[TWEAK] SGT 7.7 Battery Calibration [Fuel Gauge Reset] - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Battery Calibration [Fuel Gauge Reset]
If you are having incorrect battery SCALING issues, this will reset your device battery % to scale correctly to the available mV.
After flashing kernels and ROMs 100's (possibly 1000) of times on this device, I had an issue where my tab would not display 'actual/real' battery percentage correctly.
My tab would discharge to approx 30-35% then drop to around 10-11% almost instantaneously, sometimes shutting off if I wasn't paying close attention !
Similar to the SGS2, resetting battery stats doesn't work and nothing to do with it anyway, it just resets the reporting in device settings/battery. Battery % reporting calibration didn't help either.
There are apps available for SGS2 to reset the fuel gauge, but don't actually work for our device because of the file name & location is different. Also, the SGS2 has the advantage of being able to remove the battery (easily) and leaving out for approx 180 sec, apparently giving the same affect of reset.
I got he idea from this thread : Questions about "Fuel-Gauge chip" and how it works & recognised developer entropy512. After some digging during my SkyHigh kernel development, I found the correct directory for my device and gave it a try........
DISCLAIMER : The below reset method has been successfully tested on my P6810 ICS 4.0.4 running SkyHigh kernel ! MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU, so NANDROID first !
REQUIREMENTS :
1. SGT 7.7
2. Rooted firmware and SuperSU / Superuser app installed
3. Android Terminal Emulator app installed & granted SU access
4. Existing directory : /sys/class/power_supply/battery/fg_reset_cap
FUEL GAUGE CHIP RESET & BATTERY % "REPORTING" CALIBRATION
Method :
1. Open Android Terminal Emulator app
2. Type & enter
Code:
su
echo "1" > /sys/class/power_supply/battery/fg_reset_cap

}
3. Reboot device
4. Battery % "reporting" calibration (digital)
a) Deplete battery to 5-10% (NOT ZERO)
b) Charge UNINTERUPTED until FULL (don't touch)
c) Unplug and then use normally. Device should then re-calibrate itself5. Repeat Step 4 (ONLY IF NEEDED)
RESEARCH NOTES & RECOMMENDATIONS
* Carry out Step 4 once in every 30 charge cycles to keep Battery % "reporting" (digital) calibrated
* Continual deep discharge will shorten battery life
* Don't let the battery discharge completely : potential to damage the battery and/or the battery fall "asleep" (internal safety circuit opens) with the charger then unable to service the battery.
Screenshots below after fuel gauge reset. You can see the immediate drop from 87 -> 70% to align correctly with the approx available mV.
This obviously worked for me, no promises, but hopefully it helps some of you too.

May have to try this. I have noticed that I'm starting to see this more in my tab but I haven't flashed or kernel'd near that many times. I have been running cm9 for over a year now. I have been using the nema battery calibrate tool though.
It's good to know there is another step to try, I was about ready to order tools and an OEM battery and make a swap.

If your circumstances warrant it, yeah, give it a try.
Forget the app though (edit: are useless for our device), just follow the steps and hopefully you'll see a difference.

As you can see, without the > sign. and showing a different path. I wanted to know exactly how to perform it.
Could anyone help me, please?

As Post #1 states, you need to check your device has the directory/file you want to write to. Use a root type file explorer for that. I can't comment on your device, because this guide is for a SGT-7.7, but suggest to use the same format and method as in the guide. As always, nandroid first.
Best of luck.

No. I've never owned or used your device model.
Just search for a similar directory. It will be there. Could also try and search with root type file explorer for the file name.

I've searched the xda and also on internet.I didn't find the directory.
so I searched within my device.i found some directories but I didn't find the file you mentioned.
I attached my directory listing under "sys/class/power_supply/"

Try using the inbuilt search function of a root type file explorer. Search the whole device for the file name.
Other than that, don't know.

