Nexus 4 Multiboot? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a multiboot method for the Nexus 4 yet? It's running up on a year since its release and I've yet to see one. And if there isn't, does anyone have a reason as to why?

Well it will limit the storage ALOT, the Nexus 4 has a bit too much partitions and since there is no external SD I would say fat chance.

Well, it still wouldn't hurt to have the actual method be there. I'd like it for trying out ROMs.

Is there any reason as for why you'd like to do this? This isn't like Linux and Windows where you have incompatible apps.
I think the easiest way to play with different ROMs is to create a Nandroid backup with either TWRP or Clockworkmod Recovery, backup your user apps with TiBu, and load a new ROM. Whenever you install a new ROM, create a new Nandroid backup, and you will be able to flip back and forth between ROMs easily.
Currently I have backups for both Android 4.3 stock/rooted and one for my latest tweaks in Paranoid Android 3.92. I probably won't go back to stock Android until Key Lime Pie comes out, but when it does, I'll backup my apps with TiBu, make another Nandroid of PA, restore my stock backup, update the app data with TiBu, and upgrade to Android 5. Quick and efficient with no data loss.

There are those ROMs out there that, with a majority being compatible with the apps, some aren't or are vastly different in their operation on the device. Ubuntu and MIUI being examples of incompatible apps and a completely different firmware and closed source kernel, respectively. If you've heard news of the Ubuntu Edge, you'd see perfect reason for dual booting.

That is different though, the Ubuntu Edge has 128GB of internal storage which is used for dual booting and speed so you can install many apps on Android and Ubuntu.
The 16GB variant of the Nexus 4 is not even half way at all.
MIUI runs android with a skin and Ubuntu uses CyanogenMod firmware and a Android kernel so I am pretty sure that both use Android.

I love it on my 16gb o.g. nexus 7 I have Ubuntu and pa and rasbean... My n4 is a 16 as well... It would be nice... Maybe when its made for the new n7
Sent 4rm my Nexus 7 FLO... Only thing missing is O.G. N7's development...

That's what I'm thinking. I mean, the N7 is essentially a giant N4.

Backup apps before rooting?

Hey, so I dislike how the Nexus 7 started to lag after the update and plan to go root with custom ROM and get some of that root goodness. On my phone I would use titanium backup, but my tablet isn't rooted yet so that's a no go.
I just want to keep my apps and the data before jumping in. I don't want to start over in world of goo!
Thanks in advanced.

You can root your stock rom before flashing a new one, in fact, it's a prerequisite. After rooting, backup using titanium backup

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
Use Carbon. It's made by the same guy as CWM and doesn't require root. Be sure to move the backups to your computer though because rooting will require you to unlock the boot loader which will wipe the device clean.

Oh wow, I wasn't aware of Carbon. That's awesome.
By the way, what ROMs do you recommend as being the most stable and overall best in your opinion?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I've used CyanogenMod, AOKP, and Paranoid Android. Right now I'm using CM because I feel it is much closer to stock with a few tweaks and I have gotten a little better battery life out of it. I also use Matr1x kernel. I recommend trying different ROMs and kernels out and see which combination gives you what you're looking for.

Q Native Linux Installer

If I use the native Linux installer to put Ubuntu on my new n7 will i lose android permanently or can I revert back to android if I don't like it?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
You can revert back. It's explained on their site (Ubuntu's Wiki for the Nexus 7 Installer).

Oh OK. I'm not a total noob but am with this device. Hmmmm now I wonder if can I restore a backup to revert back...

I don't see why not. I'd backup your ROM, then copy your backup to your computer (or entire internal sd), install Ubuntu for N7. To revert, reflash factory images and re-root, flash recovery, wipe and restore backup.
I'm not sure if it wipes out your recovery or not, I am assuming it does.

Sounds like a plan thanks for the help.

