Condition you got your tablet in. - Nexus 7 (2013) General

What's the condition you got your tablet in? Were there any defects?

Prostrate. Definitely prostrate. Tablet was perfect though. Mods - humor can only be suppressed so far.

Factory sealed.
Why do you ask?
Are people getting used, physically damaged ones?

Odd question. Regardless, my 32 gig unit from Memory Express in Calgary, Alberta was perfect, the box was in great shape, fully sealed and not damaged. The tablet had it's plastic protector wrapped around it, all accessories also as expected.

Maybe they're asking if it arrived without any defects?
IDK....
Mine was Ø defects.

I don't know exactly if this is suppose to be like this...But I've noticed that my N7 Gen2 arrived with these strange little "knicks", "dings" or indents...Whatever you wanna call them....Right between where the edge of my device is and where the screen starts.
It's a very minor defect if it is one...So I won't be returning it as everything else is perfect on it, and isn't exactly worth the hassle.

Like others, mine was factory sealed, the battery had about a 40% charge (I picked it up at a local Staples store).

My n7 came factory sealed but it has an oil slick on the back around the nexus label. In addition, I have noticed some of the reported problems with the gps and momentary freezing when I'm using a browser. Otherwise, I am quite happy with my n7.

Hmm...I tried taking pictures...But they're pretty small, and I don't exactly have a super good camera (N4). The pictures I tried taking, just had light reflecting in the area I'm talking about.
Here is what I got:
!NOTE!: The very bright part at the top isn't what im talking about..Thats just light reflecting...But you can sort've make out in the very corner, the "dings" I was talking about. This is all around the device in the crack between where the screen (glass/whatever) and the device edge. As I said...Its minor for me, and not really worth taking back.

The tablet was used! Smudges all over the place! In fact, someone had already downloaded and installed angry birds!
I specifically remember asking Best Buy to ship me a brand new model!

Kidding. Thread seems oddly worded. Sounds like 'did the tablet arrive in new condition or used', rather than, 'did your tablet have any defects'?

Odd, I thought I was the only one. Picked mine up at a local Wal-Mart on a whim and was expecting a pristine N7 like my first four 2012 N7s. Checked the seals on the box just in case and they were all good, but was surprised to see what looked like a smudge/fingerprint on the screen after taking off the plastic (not mine, obviously) as well as little nicks on the top left edge right in between the screen and the back. Almost looks like as if someone tried to pry the thing open... the device itself works perfectly with no issues so I'm still trying to decide if it's worth taking a gamble and exchanging it for a new one.

Brand new. Still sealed. No issues or problems so far. 32GB Model Nexus 7
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2

Picked first at Staples had been opened (seal on white box ropes) and plastic taken off abs it was already on. The screen was just off. In fact I looked at battery stats and it showed the tablet on just for a sec and not awake until 7 days later when I got it. I returned BC it had a dead pixel. Second was sealed and all however I am having multi touch issues. Just my luck.

Mine also had a similar situation around the edge and I also have a small spec of im assuming dust under the screen but it doesn't bother me too much so i wont return it.

Is anyone actually happy?

So I picked up my Nexus 7 from GameStop, and I can't express how happy I am about this purchase! I always see everyone complaining about dead pixels, lifted screens, etc. Are there other people out there just as happy as me? I don't see anything wrong with the hardware, and 4.1.1 runs beautifully, couldn't be happier!

It's hard to say, since mine hasn't arrived yet. I'm in Aus, so that's expected.
Most of what I've heard is very positive, though.
I'm happy love it at this price!
Mine appears to be perfect from the play store except the flicker issue.

Its fair to say that reading XDA around the launch of a new bit of hardware you've bought will make you paranoid as hell.
A lot here sit at home with their forensic kits waitng for their new equipment to arrive then put the thing through an hours inspection at least as soon as they get it. They'll have all the weird test patterns for the screen that XDA have produced along with microscopes and measuring calipers.
In other words, if you want to feel good about your new toy, probably best not to come here for a bit.... It can be the OCD centre of the internet at times.
I might be when mine arrives next month if it is defect-free
I recieved mine in Melbourne, AUS yesterday with the screen completely stuffed - Washed out, burn-in and uneven backlighting!
So no, I am not particularly happy, but if mine was good then I would be VERY happy.

I agree 100%, everyone waiting on their 7 should avoid these forums for a minute... when I was on my way to pick mine up, I was paranoid as hell, couldn't stop thinking about dead pixels, or something.. and I usually have horrible luck when I buy retail products, I always get the defects. Guess someone was watching out for me for the 7 ahaha

I had to return mine due to faults, but I'm still very happy with it! Faults happen, esp on new runs, and historically I've been very lucky with my tech. I'm not happy I have to wait to play with it again, but that'll be outweighed by the replacement arriving fault free. Enjoy yours!

