Just noticed this on the tab. Pretty cool stuff
Can't find wifi printer on network
Apparently it only works with certain Samsung printers, but there's very little information about this.
Regards,
Dave
Yes. From page 49 of the user's manual:
Print. Your device is compatible only with Samsung printers.

I have a Lexmark S405 and a SGsII but lexmark are only supporting apple with the Lexprint app
does anyone know how to remote print from the GSII i have looked at various other print share apps but none can actually print despite the app reporting connecting and sending

I have used Google Cloud Print. Once I got it set up, it has worked fine.

There is an app for HP printers too. If someone needs it, I can post it. Stupid HP updated the app to support their web printers and deprecated the wifi ones.

Printer Share from the Market works great for me. The first 20 pages are free, so there's nothing to lose.
Cloud print can be used with any printer that's airprint/eprint ready and can be set up with practically any printer as long as the printers connected to a computer with chrome installed
Sent from my rooted Nexus1
PrintBot from the market also seems to work OK for me (HP Wireless F4500)
Sends direct to the printer via WiFi, no need for computer to be on. (Need to be on the same WiFi network of course)
Limited number of prints/month on free version.
Havn't fully tried it yet but it found printer and sent a test page OK

I'm new to smart phones. The Atrix is my first one. I apologize for asking what may be a very trivial question, but I simply don't know much about apps and services and costs associated with them.
I'm interested in GPS navigation services that I can use with my phone. There is a default app on the Atrix called AT&T Navigation. Is this linked to the AT&T navigation service that costs $9.99 per month?
I don't want to spend a lot of money on a subscription because I don't need driving directions very often. Are there any navigation services that do not require a monthly subscription? Free would be ideal. A low cost per use might do. A monthly subscription service doesn't fit my needs.
Google maps
Just use the navigation app on there or the maps app

well, i personally cant get the navigation app to lock on and work for the freaking life of me. not sure what the prolem is, it just stays loading forever, showing something like "accessing navigation services" or something similar.
my GPS test app does show me locking onto satelites and being accurate within about 16 or 17 feet though

Mine did that at first, then after reloading the app or rebooting, it worked. Not sure what it was looking for.

Are u using it with the wifi on or off. I use mine without the wife and im get locks quickly down to 2 meters. you could try that.
I used the Maps and got a lock within seconds and its showing location of where i'm at down to within 1 foot.

Make sure you have the latest version of Maps (5.1 IIRC) from the market. I had the exact same issue but updating Maps fixed it.

The first hint of an answer I can understand. From the above statement, I infer that Maps is an application that one can obtain from the market. I assume the Market icon that appears on my phone is what is referred to.
When I click on the Market icon, it directs me to create a Google account. Bummer. I'm not all that interested in creating multiple new accounts to use this phone (motoblur, google, what next?)

I am not sure why you're bothered by the need to create a Google account to fully utilize this phone. What's wrong with having a one-stop-shop for all your contacts, calendars, messages, app purchases? Having this account simplifies your life beyond what a PC can do for you since everything is stored in the "cloud", and should you choose to change your device once you'll log in to your new phone all that data will follow you automatically eliminating the need to ever connect your phone to a computer. Anyways, if you want to download apps from the Market you'll need a Google account, plain and simple.
What bothers me the most is the need for yet another account, payment method, and email address to keep track of. I already manage around two dozen personal email accounts and I have several ways to pay for services online. The more email addresses one has, the more spam one must deal with. The more payment methods one has, the more fraud risk one is exposed to.
Besides that, I don't want any contacts associated with an account I use for payments. It appears that I'll have to set up a google account so I can use the Android Market. I hope I can avoid having it disclosed to anyone else.
Do you not have a Gmail account that you use for email?
I do not currently have a Gmail account. But it appears I'm going to end up with one.
Yeah, but thats with any smartphone. You would need an account for the Apple App Store, Blackberry App World, etc. Nothing to be bummed about though

What are the recommended apps to disable and/or get rid of? I did a factory reset because of nasty wake locks and trying to figure everything that can be disabled without losing features or anything. I know some of this is subjective, but still like some ideas. Thanks.

Until I can completely remove some bloat, I have the following turned off so far. It's by no means a thorough list.
Accessories
Audible
BlurbCheckout
Calculator (installed 3rd party Calculator)
Caller Name ID
Cloud
FamilyBase Companion
Google Play Books
HP Print Service Plugin
Message+ (Didn't even bother to figer out what this is before I killed it)
Messages (installed Hangouts and/or 3rd party messagin app)
My InfoZone
NFL Mobile
Smart Remote (downloaded the latest WatchOn app from Samsung)
Swype
Verizon Location Agent
Verizon Support and Protection
Verizon Tones
VZ Navigator
As far as the text-to-speech deletion goes, just uninstall whichever ones you don't anticipate needing.
Settings>Language and Input>text-to-speech options>Listen to an example. Really it's personal preference, and uninstalling unused tts voice data only serves to free up internal storage. For example, the "high quality" female English US voice for Google TTS is 244MB, The Samsung high quality voice data is around 90MB per language/gender.