3 Step Battery Method

What prompted me to write this 3 Step guide?
Well having read about the threds for Samsung Galaxy S2 it became evident that many users are becomming obsessed by battery life!! Fine tuning this setting bumpin it up a notch, turning it down a tad, installing this that and the other. Uninstalling this that and the other. Would not suprise me to find that pointing your Galaxy S2 24.6 degrees east whilst humming brittney spears hit me baby one more time three times a day IMPROVES BATTERY BY 4.8% especially when its a full moon.
Good luck to all the battery worshippers out there!!! Whatever method you employ, to each their own!!! Plus you no doubt get hours of pleasure from your never ending quest. Who knows one day we may come on XDA and find the following:
I tweaked my settings and last re-charged my battery 6 weeks back been making 2hrs of calls each day, had games running for at least 3 hours and searched the internet as required still on 67% battery!!!
P.S Just fed up of humming hit me baby one more time!!!!!
Advantages of my 3 Step Battery Method?
1. Once the method is maintained no messing about changing settings on your Galaxy S2.
2. No swapping this changing that or constant monitoring
3. With moderate phone use, your phone will remain charged perpetually!
4. Will not harm your phone
5. No humming hit me baby one more time
6. More time to enjoy your amazing Galaxy S2
The 3 Step Battery Method (NOOB FRIENDLY GUIDE)
Step 1. Last thing at night find that thing on your wall! whats it called emm emmmm emmmmmmm Thats it a plug socket. Plug your Galaxy S2 charger into the plug socket then (this is important) switch the socket on!!! then plug the other end into your phone. Then go to sleep.
Step 2. When you wake up unplug the Galaxy S2 and charger.
Step 3. Repete step 1.
Hope you all enjoyed this guide and found it usefull!! If you did hit the thanks button and keep smiling!!!!
Enjoy your Galaxy S2 Tiz Cool 4 Katz
WOW Suprisingly simple method, I always wanted to know that thing was, I think you called it a "charger" (I may have pronounced that wrong).
I will try out this method and post back with my in depth findings. (or not)
P.S Nice one.
I've also found that you can MASSIVELY extend battery life by leaving the phone turned off, although there seems to be a bug with the firmware as it won't receive calls in this state.
Cool pronouncing

What if I used my phone heavily and the battery life is depleted in the evening or at night? Also find that thing on the wall? Lol~
After painstakingly racking my brains over the "turning phone off" method not recieving calls i have finally designed a hard mod to rectify this.
I have destroyed 8 phones, drew blood from my fingers and been divorced due to the hours i have spent on this project....so donations will be gratefully accepted.
Step 1: purchase an original nokia from ebay or if you have one lying around even better.
Step 2: now this gets complecated, you may want to get an adult to help you with thia if you dont feel confident......turn off galaxy 2, peel off the back of the galaxy 2, remove battery (do NOT put battery in mouth) then remove sim card.
Step 3: insert sim card in old nokia (check instructions for phone or take to a phone repair shop if you dont feel you can do this yourself).
Now for the amazing part, turn the nokia on, use your house phone to ring your number. If you have done this correctly, you will notice you are recieving calls even though your samsung is "turned off"
Hope this helps