It's a $200 device so you can't expect the screen quality to be like a Pioneer Kuro.... Its a decent screen for the money, but yeah its not HD S+ AMOLED. Its not $800 either.
If mine didn't have dead pixels and screen bulge.....I'm sure I'd be happy.

I admit if there were a few things that were native to the N7 I'd be ALOT happier .( support for flash- I know this is Adobe's main fault, a sd slot , a rear high quality camera, Gorilla Glass instead of Corning® Fit Glass , plastic bezel replaced with a metal one, ) But hey what can you expect with a price just above the $200.00 mark ?
Overall I'm happy so far.
-I'm having some issues with the touch pad/lag in games but I'm now blaming that on immature Tegra drivers .Hoping an update fixes this soon.

Yes your right, SD card is a big one. For the camera, I have an upgrade in march (Verizon) and I plan on getting the best android phone I could get my hands on. But I have the 16gig so I haven't ran into an issue with memory yet. Also gorilla glass would have been lovely, and the metal over plastic of course. But being my first tablet, for only 250$, I could definitely overlook some of these faults!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I'm not particularly happy. Mine arrived dead, and remained dead even after being left on charge overnight. Reading through these forums, this is the list of faults I've seen.
- Dead on arrival
- Dead after a few hours use
- Light bleeding down side of the screen
- Screen/colour washout
- Yellow tints on the screen
- Image retention lasting minutes
- Dead pixels
- Screen glass bulging
- Creaking screens
- Erratic touch screen / dead zones
- One legged type sound from speakers
- Microphone dead on arrival or failing within days
- Endless NFC force closes on first boot
- Lag
However, I do agree with kitch9's sentiment. I'm guessing only people with faults are posting and I'm hoping there's plenty of perfect devices out there somewhere! It is a human trait to tell more people if you receive bad service, rather than good.
Mines is running perfect and defect free. Always seem like no matter the product, there's always a percentage that has issues or people that has gripes with it. Don't let those mess up your experience with your device. Its a great deal and it performs better than most high end tablets/phones out right now. Its a great deal for the power you get. Very happy to own one.
I'm happy my I/O unit is perfect
Well sort of ie: random crashing (NFC mostly, menu buttons crashed once) flickering, top bar freezing, dead pixels (3 of them), speaker volume sucks. Urgh the glass on this sucks! I have micro scratches already! My 4S and iPad combine don't have as many!
But its all cherry other wise

Picked mine up from Gamestop and it had no faults. I was the only one in my town to pre-order the thing which is surprising. Its because my little Nexy didnt have to share a box with others so he slept unharmed while he was on the plane
Mine is perfect. No lag, no light bleeding that I can see when using, audio works, no screen lifted, battery life is great (first charge last night, and only because I forgot to turn off Dice so it kept the tablet on, doh!).
I love mine. Got a nicely built one , just like my galaxy nexus was. Although we shouldn't be guessing and hoping for products that we are paying for..

Is this what everyone complains about?

Just got my nexus 7 in today. It seems fine, although, I noticed that con the cleft side of the screen, it seems to be slightly raised in the middle. The corners attached fine. Are people sending out back for this? It doesn't seem like an issue, just an annoyance
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Sounds like it. Seems like it's always on the left side for some reason. It's lifts up over the bezel and you can push down on it and it lifts again later. That is how mine is... or was hopefully.
I heated it up with a game, then put a couple clamps on it, left it over night turned off, and today it has stayed down so far. Hope the adhesive that is suppose to hold the glass down sticks now.
I had a previous one though that was slightly different, it was raised on the left side, but I couldn't push it down. Seemed like a screw was tightened too far or something. I sent that one back.
Either deal with it or get a refund if it really bothers you. You can also try number of fixes that are posted on these forums. They pretty much all have this issue to some degree.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes this is it, but the real problem is if it makes a noise when you push on it. THATS the annoying part.
Mine doesn't make any noise, although it definitely is a tiny bit squishy and if you try and push hard on it, it does act a little like an LCD monitor. I just didn't care enough to try and return it, as I would have never noticed it if everyone hadn't had their panties up in a wad as much as they did. I figure the worst that happens is that it gets worse over the next year and I end up having to spend a whole $200 more on a newer model.
I agree. I can't imagine this truly hurting the experience. Oh well. Not a big deal as long as it works well

Are you guys serious? If I buy a product, it better not have defects. Why would anyone settle for bad quality? Products these days should not have any issues with the technology we have.
This doesn't make sense to me.

