Removing system apps without root - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anybody help me with removing system apps without root?
Tried to do it using ADB but it says system/apps is read only, presumably because of no root.
There must be a way to do it via recovery? I found a script for samsung phones (flashable zip) here: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-remove-bloatware-from-android-devices-the-easy-way-without-root/
But it doesn't do anything in my Nexus 4 recovery, just fails. What's wrong with that zip that stops it from working on Nexus 4?
Any help greatly appreciated!

You are aware that if you remove any system apps, future android updates will fail until you put them back with the correct permissions?

Flashable .zip files are meant for custom recoveries. If you have a custom recovery, you can connect to your computer and run:
adb shell mount /system
adb shell mv /system/app/PACKAGE.apk /system/app/PACKAGE.apk.bak

No I didn't actually, sounds excessive!
But still, I'd really like to know this :]
Also when I booted TWRP recovery, it installed "SuperSU installer" as a system app, and I can't get the annoying notification go go away without removing the apk from system/app

That's the one! Worked perfectly, thank you.
I assume if I just remove the .bak from any files, any OTA updates will work fine?

Superuser?

Does anyone know how to install this on the aria?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
It's best to flash your Aria to a Liberated ROM. You can find it within the forums here. Since I can't post links yet. This will root the device and SuperUser will be added.
Not sure about that app. It looks like it does the same thing as the SU that comes in the Liberated ROM by attn1, just without the few extra options.
I tried booting into clockwork and mounting the system partition and doing this:
adb push Superuser.apk /system/app
adb push su /system/xbin
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
adb reboot
but when it rebooted the superuser app did nothing at all. No prompt or nothing running apps that needs su. I had usb debugging enabled. So I just restored a nand backup.
Might be a dumb question, but did you do adb remount ?
I used clockwork to mount the system partition. When I tried it with just adb remount it wouldn't mount the system partition. I would always get "Not a directory" error. But when clockwork mounted the partition it wrote the files fine with no error. When I rebooted the superuser icon and version were different than the one that came with the liberated rom.
I'm trying this now, I'll report back when I do it. I'll try a few different apps that require SU
I did the commands it said, I see the new icon, and when I press 'Menu', it shows the prefrences, but when I click it, it freezes the app.
It's probably not compatible with our phone yet.
Could be, but I'm pretty sure it does work, because if I remember correctly, Titanium Backup needs SU permissions, and I haven't encountered any kind of errors with it yet.
I see you posted on the thread for the program itself. Hopefully someone there will have a response.
Yeah, I'm hoping to get a response to it. We will see.
The newer version 2.2.2 works.
Awesome, ill give it a shot a little later.
Tried the newer version, and I get the same issues.
How did you install this one? I booted in to clockwork and selected install from zip file on sd and selected that file on my sd card.
I just did it through adb. I'll give that method a shot.
Looks like after doing your method, it works perfect now. Not sure why using adb doesn't work.

Rooted, still can't delete News & Weather

Hi,
I used Unrevoked's one-click Mac .app to root my Aria. I can boot into Recovery fine, but perhaps pertinently (perhaps not) there's a weird loop I can't get out of: (bottom of post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829439)
Anyways, I installed CM6.1-Liberty afterwards using ROM Manager. Now I would like to delete the News and Weather application, but I'm finding it difficult:
I've tried with the Super Manager application, a ROOT manager. It has SuperUser permissions, it tried to mount /system as R/W when I navigate to it, but when I rename the .apk file, the file retains its old name.
I've also tried booting into Recovery, mounting /system from the Partitions menu, then using the Terminal Emulator to do 'mv /system/app/blah.apk /system/app/blah.apk.bak.' But mv complains that the directory is not empty! (are .apk's even considered directories?)
Is something messed up with my ROM? Anything else I can try?
With the phone in recovery and /system mounted, using terminal try navigating to the actual /system/app folder and then removing the .apk. Not sure if its the same as windows, which is the rm command.
rm application.apk
Sent from my cm6.1 Aria using XDA App
It worked! Booted into Recovery, mounted /system, connected via USB, opened up an adb shell, and was able to move the desired apk.
I tested this moving HtcLockScreen.apk on my Liberated ROM. Will try to move the News & Weather application on the CM ROM too, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Thanks!!!
All good. Thank you so much.
I've gotta wonder now: what is it about Recovery that lets you do this? I can't find much (if any) hard info on Recovery online, or hboot/fastboot for that matter. It's a little annoying having to power down my phone to adb stuff around, then powering back up.

I think it had to do with the fact that the aria is an s-on device (don't quote me on that). Whatever it is, the system can't be modified while android is running on the aria, so you have to boot into recovery to do it.

Not quite... You can put Titanium Backup into "Chuck Norris" mode and it will let you delete some system apps. Another easy way to achieve the same is to unzip the ROM, delete the .apk and .odex files you do not want, rezip it and re-flash. Bingo... the stuff you do not want is gone. You need to know what you are deleting though, some stuff is used by the system and other apps.
For anyone else whos wondering how to delete a non-uninstallable apk this is how I usually do it on windows (should be the same on mac too.)
- boot into recovery
-open new command promp
-adb shell mount /system
-adb shell rm -r /sysytem/app/apkname.apk
done and done, note letter case matters in apk name.
U can also extract the rom on ur computer and delete the .apks u don't want

[Q] Is it possible to push apps via adb to an encrypted xoom?

the subject says it all. I've been trying to push apps to my encrypted xoom all afternoon without any luck...
I'll go ahead and admit upfront that I am a noob when it comes to using the sdk... so that could also be a major factor.
adb install (insert exact location+ filename.apk for the app you want to install)
I just tested it out
for example
adb install C:/abc.apk
What command are you using? What error message are you getting? Did you do a adb remount to make sure that the /system/app path is writable?
You can always do an adb install [package name].apk as well.

