[Q] Google Now won't sync birthdays or anniversaries from calendar - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have looked around and can't find a forum discussion on this. Sorry if I missed it.
I love Google Now. I am using the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4. I have activated all the cards in the available cards section including the birthday card. I noticed that my Google Now shows me a new card when I have an appointment in my calendar approaching (so thus it DOES see my calendar and syncs appointments). However, for the life of my it won't see birthdays and anniversaries of my contacts that also display in my calendar as items.
I am really frustrated with this and have tried many different things. I thought it was just a calendar thing. Google Now syncs with calendar but maybe not "extra" calendars like the "birthday and anniversary" one that I have (added through gmail). But then again my Google Now also syncs with my contacts where birthdays are located. After all, contacts is where the calendar pulls the data from in the first place. So can someone please help me understand how to get the birthday card on Google Now to show me this info when it is relevant?
Thanks much in advance.

I believe Google now gets birthday information from Google + (not from calendar)

It's silly that it syncs with my contacts and calendar but wouldn't implement this. Only like 5% of my contacts are on Google+. After all shouldn't Google now learn more and more about me the more info I give it? Well... I gave it my contacts info lol.

birthday widget

does anyone know of a widget or app that will allow me to view upcoming or all contact birthdays ?
thanks in advance
when you sync your phone with fb it'll sync the birthdays to your calendar as well so you'll able to see the birthdays of your fb contacts.

how exactly? i synced all my phone contacts to their respective fb account but their birthdays wont show in the calendar, i even tried syncing with outlook and back to the phone....
no can do...
On my G1 I used to use one called ebobirthday which was quite good. On the Desire, instead I have a slightly nicer solution - but only slightly nicer, because for some reason you can't seem to get at the synced FB dates
Sarch facebook apps for swissmenuo and add that app - it'll give you feerds for your FB events and contact birthdays. You can then add the ICS feed to your Google Calendar and use any of the calendar widgets to view just that calendar, or include it with your standard calendars . . . .

I'm using Google Calendar's function for birthday's...
(in Google Calendar) :
Settings|Calendars|Browse interesting calendars|More|Contacts' birthdays and events<--subscribe ^^
thanks guys,
unfortunately, i was hoping to steer clear of having data stored in the cloud. all of the birthdays are stored right there on the phone, all i want to do is have an app that displays upcoming birthdays in a widget.
used ebobirthday..works like a charm..it gets my fb friends birthday n integrated it into my HTC calendar...can even set alarm lol...

ebobirthday uses its own database to store birthdays doesn't it ? i was hoping to avoid this but it's looking like i'm going to have to cave in ...
after you set it to find all your contact birthday, there is an option to export the birthday into a csv file which i think u can save it and apply it to your google calendar or outlook or anything, i saved it but didnt try it, worried that it might mess up my calendar since i have ebobirthday on...hehe, you can try it and let us know the result
Facebook 2 Google
I used "birthday exporter" application on facebook, when you enter the application click "get your iCal file" then go to your google calendar and add the calendar (click on add, then "import calendar" and choose your downloaded iCal file) then sync from your phone to your google calendar.
Cheerz
thanks for the info, from the reviews, i see that some ppl says that it doesnt sync with android when there is no year added....
well i will stick with ebobirthday until everything is sorted out

Why is there 2 calender?

I noticed there is a default google calender usually and recently I noticed there is a new one called ' my calender'. Why are there 2 google calender on my device?
I logged to gmail.com but it only show I have one default calender. Is it because of the new firmware?
I am using JM2

The "my calendar" is a local calendar that isn't synced with Google calendar.
As to why there is such a calendar, it's for example very convenient if you want a business calendar, that is also updated by your assistent, and a local private calendar that you don't want to share.

Thanks.. but I am seeing my friends/contacts birthday on 2 calendar now :\
I wonder how 'my calender' got my contacts birthday while I always sync to my google calender.
Any reason why? thanks again...
OP, where do you see the My Calendar? I'm on JM2 also but don't seem to see a second calendar.
Anyone know if there is a way to prevent syncing the calendar to the cloud?
if you go in the normal calendar app and in the settings where you can choose your calendar to be displayed you will see google calendar and my calendar
That's what I have
And on my phone , my calendar has 3 times each birthday which makes 4 times with google and 5 times with my corporate calendar
I can tel you that I won't miss any calendar now
As for my calendar, I have synced with Kies so I guess it's the reason for 1 occurence. Then I can see that there is one coming from Facebook ( even there is a also a dedicated facebook calendar which could give me a 6th birthday )
It's a little bit a mess
EDIT : ok so I looked at my contact anmd I can see that there is 3 linked account : corporate account, facebook account and the "my phone" account
So my calendar is goignt to take the birthday from your contact. If you have your contact coming from google and you disaply my calendar and google calendar you will see twice the birthday.
That's kind of stupid
It is messy all right. Thanks for your reply.

