●●● [NEW][HOW TO] ●●● Google's Android Device Manager / Security ●●●
From Google...
"Have you ever lost your phone in between the couch cushions or forgot it in a restaurant? Or maybe searching for your phone before you rush out the door is part of your morning routine? Let the new Android Device Manager help you out! It's one of a few simple features you can use to keep your device—and the data you store inside—safe and secure.
Locate and ring your misplaced device
If you ended up dropping your phone between those couch cushions, Android Device Manager lets you quickly ring your phone at maximum volume so you can find it, even if it's been silenced. And in the event that your phone or tablet is out of earshot (say, at that restaurant you left it at last night), you can locate it on a map in real time.

Protecting your personal information and data
While losing your phone can be stressful, Android Device Manager can help you keep your data from ending up in the wrong hands. If your phone can’t be recovered, or has been stolen, you can quickly and securely erase all of the data on your device.
Availability and getting started
This service is now available on devices running Android 2.2 or above; to use it, you also will need to be signed into your Google Account. There will also be an Android app to allow you to easily find and manage your devices. Stay tuned!"
How to start using
*note: This is not a standalone app. Google is pushing the update in batches so you may not have access to it yet.
1. Navigate to Settings > Security > Device Administrators and check the box Android Device Manager and hit activate
2. Check to see if access to Android Device Manager is in your Google Settings application.
3. Go here on your computer's web browser and test it.
If you don't see access to it in your Google Settings app, its likely that the feature is not yet available to you.

Cool. I hope this doesn't use any battery.

Using Cerberus app already. Has more functionality than this.

Note for sense devices, Just go to settings and then security and so forth, more just brings you to network information. (I'm assuming there is a difference on a Google edition phone)

I have all activated, but the web doesn't connect with my phone . It can not get the location or ring the phone. (Galaxy Nexus 4.3 all stock)

Thank you. Works well.
I activated it under Settings > Security > Device Administrators, but I didn't see ADM in Google Settings.
Was still able to find it at https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager
HTC One using GE 4.3 RUU

I tried it and it works. The phone ring doesn't work if you disable wifi and/or mobile data. Does anyone know if it will wipe an external sd card?

Quick access to ADM is now available on the Play Store website, under the settings button:

I keep my wifi and mobile network location setting off usually to save battery. Do I need to have this on to use ADM? Can I turn it on remotely?

Yeah you can turn it on remotely. Just setup a Tasker profile to turn on whats necessary by sending a specific text to your phone. That's what i've did. :good:

I was able to download a ADM and I activated it, but when I go to the website to locate it, it says location unavailable. The ring won't work either, haven't tried the erase button

From what I understand it is still rolling out so some devices aren't able to be located just yet.

I set mine up but every time I try to get its location from the website it tells me location is unavailable. I also tried ringing it and it didn't work. I triple checked all my settings and everything seemed ok

Same here. Have a Galaxy S3 (LiquidSmooth Rom incase that makes a difference). Have ADM checked as my device admin, have it in my Google Settings, and it still can't be located or rung from the site. Says "Location Unavailable. Last used August 3, 2013". That date doesn't make much sense to me....

I tried it and had the same results as others, not found sending ring didn't work etc after allowing it. So I restarted the phone and now it all works perfectly.
Thanks for the tip

Same issue :-\

I've checked the android device manager in settings..

To activate this service
First Go here
http://samsungdive.com
and register your account(free) - skip this if you have already samsung account.
- On device add samsung account.
- then from device , setting -seciruty- Find My mobile
1.Remote control - enter credential and enable it.
2.check SIM card change alert
3.click on alert msg recipient - Now login with credential, you have register on above mentioned samsung site. - and add recipient mobile number (your other number / family number) on which you will get notification, if SIM will changed.
Now when you visit samsungdive.com and login, you will see your register device there, (see Image above)
Click on your device.
You will see this
Now you can track your mobile. It have all function which available with many costly applications on market like
-tracking on map (to check location)
-Ring mobile (to find device in nearby location)
-Forward msgs
-call logs
-wipe out device etc
This is not just useful when you lost device, but many times i found it useful
-If you forget lock screen password
-If you want to erase data remotely (say your screen is not working)
-You forget device at home/office and want to know call logs OR want to forward Call/SMS
thanks for the useful links as always doctor
Samsung dive is useful. But if your serious about security. Than there is no better than cerberus. It has some awesome features. Like record video or audio when you have lost your phone. From memory you get a 7 or 14 day trial. Worth doing to view the features.
I have tasker put a pin code on when I exit home or work wifi. When pin code is entered incorrectly cerberus takes photo and emails.

