Does ODIN wipe data? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

When using ODIN to flash stock firmware, will app data and internal SD data be wiped?
I understand that the /system and recovery partitions will be wiped.
As well, I've frozen a number of apps using Titanium Backup -- will these remain frozen after stock firmware is flashed? (currently thinking of using ODIN to upgrade to MG1)
Thanks.

All your apps will be wiped. Pictures, music, etc will not be.
Edit, your tibu backups will not be deleted, but if you flash the firmware with odin you'll have to re- freeze the apps you froze.

When I did it on my S3 I lost all app data but my personal media (photos etc.) remained intact. I don't think it wipes your previous backups, but there's no harm in keeping a copy on your computer in case anything goes wrong

[Q] Incomplete TWRP Restore

Hello,
I have a Nexus 10 (manta) tablet and made a full nandroid backup 10 days ago of the stock+root Android installation. I did that so I would be able to revert back to it if need be after trying out CM 10.1. I found that CM still required some refinement for manta so I wiped the system, did a factory reset and wiped the dalvic cache, then tried restoring the previous backup I made, of the stock system. The backup folder is 2.46GB big and the /data partition is split between two archives. When restoring, the system partition and first data archive seem to backup properly, but after that, the tablet reboots, omitting the second data archive which is pertinent for me to restore all of my apps.
I've installed the latest TWRP, version 2.4.0.0 just in case there was a bug.
How can I fix this and get my tablet back to normal?
Thanks XDA,
Spike
Note: My tablet isn't bricked, I can still boot to the stock rom after doing the incomplete restore but my apps are incomplete.
Edit: I've just updated TWRP to 2.4.1.0 and get a little farther this time. It begins restoring the second /data archive but still reboots during the process.
I'm currently having this issue. Did you ever get it resolved?

I had the same problem, posted a day ago or so about it, but I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2121673 and now everything is all good. I just flashed the super wipe zip and then restored and it did NOT reboot during the restore.

I had this problem as well. It was really pissing me off, I think it happens when you have a large backup. Anyways, I just kept trying it, and on the third time it worked for me. Maybe I just got lucky. When restoring it wipes everything anyways, but you can try wiping data, system, and cache beforehand and see if it helps.

My backups are 10GB+ each(I basically make full images to restore to for each ROM) and I never had this issue in the dozens of restores I've done. I always factory reset, wipe cache/dalvik, and then format system(wipe ROM) in that order before restoring the image. In a worst case scenario you can factory image the tablet if the restore fails after the stock ROM has been wiped.
Also you said two archives? My backups are just 1 folder with the 5 partitions and 5 md5 files?
I had this issue as well, after trying to restore from checking out the Ubuntu preview. Ended up giving up on it and enjoying as best I can the clean install. Would still like to restore it if possible though.
I was "finally" able to do a full restore of a backup. I had to break up the restore process though. First I restored system and boot. Once that restored I restored data and was able to get a full data restore as well.

[Q] partitions messed up

Ive been flashing for a while now. Just recent my phone got stuck on the "Galaxy S4" screen amd I had to restart like 15 times and reflash a few times before it booted into the rom. Now I see that I only have 3.5GB of internal space left. Even off od a fresh flash with a complete format. I even fomatted all data in TWRP amd all that. How do I get my space back?
Do I use odin and check off the repartition tab?
Sent from my SGH-I337M using xda app-developers app
Do not mess with odin and check repartition. This will do nothing but brick your phone. If any thing, use your custom recovery and format storage, but be prepared to lose everything. First find out what's taking up all the space.

I've heard of problems after formatting /data in twrp on this device. You may consider flashing back to stock and starting over
Keep in mind that the total internal storage available includes your /data partition as well as your internal SDCard (/data/media/). TWRP will not format your internal SDCard unless you explicitly tell it to. Check out the stuff on your SDCard and see if it's eating up space (like a nandroid backup for example that can take up over 2.5gb of space!)
If still unresolved, I would do these steps:
- Backup your internal SDCard to your computer, and otherwise backup everything (nandroid, data backup, what-have-you) to your computer
- Do a simple wipe-data with TWRP
- Use Odin to return to MDL stock (or Canadian equivalent)
- Use stock recovery to wipe your data (this should also wipe SDCard)
- Root with motochopper, install custom recovery, install rom, etc.
To avoid accidentally downloading any OTA updates, I would recommend simply removing your SIM card during all this

Stock unrooted MF9 zip? Or tar.md5 that won't wipe data?

Is there a zip we can flash in TWRP or CWM to go back to stock? I'm stock rooted with a couple tweaks (like hotshot mod) and I want to revert to full stock to take the MJA OTA. I'd of course need to manually flash the stock recovery afterwards via odin for the OTA to work.
I know I can odin back to stock, but that wipes data (and possibly the internal sd card as well, the thread isn't clear). I want keep data, since there shouldn't be anything incompatible with full stock.
I suppose I could backup the internal sd card, backup data with TWRP, odin to MF9, take the OTA, use cf to get root, odin TWRP back on, restore the internal sd from backup, and restore data from TWRP. But it would certainly be a lot easier and faster if there was a way to just go to stock without wiping data...

