Partitions in wm?

Hello everybody,
Does wm support partitions?
So can I split up my 8 gb sd card into two partitions of 4?
Or does wm not support this?

Hope you don't mind me asking, but what for ?

E.g.
Partition one:
Haret > Android
Partition two:
Multimedia stuff + wm
or
Partiton one:
Multimedia
Partition 2
Program files and stuff

There is no need as both Andriod and WM6.x can see Fat/Fat32, which I presume your SD card is formatted.
If you want to separate your media from any programs you want to install on the sd card just use a different folder.
Plugging your SD card into you TP2 is the same as plugging it into your desktop / laptop whatever the OS.
Would you partition a SD card that was plugged into your desktop ?

If you want to partition the SD, try it and let us know... however i think that it will appear as 2 storage cards in explorer.

I also searched around on the internet and it works
But I am back at one sd card since I find folders easier than 2 storage cards.

I know exactly where you're comin' from, man. After I get a 16GB class 6 microSDHC, I intend to partition ~8.5GB as NTFS ('cause I'd like the the max capacity to hold a full DVD DL disk) to handle larger file transfers btwn desk/laptops. And, I'd still have a whoppin' ~7.5GB to be used by the tele as FAT32...'just haven't made that microSDHC purchase yet, but I'd imagine it to be plausible.

I remember some time ago on Aximsite or another older related site reading how to format NTFS and use a Compact Flash card on Windows Mobile. I did it on my Axim and Ipaq at the time, and kind of remember it working.

I know. However, if there're two partitions, NTFS @ ~8.5GB and FAT32 @ ~7.5GB, then I'd imagine that Windows would see the storage card as two drives, while Windows Mobile would see the 16GB, storage card as ~7.5GB. Anyone, please, do correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption.

This has made me wonder, too. Why does WM refer to "Storage Card 1" occasionally when inserting/unplugging memory cards...? It kinda implies that there is room for multiple cards at the same time...????

i partitioned my 16 gig hard drive and installed linksys on one partition so i can plug into my computer and dual boot from my phone...
i dont really see a reason to create multiple partitions to have the same function as folders (ie seperating media from doc, ext...)

You would not gain anything by formatting NTFS other than the ability to set NTFS permissions in Windows. A movie can be stored on a FAT/FAT32 partition with no ill affect on usability. Also, when you purchase any type of storage, the actual formatted size is usually smaller than the advertised size. So if you buy a 16GB card, you will most likely end up with around 15GB max of usable space. I would not plan on having 7.5GB of free space after creating a 8.5GB partition.

No, you'd also be able to support files larger than 2GB. And, I know it wouldn't be 7.5GB, that's why I'd said about (~). Prob more like 6.8GB, or so.

I know NTFS doesn't work on Windows Mobile. However, I would assume that if you were to make two partitions, one NTFS, and the other FAT32, the Windows Mobile device would show the FAT32 partition, while a Windows dsktp would show the microSDHC as two partitions, NTFS and FAT32. I've ordered a 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and I'll post my results after I receive, partition and format the card.

Okay. So've received my 16GB microSDHC Class 6, and have partitioned and formatted with Paragon Partition Manager Pro v9.0, and have...
Partition 1 - microSDHC N, 8.61GB NTFS
Partition 2 - microSDHC, 6.24GB FAT32
The device sees the FAT32 partition, as intended. Windows (Vista), however, shows only the 1st partition (NTFS) of the microSD, even when using the device in Disk Drive USB mode. Disk Management sees the FAT32 partition, but no matter what options I select, I'm met with
Code:
An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error...
At this point, I just need Windows to allow me to give the partition a drive letter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

in the start search bar type computer managment then go to storage/disk management select the disk and then right click and change letter.
thats supposed to let you change the letter i have to deal with this alot at work with all the network drives and my externals

I'd tried this believing that Windows only needed to assign a drive letter, but to no avail. :\

64GB MicroSD Card - The how-to guide!

