[Q] Wipe before restore? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick query... when restoring to a previous ROM after trying out one and not liking it much, should I treat it as though I am installing a fresh ROM and do a full wipe before hand? Im using Philz Touch 5 CWM V6.0.3.4

You could try to do factory reset or to reflash 2.1 kdz file
My brother had same problem with bluetooth and i just pulled battery out of his phone and after that it worked :silly:
Factory reset erases every installed apps in the phone right?
that wouldn't be an option to me especially that it would just be a 'trial and error thing'
Guys please help!!

backup your apps + data with titanium backup, then wipe data/factory reset.
see if it works and restore your apps

alright, maybe that'll work but is there another way to solve this without doing the factory reset?

guess not. if you're on stock 2.1 (rooted) there's no way to change the system except flashing kdz, which means: factory reset

i'm using tejasdj12's ROM since a few weeks now and everything works good so far ( some bugs are there though..)
SDSL by miroslav_mm works good too .
if you want to stay with 2.1 i suggest eleganceswift.

Yep.
I use Philz too and like it a lot. It's a matter of needs and preference. They'll all flash roms, wipe data etc anyway.

[FYI] TWRP in Lollipop

This just FYI...
Kindly dont try taking full backup of Lollipop (Brazil Soak version ) using TWRP... It will cause bootloop.... you need to do factory reset to get back to your phone work...
Just a FYI...

Touchy, are we?
1. I don´t think I´m the smartest person in the world and that´s why I used the words "most likely".
2. You got better explanation, why others have no problem with TWPR backups? Besides, backup just creates a couple of big files - this can´t render your phone unbootable by itself.
2a. There are guides that tell you how to restore a Lollipop TWRP backup so that you can enjoy Lollipop on unsupported devices. Obviously backup worked for those people as well, so it´s not just Lemagex in post #6 for whom it works ...
I flashed a zip through TRWP and its works. But I didn't try to do a nandroid backup yet.
This also happened to me. I'm using TWRP 2.8.x i have a thread in the q&a section. Some said the 2.7 is working with lollipop but haven't tested yet.

Reflash ROM w/o wipe?

Let's say i'm using Pure Nexus ROM and want to reflash the same ROM without losing the data on my device, is that possible? I mean it's the same ROM so it should work without any problems, right? Wiping cache should be enough, or am I wrong??
Thank you
Yes that's absolutely possible.

Is it safe to upgrade to TWRP 3.0.2?

Hi there.
Is anyone here using TWRP 3.x? I'm still on 2.x, since I read of lots of problems with newer versions of the recovery on this device, but I'd like to upgrade now. Can anyone give me some feedback?
Thanks in advance
It works but as with multiple posts not with Aroma.
Sent from my SM-N930F using XDA-Developers mobile app
I see no reason to update if u have no issue on 2.x. sometimes upgrade is just a no go.

Try it.. It totally a new design You can revert back, if you don't like it.. By flashing the image through the new twrp itself.

If you're trying to downgrade, it means that you've flashed TWRP.
If you've flashed TWRP, it means that you already know how to flash a custom recovery.
If you already know how to flash a custom recovery, then this is EXACTLY the same thing. Just pick an older version of TWRP and flash it the exact same way you would flash any version of TWRP.
And if you don't even know how to do that, google is your friend.