[GUIDE] HOW-TO Properly Evaluate Battery Life and Provide Useful Reports

I was talking to DoomLord about the infamous battery drain hunt and we got to discussing about ways to pinpoint the issue.
At some point, I mentioned an app that I swear by, BetterBatteryStats, by chamomix.
So, DoomLord encouraged me to start this thread to provide info about how to effectively use this app to accurately locate causes of battery drain issue.
This is very important for users who want to evaluate kernels' performance on that department, but it doesn't stop there.
You can use this app to see if any application you installed is acting up and keeping your phone awake, for example.
Before proceeding with this guide, I have to mention that BetterBatteryStats is given away for FREE for all XDA users (do not redistribute though) and there is also a paid version on the Market for people who wish to support the developer. I bought this app and I am sure that if you read this guide, by the end, you are going to want to do the same! Thanks chamomix!
Step 1:
Download the app from this post for free, or buy it from the Market.
Step 2:
So, what is all these???
Don't panic! First, let's set it up in a way that it'll make things less complicated.
Launch the app and hit the Menu button, then select Preferences.
DISPLAY:
Make sure Filter stats is checked.
Hide time since stat begin should be unchecked.
Hide graph bars also unchecked.
DEFAULTS:
Default stat: It can be anything. This is what you will first see when you launch the app. I have set it to Other, so I can take a quick glance at how long the phone was asleep and how long the screen was on everytime I open the app.
Default stat type: Better set it to Since charged. Again, this is just what you will see first. You can navigate through all the other stat and display times later.
WAKELOCK:
Wakelock pct of: Choose % of time awake minus time with screen on. This is VERY important. When a developer asks for reports on wakelocks, all users should use the same option, otherwise the stats vary and thus can be misleading and not helpful.
All the other settings are unimportant, tune them as you wish.

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 3:
Now what?
Now you have all the info you need about where did your battery go right there in front of you! I am going to help you interpret it.
We will use my phone usage as an example.
This is what I see when I launch the app:
So, my battery is at 97%, it was charged to 100% 21 minutes ago, it was awake for 20 minutes and the screen was on for 8 minutes.
That means that my phone was not sleeping even thought the screen was off for (20 - 8 =) 12 minutes.
Interesting...
Let's press the first dropdown menu and select Partial Wakelocks to figure it out.
Here's what I see:
Browser takes the first place with 2 minutes wakelock, then my Gmail sync with 1 minute and the rest with a lot less.
So, yeah, I left my browser on loading a webpage and the screen switched off.
Up to this point, we got a good idea of what app or process may be a battery drainer.
Moving on, we will investigate more advanced aspects of battery drain, useful for kernel testing and not only.
Step 4:
Is that all???
Oh no, hardly. You can see much more with this app.
Let's select Process from the first dropdown menu to see which processes used CPU power and when.
Here's what I see:
Notice how the bars can have 2 different colors.
Blue part of the bar means that the app/process used CPU power while the screen was on.
Red part of the bar means that the app/process used CPU power while the screen was off.
akmd8975 is the G-sensor (wherever you see akmd means the G-sensor), so for some reason it's using more processing power than it should. I am currently testing a new kernel, so I must inform the creator about it because this is the first time I see this in my stats.
(And that, my friends, is an example of how you should use all these for the general good. )
mediaserver is the process that imports all your media files to the gallery, usually it shows high usage after reboot, but after a while, it fades out (because there's a check for new media files upon every boot).
Now let's choose Kernel Wakelocks from the dropdown menu to see even more.
This is something you should leave to the kernel developer to interpret.
Most of these things are gibberish for us average users but can be VERY helpful to devs.
(I can safely say that the 3 first entries are related to charging and they only appear while you are charging the phone and shortly after. No need to get into deeper.)
Now let's take a look into the Alarms.
What are Alarms?
In layman's terms, Alarms in the Android system are those intents that wake up the phone in intervals or at a specific time. I am sure you can think of many apps that do that. Let's see which apps do that on my phone.
Hit Menu -> More -> Alarms
com.google.android.gsf is Google Apps Framework (your Gmail account, and related syncs and services).
android is the Android System itself which seems to be waking up my phone way too often (104 times in 20 minutes ). One more thing I should discuss with the kernel developer.
Step 5
I get it now! How can I gather all this info into one place?
By hitting menu button, selecting More -> Dump to File.
It will create a txt file on /sdcard named BetterBatteryStats-xxxx-xx-xx-xxxxxxx.txt (where the xxxxx indicate the date and time).
And the file will look somewhat like this when opened:
So, be it an app, a kernel or a ROM you are testing, you need this app!!!
As a co-creator of TEAM ROM for the X10, I have to tell you, I love all our users for their support, but sometimes I just want to scream when I see a post like this:
my battery drains fast why???
Click to collapse
You see what the problem with this post is?
I CAN'T POSSIBLY KNOW WHY. It could be SO many things.
That's where BetterBatteryStats comes to the rescue!
Use it! You will help yourself and your beloved developers beyond words!
If you feel all this is "too complicated" for you and you don't want to bother, please consider how many complicated things developers are doing for you for free. You owe them at least decent reports. Am I right or am I right?
PS: If you liked this guide, don't forget to check another one about How to Report Force Closes in an App or ROM by PvyParts.