Looks like fun running this install. I'll let you know how it goes. Seems the Linux is a little buggy with the n7. I'm interested in how cinnamon will run

Ubuntu Touch

Is anyone else working on it besides myself?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
I am, but I am trying to port it to my thunderbolt and my Droid x. It is kinda impossible, I have tried to install it because I made the flash able boot img, etc, but I get an error 7. Meaning that I just need to fix the update script but I am too lazy to do it right now. We can work together if u want.
I'll see if i have any free time. Doesnt ubuntu come with its own kernel?

No, I checked the phablet zip ( the generic one that is being used on android phone running Ubuntu) and it doesn't include the kernel. The phablet zip is the system (OS) only. The rest has to be flashed separately, phones that have gotten the port flash the libs, kernel, etcetera. This has to be done by us the consumers. I am trying to make a team because I have a Droid x and a thunderbolt and if I can form a team it would benefit everyone.

I'm not a dev but I'll definitely take a look at it. It;s not like this old X is getting any use anyways
If anyone need a guinea pig, I got two droid xs to try stuff on that aren't daily used.

I'd love to get the new ubuntu working on my DX. I have all the install files for my nexus 7 but haven't done it yet.
I have a feeling for the DX it won't be possible because of the locked down nature of our system/bootloader. 2nd-init is fine and good for "close to stable" ICS roms but I highly doubt we'd get a good stable running ubuntu on it.
I've been messing around with it, it will be buggy as hell but thats the nature of the X.

Dual boot on Nexus 4

I want to try the Dev preview of Ubuntu Phone OS but I don't want to flash over Jelly Bean. Is it possible in any way to dual boot?

Hi,
No... (not yet?).

As far as I know there is only these two threads about dual-boot...
You can't dual boot but if your rooted you can make a nandroid backup using cwm twrp recovery. People have confirmed that when you restore the nandroid after flashing Ubuntu everything works fine

I'll just buy a used Galaxy Nexus to try Ubuntu Phone OS I'm pretty happy with CyanogenMod currently

When one boots into recovery isn't that another os? It's seems like we have duel boot, booting between the two. It wouldn't be worth sacrificing recovery but it would be neat to reboot into another os instead.

Yes that would be neat. Remove recovery for another full OS. It might be possible idk you would have to do a lot of mods but it just might work

As far as i know, recovery is another partition. Also if by some chance this were possible, dont you ever want to flash anything else again ?

Can't you flash directly via ADB without recovery if you go into fastboot?

Yes I would, like I said it would be a sacrifice. I would do it in a heartbeat if I could flash roms in bootloader.
Oh does goo manager use my recovery to update my rom?

When I flashed Ubuntu I just made a nandroid, flashed the two zips and played with it for about 10 minutes and then restored the backup

Missing progress

Hi everyone. Dunno if anyone else has the same problem, but i took a quick look and didn't find anything so I'll just go on. I have a nexus 4 running rasbean jelly 4.2.2. Rom with Matr1x kernel and for some time now i have a problem, mainly after rebooting my phone. Most applications that track progress like games and their saves , chrome and its tabs, etc start like it's the first time running them. Any idea what might be going wrong? Thanks in advance.

how much internal storage space do you have left? are you using any root apps that clear data?
I have 3.5 gb left internal storage and i have clean master installed but haven't used it for months.

uninstall it. dirty flash your build of rasbean(and gapps) without wiping anything. i think this will take care of your issue.
Isn't dirty flash dangerous?
I thought maybe upgrade into 4.3 but not sure if worth the trouble.

dirty flashing isnt dangerous. its the only way i flash(just make a nandroid backup just in case)! i even dirty flashed rasbean 4.3 over rasbean 4.2.2 when rasbean 4.3 just hit. but yea, it might be time to upgrade to 4.3 too
when updating the same rom, dirty flash. when trying a new different rom, then wipe data.
Ok i think I'll try this and hopefully problem will be solved too. Thanks for help mate.