As you all hopefully know, the Note Can take up to 64GB MicroSDXC cards. But, what you may not know is the trouble that with comes with getting one to work. Its actually relatively simple When you know how to do it. l spent hours tonight trying to do it.
Originally the sd will probably be in the NTFS format created by Microsoft, which is understandable since its the biggest OS on computers.
Upon entering your SD onto the device, you should see that it wants you to format it. This is due to android not supporting NTFS. The only structure it supports is FAT32.
But, here's where your options come in! You have the choice of either making your device NTFS compatible (Note that this requires root), or reform making the storage device to FAT32. As my device is not yet rooted to test the NTFS support, l will only go over the reformatting process. Unfortunately, since I'm a new member I can't post links. Therefore, you'll need to trust google to guide you to what you want. But if you want to use the tool I used just Google "Kioskea HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any damage that you Cause to your device, computer or SD card while carrying out this method. It is your own decision to do this. This method should cause no harm to any system health, but, as with anything on a computer, errors can occur. Also, take note that the more you format something, the shorter its life will be.
Insert your SD card into the computer to format it. To format to FAT32, you will need to download a third party partition program, as windows withdrew the ability to format to FAT32 in an attempt to push more people on to NTFS. Only storage mediums with FAT32 as their default can format to it.
Once you've downloaded and installed the software, load it up and select your sd card and FAT32, as well as quick format then start. You should then insert it into your PHONE as the tablet doesn't seem to do this next step correctly. When inserted into your phone, it should say that the sd needs formatted. Do this then eject it and transfer it to your tablet and say yes to the dialogue that appears. And that's it in a nutshell! This can be applied for every android device possible.

Yes, i can confirm that if you update to the pulled ota update firmware, your tablet can format the 64gb sdxc to exFat and be read.

I am using sandisk 64G sdxc card in my N8000 (Hong Kong version N8000ZSALI1 firmware) which natively supports exFAT format. It is fine so far. But I do not dare to copy large file from USB cable via Kies. I take out the card and put into SDXC card reader for large files copying.

@Tubgirl my one came formatted with NTFS, rather than exFAT. So, I had assumed the rest were like this. It's strange that mine exFAT. :s

@Itchiee I'd seen reports of updates being able to support 64GB cards but that's all I was able to find. I only just got my Note 10.1 and it says on both the internal update and update via Kies that my tablet is up to date. Although, I am from the UK that may be why. I assumed my tablet was rolled out with the latest update. I tried exFAT on my tablet and it refused to work and was throwing the same error's at me.

@vndnguyen I recommended the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" as compared to the standard Windows one as Microsoft pulled formatting support for anything except exFAT and NTFS. The only time Microsoft will let you format to FAT32 is if it was the native of that device, such as a flash drive. So, the difference between the two programs, is that the "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool" can format to FAT32, as where Windows cannot.

I have just ordered a 64 gb sandisk android sdxc card, if i am not to bothered about transfering large files, is there much difference between using exfat and fat32?

I don't have 64G sd card. I have 8GB sd card and I can format it as FAT32 on my Windows 7 PC

This is because the native format of 32GB MicroSD cards and below were FAT32. Like I said, if the device is native FAT32, then Windows will allow a format of that.

Sorry for not replying in my last post. I never seen your comment. There's some slight differences between FAT32 and exFAT. The main difference a common user should know is that FAT32 can only hold, and transfer a maximum of 4GB, as where exFAT does not have a size limit. That's why it's the "preferred" method. But, FAT32 is more popular as it's been around longer and is supported by more platforms than exFAT. If you want to know more about the differences, try a google search. Unfortunately I can't post links just yet to help you out with that. But, I'd recommend trying the exFAT wiki page. The stuff you'll find can get fairly technical. Just a heads up.

This is the one I got and I had to format on my Defy first. Then my tablet excepted it, for now I can only put movies, photos on. Any apps you want on doesn't work as of yet which was a big let down for me.