If you had research. Restoring data on 4.3 messes up your phone. You should stick with mf9 for now really. The only good thing about 4.3 is gear support but come with knox security which is being a pain in the a** for people now. But thats my opinion

4.3 should have the TRIM support (the main reason that I was interested in it)

I did research, the concensus was that titanium backup restoring wasn't working, and that was only when restoring the app itself (installing from the Play Store then restoring data only works). But restoring the actual data partition should be fine.
Or if that's an issue, and I had to wipe data, then I would just restore data right after odining to stock MF9 before taking the OTA.

If you use the stock mf9 tar to return to stock, all of your data will still be there, it does not wipe your data. Your system partition will be overwritten along with recovery, bootloader, and modem. But it will not touch your data. Download the one from sammobile and you should be fine.

Yeah trust me, there's a lot more good to 4.3 than just gear support. Trim support was my most anticipated feature i was looking forward to as well, but I can tell a huge difference In the clarity of the screen, and colors as well. Battery life on stock kernel has been ridiculously good.

Try a full factory reset. Be careful as this will wipe your internal storage.

Thank you for your answer but I did it after flash stock rom via odin. Wiped data / factory reset , cache partition , mounted cache , system , data , wiped dalvik cache..
Wiping data does not equal a factory reset. Wiping data does just that, wipes user installed apps. But generally leaves the internal storage alone.
A factory reset returns the phone to the settings it came out of the factory with, including a clean internal storage(If you have the stock rom). I heard that changing roms and just wiping data, dalvik and cache will still leave behind some files.
But it could also be untrue.

Flashing stock rom is same with factory reset i think clears everything.
I don't know. Haven't flashed stock on this device yet.
But don't most guys recommend doing a wipe before going back to stock?
I dont know i'll try that when i have free time. I did research some guys saying lollipop causing these problems. I'll try wipe before flash stock rom again , if issues keep happen i'll use lates 4.4.2 custom rom. Thank you for your answers i'll report back.
Real reset
This method will wipe everything, including operating system and efs files. Before you do this:
you must root
Download twrp recovery
Install the recovery using the app from the play store
Boot into recovery mode and have twrp backup everything
save your backup to an SD card and the computer (can't hurt to have two backups)
Doing the above will preserve your phone important data like your imei and efs
in case something goes wrong.
NOW
after you have backed everything up use twrp recovery to wipe data. Have twrp wipe everything except for your SD card (don't won't to lose the backup)
After everything has been obliterated have twrp boot you into download mode.
Download Odin from XDA preferably 3.09 (most stable release) and then grab an official stock firmware from a trusted source. The latest stock firmware should be at least 4.4.2
If you have carriers other than t-mobile you will also need to find a PIT file for partitioning.
When you have all of this open up Odin with your phone connected in download mode and make sure repartitioning, clear efs and nand-erase is checked along with the defaults.
Select pda button and choose your firmware (unzipped tar.md5 format.) Then select repartitioning PIT file button and direct to where you have the PIT file downloaded.
now click start (be sure that the Com port is recognized by Odin: will be highlighted in blue or yellow.)
This will take a while depending on your computer.
when it finishes your phone should reboot with a fresh os and filesystem. If you get stuck in a bootloop reboot into recovery mode and do a wipe data and wipe cache. Reboot and your phone should be good as new.
IMPORTANT!!! It is vital you keep your TWRP backups for as long as you have your phone if you lose them and something goes wrong while flashing your phone you will lose important things such as IMEI baseband which will prevent you from connecting to your network and Sim card recognition.
Thank you so much i'll try this now.

Is that another custom recovery?
If so then yes just make sure you have all of your system files and most importantly your efs backed up.
Run odin as administrator if that doesnt work, try using another version of Odin.

What carrier are you using, model number of the phone, etc.
Have you backed everything up? And can you flash the custom recovery through Odin if it fails?
Try it without wiping efs first just to be safe
Look here for your device you will be able to find standalone flash able versions of twrp that should work through odin.

Samsung Secure Folder data

I just did a factory reset of my S10+ forgetting to back up Samsung's Secure folder prior to doing so. Although I didn't backup the Samsung secure folder, I did do a complete backup of my phone to my HDD. I was wondering where is the Samsung secure folder data stored in Android? And if I was to copy my phone's backed up data overwriting what's on the phone, will it restore the secure folder's data? TIA!
Just restore your backup and all should be good.

i dont think so , after full wipe mobile , nothing will back to secure folder even if he restore .
hope iam wrong.

If TWRP is involved it should just restore the back up and go unless TWRP recovery has changed over the years. If he's on a snapdragon model, then smart switch should do all the work in restoring the backup.