[Q] Contacts annoyances (with GMail)

Hi,
I'm a bit annoyed by the way the Galaxy S works with Contacts:
All contacts are synced to Gmail instead of My Contacts
Gmail Groups are not synced, all Gmail contacts are in one group
No easy way to convert phone contacts to Google contacts or to merge contacts into a google contact
Essentially, I want to use GMail exclusively to manage contacts and have all of them synced between GMail and the phone.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to achieve this, or maybe there is a better Contacts app out there?
This is not SGS issue, but the Android platform has been designed in the way that it's cloud computing centralised, in this case, Android phone is just the "client", you still need to maintain your contact in Gmail (web).
I tried delete a GMail contact in the phone, but that action will not delete the Gmail contact in Gmail server, sadly.
I've searched for solutions and found that the first two issues are solved on some phones, but that the Samsung Galaxy does not have the option to change the sync behaviour.
I want to maintain my contacts in GMail, but the problem is that the phone does not respect the GMail groups and it syncs "All contact", which means everyone I ever sent a mail. It should sync "My contacts", which only contains Contacts I created in GMail.
I hoped that there is maybe an alternative contacts app that does what I want.

I was also annoyed by that fact. But fortunately you can select to display only contacts with phone numbers associated in the contacts
application.
Just hit menu button while showing the list of contacts -> Display options -> only contacts with phones.
This at least solved my major issue with the google synching. Nice: typeahead in the gmail app still works for all people you ever sent a mail.

I have tried Contacts Evolved in the Market. It is a littly buggy, not even sure if it is actively supported. But it does display Gmail contact groups, segregated in tabs.
The actual syncing is still being done by the brain dead Samsung Contacts app, which cannot be uninstalled. It apparently does download the groups data element from Gmail contacts, but fails to do anything with it.
When I tried jp3 2.2 firmware the google groups showed, looks like it will be fixed in the 2.2 update.
Thanks for the answers. Displaying only contacts with phone numbers helps, and if the group thing is fixed in Froyo, thats alright for me.
Now I only need to convert my phone contacts to Google contacts, there should be an easy options like Phone to SIM and vice versa, but I could not find it. Looks like I may have to do it by hand.
This is like the only bad thing for me. Do more people confirm that it is fixed in Froyo?

Google Apps Calendar & Contact problem

Hi All
I make quite a lot of use of the contacts and calendars on my Z but today I noticed something a little odd.
On my Google apps account I have subscribed to the Contacts Birthday & Events Calendar, which seemed to have worked fine, the contacts I had with birthdays were added to the calendar on the computer and sync'd to the phone fine too.
The other day I added a few more birthday dates to various contacts on my phone, and thought nothing of it.
I just checked my calendar and noticed that none of the ones I had updated were added to my calendar. I decided to have a look on the computer, and sure enough the birthdays were in the calendar on google calendar, but no amount of syncing on the phone makes them show up on the phone.
I have tried deleting the birthday on the contact on the phone and re adding in on google contacts and still it doesn't appear on the phone.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Birthdays don't sync in proper calendar

Coming from my Galaxy Nexus, I had a calendar in my Google Account, where all the birthdays of friends are stored. You simply add them in Contacts and they get synced with a different color as its a different calendar.
Now with the G2 I have the problem, that all old contacts are synced in that birthday calendar. They show up in the calendar widget. But new ones go automatically into the main calendar of my Google account, thus creating a mess.
Under Calendar Settings, all calendars are ticked and should sync accordingly.
But under Contacts, when creating a new birthday for a contact, I found that the main calendar is chosen by default. If I click on the setting to which calendar to add the birthday, it only shows the main calendar and Create new. No option to choose the birthday calendar, which should be there and which is synced as well. Does anyone has a similar problem?