I just tried to execute adb remount (I had not until you mentioned it), but I get a "remount failed: operation not permitted".
Code:
Hannibal:platform-tools dmoore$ ./adb install /Users/dmoore/Documents/android-sdk/platform-tools/AsusReader.apk
1259 KB/s (7747001 bytes in 6.007s)
pkg: /data/local/tmp/AsusReader.apk

Additional information: I am on a MacBook Pro using the latest version of the SDK (downloaded it yesterday).
try typing "adb devices" if it does not list your xoom try installing or re-installing the motorola usb drivers

just noticed the macbook part
http://www.samsung-tablets.com/motorola-xoom-usb-driver-for-pc-and-mac-download.html/
Ok... back to me being a complete when it comes to the SDK (and the Xoom in particular)...
My Xoom is completely stock... it has not been rooted or otherwise modified.
With that being said, is there some trick to getting the file system to mount as r/w? Do I need to reboot in to recovery before adb remount will work?

I've already installed the Android File Transfer app... it only allows me to browse the SD card - not the root fs... unless there's something I'm missing...

you dont have to be in recovery (recovery wont do any good unless you install clockwork recovery) for adb remount to work but if your not rooted you cant push files into the system folder thats the whole point of rooting is to unlock the system files also if your pushing it into /system/app the rom is odexed so you will need the apk plus the odex file

I have the odex file, so i'm not terribly worried about that.
My major question would be this though... Do I need to go full blown root, or can I just unlock the device?

Can't delete system apps with root

For some reason I cannot delete system apps. I know for sure that I am rooted and that the system is mounted. No matter what app I use it doesn't work. System app remover from the Play Store gives me a "failed uninstall" error, deleting the system app folders with root explorer does not work, and Titanium Backup doesn't work. I even tried changing the permissions to rw for each app to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Probably system write protection (see here http://androidforums.com/threads/zte-write-protection-for-zmax-and-other-zte-phones.1040331/)
running this will disable it
adb shell reboot disemmcwp

I deleted an important application on my rooted phone

Note: I'm new to XDA, so I've basically made no posts so far. I tried posting this under HTC Bolt/Evo 10, but since I have not made the 10 post threshold yet, I cannot post there, so I just made the post here. If this post needs to be relocated please let me know.
After rooting my phone (HTC Bolt), I foolishly deleted some bloatware applications without backing them up. One of them was TouchPal, a preinstalled keyboard app. I didn't think this would be much of a problem because I already had it disabled in settings and was using a separate keyboard app for other purposes.
However, when I restart my phone, it always asks me to type my pin and "decrypt" the phone. I'm not sure why it does this (previous cell phone didn't), but apparently (this is only a theory) it uses this keyboard application, so I can't actually type my PIN in to decrypt my phone.
I could be completely wrong, and I might have accidentally deleted some other important file from my phone, but either way, I don't know how to fix my phone right now.
I did a bit of research and found out I was supposed to flash a ROM onto my device. However, I don't think I can even connect my device to my computer because normally I would have to enable USB debugging and file transfers.
So basically: is there a way to connect my phone to my computer that would allow me to do whatever is necessary to let me access my phone again? (also should I be flashing a completely new ROM? I should still have everything on my phone except a couple bloatware applications, so is there an easier workaround?)
Update: I got my phone to connect to my PC by booting it in recovery mode. I'll delete this thread if I can successfully flash a ROM.
Hey!
You have already rooted your phone - perfekt!
Now you can start to your bootloader and from there you can flash a twrp recovery if you haven't yet.
If you didn't, there are many tutorials how to do: google: your phone flash custom recovery via fastboot mode
If you have done this - you can easily backup your data with twrp recovery (I think twrp is the best)
After you have done this you can make a full whipe of your system.
If you have done this maybe the failure isnt anymore, but now you have no code to unlock! If the app is still not there - go to apkmirror.com and download the app(there are even system apps). Or just google "xxx.apk download"
After this you can restore your data from twrp!
Summary:
1. Flash recovery. Via fastboot mode
2. Restore your data via recovery
3. Full Wipe
4. Restart
5. If app is still not there - search for APK and install
6. Reboot to recovery (e.g. volume up and home at starting phone, google...)
7. Restore data
8. Restart to system.
I don't know if this Is work, but it's worth to try.
If this don't work: you can transfer data from phone to PC via fastboot mode and then you can flash custom ROM or stock rom,...
I hope this works!

I remember an easier way.
Maybe you can install app via ADB in recovery mode.
Therefore you need:
custom recovery
ADB tools installed on your PC
USB Driver installed
The APK downloaded from here: https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk&s=TouchPal
If you have done this - reboot to recovery.
Navigate on your PC to the adb tools folder where adb.exe is in it. Open CMD with right click on address line.
Then write in CMD:
adb devices
If your phone is found, adb commands are working.
Then copy the APK in the folder where adb.exe is in it.
Type in CMD:
adb push xxx.apk /system/app(the address where you delete apk)
So maybe this works
So first check:
- custom recovery flashed?
- adb tools installed?
- USB driver installed?
If you have further questions, let me know.

The files were deleted within the phone itself through Titanium Backup, so I have no idea where the file location is. As of now, I can adb push the apk, but I don't know where to push it to.

Sorry for the late reply.
The command "adb shell chmod 644 /system/app/xxx.apk" doesn't work for some reason. It says it is not a directory. (I changed the name from xxx to the actual apk name by the way)