Samsung has launched s5 devices with less permissions do to whatever you want! So maybe you have to root your device (which is not possible right now bcoz it will cut your warranty out) So another solution for it is try to search for an app on play store which disables system applications! Without root
I've turned off the following:
Accessories
Audible
Blurb Checkout
Caller Name ID
Family Base Companion
Flipboard
Google Play Books
Google Play Newsstand
IMDb
Isis Mobile Wallet
My InfoZone
My Magazine
NFL Mobile
Samsung Link Platform
Slacker
Smart Remote
VZ Navigator
This is my complete list... everything still works (except the Samsung bloat crap like S-voice and the verizon garbage pre-loaded). I did turn off some Google apps that were needless, and the Samsung fitness stuff (e.g. ANT+ connection, fitness, etc.), in addition to other things (S-pen, fonts, etc.)

I believe samsung billing is for app purchases through their proprietary app store
Samsung Link is a protocol for connecting only with samsung TV's/laptops - has functionality for screen-mirroring, DLNA only with samsung branded devices.
Samsung Galaxy... I'm not entirely sure what it does to be honest. I've tested fairly extensively if any functionality / apps / services are broken as a result, and everything still seems to work fine. I have a suspicion that this is related to a tutorial/demo function.

Downloads app is just an app that shows a history/list of everything you've recently downloaded (e.g. in the downloads folder). I prefer to use ESFileExplorer as it's more versatile as a file manager, and I don't care for an app that tracks file downloads/history.
In previous android versions, I believe the Media app was part of what cached/listed files such as images (thumbnails), music files, docs, etc. I vaguely recall disabling it in the past to find that all my MP3's and photos no longer appeared in the gallery/google music app. I would not disable it if my memory serves me correctly.
Yeah, your battery usage looks about in-par with mine. I came from a GNex and was used to seeing display always overtaking androidOS/systemUI (man, that phone had atrocious battery life and screen-on time)... the GS5 has such a great power-sipping display that I came to the same surprise as you to find it ranks on-par/sometimes below OS usage in a normal day. The battery life on this phone rocks.
EDIT: Media usage will sometimes spike if you've recently added a bunch of new files (photos, mp3's, etc.) to your device, as it's scanning/caching/indexing lists to the files. I'd give it a day or two if that's the case, and you'll see it won't consume much of anything once things are static on your phone.

Oh OK. I see. So perfectly safe to disable downloads. What about the media app itself? Do you have it disabled? That screen shot with the high media usage, I'm not sure we have it was so high. It's first time it has been like that and I haven't added any more music. Another question.
Do You Know What The Chrome sandbox is? And does your keyboard ever do that thing with the capital letters?

I don't have the media app disabled and wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't disable chrome sandbox ( though I'm not sure of its function, its installed alongside the app so it may be a plugin for other apps).
Not sure what keyboard caps problem you're referring to. I use only the android keyboard (not Samsung nor Swype).
I need to disable the wifi on my teenage son's Samsung Note 3. He's not mature enough for all that the internet has to offer (xxx). I have blocked his data usage through AT&T, but they have no control over the wifi. I have searched the internet and couldn't find anything relevant. How can I keep the phone fully functional yet disable the phone's ability to access the internet so that he can't go in and enable it himself?
I need him to have a phone and I don't want to go buy a dumb phone if I don't have to. I'm sure I'm not the only parent that has this same issue.
Is there a password protected app I can install or a ROM? Any ideas?
Thanks
Just lock your wifi with a password and don't tell him that password.

I have done that at home. He was taking his phone to Starbucks and using their free open wifi.
I may have found my own answer in the Google Play Store. There are a variety of Parental Control apps that apply content filtering and website logging.
Otherwise use hosts filter like ad-free and add list of xxxx site

How about blocking an app from accessing the internet, is that good enough?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.droidwall.free
Set it so that Chrome, Browser and Play Store cannot access the web. Then lock DroidWall using Smart App Lock or even hide it from the launcher.
Your kid can still connect to the internet, but that's just the beginning. He THINKS he's on the internet, but his apps doesn't get any permission to access the internet, so all network requests are denied.
Thanks for your input. My overall goal is to prevent my son from using his phone to access porn. My default thought was to disable the wifi since I already have his phone data blocked. It never occured to me until yesterday after my initial post here that there are parental control apps that have content filtering and website logging. A lot of them have great features, but I couldn't find one that had all of the great features combined. I think the one that comes the closest is Funamo Parental Control.

My Fitbit One is dying because it's getting old, so I'm going to be replacing it with a Smart Watch of some sort. I'm looking for a watch that will track my steps and hopefully my sleep and integrate with MyFitnessPal account.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experiences with this? I'm not sure if there are watches that are better than others at this or if they generally don't work at all. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Motobody is supposed to sync with fitbit, but I have yet to see it work. I jump through all these hoops so I can sync with my work's vitality program.

How about the Huawei active?

I just stumbled upon this rather convoluted solution myself. My company also has a Vitality program and after numerous issues with FitBit I want to use an actual smartwatch to log steps. After playing around with the various app connections I did the same Google Fit -> MyFitnessPal -> MapMyFitness -> Vitality. I just need to buy a smartwatch now to complete the chain, but I want to make sure it works before purchasing one.
Thanks.