And about the BetterBatteryStats, I bought the Market version, and is a great app.
Highly recommended.
wow thanks iridaki for the Guide with this i will try to help Doomlord,FXP team to report about their kernel so they would come up with the perfect kernel for us
thanks again iridaki ^_^
Thanks for your kind words.
Apparently according to XDA rules, this thread belongs to General section, among threads such as "Help I am a noob" and "Is it Sunday today?" but because Doomlord (who has released a lot of V16 test kernels and needs our help to solve battery issues) as well as other kernel/ROM/app developers could benefit if us users followed this tutorial for reporting, please bookmark this thread and link to it in the development section whenever you see fit. For example when someone asks about how to check which apps drain their battery.
Thanks a lot!

We are testing new versions of Doomkernel, trying to make it as battery efficient as the stock kernel. At the moment I don't think you will get better battery time by replacing the stock kernel, but if you want to overclock your phone I can highly recommend Doomkernel.

No point in wiping battery stats.

It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you.
It has no impact on your battery life.
Deleting it is not going to do anything to make your more device more fantastic and wonderful... well, unless you have some deep hatred for seeing anything shown in the battery usage UI. And anyway, it is reset every time you unplug from power with a relatively full charge (thus why the battery usage UI data resets at that point), so this would be a much easier way to make it go away.

Yup, I did after reading her post. All the battery stats are used for is to show which apps have been using your battery under Battery Usage.
That's a nice find. So all these while it was just a placebo :|
I laugh at everyone who used all these things and said it worked lol. I never had any luck erasing or using any battery calibration app so I figured it made no difference and when this article hit a few days ago it just confirmed it for me

so..
when i rebooted manually yesterday with 8% battery left and booted up with 53% battery, you want me to believe that theres no reason to delete my batterystats.bin? well i deleted it and rebooted again, booted up at 8%. in a perfect world there might not be any reasons, but ever since my first android(g1 oct 2008) and every android device ive owned since, the batterystats.bin file has always lost accuracy with a short amount of time. and it seems that deleting the file and rebooting has been the only thing to make it accurate again.

This isn't my first Android phone (I've had a Nexus One, HTC EVO, Epic 4G, and some crappy Motorola) and I've never touched the battery stats. Never noticed any issues because of it.

keep an eye on your battery levels the next few times you reboot or flash something. and check out this thread from today, the op has an issue, sound familiar? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449470
How many times have reps for companies given incorrect information? In the asus transformer prime forum there is a thread where an Asus customer service person said ics wasn't released for the prime, yet everyone is getting the ota for it.
I'm of the "I've owned more than 1 android phone and a battery calibration has never done anything" persuasion. It just never has. Users who get great battery life either have great signals or don't use their phone. Owning multiple chargers/batteries is the best way to ensure your phone has juice.

I agree. I don't think anyone states it actually "improves" battery life, it just helps ur phone be as accurate as possible so you don't has inconsistent battery levels. There's no way any fellow flash addicts have not experienced battery level inconsistencies after flashing roms. It happens to me all the time
Take at look at the steep drop in the graph. I'm pretty sure wiping battery stats is purely meant to correct that issue as opposed to actually increasing battery life

As she noted, the battery stats file has NOTHING to do with your battery level or percentage. Now, its possible that you're right and she's wrong but I tend to believe the person that has actually helped DEVELOP Android versus personal anecdotes and intuitions.

