont have proper info about it sorry. I prefer you to try something like wipe cache/dalvik etc but it may bricks your phone. So you better ask that in AT&T Forum Good luck.
Edit: I saw your post after posted mine lol. I've simfree g928C btw.