yes cerberus is feature rich and i am also having it. But this is for ppl who can't use google play to purchase.
Another benifit of using samsung service
-You can unlock screen locked with password
-Call/SMS forward
Major drawback of samsung service
It won't be helpful if data is wiped, in case of cerberus, if you have pushed cerberus to System ROM, it still remain protected from wiping
looks nice.. but will this murder you battery like some of the other location based services? I noticed most of my partial wakelocks were caused by Maps or related location services.
I don't have observed any ill effect on battery as this is on demand service, activate location service only when you track device.

Yes i do what. To find the device works but the other thing!
Does anyone tried what happens after wiping phone from samsung dive? will we be able to track phone after that?
I think erasing phone is the first thing to do after losing it.(even if you need to steal another phone to use it's internet connection )
I didn't know about this.. working great. way to go sammy!
Ok, I tried that out. But one question, how can I turn it off again ??? Now that tracker icon comes up in the status bar. There is no disabling of that feature that I can see. Or what is it ?

[Q] N4 settings menu won't open

Hi,
My Nexus 4 is running completely stock 4.2.2, it's not even unlocked let alone rooted (first phone I've felt happy enough without root) and was running fine until yesterday when it ran out of storage space and gave me a warning. So i uninstalled a couple of games, hoping to free up a couple of gigs.
Now though, i can't get to the settings menu or any associated screen. I can toggle the quick settings from the pull down menu, but if try to enter the main settings menu it briefly flashes up and then closes. It's the same if i try to access settings through the launcher, and if i try to get to any settings menu via other means (ie. long press an icon in Nova and select 'app info' or 'uninstall') the associated menu again just flashes up and then vanishes within a split second as if I've pressed back straight away.
Nothing else seems out of the ordinary - apps update, i can get to the play store, apps run fine, just the settings menu.
Any ideas? I can't find anything similar searching here or elsewhere. I've obviously rebooted the phone but without access to the settings i have no idea what else i can change. I'd factory reset but I've not backed up a couple of apps and usb debugging is off so i can't use Carbon (for some reason it's always had problems keeping the initial enabling and needs plugging in regularly),and i can't use Titanium without root so i wanted to see if anyone had any bright ideas first
Perhaps there's a way to just reset the settings menu? I've no idea what it's process is, but some action similar to "clear app data" should reset it :/ Just brainstorming here.
if nothing helps do a factory reset. your apps will come back automatically through the play store when you log in.you'll loose your highscores but most apps are cloud driven anyway,

Sorry for the OT but is that a genuine quote in your sig?!
Anyway @OP I think factory resetting is probably your only viable solution here, it's a very odd issue and there's not much you can do to solve it without a settings menu.
You need to clear the data for settings. Install titanium backup and see if you can. You'll need to root it first though. Crap..I forgot forgot you said you arnt rooted.

Cheers for the suggestions, was hoping there would be a fix but I guess a factory reset in the morning it is.
Frustrating as this sort of thing really shouldn't be happening out of the blue from a stock phone - it's a fairly huge bug!
Ironic that I resisted rooting to ensure I kept the reliable and simple experience of the nexus, only for it to be what stopped me fixing it when it broke :-\
Won't make that mistake again!
This probably won't work but try opening your quick toggles then long pressing on wifi or bluetooth, that's supposed to take you to those individual settings. Then if you hit the icon in the top left you may be able to get back to the main settings.