It is not a rep...it is a real engineer at Google Android, never saw the google+ link?
yep, quite believe it...never....ever wiped stats.
Fully charging the phone - firstly powered on, then off a few times, sorts the calibration.
And no...you don't damage the battery by fully charging powered on and off - they've made these batteries more intelligent than their gullible owners.

Careful battery status inaccurate %

Guys I noticed that when checking with *#0228# the battery status and you do a quick start the battery percentage drops radically 10-30% depends of the use of your phone. I remembered that I have read somewhere about the 5% left of the charge of the battery is left when a phone shuts down so battery doesn't get destroyed. Not sure if it is true or not.
But as I see it the percentage of battery left on notification bar isn't accurate.
Please check it on your phone and post if it happens to other phones. And if there is some more tech based guys outthere, to explain give a solution or a helpfully trick.

I think even though it might not be accurate, its will always be inaccurate the same surely, so eventually you'll learn how it reacts, so it does give you an idea of what's left.

If it was just few % I would not mind on my last quick start it dropped from 46% to 18% the next one did go to 26% then 23% and back to 26%

Maybe your battery stats have gone another wrong in the upgrade, I've only done on charge so far, so haven't really noticed any difference in battery life from gb so far.

What do you mean by "quick start"? - it's a known and fairly well documented aspect of our fuel gauge chip that heavy load immediately following a reset (such as rebooting) will cause it to report artificially low.

Use the dialer and give the code *#0228# it pops the battery information on the bottom is a button it says on it QUICK START on GB it would make a quick restart it think (black screen for 5-7 secs) now it only changes the block value of the battery and the charged percentage.

Doesnt come as a surprise, the indicator is not accurate as for other devices too.
AFAIK battery caliberation is a complicated process for which one may need kernels with special features.
its not something that can be done by an app from the market....

braxos,
did you just change ROM and/or Kernel ?
If yes, you would need to do a few cycles of charge-discharge, and clean the battery status.
I only experience like that when I just changing kernel (different kernel, not upgrade), and changing different ROM (different ROM also, not upgrade).
Otherwise, when the ROM and kernel stabilized alrd, I have never experienced such things.

Read the MAX17040 datasheet. Particularly the part about the assumptions the chip makes when starting - if those assumptions don't hold true, it'll read inaccurately for a while.
We have a MAX17042 but in our phone it's used identically to the older 17040.
Nothing new, it's the same deal as the "battery estimate drops artificially on a reboot" thing.
The battery protection circuit in the pack is not based on SoC estimate, it's based purely on voltage, so will always shut the phone off before damage occurs.

No, you don't need to do that. That only applies to "coulomb counter" type fuel gauges - which ours is not.
Wait 1-2 hours and do nothing but use your phone normally - that's it. Charge it if you want, discharge it, whatever...

Entropy,
I was on rooted stock rom and Notecore kernel (v11.5). I had a very good battery with no deep sleep issues and good 'On screen battery' time.
I flashed a new kernen (v12.0 I believe) & started experiencing battery drain issues. Still Deep sleep is very fine. But on screen battery drain is huge (>25%/hr).
Since then I have altered between Notecore and Speed mod kernels, but the issue persists. I have almost tried very method suggested in XDA to callibrate battery but no improvement seen. I am worried whether my battery is aged, but its only 9 months old.

nice, did you try cleaning before flashing the kernel, like jbroidscript?
Not all kernel versions are very good for battery life.
Did you also check if your battery is getting full charge? with android sensor you can see current charge left.
Screen on drain is usually around 25% unless playing games then its more. Note only is capable of 3-4 hours screen time with no games, with games its less.
just a few tips.

