[Q] Nexus 7 stuck at locked fastboot - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After a failed attempt to install the 4.3 update with the NRT, my N7 is stuck in a locked fastboot mode. Every time press start it says booting failed.
is there a way to fix this? or am i doomed?
The guide for returning it to a stock image requires an unlocked fastboot mode...

Sounds like you'll have to unlock and flash again.

well the device has usb debuging turned off...
is there a way to turn it back on from the fastboot mode?

Fastboot doesn't need USB debugging. USB debugging has nothing to do with custom recovery or fast boot.

If you made a backup before, then start your device into boot loader Volume Up+Volume Down+Power button. Then go to recovery and recover your boot status. In case if you forgot to make a backup, then you should do at least one for your systems apps and then do a fresh install over again and restore system configuration afterwards.

how do you know for sure its not recognizing it in bootloader?
When I plug in my nexus I can't do anything. The hardware buttons don't work. I don't see anything in the drivers when I plug it in either.

Well, just to let you know, you haven't bricked it. Bricking something means you can't access the device what so ever i.e. it won't boot, won't go into recovery/bootloader mode etc. As to fixing it, I'm not sure. Can the device turn off and on? Have you got drivers installed properly (was fastboot and adb working before this happened)?

I am sure you tried every option , have you tried adb reboot recovery command, when u turn on phone, or adb reboot bootloader. If the manual way does not work, for example when device is powered off (volume down then holding power for 10 seconds). Let me know. Need more details.

Ok I'm trying that now.

Hi I think I'm facing the same issue as poliati. I tried to flash it back to stock image but the process freezes at "sending 'system' <438656kb>. Can someone please help?

So rebooting isnt the problem but getting into recovery or even getting my computer to recognize my device is what i need help with. The entire thing freezes when im in bootloader and try to plug into my computer. So i have to reset by holding down the power button. Ive installed and uninstalled drivers through wugfresh toolkit and nexus 7 toolkit.

That doesnt work either. The thing is, I can use the volume buttons BEFORE I plug it in, but as soon as I plug it into a computer the tablet freezes and i have to reset it.
So ive uninstalled all drivers including the SDK and reinstalled everything and im still stuck at the bootloader. Im starting to believe that its pretty much a lost cause. Can anyone help with trying to figure out what i may have to do now.
If you can get into the bootloader, you're not bricked, nor is it a lost cause.
Since you uninstalled them reinstall the drivers. Download the factory image (nakasi) from here, and then follow these instructions to use cmd and fastboot to reflash the stock ROM.
Ok I will try this.
Freakin love this site!!!
OK, so i now have everything up and running after about 2 hours of uninstalling and installing everything. Turns out that my cpu (or me) was duplicating the drivers. I feel dumb for that

[Q]Brick ?

Hey , i havent touched my N7 forquit a while .. today i tryed to turn it on and found out it is out off power soi plugged it into my charger but when i tried to turn it up i passed the google logo and was stuck at the blackbean logo (when its connected to the charger it show the charging ani but turns off after 5 sec then i need to click the power bottom to see the charging ani again) and when i try to get into fastboot i cant . it just shows me the place where i can select between "start" , "recovery" and "fastboot" but it get stuc on that screen . i cant move anything or just hit "start" cuz it doesnt work either .
So am i bricked ? what can i do ?
i dont understand how that happened since i didnt touch it all week long .. (oh yea and the battery never charges it stays forever on the lowest point of the ani)
Leave it charge for a while without messing with it.
secondly it is not bricked, if it turns on any bit and if it shows anything on the screen it is not bricked.
I don't know why people keep using that word incorrectly, brick means that your device is basically a brick, a paperweight.
And that screen that says recovery etc IS where you fastboot from, that's the bootloader screen.

If you get to the menu that says "recovery" "start" "reboot bootloader" then you are in fastboot mode/bootloader.
Leave it charge a while and see if it works and if not you can flash a factory image or better yet, reflash your recovery and flash a ROM zip

What error do you get when you try flash something by fastboot?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
When you are 'stuck' in fastboot, you have a couple ways to go about it... one option and that is to run the N7 toolkit to get the N7 into recovery. From there you can restore your stuff, drop stuff onto your N7 to flash a new rom, etc...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
Basically you run the toolkit like you are going to root it. Then when you get past installing the USB drivers and such, IIRC there was an option to get into recovery.
Ughh, toolkits.

Sounds like you need to fastboot the factory image to the device. Try multiple versions of fastboot. People have been reporting problems and switching to a new version of fastboot has helped.

Try a new version of fastboot... possibly from one of the rootkits then follow these instructions....