Hey OP, did you figure it out yet? I just noticed that trebuchet launcher allows you to go into settings via a shortcut in the app launcher. Probably won't work, but hey. Try another launcher?
Yes cheers a factory reset wasn't needed in the end - I worked out the problem.
I've been using my sim with my n4 as well as my new HTC one and hot swapping between the two for a week or so. I also have avast installed on the n4 which has an option 'disable settings when no sim inserted' which I'd forgotten about.
I only thought of it because when I initially took the sim out I got an email saying 'warning unauthorised sim inserted, id: {null}' or similar.
It didn't work with my sim installed either but I logged into avast, turned that setting off and everything was back to normal. Turned the setting back on now (once the sim was in) as it's obviously going to be an absolute pain for thieves too!
I guess it's a problem with hot swapping the sim while avast was running, the switch didn't get triggered even when I reinserted it? Either way now it just means I turn the n4 off before removing the sim now!
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Haha, at least you now experienced first hand how secure your settings menu is.
Exactly what I was thinking! Nice it gave no clue why it was happening and if I didn't know the password for avast it would have made life very difficult as it also disabled usb debugging, so anyone who wanted to wipe the phone would have needed some serious android knowledge.

Thanks for posting this. Yesterday I downloaded and installed Device Manager on my N4 thinking that it was The solution for if my device was stolen. If I had not seen this thread, I would have continued thinking my device was covered from being raped of all my passwords and such. Man! Talk about a fasle sense of security. In my guess as long as ur device hasn't got a gps lock for the first time this feature will not be enabled. I activated this a few days ago. Although i used to have avast installed i was not bothered of this before. Just gave it a try and it didnt actually work for the first time except ring the device. I used google maps for just searching someplace and got a lock on my device by the gps. I checked android device manager later i found that the tab for erasing my device has been enabled. Give it a try I think that might help :good:

This did not work for me. Then today I was poking around in the settings and got it to work. I went into Applications in settings and then in the top right enabled system apps. I scrolled down to smart caller ID and clicked it. I went to permissions and enabled contacts.
Anyway an hour later I got a call from a family member from their home phone. I do not have this persons name saved in my phone. It said their first, last, and middle initial right on the screen. I was like wow it's working. So naturally I went into package disable pro and turned it off LOL. I tested it again with the same caller and this time it didn't show their caller ID, only their phone number. I tried to re enable the feature and have not been able to get it back since. If someone can try these steps and see how it works, maybe we can figure it out.
Kept messing with settings and it started working again. Rebooted and it went away.

Mine doesn't have that in applications. Not even after enabling system apps. Must be third party installed app you have there.
Okay use the app from the OP and search for "smart" and smart caller ID will show up. Click it and then create. Then on the home screen click the newly created shortcut and it should enable permissions for smart caller ID. Then try.
I've tried it multiple ways and I don't see a "smart caller" anything either. Total crap Verizon! Any way someone can extract it?

[Guide]How to use the Project Fi wifi assistant any carrier(Any recent nexus device)

Hey guys. Since this is my first thread, any help/instructions would be welcomed.
While messing around on my Nexus 5x I got a notification from Google Connectivity services telling me if I wanted my phone to auto-connect to open wifi hotspots automatically through a VPN(Virtual Private Network). If you don't know, a VPN sends your data encrypted through a Wi-Fi network. The data is then unencrypted by the VPN server, and is sent to the requested location. This is useful if you want to use an open network but don't want people to be able to spy on your browsing. After exploring a little, I found out how to set this up.
Requirements
A recent Nexus smartphone or tablet running android Nougat
The latest version of google connectivity services
Navigate to Settings>Google>Networking.
Enable wifi Assistant.
It's as simple as that. Whenever you come across an open network, your phone will automatically connect to it through a vpn.
Thanks
I was under the impression they opened up Google Connectivity Services beyond Project Fi users to all Nexus users, so do you really need to download this separately?

As Droid Life said, the feature is coming soon. Until its full release, this is the only way to access this otherwise Fi-only feature. I have no networking feature in my settings, and unless you do, I believe this is the only way to access this feature at the time of this post.

it only works if there are open networks that have not been connected to previously and do not require signing in.
Has anyone in the UK got this feature yet ? I'm stock rom, unbranded, unlocked phone all updated.
Not on my phone in the UK yet, but the feature is apparently rolling out as a server-side change. Could take up to a few weeks for it to get to everyone.