Thanks baz77.
Can you please guide me to correct Jbdroid script. The one i foound in XDA is put by JBlank and many senior members are calling it useless.
Battery charging is fine. Atleast all teh tools like Battery monitor widget, inbuilt, Badass monitor and as suggested androsensor are giving the same % readings and informs battery health to be good.
But its not a placebo effect. I can really battery draining nothing like before.

I guess the only way for you to find out, is take out the battery and compare it to a real genuine samsung battery.
In software this shouldn't be possible.
Although this thread is damn old: Simply delete batterystats.bin OR turn off the phone and let it charge to 100% when off. This also happens when you use an extended battery.
I too tried it before quick start the battery level was 56% and after quick start battery level dropped quickly to 26%

Android System issue?

ive been looking all around, with no solution so far, but the issue im having is that the battery stats show my phones having android system at 35% most of the time and android OS following it around 15-20%
is this an issue with marshmallow or samsung? I havent even rooted the phone, its simple the way it was since first turning it on.
I installed package disabler and took out knox and other things, but still no change...so im a bit lost

I initially had this issue as well. I got it down to under 20% by doing the following:
1. No diagnostic reporting to Samsung
2. No feedback/reporting to Google
3. Turn off sync & turn it on manually only when needed (I use a macro app to automate this, called MacroDroid)

Mine is doing the same thing. Was pretty pumped about the big battery but with that drain it's not any better than any other battery. Sometimes doesn't even last thw whole day. I'm not a heavy user either.

Where can I find setting 1 and 2?
Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk
Remember that all the battery usage percentages MUST add up to 100%. The less other apps and processes are using battery, the higher the percentage used by Android system and the OS is going to be. If you let your phone sit unused for 3 or 4 days, those two things would probably total 70 or 80%, just because nothing else is using battery.
Don't worry about the percentage system is using. Look at your overall battery life. If that's good, then don't sweat the small stuff.

For # 2, Settings / Applications. Scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Google. Then 3 dot menu / Usage and diagnostics. Make sure it's off.
Not sure about # 1
Also having the same issues here. Experienced Android user, disabled quite a few apps, non rooted. Let's figure this out guys!

It's not mentioned explicitly in the changelog. But AT&T GS7E users have reported battery life improvements, just like the T-Mobile guys.
My GS6E received the April update yesterday & Android System doesn't even show up anymore in battery stats. Battery life improved.

Are you guys having Android System battery issues still?
To pinpoint which service within Android System is causing the most wakelocks without Root, you can use this app (Wakelock Detector Lite) & adb to view the stats.
Here's the link to the Play Store app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector.noroot
After you install the app, go into Settings > Developer options & turn on USB Debugging.
Then connect your phone to your PC, open adb, and type:
adb devices
Then
adb tcpip 5555
Now you can view your wakelock stats without root!
My number one wakelock within Android System is GpsLocationProvider_ex. It prevents my phone from deep sleep & Doze.
The only workaround is to turn off GPS until needed.
Please share your findings.

I got much better results yesterday.
17 hrs off the charger & SOT of 4 hrs & 42 mins.
GpsLocationProvider_ex wakelock of only 3 mins & 51 seconds using the GPS+WiFi+Mobile location setting.
My settings:
-Firmware version PD3 (Sprint GS7E)
-auto brightness
-sync off
-Location = GPS+WiFi+Mobile
-WiFi & Mobile data always toggled on
-Bluetooth always on & connected to Gear S2 3G
-No power-saving mode
-Google Now & Now on Tap on
-Push apps running: Kakaotalk, Slice, Pushbullet
-140 apps installed
Before the refresh, this was the kind of crazy GPS wakelocks I was getting:
Finished yesterday with over 6 hrs of SOT.

Yes, those apps only refresh automatically when I open them which is how I like it. I don't like getting pestered with constant notifications. And I don't use Facebook.
I use macro apps to automatically turn on Sync when it's on the charger & shut off when taken off the charger.