I agree, if it was a true issue I would get a new one. In my case, it is only raised in the middle, and not that noticeable. Everything else is fine. You can fix that too
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Besides it shouldn't affect performance. I hope
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When I got my second one from the play store, it looked like the middle of the left side was raised. I thought I pushed it down but it never came back up.
I keep looking at it and touching it but nothing. I don't know if I imagined it or maybe bad lighting.
Just install a TPU case where the lip overhangs the screen. Problem solved. Out of sight out of mind. I'm enjoying my N7.
If its a problem 6 months later then I'll call and exchange it. Big whoop.

I don't think that they all have this issue, only a select few. I have been lucky enough to get 4 Nexus 7's and no issues. I have seen the issue posted on the site several times though, and the fixes seem pretty easy. There are some youtube videos on fixing it too. Good luck fixing it mate, would take advantage of the warranty if I were you.

You can't understand how when someone holds their tablet by the left bezel and it creaks like a floor board, they'd like to return it? That perhaps when using the tablet as a book they don't want to be distracted by clicking noises?

I am not talking about a problem to that extreme, I am talking about, a very slight raise in the middle, with no squeak. The only thing that I can think of that could be bothersome about that is that when you push hard on the bezel, a little bit of the left screen ripples

I have exact the same problem as described. They most annoying part is they "cracking" sound it does when tapping on the left side. I curious whether the touchscreen responsivness issue is somehow related to this problem.
Btw I thought it might be related to the processor since its also on the left side, maybe the heat causes the glue to detach ... if you know what I mean.

Buying a Nexus 7 soon.

I'm planning on buying the N7 soon, as I played with it in a store today and it's definitely everything I want in a tablet.
That aside, I did hear about a lot of issues with hardware when it first came out.
You think any widespread production issues would be solved by now so my chances of buying a non-defective device would be better?
Buying from Walmart most likely since they have layaway,
Thanks.

Its likely that the newer batch of the Nexus 7 device may not have those screen issues, but again, that doesn't mean you should not buy and wait few more months... i bet in 3 months there will be new device coming out and that will create same dilemma. Bottom line -you can always return it and get a new one.

To be honest mate, I think Asus were rushing to get it out, so the QC wasn't as good as it should be.
I got a N7 last month, C80 version. I have to say absolutely flawless. No issues what so ever (touch wood)
Just get it out of the box in store, pus from the top right and bottom left side of the screen, check for any screen flex's.
If no screen flex's your good to go, take it home and have a little while testing it to see if you can find any other issues, such as Speaker crackle or light bleed.
If no issues here your good to go.
Good luck with this amazing device ! Have fun, hope I helped.
Put a N7 on layaway today, anymore insight?

What I would look for.
Dead pixels (use an app)
Low brightness flicker. Open maps or some other white screen app at 0% see if it flickers.
Test screen responsiveness when its hot. Try playing a graphics intensive touch screen game for a while and see if it stops responding at any point or fails to recognize touch input.
Try using the keyboard as well this also triggers it.
Look at the screen at the store. Ask them to open the box (most will allow you) and look at the screen behind a black background. If you can see the gray part above the screen on both sides your good. Also test with your finger nail glide your nail from the screen to the gray edge. It should hit contact with the gray part not fall off the glass then hit.
Test the speaker at high levels. Make sure there is no whispers or that it sounds like its blown.

He is saying the glass should be slightly recessed, so you should feel a small edge. The way I see it is if you buy it from a store you will be able to return it, so don't be too worried. Also, its been a few months now, I wonder if the issues have slowed down some.
I got mine last night and so far its been great. I love it.
I wouldn't worry about issues, it's a vocal minority.. We have 5 here, all of them are perfect.

[Q] Did your RMA have problems?

Ive gone thought 2 RMAs and ive phoned Google for the 3 one.
- 1 device: All the device made noise, cracking all the time.
- 2 device: Horrible screen bleeding and noise on the speaker
-3 device: A black line from top to bottom of the device. Can be seen on white screens.

