Wi-Fi hotspot problem with rooted MF3 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have 2 S4s, one that is running MDL and the other MF3, both rooted. I was able to install the hacked TetheringProvision.apk onto my MDL phone unlocking the Wi-Fi hotspot feature and it works perfectly. However, I am having problems installing it on my MF3 S4. I have the hacked file in the proper place but when I try to run the Wi-Fi Hotspot feature it says "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped".
I did the current root method for MF3 and SuperSU was installed fine, installed Root Checker and it showed I had root access as well as other programs that required root such as NoBloat and Titanium Backup, all work fine.
Using ES File Manager, I change /system to RW and then go into /system/app and rename TetheringProvision.apk and TetheringProvision.odex with .bak extensions, then copy the hacked TetheringProvision.apk into the /system/app folder. The original files have rw-r--r-- permissions, but the new version has only rw------- permissions. When I try to change the permissions on the new file, ES says "sorry, operation failed". Thinking that maybe this is a problem with ES, I logged into Terminal Emulator, su'd, cd'd into /system/app and tried to chmod 644 the new file and it's denying me even through the terminal emulator.
I'm assuming the reason why the Wi-Fi hotspot feature is failing is because of the permissions not allowing Group and Other to have the Read permission. I never had a problem changing the permissions on my MDL S4, so is there something different in MF3 that is stopping me from chmod'ing the permissions? At this stage, I'm at a loss as to what to try next.
I don't know if this makes any bit of difference, but I did notice that the TetheringProvision.odex on my MDL is 75.75kb while the MF3 version is 76.23kb, both TetheringProvision.apk files on MDL and MF3 are the same size, 203.53kb.
Any suggestions as to what my problem might be or how I can get this working on MF3 like I did on my MDL? I see that others that have rooted their MF3's are able to alter their Wi-Fi hotspot back into action, just not me.
Thanks!

Try this app.. I use it on my rooted MF3 S4 and do not have any issues with it at all. The dev that developed the app is on XDA and also came up with other nice applications.. Thank me if it works..

[Q] Where the hell did the "hosts" file go dk28?

I've been trying to get a custom hosts file to the phone but things aren't working out very well. Root explorer is saying that in /system/etc there's not enough free space to complete the operation. I've also tried with other file managers to no avail. I've tried adb push, shell cp and it says permission denied. I know I'm rooted. I looked in /system/etc and there isn't a stock hosts file, in fact a search says there isn't a hosts file in / and sub directories. I've tried su and sudo and it still gives me the finger. Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm doing everything the same way I've done it with my moment, evo, and epic with 2.1 and now it's not working. I thought that maybe there's a update needed for root explorer like was needed when the epic was first released except other file managers aren't working either. Argh

I would try running the rageagainstthemachine exploit and then immediately try to adb push to system- right after the exploit abd should run as root and you should not get the permission denied (after reboot abd will no longer run as root)
I opened up the run.bat and edited it. I added the push of the hosts file after the rage and root files and chmod it for good measure. Saved the bat then ran it. Permission denied. It's not letting me push the file into /system/etc in one click 2.5.2
damn
stubborn bugger!
Is it possible that an updated exploit is needed? I tried and failed to run ryanza's z4root prog too. Some progs aren't showing up in the market either... I'm sure that's in a post somewhere else too
try doing it manually- that exploit should work- I'm assuming for protected apps to show in market u will have to wait till google officially recognizes this rom

Here's what I found out. The version tar I was using was the odin one. I flashed it on top of di18 with everything erased. For some reason there wasn't a hosts file. I got pissed off and clockworked the di18 I had then entered username and password then nandroided a restore point I had before upgrading. It worked fine as it did before. I ran sprint navigation to get the gps working. Then I dl the update 90 mb file that was hosted on google. I applied that in clockwork on top of everything without erasing everything. Then I had to one click and the pus of hosts failed again because it was a read only filesystem. Things didn't look right and it appeared the one click didn't take the first time. I suspect it was because I let the phone lock and turn off screen. Rebooted phone and one clicked again. This time it took. Looked in /system/etc and there was a hosts file. I don't know if it was stock or one lft over from di18. I tried again to copy modded hosts over on top of existing one with root explorer. It took this time. There must have been something wrong with the odin flash. Noobs clockwork modded update locked up my phone hard at the stock recovery screen. Anyways I'm going to give this a try and see what happens. Browsing in stock and dolphin seem much slower putting the page together and moving around. We will have to wait and see if someone runs a diff between this update and the one that comes with sprint and see what's up.
I need to try and remove flash out of here because the web pages are almost bringng the phone to its knees with flash advertisements.

