Flashing Roms - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've flashed roms before on my phone and it was all fine and dandy. I recently though went back to stock, removed root. Then I downloaded Chainfire SU today out of boredom, rooted, installed TWRP and tried installing GE roms on my M919V. No matter which one I flash, I'm stuck on the Galaxy S4 screen which is annoying. Is there anyway to fix this?

Did you also install a kernel specific to your device?

i9505 - jflte - Installation aborted

Sup,
got a S4 from a mate to root. Already rooted my own S3, so I know what to do.
I flashed the newest CF Auto Root from chainfire via Odin
flashed the newest CWM via Odin too
then went into the recovery
Wiped everything (data, factory reset, dalvik and even system)
But as soon as I want to install a custom rom, it tells me "installation aborted".
Tried different roms, but none has worked.
Also tried Philz Touch 6 and TWRP but still getting the same problem.
Why does the recovery say that there's no root access if I want to shut down the device?
"Root access is missing. Root device now?"
This appears everytime I shut down from recovery. Could this be the problem?
I appreciate every kind of help
E3: uh.. After a few hours I finally got the solution.
- I installed this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250824) (Stockrom)
- Flashed root again
- Flashed CWM again
- and finally I am able to install a custom rom !
I was going to say reflash root. But I see you did it yourself. Nice thinking

Cant figure out how to install custom rom, without loosing root acces

Dear XDA
I have been an android user for many years and rooting has been one of the things I always did to my devices. I am an owner of a Note 3, which I have rooted succesfully and used X-NOTE 13 rom for long time. Last week I wanted to try something new and after that everything seems to be impossible. Before I install any roms I always perfom full wipe of, system, data, cache, dalvik cache etc. (I do it inside the recovery). Afterwards I tried to install CRASH ROM V9 and the progress went fine. When the phone rebooted the strange things started to happened I couldn't find the rom's extra menu and couldnt find any of the functions that the rom contained. I just thought that it was problem with the rom itself therefore I tried to went back to X-NOTE, but without any luck. The X-NOTE installed probably but I couldnt boot into it, it was stucked at the "Samsung Note 3" logo. I tried to wipe cache and dalvik but without any luck and every time I rebooted from the recovery the recovery says "it seems your device doesnt have root access" and the recovery tries to gain root access.
Then I couldnt understand anything of what was happening so I went to stock using ODIN. After installing stock rom I used CF-ROOT and everythings went smooth and I could use SuperSU inside the stock rom. Then I installed a recovery and it didn't mentioned anything about root access, so I was ready to install my custom rom...at least I thought so....I installed X-NOTE again (because I knew that this rom worked before without any problems) and after the progress was done I couldnt boot into the rom again, it was stucked. I wiped the cache and dalvik and as soon I clicked reboot in recovery it tells me that I am not rooted.
Then I did the same thing again, went back to stock, installed CF-ROOT and recovery. This time I installed CRASH ROM instead and I could boot into the system, but the rom still misses the "rooted features" etc.
In other words, what have I done wrong? I cant seem to find the problem and I think that I have tried every possible solution?
Informations:
Model: SM-N9005
STOCK ROM: Tried both N9005XXUENB4 (German) and N9005XXUENC2 (Nordic firmware)
Custom Rom: Tried both X-NOTE and CRASH ROM
Recoveries used: TWRP, CWM and Philz CWM
Kernels: Tried with stock one and X-NOTE kernel 1.5
I hope you can help me I cant live with stock roms
Thanks in advance

weird.
all the rom you mentioned xnote & crash come with root access inside.
When you said you used all those 3 recoveries, did you try each rom with each recovery ?
and when you flash those rom, did you follow to do a clean full wipe as mentioned on each OP thread ?
clean full wipe is not only wipe cache and dalvik, but also the data (factory reset).

Yes I have and tried several other combinations too. First time I installed X-NOTE I wiped everything and installed X-NOTE without problems.
I cant seem to break the code, I am getting frustrated hour by hour. I have double checked everything, I am on the NC2 bootloader with the NC2 kernel, when trying to install X-NOTE I get stuck at "Samsung Glaxy Note 3" - I cant understand what the problem may be and it is beginning to be personal :/ heheh
But seriously what could I have done wrong?

To be frank... I have no idea. U flash before earlier, means u know how to flash it.
What I could think of, is just the recovery.
I ve been using cwm chenglu all this time (the one reported with less bugs, and most recommended at any rom thread). And jump from rom to rom every 1 week at least with no issue.
I will try tonite use twrp to flash rom. I will let u know if I face any problem.
SOLVED

Finally, finally and finally solved!
Well it seems strange but the problem was the official kernel inside the stock roms that made it almost impossible to run any custom rom.
What I did to solve the problem:
1. Went back to stock rom using a rom with the newest baseband NC2, ex. N9005XXUENC2
1a. I did have som problems getting the bootloader updated, which means I was force to install it over ODIN 3.09 - use this bootloader NC2 BOOTLOADER (Thanks soloilmeglio for the bootloader)
2. I used CF-ROOT to gain root access
3. Then I installed CWM 6.0.4.8 recovery as recommended from antique_sonic (Updated few hours ago!)
4. Install the CivZ-SnapKat-Rev3.1-sm_n9005-4.4.2.zip kernel
5. Lets the phone reboot and check that everything works!
7: Boot into recovery and wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache
8. Install the custom rom
Dont ask me why the kernel wasn't working from beginning and why it was "corrupted" after installing another custom rom - but now everything works as it should!
Thank you very much antique_sonic for helping me!