I'll disagree only because people have suggested the same thing to me. I'm waiting for my 3rd device to ship. My first one has a bright spot you see in the middle whenever the phone is held from an angle, like a cluster of stuck pixels. The second had a bad yellow tint and black dust under the screen.
In the past 2 years I've bought 2 Lenovo laptops, an Asus Zenbook, a PSVita, an iPod Touch, a Samsung TV, Nexus One/S/Galaxy, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, a Xoom and a Galaxy Tab 10.1.
At NO point have I had to return or exchange a single one of these devices.
I otherwise love the device, but I have no doubt that corners were cut in the manufacturing process to attain the low price.
You are lucky your rma is shipping. This is my first rma with the n4 and they're not even shipping it to me. It's been almost 2 weeks too.
I ordered 4 originally (not for selling, for friends). Mine was the only one with problem (overheating, screen flicker, bad MicroUSB port). The RMA'd device was awesome in every way, but had no functioning Magnometer (so no orientation sensing or compass functionality). Still waiting for the second RMA to get here. Other than that, amazing phone.
My first device had the yellow spot syndrome so I RMA'ed it. Was disappointed to find the replacement had a yellow tint on the display. Was planning on RMAing that too until I found out it could be fixed with software. So I'm now happy with my 2nd n4.

Flashing the Jellytime kernel did it for me. There's also the Nexus 4 Display control that allows you to adjust it without changing kernels (I myself haven't used this but it looks promising).
I'm not sure if either would work if you have a stripe down the side, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the suggestions! Did you flash the jellytime kernel itself in the ROM thread, or did you flash the whole ROM along with the kernel? I don't know if there is a difference between the two besides the lack of OC. The kernel didn't fix the issues with me :c I might try the display control.

I just flashed the kernel only. Sounds like yours is likely hardware, sadly.

- 1 device: All the device made noise, cracking all the time.
- 2 device: Horrible screen bleeding and noise on the speaker
-3 device: A black line from top to bottom of the device. Can be seen on white screens.

RMA's are now back ordered as well. Mine just changed to pre-ordered, and the CSR says they are now completely out of devices. I'm gonna say, crap like this contributes, as well as people that fry their phone OCing. OP absolutely has the right to a high quality device. But given the obvious supply issues Google has been having, I don't think it would have hurt to just deal with it for a couple weeks, none of those are deadline issues, and you have a full year to RMA for a manufacturer defect. I have a 3/4 inch tall strip across the center of my screen with no touch response, damn near cripples the device's usability.
Oh well, I guess that just means I get a phone from the third batch, that much less likely to have defects I hope. Or maybe I'll get the OP's refurb'd 1st device, cause I'm not that damned picky.
Again, OP does have the right to a high quality device, but now this kinda crap is screwing over user's with deadline issues.
my RMA was very fast (australia) shipped within 24hours of calling to setup the RMA
My phones earpiece cut out randomly so often i couldn't hear people when they called. the new one is perfect tho.
My old phone rattled and buzzed real loud and the replacement fixed that but it has a yellow tinted screen with clear spots.

they dont have any new ones to use for RMAs so people are just getting "refurbed" returns that already had problems even if the problems are unrefurbable like screen issues

A question about rma units.

Are the rma units brand new? A rep told me that they are brand new. My brand new nexus 4 has a small white pixel & it stays the same on every app that i go into except when there a dark background. But its hard to find. But it annoys me now that i know where it is. Will google charge 300 dollars if they don't see the white stuck pixel?
Yes they are brand new. I just submitted RMA on 3/22 and got the new designed 302k device.

What was wrong with your nexus ? My has a really small stuck pixel I hope they notice.
When I press on the right side of the back of my phone about 3/4 of the way down, the glass depresses/deforms a bit and makes a pop/click sound.
Considering RMA, don't want it to fall apart due to ****ty build issues.

My device had a weird white line in the upper right corner of the display. It almost looked like a crack, but underneath the screen. Only noticed it when I had the device in landscape otherwise it was almost hidden by the status bar.
Just to make sure they found it, I attached a sticky note pointing at the defect before I shipped it back.
New device is much better then the device I thought I was happy with. Much better battery life and stays much cooler.
Google rma are brand new sealed box yes.

Nexus devices are made to be rooted. I've never ran the stock software on either device. Opened box, unlocked boot loader rooted and back on AOKP goodness.

Im going to attempt to root it : I rooted all my phones in the past just to get the stock android feeling.
Sorry to hijack. I got mine from a Wind shop in Greece since here is no G Store.
Would you think this is a cause for RMA.
The right one is mine.
You see the diff in screen temp and it also has black regions under the screen that are noticeable in white backgrounds.
Thanks

When I got my rma nexus 4 yesterday. I had the same problem with white color but after a while the screen went back to normal. Just wait a while for the screen to settle.
Ok. I will. Thank you. Although it seems so different.
Another reason i don't want to rma is caise i think i got a great device.
It does not get hot, or buzzing noise or creaking sounds and i got the "fast" cpu.