This appears to be the same one that I ordered. Mine came as NTFS but it may have just been a hiccup for mine as everyone else is apparently exFAT. One thing I also noticed is that the page says it is both class six and class 10. Just to clarify - It is class 10.

Jayjay, there are apps that that allow you to do this. I would recommend trying App2SD, Link2SD and Directory Bind. DB can be found by searching the xda forums.

Yes but you need to be rooted and im not, I did try them though but wouldn't work, wouldn't let me move to SD...:good:

Yeah some require root. I tried some today, as well. They don't work due to the memory config. Seems to be happen to all new releases, as if they're trying to block stuff like that. With all the trouble Google and manufacturers are going to to stop us rooting and stuff like that, Android will soon be as non-combustible as iOS!

i bought my note 10.1 and a microsd sandisc 64gb. it was exfat by default.but my note did not recognise that.so i take it of,i put it in my laptop and i reform it to exfat also.but again nothing.my note is not recognising it.does anyone have any idea why is that?and what can i do to make it work?

This is because Samsung claim that their Note 10.1 can support exFAT. In reality, the support for it doesn't work at the moment. What you will need to do is reformat it to FAT32, and it should work. If it still doesn't work after this, put the SD into your mobile phone then use the reformat option on the phone. The reformatting does not work on the Note 10.1, so you can't reformat it on that.
Let me know how it goes.

How to format 64gb micro sd card to Fat32 to work on SGS3

I faced a problem with my 64gb. Sandisk micro SD and I solved the issue and I thought about posting the solution here that might help some of you.
so... the issue I faced is how to get TWRP recovery or CWM to mount my Ex sd card.
basically the problem is that the card is formatted in exfat or NTFS and in both ways it won't be recognized by TWRP and the only way to formate it in fat32 is by only one software because windows can not format more than 32gb in Fat32.
and here is how:
first: download EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition from this link http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html?tag=mncol%3bpop&cdlPid=10982635
Second : Now you can see a list of all of your hard drives. Note the one highlighted in blue on the grid. This is my 64GB MicroSDXC card in my USB Card Reader. Obviously the location of your card in the list may differ dependant on the number of drives in your computer
You’ll need to right-click on the drive in the list representing your 64GB MicroSDXC card and click “Format partition”
Third : You need to select FAT32 for the File System, and 32KB for Cluster Size.
EaseUS doesn’t immediately apply the changes you specify. Instead, it queues them up so that you can review and revise them before you commit to having the program affect those changes. then we need to press the Apply button.
that's it ... now you can enjoy your 64gb MicroSd and you can mount it in TWRP or CWM recovery .

I've tried this method, my card became 32GB
Then I put it into my Galaxy Note, it saw it also as 32GB, then I formatted the card with Gnote, then it became 64GB again
I was planning to create two partitions with minitools formatting tool, one was supoosed to be 16 GB FAT32 and the remaning part would be 48GB NTFS, and I was planning to use, Paragon NTFS to mount that NTFS partition on GNOTE.
But because after formatting on PC it became 32 GB I couldn't do that.
Any suggestions ?

thanks so much for this. I just bought a new 64 gb card for my phone and it "corrupted" on me twice. I plugged it in to my comp and it was exFat. Followed the directions here and formatted to fat32. Now I have to copy my files again. I hope this works. Oh and according to my phone, there is no update 4.1.2 for it. I am on 4.0.4 and it cannot find any updates so that doesnt really work for me.

I had been trying to do thiis for 4 hours when i saw ur post! Thanks sooo much..at first i got an error while formatting, but then i quit all other applications as recommended by the software and it woeked perfectly on my HTC Sensation. Thank You Soooo much:laugh::good:

I was looking to format my card to Fat32 so I can use a Paranoid Android Rom. What happens when I want to flash another ROM and the new ROM is a Tochwiz Rom... Will I need to unformat the card or reverse it someway? I'm a newbie to this stuff.