Good then to know ur phone is okay.
I fully wipe with twrp last nite. And flash xnote. Hang at boot after done.
Fully wipe again, and flash assassins. A lot fc here and there.
I flash back cwm chenglu, full wipe, and flash back xnote. Now it runs nicely.
My phone not suit with twrp.

It could probably be a problem with TWRP as you mentioned earlier. After using CWM everything went smooth after updating my kernel. Last night I couldnt hold me back to try one more time, and I flashed X-NOTE with TWRP and I got the same problem as described in #1 post. Then I installed CWM and flashed X-NOTE again and everything got messed up. Then I restored everything, force installed the kernel and bootlaoder. After that installed CWM and then I was able to run X-NOTE without any problem.
I am not a professional developer but I may think that the problem is TWRP when it tries to flash the kernel under the process with may results in some problems. When using CWM from the beginning I do not get any problems but when using TWRP I need to restore everything back.

[Q] Cannot re root after 4.4.3 upgrade

Hi,
I previously had purity rom on my nexus 10. I decided to back to stock and use the xposed framework. So with 4.4.3 I flashed the stock images (manualy so it didn't wipe my sdcard partition), wiped data, cache and dalvick.
Stock 4.4.3 works fine, no issues here, but in acquiring root by flashing supersu update (both 93 and 99r3) root doesn't seem to stick. I can adb in and su from terminal, but when booting android supersu days it couldn't acquire root. I have tried other clockworkmod recovery and team win recovery so see if it was a bug with recovery, but no dice. Clockwork did occasionally say it lost root and press Yes to put it back, it did this on my nexus 5 and I still kept root.
I have even tried the universal nexus toolkit but that didn't work either. All methods I have tried have run the zip output fine, saying success.
Any ideas what's wrong. I assume I have done something wrong but can't find much information about root not working like this.
Did you try chainfire 2.00?

Hi,
Some time ago I've faced the same issue as you, what worked for me was using an older supersu flashable zip and after flashing it I flashed the latest. Don't know if it was placebo or something, but always worked for me .
~Lord
I did the exact same couple days ago after running Omnirom. I used this odex stock image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529492
After the initial factory wipe I wiped dalvik, cache, data, and flashed SU after flashing the ROM but before reboot. Using latest TWRP. Hope this helps.

Having some issues getting a recovery to be flashed on this new device, I am not use to a phone that when rooted doesn't have some stock recovery that actually works. And by that I mean, allows me to install zip from file. All I get is the option to reboot, flash from adb, install from external, wipe factory reset, wipe cache, and install from cache.
Sorry if this has been asked a few times before, but with my searching I didn't find any one answer that solved my problem. Tried flashing a recovery via odin but it said Auth fail for the recovery. Going to try a few other things and see what I can come up with.
Thanks in advanced!
What recovery are you trying to flash? I believe the closet thing we have to a custom recovery is safestrap. Is that what your trying to install?

It sounds like you flashed philz touch recovery witch will not work with the VZW S5 you need to flash SafeStrap Recovery. You might need to Odin back to stock and re root your device to get it back to normal first.

I didn't flash anything when I first started rooting the phone I just used towelroot, then when the OTA messed it up I went and did the NCG to NE9 method using odin and towelroot. But every time I went into recovery, it has been the same. It wasn't until I used the toolkit from the forums that installed safestrap and busybox did I actually get a different recovery, but even if I reboot into recovery it still takes me to the stock one first and then on reboot i can access safestrap.
Yes, that's how safestrap works, through a process called "bootstrapping". It never replaces your stock recovery so when you boot into recovery it'll always be stock but upon boot you'll be presented with the safestrap option.....totally normal
On another note, my Supersu binaries wont update so I'm going back to stock anyway. I think I may leave it at stock for a while until I see some more ROMs come out.

Your other option is what I have done. I first went the safestrap route but installed rom on rom slot before finding out about the bugz in safestrap. So I odined back to stock. Instead of installing something with bugz in it I rooted, installed supersu and Xposed framework with some modules. Wanam module gives you most of the customizations found in custom roms. Tons of other modules for pretty much anything you want to tweak. Works like a champ on stock system.

Nexus 4 Stuck at starting app when not on Stock

Short Story: My phone works fine when its stock 4.4.4 , no root. If i root it and flash a custom recovery using WUG it gets stuck on starting ups.
Long Story: I was running the latest version of PA, rebooted my phone because of a franco kernel update, and it got stuck on the bootscreen. Tried everything, couldnt get it to boot, so I finally flashed stock using WUG, it worked. I then rooted and flashed custom recovery, and it got stuck on starting apps. Flashed stock again and it worked, repeated the root, and it got stuck on starting apps.
Anybody know whats going on?

You should do a CLEAN install, wipe dalvik / cache / System and Data, the last two ones are very important to wipe, otherwise you got stuck on boot.
It is best to flash your rom using recovery and forget the toolkit, just upload your rom on your N4, get to recovery => install => choose the rom, that's it.

I did all that before, and it still didn't work.
I think your problems are related to flashing the recovery, did you try to revert back the the old one ?