[Q] Root issues after OTA update (used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper)

So I did the "temp un-root" in Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper before updating to the new OTA build. The update was successful. I then went back to Voodoo and restored root access. It confirmed that I had root. I then went to SuperSU and it seemed to be working fine as well. TiBu also seemed to be working fine.
I then went to ES File Explorer, which I confirmed had been granted root access, and tried to rename the PowerOn.ogg file in order to stop the AT&T bootup sound. The rename did not work, but no error message. Out of curiosity I then tried to cut and paste that file up one directory and it told me it failed due to insufficient privileges. Does this mean something is wrong with my root?
It reminds me of a time on my Galaxy S3 when I did the exact same process with Voodoo and an OTA update...and everything seemed to be working fine...but when I was testing out the then newly released Carbon backup app, it failed to get proper root access every time until I finally just re-rooted the device.
I can't understand why I am having issues, but everything is reporting that I have proper root access. I even downloaded Root Checker and it confirmed my root access.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
The new es is a pain...you have to go to menu then tools then root explorer then mount r/w then check the rw side next to /system in order to write to anything in /system
Have to do it every time you start es

[Q] Rooted Stock MDL - ES File not allowing delete

Just got the phone, updated to MDL. Stock root and TWRP recovery.
SU is installed. Downloaded and checked root with Root Checker - root affirmed.
Only mod so far is Hotspot with the MDL Odexed through TWRP.
Installed ES File Explorer, and it wont allow me to delete or rename system files (specifically ui sounds).
ES asked for and was given SU permission.
I am only good enough with Android as far as I can follow instructions in these forums - I know nothing beyond that.
Any ideas what the problem may be? I was considering getting Root Explorer, if that will work, but I dont want to drop the 3.99 if the problem is elsewhere or can be fixed.
Thanks for your help.
(And what I am currently trying to accomplish is silencing the camera (or more specifically, editing/saving the feature.xml file to allow menu switching of sound : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261789 - it wont let me save the text edited file - I assume it;s the same problem that wont let me delete/rename.)
Thanks. Without you guys I'd be straight Sprint/Samsung stock - aint nobody got time for that.

Thanks, but that was actually the first thing I tried - it brings up the rename dialogue, but then after change and "ok", nothing is changed. Same with Astro and Root File Manager.
Thanks, though.
Anyone else?
Try pressing Menu and then going to "Root Explorer" and then "Mount R/W"
From there, make sure the path shows RW instead of RO. Click ok.
Exit out of ES File Manager and come back in and check the Root Explorer Mount R/W again to see if RW stuck. If it did, try to see if you can delete.

Clicked on root explorer and it gave a (paraphrased) "ES File Explorer has been given superuser privileges for interactive shell" (or something close to that), but I cant find "Mount R/W" anywhere.
And trying various things keeps giving me "device not supported" errors. Again, a paraphrase as the message isnt on screen long enough for me to get the exact wording.
Thanks again for the help.
Is this what comes up when you click on root explorer?

No. Nothing opens up. Same settings menu screen, there is just the message that appears below, then disappears, about "superuser permission granted.
I also have same issue where it tells me superuser access has been granted. However, about 15 seconds later I get another message saying "Sorry, test failed. This feature can not run on your phone."
Hmm, that's definitely not right. Try going to the Application manager, to ES File Explorer, Clear data, Uninstall, then re-installing it through Play Store. See if it still does that.
You should definitely get that screen when you go to root explorer.

That is exactly what is happening with me.
Thanks Apex - doing that now.
UPDATE:
Nope. clear, uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot... and still getting the same results. Bah.
Does Solid Explorer also fail to be able to delete?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pl.solidexplorer
Thanks Apex. Solid Explorer worked. Thank you for not giving up on the ideas.
While I am glad I found a solution to deleting the files, I remain a bit concerned about the ES File Explorer problem. It make me think other problems exist that I just haven't hit yet.
Case closed!
Great, glad that worked out for you.

[Q] Stopping the OTA update??

My girlfriend has an S4 that I rooted and bootloader unlocked when she got it. This is her first Android phone - finally got her off the iPhone!! I want to block the OTA so I can still have my own fun with it. I know I could use an app, e.g., titanium backup or some other app, to freeze the OTA. But she just switched banks and doesn't have a card yet in order to purchase apps through the play store and I havent found an app that will do it for free.
Wondering if I can just rename the apks responsible for pushing the OTA with a root level access file manager without screwing anything up??
Saw somewhere to freezeI, I think: AT&Tupdate, FWupdate, and LocalFOTA.apk's.
Also saw on ScottsROMS site to rename: wssyncmldm.apk
Can I just rename all of these to '.......apk.bak' without any problem? What ones do I actually need to do something to??
Just run a custom ROM. I'm sure they all have the OTA update disabled.
How to Block OTA
Prerequisites
Must be rooted!
Must have a root level file manager. I prefer ES File Explorer
Instuctions
Start root explorer app
Mount /system as read/write
Navigate to /system/app/
Rename wssyncmldm.apk -> wssyncmldm.apk.bak
Reboot

[910H] TitaniumBackup Can't write to SDCARD after upgrading to 5.1.1

Normally this would be fixed by editing platform.xml in /etc/permissions, but if I try to edit that file I get an error that says the entire filesystem is read-only. The app has already been granted root access, so I'm not sure if this is an issue with root, or perhaps there's something else I'm missing.
I followed the instructions in this thread to upgrade to 5.1.1, then I installed WanamLite from this thread.
Any pointers?
Have your re-root your device?
5.1.1 is a bit problematic to ROOT.
5.1.1 Stock ROM uses secure kernel that causing bootloop when you root it.
Use a permissive kernel to successfully root your device.
Edit:
Your first step (Stock ROM) is not rooted.
I suspected there could be an issue with the root, yeah.
I downloaded a root checker and it says it is rooted fine. For every other purpose it seems to work as expected (editing /etc/hosts to prevent ads works fine, for instance), just not for editing platform.xml.
I had a problem like this problem last week when I moved on to 5.1.1. I was getting a pop-up that said this folder is not writable, when trying to set my folder from the sd card.
Try sdfix by nextapp