No. Touchwizz roms and aokp/cm10 roms can both read fat32 sd cards. Because exfat is licenced from Microsoft AOKP can't incorporate the drivers needed to get exfat formatted card to work.
Short story is both roms can read/write to fat32 formatted sd cards. Only Touchwizz roms can read/write to exfat formatted cards. Unless you copy a lot of single files over 4GB in size stick with fat32 formatting.

I tried what you suggested. However, the partition stayed at 32 GB only instead of 64 GB. Any more suggestions.

I also have the same problem, my 64 GB card has become 32 GB one. I used the suggested program to partition but still 32 GB. Can you explain what is Gnote and how to use it. Thanks

Did you ever find out how to revert back to 64 GB. I am exactly in a similar situation with a 64 GB converted to 32 GB and do not know what to do?

You can still use your card normally. I've done the inverse way (Touchwiz to AOKP) and works too.
The point is: Touchwiz based ROMs have support to FAT32 and exFAT. AOKP ones have support only to FAT32.

That's another point OP have forgotten. Your card reader must support microSDXC cards. Most readers support only microSDHC and these are maximum 32Gb storage. microSDXC has elevated this limit to 2TB. I had to buy myself a new card reader due to that incompatibility.
There's a fragment in Wikipedia which explains this situation:
SDXC cards are pre-formatted with Microsoft's proprietary and patented exFAT file system, which the host device might not support. Since Microsoft does not publish the specifications of exFAT and its use requires a non-free license, many alternative or older operating systems do not support exFAT for technical or legal reasons. The use of exFAT on some SDXC cards may render SDXC unsuitable as a universal exchange medium, as an SDXC card that uses exFAT would not be usable in all host devices. Since the FAT32 file system supports volumes up to the SDXC's maximum theoretical capacity of 2 TB as well, a user could reformat an SDXC card to use FAT32 for greater portability between computers (see below). FAT32-formatted SDXC cards can be used in a host device built for SDHC if the host device can handle 64 GB and larger volumes.

[Q] exFAT external sd card problem...

I have the strangest feeling this has already been answered somewhere...but i've scoured the internet and havent found much of anything on the topic. I've read some mixed statements saying ppls sgs4 see's an external sd card formatted as exFAT, others say it isnt working for them. I've figured out a way to get the hardfloat Kali Linux ARM gui terminal working and all applications installed running in a chrooted environment...however the image size needs to be a minimum of 6gb to install all programs. I'd like to go with 8gb just to give it a little play. I have an SGH-I337 (AT&T) and am rooted, i've tried stock rom w/ stock kernel, stock rom w/ KTweaker kernel, said it supports exFAT but did not work. Also i've tried Cyanogenmod 10.1, but havent tried the KTweaker kernel w/ cyanogenmod yet. After formatting the 16gb microsd i have to exFAT and inserting it into the phone it states "Preparing SD Card"...and immediately says "SD Card is safe to remove". Anybody have any insight as to how i can get around this 4gb filesize limitation? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Here's the deal.
All cards 32gb or less (SDHC cards) come formatted in Fat32.(Part of SDHC spec) This includes a file limit of 4gb max for a single file.
All cards 64gb or more (SDXC cards which the S4 supports) come preformatted in exFat (Part of SDXC spec). This does not have a 4gb file limitation.
The stock Samsung / AT&T Firmware supports exFat. (I bought a 64gb SDXD formatted with exFat and plugged it in and worked right away). Most recoveries do to. (TWRP does at least).
However, I flashed CM10.1 onto my S4. CM10.1 does _NOT_ support exFat. Initially I backed up and reformatted my card in Fat32. Angry with the 4gb file limitation (I have many 720p and 1080p movies over 4gb..) I actually took the microSD card out, used a adapter and hooked it up to a Linux system (Ubuntu 13.04 in my case) and used gParted to format the card to EXT4 filesystem. EXT4 is a filesystem most Linux machines use and support natively. This is actually the filesystem most newer Android device use for their internal SDCard / Data partitions! I popped the card back in, CM10.1 reads it perfectly! And I was able to copy files over 4gb to the device!
So its not a hardware thing since the S4 is SDXC compatible. Just formatting / partition time issue.