Sounds like you're in fastboot mode and the above should work. Possibly make a YouTube video to show us the problems.

stock nexus 7 stuck in boot loop

i read that it can be fixed by unlocking and rooting. problem is it is a friends and he doesn't know what version of android is on it. also can't put it in usb debugging.
Install this using Fastboot which does not require USB debugging. Simply download the factory images package then extract into the ADB folder. Typing "flash-all.bat" will flash all stock images including the boot, recovery, system and data.
thank you that worked

I tried doing this and looked pretty promising because I have the same exact problem, but the terminal just says that it is waiting for device and does not budge. I have tried rebooting both computer and device. Neither work. Any other suggestions?
I tried again and now it says erasing 'boot'... and hangs there..
Is there any way to enable USB debugging or ADB through the command line fastboot?

Is your bootloader unlocked? If not boot into fastboot mode and type the command fastboot OEM unlock follow the prompt on the tablet and it will reboot now try the flashall.bat again. There is no way to enable USB debugging without selecting it from the menu that's a question that has been asked many times before

No. Sorry I forgot to mention that. My bootloader is not unlocked. And when I tried to do the fastboot OEM unlock, that is the only time the screen changes and gives me the option to unlock. When I scroll to yes and push the power button, the terminal says erasing user data and then it just gets stuck there.
I suspect that there is some kind of reading or writing problem.

OK if the bootloader won't unlock that sounds like a corrupted nand partition which would mean the internal memory is unwritable. One more suggestion try downloading wugfresh NRT use the unroot back to stock option tick soft bricked and force write. I'm not sure it will work with a locked bootloader.

I have attached a screen shot of what I got when I tried the NRT unroot. It appears as though you were right, and that it is not going to work with a locked bootloader.

OK well it looks like you are at the new motherboard stage then. Fastboot OEM unlock failing is a pretty sure sign that the internal memory of your nexus has become corrupted and it is no longer possible to read from or write to the tablet. If you have warranty now would be a good time to use it. If not eBay is a relatively cheap place to get a replacement motherboard. Sorry I can't be of more help than that

[HELP] Touch is broken

Hi guys!
I have a big problem with my LG Google Nexus 4: my touch is broken and i can't put the password. I tried to bypass the password searching solutions in forum of XDA Developers, but not successfully because i don't have root and USB debugging enabled. Any help for me? I can't use Factory Reset 'cause i don't have backup of my photos on my cellphone. This photos is really important and have a big emotional value for me.
Thanks for any help, guys!
Go into recovery and adb pull the photos from the phone and any other important files and proceed with wipe.

First I press the volume button and power to enter in the Safe Mode? After this what's the next step?
Remembering that I can not back up through the computer because I need the PIN to unlock access.

If your bootloader is currently unlocked you can flash a custom recovery and pull stuff off, otherwise you're out of luck.
Have the exact same problem!!! I made a thread on it but no replies. atm my phone is working, screen started functioning randomly again... it cant be a software prob cos im on complete stock (root), must be hardware but it still randomly works

Nexus 7 2012 grouper Can't unlock bootloader

I have the afore mentioned Nexus 7. Have all the toolkits and proficient in adb. Get to the unlock prompt for the bootloader and press power over the yes option. It comes back up in bootloader locked every time.
I am in an endless loop otherwise. I can load to safe mode also.
Have the 4.23 bootloader and was trying to take the ota to 4.4.3.
Used two different aio toolboxes both with no luck. Tried to force load a stock rom. No luck. It just keeps booting back to how the tablet was before the update then reboots before you can do anything.

If you are proficient in adb like you state, then drop the toolkits.
What commands are you using? Does adb recognize your device?
Toolkits or cmd prompt the result is the same. Bootloader acts like it is going to unlock but doesn't.

I too have this same issue.....
Once I get the unlock screen (using tool kit) and select yes.... it goes to reboot, but the tablet never comes back on...
Once I turn it back on, I never get passed the "Google" screen....
The tool kit ADB see's the tablet and runs through the "unlock" yet it never takes....
I assume that USB debugging is not turned on... but I can't get the tablet to start it up to turn it on...
Been trying SKIPSOFT ANDROID TOOLKIT.
Can anyone help?
Try the other toolkit.

Yes... I have attempted to unlock the device 3 times...
I have used 2 different tool kits and adb fast boot....
They attempt to unlock the device.... but as the unit goes to unlock, it goes to reboot and the unit doesn't come back on... If I manually turn it on, it still shows the unit as locked...
When using abd, the unit does try and unlock and then when it reboots it shows that it unlocked the device yet the device still shows locked..
I'm at a loss right now as to what I should do....
That's a problem. (Not being able to unlock with fastboot can be a sign of corrupted bootloader/partition/emmc)
Have you tried to factory reset your N7?

Yes... I tried a factory reset..... but, as of now, I can't get to that option... If I try to get into recovery, it just goes to an image of the android with a red "!".......
In that case, it's most likely a hardware failure.