I greatly appreciate the breakdown! However i do have a question, since the sgs4 supports exFAT, why does it not see it after i reformat my 16gb to exFAT? Is it because it is an SDHC and not an SDXC? Also, does the type of recovery you have installed alter what filesystem types are recognized?

No problem!
As far as the spec goes, if it's formated in exFatand its SDHC it should still read it fine. Filesystem is just a filesystem. The spec just says what is used by default on cards.
One possible issue though, did you format your card in your phone? Sometimes the odd way these work the SD cards like to be formatted in the phones themselves. It worked formatting from a Computer for my ext4 case, however that does not work for all cards/phones/filesystems sometimes.

I've tried formatting from phone, 3 different computers (one computer running Debian), cfdisk command line as well as gparted, also window's format utility. It seems though nothing is working however after going to Cyanogenmod 10.1 last night and formatting the external to ext4 the phone only displayed "Reading SD Card" then "SD Card is blank". It works perfectly fine whenever the phone formats it, it just doesnt like any other type of filesystem. It is a polariod sd card which gave me issues in the past. Hopefully i can get this resolved and post more on it. Probably just something small i'm missing :/

As far as I know there aren't and posts saying it supports it but I've used TWRP with exFAT, Ext4, and FAT32 formatted ROMS.

roms not reading 64gb sandisk sdcard
I have the 64gb sandisk ultra class 10 sdcard... and it flat out works in stock... even when I recover. But doesnt work atall using wicked rom and a couple others. ExFat is the reason... those roms dont support it...

the default formatting from the phone seems to be either FAT or exfat but files over 4GB can't be written. (exfat is supposed to do over 4gb right?)
So, what i'm doing wrong?

Official Galaxy S4 doesnt support NTFS (not sure about Ext4). but there are some custom kernels that can deal with NTFS.
I found this on wikipedia:
exFat advantages: File size limit of 16 EiB–1 byte (limited by volume size), raised from 4 GiB−1 byte in a standard FAT32 filesystem.
so I guess yes it can handle files more than 4GBs, I haven't tried it myself.
Use the official SD formatter tool, it formats cards with 64 GB and larger using the exfat system.

With the build in formatting tool is what I use to format it, but then I can't write a 30GB file
in the file size limit you mention " File size limit of 16 EiB–1 byte" what's EiB?

If it's a cheap and therefor most probably fake SD card this can also be a problem. Most cheap 64GB cards do not have the advertized capacity.

I Always format my SD cards using Minitool (PC app). Never missed a beat.
If this doesn't work I still think it's a fake SD-card

so does the default bult-in android formatting do FAT or exFAT? It doesn't seem to be possible to tell from the phone?
So, seems like the only way forward is to format it in exFAT?

I am pretty sure it will only format in the style it was originally eg. Original setup of fat32 it will format fat32, if EXfat it will format EXfat.
Ext,1, 2, 3, 4 are all native to android (Linux) so ext4 shouldn't be an issue.
When I formatted my 64Gb card sd formatter did not format it to EXfat I had to do it manually. Please not that windows Xp does not directly support EXfat you need to manually install a patch and then manually format the sd card via cmd window
You'll have to confirm the command but it's something like
Format x: /fs:exfat
This is what I had to do on my old Xp box to do the job.

Oh btw ntfs is proprietary file system to micro$oft and technically it's closed source, but I read somewhere ages ago someone managed to hack something together that does work

formatted it to exfat and it works now
so for anyone else that wonders here is the summary of what I found
the android on Samsung S4 reads only FAT and exFAT on the SD card.
NTFS and Ext4 it does NOT recognize.
by default it formats FAT
I had to format it exfat on a PC
works now, still haven't tried with files over 4GB but shouldn't be a problem
